So I am the owner in the video. Please note that the camera adds 50lbs haha. I really appreciate everyone's positive comments and well wishes. Some background on Xander, he is a rescue from 4 the love of dogs of New Hampshire, he was apparently very mistreated when he was a puppy in Texas but he is making daily progress and is becoming a great dog, thanks to Thomas and his wonderful staff! For those that commented on Xander being over weight please note that we are BOTH on a diet and now that Thomas has helped me learn how to handle him better he is getting much more exercise. It always amazes me how easy it is for people to be judgmental on these forums!!
Kudos to you for rescuing Xander and giving him a second chance! I have been owned by FOUR Rotties in my life and I can tell you there are a lot of armchair quarterbacks out there that know 'just how to do stuff' and are quick to point fingers at size, equipment, methods, etc. that you use with your dog. They have no idea of backstory, temperament or personality of the dog, but are quick to tell you their views. My advice is to listen to Tom and turn a deaf ear to them. Keep on doing what you are doing and stay positive. HUGE THUMBS UP to you and Xander!!!!!
I’m so glad to hear that and so sad to hear about his past.Congrats to you for taking him and loving him! My friends Rottie was bitten when he had his muzzle on by a pittie and since then he has a problems with dogs especially when he’s muzzled. But that’s his defense mechanism, yesterday we took him to a dogs parks when there weren’t any dogs and when a group of people with their dogs came in the dog park without even questioning us if he’s aggressive or not- we were already on high alert to catch him so we can leave but he didn’t have any problems with those dogs at all, that showed us how much the muzzle makes him more aggressive but it’s still needed (by law and also we don’t wanna risk cus we have many people here that unleash their dogs on street even if they are aggressive) , we are also working with him to make him less dog aggressive. Also heads up that Rotties are also a large breed so sometimes they look over weight when instead they are naturally large chested and have tons of muscle. I had a rottie that was 120 pounds but he just had tons on muscle and had a large chest (he was exercised every day with runs and swimming- in summer just swimming cus it was to hot and we didn’t want to over work him). I recommend if you can take him for swimming helps a lot of calm him down and also lose weight more healthy and build his muscles especially on his lower body! 👍🏻👏🏻
Thank you for being a good & responsible dog guardian by getting professional help instead of giving up on this beautiful animal!!! Keep up the good job of continuing with the training at home!

Heath I am glad you shared your and Xander’s story! I know what people are like on these forums and am happy I read your post 1st. Ignorant people comment without having all the information. Congratulations on your amazing companionI have a rottie mix rescue and their qualities are incredible. Mine is 9 1/2 years and he still surprises me with his humor and intelligence.
Very good session. I really liked seeing dominance and pressure building then you working redirecting giving him time and space for decompression. Timing with pressure and release is such a fine line. Poetry in motion. Kudos to you Tom. Much appreciated.
Its good that you don't completely trust the muzzle. My rottie had a muzzle on at the vet, and in one quick motion he threw it off and went after the vet. Surprised everybody lol.
They don't have to use their teeth to hurt you either. I had taken my human aggressive 45lb border collie to the vet, muzzled AND sedated he still manage to break the vets glasses with how fast he lunged at his face. Yikes!!
Im always amazed when Thomas says sit, the dogs just sit and they aren't even his dogs. My dog doesn't even listen to me sometimes when she's focused on me unless I show her I have a treat .... lol
Did you see him correct the dog for failure to sit early on? This is how the dog learned that he means business. Too many owners never follow through to ensure a dog complies with a known command.
I’m an rvt and I love these videos! Makes me tear up watching dogs change so quickly. We have to deal with aggressive dogs and dog aggressive dogs all the time and hes out here saving dogs from euthanasia and us getting bitten. Greatly appreciate what you do man. It’s incredible
I’m so glad to see Xander improving. We had a rottx right after I got out of college. He showed up at our house one day and we weren’t able to find his people. He thought he was a lapdog. A very large lap dog.
