Back in the day, I would set up 3 F-18s to be flying close together over an airport, and I'd be the 4th...we were the Blue Angels...I'd adjust their waypoints so they'd all break at the same time, and it would look like a Blues maneuver at an airshow. It took FOREVER to set it up, but it was worth it.
God. Watching your playthrough of this was such a nostalgia trip. This and ATF were pretty much my pre-teen and teen years. I spent so many hours on these games. I loved creating custom missions in the editor
@@semicolon101 There is a helper app to get this to work on a faster system. It's mostly the same but the joy stick is more herky-jerky. I had one computer this worked on from 30 years ago and the MB died. It was like a AMD Thunderbird 300mhz processor. Sad day.
@@alan93 i have tried a couple of times, when i get the game to play at normal speed the control inputs are delayed by literal seconds, it would also randomly crash. The best bet it seems is to get an actual pentium1 with win 95/98 and play😂 or you know, just watch videos about it online
One of the most amazing things about this game other than an entire list that I can go on and on about.... is the event-changing music.... I loved it! always helped set the mood right along with the RIO when engaging in combat.
I played that game so much years ago. i used to get a kick out of the phrases that would be said during game play. Sometimes for kicks I would shoot my own wingman and he would say, "Hey, I'm a good guy!!!"
I remember fighting some guy online in F-14 AtA duel. I was really good but he kept outmaneuvering me and shooting me down. I asked him how he kept getting behind me so easily. He said he started the mission with 1/3 fuel.
That would be correct. The flight model took into account gross weight of the aircraft (fuel + loadout) and stores drag in its calculations. So if the same type of aircraft would fight both traveling at corner speed (best airspeed for minimal turn rate) the one that was lighter would win. There was an option to disable this behaviour however, the empty weight and no parasitic drag would be considered in calculations IIRC.
congrats on beating this campaign there are some near KIA moments then and there but you made it through only 1 not so expensive aircraft lost i don't care about wingman losses
I never finished the game as a kid. I think I dropped out around the time "The Cattle are horny." I always wondered how the game ended and boy was I disappointed. I was expecting some kind of character resolution for Alex or something more than the briefing officer narrating the ending to me.
I know what 3dfx Voodoo card was (one of first was Diamond Monster 3D it only accelerated 3d graphics in certain games that supported it) - I'm just saying 3dfx was not supported in USNF or any other game in this series, even Fighters Anthology from 1998.
Flat/Gouraud shaded 3d polygon graphics or texture software rendering (like in USNF 97) still looks superior to any "photorealistic" technologies based on GPU's.
When you were accustomed to 320x200, seeing 640x480 was mindblowing. Not to mention 1024x768 which this game also supports albeit without the cockpit art.

Yeah wish i could get all the patches required to play this again, but it seems like a slow clocked Pentium1 with win95 is all that will do the trick

Nostalgic. I remember getting KIA in vietnam campagin by a machine gun shot and bleed to death in the plane.
I remember it being hard as hell shooting things on ground with missiles from F-4s.
More training... basic AOA on approach, weapons management... etc. Imagine doing this mission single ship.

Pentium 100 mhz could run it in 640x480 with 30+ fps
Good job. It'll be nice if you had played some of the missions with su33. The only plane you never touched.

yea that was a tough one. For some reason I always had problems with the YAK-141 too.
Played this game as a kid. It was the gold version. Were the maps infinite? I remember when I got bored I would just fly straight forever lol.
Well they didn't had borders, you could fly out of them but there was no scenery beyond the map edge.

How do you get the F-104 in this game? I know it's flyable but it's never available during the campaign.
To fly it in campaign you would have to enable "Allow flying any plane" cheat from the menu in the Aircraft Selection screen.
If only DCS makes a Ukraine Map Extension to the Caucuses map...I can play like it's 1997.
