TNice tutorials the best tutorial I've ever watched! Super informatic and love the softow in wNice tutorialch you taught everytNice tutorialng. Thanks a lot
Thanks for a great tutorial. I did practice but if wanted to make a rotation clockwise what should be done as currently it is taking anti clock round. Thanks again.
Thanks for watching! When you're making the keyframe for the rotation Y value, change it to -1 instead of 1 (this part of the tutorial should be around 2:50). Using a positive value for your Y rotation makes it go clockwise. Using a negative value makes it go anti-clockwise. Most of the values in After Effects can go into negative values to go in the opposite direction along any axis :) hope this helps!
Thank you! Yes you can. All you have to do is precompose your layers so that it’s basically grouped and then apply the effect to the new precomp. Hope this helped!
Thanks for this tutorial! Exactly what I needed. How would you start with the text laid out as it would normally appear and then have it wrap into a cylinder? Could this be done on one text layer? Thanks for any help you can send my way! Blessings!!
You could use the stock glow effect or the Deep glow plugin but the way I did it was by duplicating the layer and then adding in a Gaussian blur. I usually keep the layers the same colour unless I’m going for a neon look. In that case I’d make the top layer white and the “glow” layer what ever colour I want the neon to be. With the RGB split, duplicate the layer three times and make each seperate layer red, green, and blue. Offset the red and blue layer position by a few pixels and then play around with the blend modes. Let me know if that helps. If you’d rather see it done I can make a short tomorrow explaining it. Thank you for watching!
You can export it using media encoder and the webM plugin (this is free) or just add it to your render queue using control + M and in the output settings under the channels drop down, select RGB + Alpha. Let me know if this helps!
Love the video . Can this concept be transposed on to a plastic cylinder cardboard via 3d format ? . I'm not very tech savvy . Is it possible . Thanks .
I'm not too sure what you mean. Are you trying to print something onto a plastic cylinder? Print a plastic cylinder? Or project onto a plastic cylinder?
This is a cool effect ,nice work! Do you know if the reverse text can be captured so it functions as it's own independent editable shape layer surface?
Not sure what you mean, sorry. Do you mean the backside of the cylinder? There's a render option in the effect controls that you can change to front, back, or both. Selecting render back will only render the back side of the cylinder. I hope this is what you meant?
@@bgoodstudio possibly, I'm trying to achieve a rotating shape layer / text layer with the capability of independent track mattes on the front and back do you know if this is possible using cc cylinder or do I need duplicate the shape layer for that and create masks each time and keyframe it so the front morphs into the reverse? Like the Apache danger Beach comp
@@chriskilbane7378 ahh thanks for the reference video. Yep, CC cylinder would be one way of doing this effect. You'd have to duplicate the shape/text layer then set one to render back and the other to render front for independent track mattes to work. You've pretty much hit the nail on the head with the process. It's going to be a bit of work though! Taking the Apache video as an example, I think that's at least three cylinder comps for the inner, middle, and outer rings (with the back and front of each ring rendered independently) then precomped and duplicated a bunch of times, stitched together, and masked. Really excited to see the final outcome! Good luck!
@@chriskilbane7378 Just found an article on motiongrapher about this exact video. Search for 'Ned Wenlock: Apache Danger Beach motiongrapher' and scroll to the bottom. He describes his process with a couple of helpful pictures.
@@bgoodstudioYeah man that's the one! it's still fairly complex to work through but I have a 2 week cold 😂 at the moment, I'm so far with it. What do you think? Is he duplicating the shape later to get the reverse track matte and using masks? The text when it rotates at the beginning has a different colour for the front and the reverse. The rotation looks very smooth like he's working with just one shaper though and his drawings indicate one shape with a divide in middle on the reverse layer, Am I missing something?
I posted a reply to Six's comment explaining how to do it if you need to do it now. But if you can wait, I'll be making a video this week or next week on how to do it 🙂
You didn't explain the part where you add the image where the text rotates. because there is a problem, if you add two cylinders and in between the cut object and behind the entire image, the rear part of the front cylinder overlaps, how do you solve it? I'm doing it right now and I don't know how to do it.
I started by separating the background and subject so they're two different layers. I have a rotoscoping tutorial on my channel if you need to learn how. Your layers should look like this: Rotating text Rotoscoped footage Original footage Duplicate the rotating text layer and place it under the rotoscoped footage. In the properties of the duplicate text layer, change the 'Render' from Full to Back. This changes which side of the cylinder gets rendered. On the original text layer (which should be on top of the rotoscoped footage) change the 'Render' to Front. Your layers should look like this: Original Text Layer (Render=Front) Rotoscoped footage Duplicate Text Layer (Render=Back) Original footage Hope this helps! Let me know if you want to see this in a video. I have a few requests to see the text ring in actual applications. Thanks for watching!