Finally found a trainer I can follow and learn from. Thank you! I have a dominant rescue who is 45lbs, acts like 80lbs and wants to fight at dog park. Following you, I feel like I can correct this action. Appreciate You!!🎉
This man deserves a freaking award he really give us the game unlike these other trainers it really makes you want to travel to him thanks man this really the best koolest channel
I have a Shepherd/ husky mix. We rescued her from Texas 6 years ago.. She is so much better now. We have noticed she is mildly aggressive towards people moving quickly, such as skipping and skate boarders
I appreciate your work a lot. You actually understand dogs. The explanations you give relating to a particular behavior totally makes sense. Even though i myself am a dog trainer located in india. I learn a lot from your videos. Please keep doing what you do. Huge respect & love from india.
Love the fact you train the owners and give them instructive information to use and learn about their dogs. Folks forget that dogs are animals and have feelings and need structure. Thank you for sharing.
Thanks Heath for putting yourself and your dog out there for the benefit of TH-cam viewers. All the best to you both. And ignore the idiots in the comments, amazing how worthless some people are.
Dude your videos are so great, please never forget to make an update video for dogs like these, and when you do make sure the title of the video matches the original video,so that TH-cam automatically recommends the updation video, cause it's not recommending them properly right now. And gotta say this is the only instructional channel which I enjoy watching.
I bought a fake dog to train my reactive dog because I was inspired by this video. Based on my interpretation, my dog is fearful but also dog dominant. He exhibits a lot of the same whining and silent fixation this Rottie exhibits. Grateful for this video!
My dog just attacked a dog this week. I am very relieved I have found your channel!! I like how you had a stuffed dog and watched how he was dominating and what he was doing to the stuffy. 👍
I just adopted a GSD yesterday. Today I got the prong collar you promote,as well as the muzzle you use. He is 6 and big. Amazing animal but I have a problem that I would love advice, so I'll get command right. I live in a RV. He CROWDS me at the door when we're leaving. So far today I have just made him sit while I step down the rv steps. That last 5 secs then he pops up. Never any agression at all but very persistent for the door. I don't want to fall out with him coming right over me. Thanks.
Watch another good trainer, Dave Beckman who teaches dogs to be calm in preparation for a walk-- and while going through doors for a walk. Patience and consistency are needed to change your dog's behavior. .
i have a pit mastiff that is dog agressive. 3 years old and 100 pounds. this video helped me to understand my dog. i am starting to train him like the video. its a work in progress. good luck and well done
I can tell you through experience with owning several Rottweiler that desensitizing prior to reaction as a young dog using rewards to reinforce what they see before lighting up was key. Prior to reaction once he saw a person, dog, stroller, bike in the distance I Marked it and jackpotted reward(food). With my current working dog who is retired and almost 10 it started at 7 months and within a couple of weeks his reaction to the stimuli was greatly reduced. With further work reaction became neutral to all stimuli that previously he lit up on. When the dog gets older like this dog it us much more work to work on reaction to the stimuli. Great job Tom working with that big boy.
Or correct the behaviour you dont want straight away and nip it in the bud. No point creating overstimulation with food when you can just nip it in the bud
Your great the conditioning almost replicates how we humans relate to one another. I work in mental health with individuals that need the same kind of understanding a kind word mixed with boundaries. I realize humans and dogs are vastly different but all creatures react to positive conditioning and structure. You handled human conflict so well youd give me a run for the money. I'm referring to that body builder. You stayed calm and explained yourself in much the same way I do. Im jellous because I have a PHd and you have an intuitive understanding. Thank you
This is exactly why I love watching these videos too! Dogs communicate so beautifully what and how they are feeling. Watching difficult dogs being trained teaches you so much about the human psyche its crazy.
