Dan & Oskar, your timing hit right on Giving Tuesday...at least here in the US. Hope one new Bin helps! The challenge seems monumental for two guys there on the ground, however one day at a time and they can make a difference...especially with you two spreading the word. I trust your judgement in the telling and for the fundraiser. Couple of questions clarifications about the Police incident, Dan, maybe you'll answer *On Air with Dan and Alex* tomorrow, if not yet recorded. First, were they confirmed City or State Gov Police or glorified Mall Cops exploiting their uniform & power out to make a buck? Dan did you show the copy of your US or your Swedish Passport and why the choice? Were you targeted as two rich white dudes with a camera? They must have some dough. Did you report the incident to the US Consulate? (Don't know how Swedish Gov works.) Reporting to US State Dept, not that they interfere and possibly endanger Sabine and her boyfriend, but so there is a record. As an older Solo traveler, I have relied on the (US) State.gov site and email and SMS alerts for up to date information about where I go and the dangers that are locally known by State. [If you've never looked, check out what is available for a US citizen abroad, your opinion on it's thoroughness from your real world experience would be really helpful! I may be over relying on their knowledge base.] The Consulate and Ambassador needs to know what travelers are experiencing so they can include it it talks, and that only happens if it gets prioritized because people report incidents. Please also talk about what you might do differently in future, and more advice on how to act and react. I assume age and gender make a difference? When should you ask to speak with a Senior Police Official or next step to a Consular Official (without escalating the situation)? So sorry you two had to join that group of Experienced Travelers who've been hit up for a bribe, and so glad it's behind you now, and you are both okay.
Hi @OskarandDan, thanks for the video. Just a quick reminder, the govt actually knows the number of residents of Kibra aka Kibera. In the last national population and household census done in 2019, it was found that the district is home to roughly 110,000 souls (way down from what UN and World Bank had initially estimated to be 1 million). Otherwise, save for your encounter with local law enforcement agents, I hope you had a good time in the country, and look forward to coming back again.
Thank you guys for having the courage and integrity to film such trauma in Nairobi. Glad you lived through it & will no doubt be the talk of the town for years to come. Proud of you both ‼️
Thank you for always being honest and not shying away from sharing difficult situations. I'm sorry you were treated so badly, but I'm glad you were able to leave the situation safely.
What an experience for sure..sorry for all that.. after the past attacks and security concerns we've had in Kenya, most if not all public spaces now have at least these two Police officers with the scary machine guns... even as a local I've been stopped a couple times by the security guards just because of taking photos but never an aggressive encounter like you guys went through... Thanks for the Kibera video; as a Kenyan I have never visited the neighborhood and it's amazing how the locals are helping improve the garbage disposal. We truly appreciate the risk you take to make sure we have a video to watch. Thanks for tagging us along your adventures 🎉❤
Kenyan police are just corrupt, they wanted money. Although a number of Kenyans exhibit homophobia, it is yet to become a significant social issue in Kenya so police won't care about your sexual orientation.
tell me what qualifies as "provocatively gay"? I'd like to know before I risk going - what happened in the video was bad enough to be honest @@seangitari4671
takes 2 minutes to look on google maps and study how big the slum is. then you can calculate yourself an aprox number of people that live there, i assure you that 1 million is a great underappreciation. Think before you act.
Wow Oskar, what an eye opening and scary experience. I had a similar experience in Mexico trying to cross the border in Tijuana and a police officer pulled us over, said we were speeding and then proceeded to bribe us. We ended up paying him $20, but it’s definitely a scary situation. This just shows you it can happen anywhere at any time. Great video as usual. ❤️✈️
Bravo to the youths who clean up the world in many countries, educating people on waste management is important too. We have issue in north Borneo where water villages discard garbage into the sea!
