  • My friend Ben Buck's MPC2000XL has a bunch of broken buttons making it annoying to use. Let's see if we can't fix this up.

    imagine my surprise when I crack the bottom open and see an 8-output staring back at me. this wasn’t in the video!!! (it was a struggle but I got its board and plate off)
    thanks so much for this, I replaced 8 switches with your help. it’s definitely possible to get it done on that board without opening the bottom - when I finally unplugged that part, I didn’t get any more give from the wires than I did before it. I slapped her back together and did the last 3 with that piece plugged back in, so for anyone else this may save you some time!

      for cleaning circuit boards your best best is isopropyl alcohol. Buy the highest alcohol percent you can find.

    please dont take this video down 😂 i need to work on mine in a couple of weeks. ive had my xl since 2009, its absolutely my baby and i am terrified to work on the pcb but it DESPERATELY needs some fixes. i am not experienced at all with soldering and desoldering, you make it look so smooth and precise but you're a pro and i have never done any. should i practice some first? im good with my hands ive actually done some welding before but never worked on anything so tiny and precision based.

      Don't worry, I'm NEVER taking any of these down. This info is for everybody!
      Soldering isn't impossibly difficult, but it will take some practice and unlike making music, the equipment DOES matter. My suggestion is to get a simple kit to practice with. You can find basic kits for making little noisemakers or other toys. They're a good way to learn without risking damaging your equipment. Here's an example from amazon:
      www.amazon.com/Learn-to-Solder-Kit-Jitterbug/dp/B078BYT8K2/
      Also, I've found this video to be an excellent primer on soldering:

      Best of luck! If you have any questions feel free to ask. DM me on instagram @ suma.wav

      @@sumawav ayo thank you so much for the quick and informative reply. you are a treasure fam! think i'll snag that practice kit and put some hours in before i work on my lucille. i subbed and followed you on IG as well.

      You should def practice first, you don’t want to scrape or damage any tracks.
      Grab a old piece of anything on the side of the road or grab some broken things offline for free and just grab any chip board and practice.
      ✌🏽get your hands steady and not so nervous … it might be the case if you’ve never solder something so small and tiny…

      I’m not sure of another place than mpc-stuff that has button caps. You might try ebay.

    Did you have to purchase new switches or did you clean the pre-existing ones and reinstall ?

    • @sumawav
      @sumawav  ปีที่แล้ว

      I bought new switches. They're cheap enough that fixing them isn't worth the effort. Here's the ones I used - I'm *pretty sure* they're the same for all MPC models - at least pre MPC Live:

    Hi nice video man! please , what is this type of wick at 2:48 ?

    • @sumawav
      @sumawav  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Howdy! Thanks for watching
      I just use any copper wick (sometimes called braid) from amazon. Here's an example:

    What are you spraying the board with?

    • @sumawav
      @sumawav  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Isopropyl alcohol. Mainly to clean the board and remove any residual flux. Thanks for watching!

    Does that i replace the cursor buttons or is it soldering issue?

    • @sumawav
      @sumawav  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      If your cursor button isn't working more than likely it's a soldering issue.