I love these videos, it is so important to see step by step the progress. Training dogs or changing their behavior takes time and a lot of patience, thank you for sharing your work, helps a lot of us to be better pack leaders and loving owners so we can give to our beloved pets the life their deserve.
i just love this trainer and i got a few amasing memories whit this bread of dog . They are not to be underestimate but can be the greatest dog u can have.
Right my first initial thought was, he didn’t use his nose to realize it was a fake dog; that’s not good. But then yeah probably is scent of other dogs on it
Sonda Marshall When dogs are so intensely focused on the visual side of things, they don’t use their noses. He’s at too high an intensity to use his nose, and therefore is getting almost all of his information from sight. It looks like a dog so he’s learned to just attack, and not take the time to smell and gather information.
The most concerning part about this dog is the fact that he’s not using his nose at all. A normal dog would have realized quickly that that decoy was not a real dog by using its nose. Dogs learn early on to function from their noses - that’s not how a normal dog functions.
Pretty sure the faux dogs are heavily scented, also I had a plush life sized gsd when j was a kid and every dog that saw it reacted as if it was a real dog even once they sniffed it xD it's a bit of a mind screw for them
@@trisanone-ya-business7803 agreed his senses were probably already going nuts so sticking something he doesnt recognize infront of him would have been a major trigger
Beautiful dog love Rotties my husband grew up with them. We have a bully mix we got at the shelter and he was absolutely crazy when we got him. A dog trainer similar to Thomas helped save his life when two others told us to put him down. It's been 6 years and he is the best dog I've ever had. Good job hoping its going great!!
I would love to see a video on working with bicycle/moving car reactivity. My dog has very similar reactivity behavior. I have successfully worked with him on his on-leash dog reactivity using similar techniques to those used on this dog, but I have had little to no progress with bicycles. I will say the explanations used in this video were super helpful though and I intend to try and carry them over to the same concept as best I can.
Heath bless you for taking on a rescue, it's not easy your doing a great job baby steps. I have a jack russell who thinks he is a rottie also a rescue the scars are deep but we are getting there
Hi Tom, thanks for your videos, I have watched ton of them and the greatest thing is that this really works! I have a kind of problematic dog and after trying to use some of your exercises it looks like we have a better bond and I have a better control over him. Still lots of work in front of us but we have a progress, thanks!
Just found your channel and I love that you don't use the alpha/physical aggression for training like all of my local trainers. Also my dog heard your commands, jumped on my lap and started watching the video lmfao! wish you peace and patience with the hounds!
I have been watching many videos on how to train reactive dogs and this one made the best sense to me. My dog, an 8 year-old coon hound, reacts to some dogs when she sees during her walk. She can completely ignore some dogs but gets fixated on others. This happens only on the road; not in a dog park or in its parking lot. I wish you were in the SF Bay Area instead of upstate NY. I would like you to work with my dog and me.
Hi Tom, I recently found your channel so I am binge watching in the hopes of helping my pit/husky rescue & myself. I have owned dogs my whole life and he is the most stubborn I have ever seen. I am a proud pittie owner and believe in rescuing dogs as I do not believe animals are disposable or a responsibility to be taken lightly. To be completely honest I have had people that were surprised I still have him. He's 1.5 yrs old and has recently found that he can jump a fence shared with my neighbor. I thought he was using the hedges next to the fence so I had them cut and was working with him with food as reward and he was fine then 💡went off in his head and he was in the planter and over the fence in 5 seconds flat. He then ran through neighbors yard and started chasing a critter in to the desert/wash....next stop would have been the hwy. I wish I lived closer so I could get hands on help from you.
