My last dog liked to bark at people at the door, strange sounds and the mail carrier…every day! But I found that if I acknowledged him, and told him he was a good protector and thanked him for letting me know, he calmed down immediately. Sometimes, as in when there was a strange sound, I would go to the door and look out, and declare “it’s okay,” and this would satisfy him. I appreciated his barks, because he was just doing his job to protect me! I didn’t feel the need to chastise him for that.

My experiences with yorkies, it’s true they are relatively calm. My aunt’s two previous yorkies barked only at other dogs occasionally at the window, and her current midget of a yorkie only barks loudly when she expectes to walk out
Mine barks at real and imaginary intruders, when someone knocks at the door, when it is feeding time (has a very accurate internal clock), and when she has to go to the bathroom.
Something I see a lot of people forget when it comes to calm small dogs is the toy fox terrier. We've owned a few over the years & they are low maintenance & very laid back.
My pug hiked in the mountains with me a good 30 miles a week. Honest little dog who will make you laugh every day, totally in tune with your feelings and wouldn't hurt a fly; unfortunately, health problems you'll both have to deal with.

Is it? We have a house with a dog that is across the street from us and that dog announces to the entire neighborhood that someone has come to the door. Too much.
What about a miniature schnauzer, they are like your shadow, loves to cuddle, play, going anywhere you want to go. They don’t shed, they don’t smell like some other breeds. Just a thought, if you want a real devoted companion.
Hi. Can I ask you some questions? I'm about to buy a miniature schnauzer puppy and I'm looking for some information. Did you train your dog on your own or took him to training classes? Are his coat and beard easy to care for? How many times a year do you strip his coat? Thank you :)
I have a French bulldog and she is a very calm dog and rarely barks she is more of a watcher but when she does she sounds like a dog 3 times her size She gets a case of the zoomies and then falls asleep. I love her so much
Yorkie are fab watch dogs and will "alert" the bigger neighborhood dogs! Super smart, and need loads of training, eager to please and love their humans
@@funkyfiss As he probably should, Corgis were originally bred as herding dogs. Herding breeds need lots of walking, or a herding job, otherwise they get bored and/or irritable easily.
@@weirdokate8840 Every dog and breed has different needs, in my opinion. What suits a Yorkie won't suit a border collie, what is needed for a working dog is different than for a dog who waits all day for the people to come home, and everyone knows a dog who goes out to "do its business" in bad weather and immediately demands to come right back inside. :)
I have a yorkie that is a senior her previous owner passed away , dog was not house broken, cured most of that She also I remembered was a barker when owner was gone , As they giving her to me and I was walking them out I heard this huge barking I said “excuse me” and I walked back to my apt. Opened my door and said”NO” very loudly I have had her a year now and no problems I can leave she knows I will be back
I believe Miniature Pinschers should be on the list also. They are loving, playful and funny. I had to put mine down last year she would have been 16 this month and miss her very much.
Pomeranian are also wonderful small dogs who are very smart ,and listen to what you ask them to do ,like to go outside or like to eat now ? Or fech ,they do like to please there owner ,,especially good for older people and can be a good watch dog ,there very alert too !
Alert and watchdog are catch words for barking and Poms are known for that. In my town walking along the sidewalk means being barked at suddenly and repeatedly. The dogs also bark from one to another like in 101 Dalmatians. It wears me out to be barked at over and over again. I'm sure the owners aren't home and don't know.
My neighbors had a golden lab that grew up with us kids. Calmest, most docile dog ever. We were allowed to climb on her, sit on her. She never went potty anywhere but her own yard. She was so well behaved that she only wore a leash on walks. Barked once as a puppy and scared herself.
I have a Teacup Yorkie and she's truly the cutest, sweetest dog I have ever owned. Yasmin loves to play fetch with me for such a tiny little girl she's always full of emotions and energy! I love ❤️ her so very much.
Why is the Scottish Terrier always passed up! They are a magnificent breed, highly intelligent and easy to train. I own one and have totally fallen in love with the breed! Great dogs!
@@653j521my Scottish Terrier never barks in the house. He does a high pitched howl when he needs out to go to the bathroom, and when outside playing, he’ll bark if he sees an animal, but he’s so quiet inside you sometimes think you lost him. Lol He also never barks at people.
Havanese are hands down the absolute best-charming,funny, gorgeous, bright, affectionate, and when they DO bark, sound like a mastiff, so great for burglary protection. As calm as they need to be imo.
What about Chinese Crested. I have one, and she is PHENOMENAL! Barks like a watchdog, loves to swim, and cuddle! Very affectionate! Rageddy Ann, says woof!
@Jeanne Lynn True. Papillons are calm, well balanced, courageous, funny and generally very long-lived. Mine was almost 18 years old and healthy as a fish when he perished in a house fire (my house). I was on a training weekend when it happened. My friend took care of the dogs. My sweet Cavalier King Charles girl also died. They were great dogs. Calm, obedient, affectionate and NEVER yappy. I've never fully gotten over the loss. My friend barely escaped asphyxiation. He kept going back into the burning house to rescue my babies.. Until two members of the fire department physically held him down on the lawn. Nine years later, I still don't own another dog. Maybe it is time to let go of the pain though.