Thank you Oskar and Dan for sharing the good and the bad. It was great to see Kenya through the eyes of a native and through the eyes of visitors!! Always always a great video!! 🫰🫰🫰
The exact same bribe trick happened to me while filming in Cameroon during my last episode. I even had handcuffs on the table while being detained. Thats a shame coz it damages the countrys reputation and its warmhearted people big time. Keep up the great work and the inspirational content guys and never forget to wear 4 layers!😎🥰🙏
My country is a country of “Toa kitu kidogo”meaning a bribe its not only for tourists even us the locals go through that type of harassment.sorry you experienced that.but Kenyan people are welcoming i pray you have more good experiences in your trip.🙏
And to be clear, if they told you about getting lunch, that was the smooth way to bribe before getting into the hut. Give him something small (like 2-5k KSH) and that's it. Or have all your stuff in order, but that includes having your Passport with you at all times, something I'd avoid in Nairobi.
Wow FASCINATING & DRAMATIC vlog. That must have been a traumatic experience but you seem to have handled yourselves with aplomb. One must go through these things from time to time when traveling in order to get the real perspective. I’ve only been to Africa once (Morocco) so I look forward to more Kenya content. (Ps. om den tik sa till mig att hon ville ha en europeisk pojkvän, skulle jag ha sagt till henne att hon inte hade råd med mig.)
Welcome to Kenya again and again.i have been to kibera twice but it freaks me out.but i feel the people living there are nice people but some are just rowdy.sorry for the harassment.the problem with my country it’s corruption.thats what we need help from like seriously.coz if there was no corruption all those people could be evacuated and that place destroyed.it’s saddening for sure.
Funny to show a country in Africa, you must go to the slum but NOT show the development of this country! Thank you for the advice. Africans must go to the ghettos, the slum and show very quickly the development of so-called developed countries. Only bring those slums and ghetto pictures to our fellow citizens!
well how about African do something for themselves... come on Wakanda where are you... stop the preaching mate and show us. Dan and Oskar went with the friends to the so called slum. Don't be an embarrassment to yourself and your people
Great job high lighting these horrid situations, I would be too scared to go to Africa because of this, it's not worth it when there are so many countries that treat people fairly. I am new to your channel and look forward to following your travels.
I’ve been following you guys for so long and I’m so excited you finally came to Kenya. I’m so sorry you had to go through this but our police is something else. I hope you enjoy the better parts of Kenya and visit other beautiful places. I love you guys and I love your content. I’m so happy you came to Kenya though. So happy.
I volunteered as a nurse last year at a small hospital in Arusha, Tanzania. The program director was adamant that each of us go to some random kiosk place in a mall in the center of the small city to get a photocopy of our passport STAMPED with our arrival into Tanzania and to never carry our actual passport on us. This gave me the impression that in some countries, at least, it is perhaps not even sufficient to pull out an older photocopy of the passport. It drove home the point that our passports are truly precious and they can most certainly be used against you in dicey situations.
Having been in Kenya couple times, nothing like that had happened to me. Sounds pretty frightening. You guys are very brave. Personally I prefer to stay in a gated resort when I’m in Nairobi where possibility of someone pointing a machine gun at me is slim. Safe travels. Hope safari was fun!
Terrorism is so bad and unexpected in Kenya that security is usually way higher. I’m sorry y’all experienced that they could have definitely handled y’all situation better.

corruption is the name of the game in most african countries. current govt has contributed to the worst situation right now. so sorry for your experience hope this video get's to the necessary authority because awesome contents like yours is free marketing of a country.
The police can confront you especially on malls because of terror threats on malls since we are neighbouring Somalia.Though it's rare for them to point a gun @ you.Honestly i didn't believe that part.
This is in no way to justify the police behaviour, (we all dislike Kenyan security guards and police conduct) BUT In Kenya's defense as a Kenyan born and breed,we have had a series of terrorist attacks in the past so in an attempt to mitigate more terrorism filming is banned in some areas like malls and airports. Incase y'all don't know about the westage attack in 2013 that was a wake up call for the country.
And if it's true they paid a bribe (and not a legit fine) then they're part of the problem. I wouldn't have paid a cent. The police who worked that mall can be easily identified by providing the time of detention and they'll lose their jobs.

Actually 170,000 people live in kibera it is only exaggerated by NGO s to entice donations which mostly don't reach the locals
