SP303 Repair: Volume Knob and Audio Out

  • I picked up a broken SP303 on ebay months ago. Since I couldn't find a decent tutorial I decided to take a crack at making my own.
    The volume knob was very loose. I could only get audio if I tilted the knob. In addition, one of the output channels was spotty as well.
    Let me know if you have any questions in the comments!

    Watched this while fixing my own and soldering for the first time since high school, thanks for the thorough documentation!

    Few things are as satisfying as watching someone that knows how to solder, soldering. You ever think about doing some diy kit sorta stuff?

      Glad you dig it! I actually started out doing DIY kits. I’m working on a more elaborate KIT now from DIYRE and filming the process!

    badass. are you just using a high % isopropyl alcohol for the cleaning?

    My “ctrl 1” knob got banged during a move and is now completely broken. I’ve ordered a new one. Is there anyway I could speak to you about how to do it properly? The only videos on TH-cam are for the volume knob only. Which is different from the other 3.

    • @sumawav
      @sumawav  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I gotchu fam. The process is identical. The volume knob has 7 pins total - 2 big ones and 5 small ones. The CTRL knob only has 5 pins, the same two big pins, but only 3 little pins.
      This particular 303 had a very broken knob so it came out with little desoldering. My 404og video shows more detail on how to remove solder from a pot to get it out.
      Hit me up on ig if you need more detail 👍🏽

      @@sumawav also just out of curiosity, do you know anything about the mc303? The one I have just suddenly fades out entirely upon playing any sound. I tried changing the battery inside but still the same issue. Any ideas of what could be causing that?

      @@sumawav thank you! I appreciate that and I may well do.
      I opened it up to check if there were any obvious solders missing. It's basically gone from no audio to weak on one channel. So sampling in mono pretty much works. Not sure whether to just replace the RCA thing completely or just try re solder connections.

    • @eliphinobeats
      @eliphinobeats 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      or just sample in mono forever with lower volume output 🥴

    • @sumawav
      @sumawav  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@eliphinobeats in my experience, usually the rca jack itself is in good condition. But the stress from plugging/unplugging rca cables can cause cracks to form in solder points. Over time, traces on the circuitboard can even go bad.
      I would suggest getting the sp303 service manual and taking a look at the schematic. Work backward from the audio outputs and check connections. You can use a multimeter to see if connections are good, OR you can play a sound on the SP while using some metal or wire to test connections.
      I did exactly that on my newest video, i ended up having to wire directly from the rca jacks to the board.

    Hey dude thanks for posting. I'm curious where you got your replacement pots (online or local) I need to replace one pot on my SP-505 and the only replacement pot i can find online is in austrlalia and it's 37 dollars shipping! Was curious if you think the same pots would work for a 303 on a 505. thanks again for posting this video!

    • @sumawav
      @sumawav  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I’ve worked on a 505 before. I’m *pretty* sure it uses the same pots. Many other components are identical. Definitely don’t pay for the australian pots. My suggestion would be to try a 303 pot from ebay. Just keep in mind the volume pot is different from the other ones 👌🏽

    I have an issue with an SP-202, maybe you have an idea: when playing a pad, sound only comes out from the left channel (both for headphones output and RCA outputs, regardless if a sample is mono or stereo). But when passing an external sound source through the unit, I have stereo sound. Makes me think something is wrong with the D/A converter joints? Grateful to hear your suggestions before I start soldering away!

    • @sumawav
      @sumawav  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yo! thanks for watching 🙏🏽
      Very interesting! Especially since both stereo channels work when you're passing an external sound.
      I think you're absolutely correct about something going wrong with the DAC.
      I bet the sound is coming in just fine, as demonstrated by the working EXT in. The problem probably lies with a bad connection AFTER the DAC, so even though you have a solid stereo sample on the unit, only one channel is getting out.
      The sp-202 isn't too difficult to open up. If you take a look at the circuit board, you might be able to see the problem with a naked eye. Look for white, crusty corrosion OR check if solder points have thin cracks on them. Another possibility is blown up capacitors.
      Now if you're really ready to dive in, you can take a look at the SP202 service manual. It has detailed flow charts and schematics. Along with a multimeter, this is probably the best way to find the issue.
      Feel free to DM if you got any more questions!

    I have a question. I just bought an SP 303 and the only sound from the outputs are faint high frequencies (treble only), there is zero sound from the headphone jack and although the volume knob is solid and in its place, there is no change when rotating the knob. In your expertise (and so I have a good idea of what to buy for repairs) do you know of this issue? I don't know if its something common or if there's another route it could be besides the outputs. Any info is appreciated!!

    • @sumawav
      @sumawav  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      If I had to guess, I would say the volume knob has gone bad.
      What I would do is swap the volume knob with a fresh replacement.

    • @ChromeRockwell
      @ChromeRockwell 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@sumawav thank you for the info! Would that contribute to the outputs only putting out the high frequencies? (I.e. faint sound coming from outputs similar to blown speakers)

      Heyo! Thanks for watching
      What you wanna do is turn off your unit, then while holding the CANCEL button turn the unit back on. That should remove the "Prt" status and you should be able to delete samples from bank A and B 👍🏽

    Hey, I’m having an issue with my sp303 and was wondering if you’d have any suggestions. Everything functions normally except the numerical lcd screen does not light up or display anything. I tried buying a replacement screen and soldered it in thinking that the screen itself had just gone faulty but that didn’t resolve the problem. Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

    • @sumawav
      @sumawav  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hmmm, I've never replaced the LCD before. Extra surprising since it's still broken after swapping the part.
      I'm taking a look at the service manual and it looks like all the data for the 7-segment display comes over on a 11-pin ribbon cable. It's the one closest to the bottom of the unit. Ribbon cables can go bad over time - I would use a multimeter and check that the connections are still solid across that ribbon cable.
      If the cable is bent too much it could stress the connections and cause them to crack over time.
      Best of luck and thanks for watching!