Great video Thomas...I've just rescued an 8 month old cattle dog that was tied under a frangipani tree most of her life. I'm trying real hard at the moment to reduce her anxiety which then seems to move on to aggression towards other dogs. I borrow a neighbours dog ( big silly groodle 🤔) and take her to threshhold then decompress her. She's showing small increments of improvement but still trying to get the basics of heel down pat with her. As she is an Australian cattle dog I feel she has a higher prey drive and seems easily distracted when training just like when the Rotti saw the bike go past. Once she goes over theshhold it's really hard to even remove her from the source of the problem ...she kinda looks like a werewolf with all her heckles up I have a toy dog and this video has inspired me to use it as per your video as another training tool on our journey together keep up the videos. I would like to see how the rotti would be if he met a group of calm dogs in the do park. And Heath....don't take any notice of all the haters out there. Your doing an admiral job saving this beautiful dog ....stuff anyone who talks about your weight..thats all irrelevant BS 🙏
Can someone PLEASE tell me which prong collar was used in this video. I have a rottie who exhibits many similar attributes as this one so I’m trying everything I can. Thanks
Hi Tom, my GSD mix reacts very similar to this Rottie with other dogs, but thankfully he hasn’t bitten any. When I adopted him 1.5 years ago, I was told he was dog friendly, but he is actually extremely dog-dominant and leash reactive to other dogs. I’ve been following your techniques and they work great, if I have the time and space to decompress it always works, but I’m struggling to progress to just walking normally without him loosing it at another dog across the street if I don’t do back/forth heeling every time. I would love it if you had any tips/videos about how to progress from this stage! Thanks for all you do!
Nice work dog trainer dude, I'm currently babysitting a fairly dominant dog myself and by issuing commands and control during tense moments i finds works very well at de-escalation. Thanks bro 👍👍
How do I get you to the UK to help with my GSD! Honestly though, we've learned so much from your videos and Wilson is making massive strides forward in his behaviour on leash, around other dogs and becoming a great family member. He was a stray rescue and anxious as hell around other dogs, pulled and barked like crazy!
This is amazing!!!! Where are you going in Upstate NY? I was born in Syracuse and lived there for 10yrs. Left during the blizzard of 78 to move to Howard AFB in the Panama 🇵🇦 Canal Zone. Leaving during a blizzard then seeing the heat rising off the tarmac was pretty devastating for a 10yr old 😢
I’ve wanted to b a dog trainer for a really long time bc of a personal experience I had with my own dog that I never want people to have to go through again and u inspire me with every video I want to be as good as u one day if there’s any professional trainer willing to give me advice on anything but specifically on getting more confident in myself being able to control dogs that would b greatly appreciated
Oh gosh....you are amazing, where else can I find a dog trainer or owner educator like you in Perth Australia? The trainers I have been to here took 50 mins to talk and only 10 mins to demonstrate and let me practice, some of them made my dog’s reactivity worse, I wish you could be here !
Hi Tom, thank you so much for sharing your knowledge and experience with us. I can't begin to share with you how your videos have helped me develop in a positive way my relationship with my Presa Canario. It's a gradual daily process. May I ask, what is the type of prong collar you suggested in this video. I know that you have often recommended a Herm Sprenger. But, this looked a little different at the bottom. And also, with a 22" neck, what size prong do you suggest? Thank you, Esther
Thomas, good stuff! I hope the lady whose dobi mix I met yesterday sees this video. I recommended your channel to her. Her dog was nuts on & off the leash!
My recently adopted GSD is reactive to other dogs. But mostly it is toward smaller dogs. I have noticed many small dogs are reactive also and start the aggressive barking first. My dog growls as she barks and lunges, which -- the growl -- is concerning. But why is my 70 lb. Dog nervous about such smaller canines?
I could watch your videos all day. Definitely good advice. Rottweilers are such an awesome breed. I hate to see one so out of sync. I definitely have a soft spot but it's a good thing to see you able to help such a big dog and hopefully keep those labels off of big breeds as being dangerous

Congratulations on your amazing companionI have a rottie mix rescue and their qualities are incredible. Mine is 9 1/2 years and he still surprises me with his humor and intelligence.
Thanks for the longer video, I hope we get to see more of this dog.
Thanks for watching!!
You meant the dog whisperer right?
@@DLF-do1gj what's this guy doing wrong? Nice man Borbels are awesome dogs a true Mastiff
I am glad he decided to go to training than putting him down 🥺
I’m so glad to see Xander improving.
