@@JackMackWoodturning yes, I did a finishing course with Martin Saban Smith and his style of finishing is very similar. I saw a demo the other week with a guy who said an even deeper shine can be achieved with three coats of satin lacquer under every coat of normal but I haven't tried that yet

@@JackMackWoodturning Ha ha, well you just never know with some people. I just think if you’re going to varnish something, varnish it all over including the bottom. But then that is just me.
It’s not soft as all it’s maple so it’s very dense indeed. It’s a broad leaf so it’s classified as a hardwood although the terms hard wood and soft wood have no relevance to the actual density of the timber. For example Yew is classed as a soft wood and is fairly dense and balsa wood is classed as a hard wood and is extremely light weight and soft to the touch.
What a cool "simple" piece that truly shows off the stunning grain of the wood. It's perfect for a show piece... But is the spray finish food safe if you wanted to use it for, maybe, fruit? Not that I would really want to put anything in it...😉

The other day I saw you finish with an epoxy resin..there are food safe epoxys..have you considered or used them for items that foods may be placed in ?..like fruit bowls ?... Not really P. All the resin I have is provided for free from companies wanting promotion. I just use what I have at hand. Most of my work is intended as display and not functional now as well. I have had people sending bowls back with mould on them because they had squeezed fruit into them in the past. It isn’t really worth the hassle. 🤣

I am being told in the earpiece that this is not glass but actual wood! Am I being lied to??! Joke aside, that spalted wood looks fantastic and the big flange gives it the look of a giant red blood cell :D
A fine glossy finish - very pleasant! BTW: I think turning a bowl (or any hollow workpiece) needs some amount of spatial sense. Did it ever happen you cut trough the wood because you overestimated it's thickness? Or do you frequently measure it?
That used to happen when I first started bowl turning. That was 20 years ago . I don’t think I’ve done that in about 18 years now. I don’t measure.. I’ve learnt to truest my judgment. I turn over 4000 bowls per year ( in my day job) .. every now and then il cut a few In half on the bandsaw just to double check how everything is.
Very nice bowl. I wanted to learn how to achieve a "Glass Like Finish" like you did. But you didn't tell us. You sprayed something on the bowl then rubbed it with 2 pastes. Wish you had narrated and told us how to get that kind of shine.
Before the Yorkshire Grit, and before the lacquer (at timestamp 9:31) you applied a yellowish product with a white towel. Was the yellowish product beeswax or something similar?

Yes it is a soft wood. The darkness of the grain is a fungus growth in the wood