So you just gonna disrespect the actuall dog whisperer cesar Milan like that?
can tell a lot about the relationship watching him constantly petting and patting the dog throughout the conversation.
That;s why they are there, no one comes in with everything figured out they wouldn't be there if they knew exactly what to do.
@@tomdavisofficial Yup.
Love the fact you train the owners and give them instructive information to use and learn about their dogs. Folks forget that dogs are animals and have feelings and need structure. Thank you for sharing.
Absolutely amazing! And i'm so happy about the owner's update!
Thanks Heath for putting yourself and your dog out there for the benefit of TH-cam viewers. All the best to you both. And ignore the idiots in the comments, amazing how worthless some people are.
Thanks!
Dude your videos are so great, please never forget to make an update video for dogs like these, and when you do make sure the title of the video matches the original video,so that TH-cam automatically recommends the updation video, cause it's not recommending them properly right now. And gotta say this is the only instructional channel which I enjoy watching.
Thank youu very much
such a cutey. Poor puppy needs lots of training and lots of care. Rotties need a strong master.
Wow! I learned so much from watching this!! This trainer is an absolute master! Wonderful to watch.
Patience and consistency are needed to change your dog's behavior. .
Used herm sprenger for barking in car, worked immediately. Great job Tom!
Best of luck working through these issues. Just seeing dogs willingness to work, I feel positive results are going to come...
Thanks for watching Shelly
i have a pit mastiff that is dog agressive.
Thanks Doug
Or correct the behaviour you dont want straight away and nip it in the bud. No point creating overstimulation with food when you can just nip it in the bud
If that was my dog, i’d probably cry at his progress. Amazing!
“Good decision “ love it
Greetings from the UK
Blessings to you, dear one, for all that you do.
Schön mit Stachelhalsband - das ist ein Ausschlussmerkmal für jeden, der mit Hunden etwas unternimmt. Dazu ein herzliches "würg"
i just love this trainer and i got a few amasing memories whit this bread of dog . They are not to be underestimate but can be the greatest dog u can have.
Im trying to figure out how Zander couldn't figure out the stuffed dog was fake. Does the stuffed dog smell like other dogs?
Sonda Marshall I’m assuming having been used for other dogs and being in that building, other dog’s scents will be on it
Right my first initial thought was, he didn’t use his nose to realize it was a fake dog; that’s not good. But then yeah probably is scent of other dogs on it
Sonda Marshall
When dogs are so intensely focused on the visual side of things, they don’t use their noses. He’s at too high an intensity to use his nose, and therefore is getting almost all of his information from sight. It looks like a dog so he’s learned to just attack, and not take the time to smell and gather information.
Yeah i don’t think he was interested in finding out more ... it was a creature in his space so he thought I get you whatever you are first ...
Love your channel. Thanks for teaching us.
I wish we can hear the dog parent questions.
Thanks
The most concerning part about this dog is the fact that he’s not using his nose at all. A normal dog would have realized quickly that that decoy was not a real dog by using its nose. Dogs learn early on to function from their noses - that’s not how a normal dog functions.
He was abused in the past before the new owner.
Pretty sure the faux dogs are heavily scented, also I had a plush life sized gsd when j was a kid and every dog that saw it reacted as if it was a real dog even once they sniffed it xD it's a bit of a mind screw for them
Not completely true. Especially for this breed.
It's a stuffed animal on the floor of a building full of dogs...that Rot was smelling a lot of things lol
@@trisanone-ya-business7803 agreed his senses were probably already going nuts so sticking something he doesnt recognize infront of him would have been a major trigger
Thanks, A word of appreciation Thomas for the excellent work that you do and the effort put into the video. Greetings from India.
I learned so much about the relationship with dogs, I anderstand much better the issues i've been through. Thanks so much
Didn’t realize there could be a difference in the prong positioning. Will be getting a new one for proper distribution. Thank you!
Wow, i am so impressed!! Well done
How do you keep the dog on one side of you and behind you when walking? My GSD wants to smell everything and walk side to side when I walk him.
Been running Bouviers with bicycle for decades. Exercise a game changer.
i really hope your getting your worth for these sessions bc your really speak dog body language so well
I would love to see a video on working with bicycle/moving car reactivity.
I have a jack russell who thinks he is a rottie also a rescue the scars are deep but we are getting there
Could you apply those same techniques to people as well?
Hi Tom, thanks for your videos, I have watched ton of them and the greatest thing is that this really works! I have a kind of problematic dog and after trying to use some of your exercises it looks like we have a better bond and I have a better control over him. Still lots of work in front of us but we have a progress, thanks!
Soon as I get my next paycheck I’m adopting a dog buying a merch you are the dopest
I love the drunk guy at a bar analogy! Lol. Makes sense.
very good info,..the shelter has several like this all the time. volunteers need these tips as well as owners. thx!
So enjoy watching you work your magic. Great video. Blessings to you.
Hi Tom,
I recently found your channel so I am binge watching in the hopes of helping my pit/husky rescue & myself.
Amazing. Definitely learned a thing or two about decompressing the pup.
Beautiful work as always!! 👍👍
me so thanks so much!
This is exactly like my Pit. Doesn't do well with other dogs and moving bikes. I wish I had the know how to do this for her. Great video to watch
Awesome video:) I have German shepherd with almost the same problems and find your videos very helpful:) Thank you for your work, help and videos:)
Thanks for watching!!
You and the dog are champs. You serve and do great work. You read dogs well. Bless you.
Good work! It’s nice to see someone who knows what there doing. Love the work with the Rottweiler..
so much progression in one video amazing stuff
Training humans to live with their dog is so much harder than training the dog. I hate training humans, but damn I love the dogs.
Can someone PLEASE tell me which prong collar was used in this video. I have a rottie who exhibits many similar attributes as this one so I’m trying everything I can. Thanks
herm sprenger 2.25mm
Hi Tom, my GSD mix reacts very similar to this Rottie with other dogs, but thankfully he hasn’t bitten any. When I adopted him 1.5 years ago, I was told he was dog friendly, but he is actually extremely dog-dominant and leash reactive to other dogs. I’ve been following your techniques and they work great, if I have the time and space to decompress it always works, but I’m struggling to progress to just walking normally without him loosing it at another dog across the street if I don’t do back/forth heeling every time. I would love it if you had any tips/videos about how to progress from this stage! Thanks for all you do!
my GSD is the same, I just adopted her 1 month ago and have to send her to boarding training center for 2 weeks now...
These TH-cam subtitles are hilarious.
This dog has at least three names:
"Zander"
"Cinder"
"Xander".
And I'm not sure if I missed another one. 😂
Would love to see a journey from start to finish on Zander and how he progresses with training. Thanks for sharing videos like this one.
Nice work dog trainer dude, I'm currently babysitting a fairly dominant dog myself and by issuing commands and control during tense moments i finds works very well at de-escalation. Thanks bro 👍👍
I love your training, and love the help you are giving to the owner! He is a beautiful dog and needs the training opportunities!
This was great. My dog is a bit reactive and the video was helpful. I think your training philosophy makes a lot of sense.
Thank you,
Esther
Thanks, Esther, this is a herm sprenger 2.25 with extra clips and a safety clip
Solid work there Tom.
Thanks!!
Thomas, good stuff! I hope the lady whose dobi mix I met yesterday sees this video. I recommended your channel to her. Her dog was nuts on & off the leash!
Great work! Would love to see a follow up!
loogiemistress thank you
My recently adopted GSD is reactive to other dogs.
Thank you very much!
@@tomdavisofficial For sure! 😁
Just FEEDING him a cat once in a WHILE . That will calm him down !!!!! GUARANTEED .