You left out the Tibetan Spaniel......I have had several and they are great little dogs. Will bark when the door bell rings but are friendly to everyone they meet. Grooming is easy and they have long life spans. Have had mine for 12 years. Love to settle in with me on the couch. ❤
Have 2 Havanesse female bit barker. Male Laid back. They don't take up much room on couch, small enough to sit up high on back cushions. Fetch, cuddles, repeat. Good pups. Coat, eyes, need attention every couple days. Very smart and watch you constantly.
I had an amazing Shi-tzu,what a personality!! Got a miniature poodle, now that has been a shock to the system!! Loving and clever ,But also very barky and nippy😬
Phalene, the Dog of Riyaks fir 200 years before the Cavaliers were bred into existence...Phalene is the ancestor of the Papillon which is a mix of the Phalene and Chihuahua...Phalene can be found in family portraits from the Renaissance onwards in Italy, France, Germany, Netherlands, Switzerland...
You showed a Yorkie when you started talking about the Lasa Apso. The first two years are anything but calm with a Yorkie. We have had 4 Yorkies and they do get better after two years but calm no.
My Maltipoo is 5 he loves people and is not a barker, his movements with his body are so funny at times! He's an excellent dog to groom, he just sits and lets me do my thing with him! His groomer said Maltipoos are a great mix to have. His name is Oxy and he weighs 7lbs. I love him dearly! He's a joy and so darn cute! When I ask him for a kiss he licks my right eye every time! So sweet! I am Judy from Wilton, Maine
Did I miss the luttle Coton de Tulear? I feel they shoyld be included. They are smart, fun, clowns, very loving and joyful. Loving people, gentle with children, very often like cats and love playing with other dogs. Cautious wurh large digs until they get to know them. They like learning new tricks, new words, playing wirh toys Love new adventures outdoors ,taking hikes in woods and beach. Not a lap dog but like to be near and keep an eye out on their owners always... If owner stretches out for a nap they will nap too . Cotobs like to please and love earning oraise for a job well done. Very loving, smart, patient. A precious little dog.
I've got a 15 yr old Cotie and he rarely barks unless he needs to. Plus he's a stitch - still really playful! My Maltipoo however... his bark will make your ears ring. Barking is his passion followed by howling.
Whether the dog is yappy really depends mostly on their training and individual personality. For Yorkshire terries, I've seen plenty of yappy ones. But at the same time, I grep up with one that had no tendency of barking. The problem with small dogs is the fact that many people treat them like babies (not even children, as you shouldn't allow a child to do whatever they want).
agreed, i see people lean over smaller dogs often because "they're just so cute and tiny", like yes, they are, but they are still dogs, they can feel threatened by that so they start barking
@@weirdokate8840 I frankly don't care if a dog feels threatened. They need to learn their place in a home and it's not the top position. People treating dogs as surrogate children are the worst
Small dogs are too yappy!! Lol. They always were and always will be!! That's just how they are. We have a dog with a big dog bark. I love it!! He scares all of the strangers away from our home. He's a great watchdog!! He's half Australian Cattle dog and shepherd mix. He's the smartest dog we have ever had. Love him!! 💖💖💖
Many Yorkies are little yap meisters!! Early training & socialization is needed to control this. I have had two of the wee buggers - adorable, incredibly brave & smart enough for this lady!!
"Hence, they wont hurt anyone, not even a fly" Me: has flashes of that time I had a corgi hanging from the side of my knee for two steps before he let go. Yeah, the scar on my leg tells a different tale than that quote... I was walking holding only him because he had even started to act out against the other dogs he was being walked simultaneously with suddenly. I don't know why that dog went crazy, but he steadily got worse at that daycare, and when he eventually had bit enough ppl to need a transfer he was apparently "fine" and hasn't hurt a fly. My guess is because we walked one dog at a time unlike many daycares, now that he is walked with (I assume), more dogs at the same time he knows he is as good as dead if he acts up and bites one of the dogs or a person. I don't hate corgis despite what I went through with that dog, but they are clearly still working dogs that need the output and job of one. There are a few more decades of goal oriented breeding needed before any meaningful shift into just pet will be made, I predict.
Miniature and toy poodles are two different breeds. My mini poodle loves being in the middle of the bed and takes up half my bed 😂 On the couch or in the car she prefers my lap.
I rescue poodles and I have 2 of my own, also have a cavalier King Charles and this person says they are not barkers, yes they are , my poodles only bark if someone is at my door🌸🌺🐩🐾🐩🐾🐩
Adopt, adopt adopt, do not buy. Millions of street dogs are needlessly put to death each year. Pure breeds like the poor pugs were bred so carelessly, and as a result have terrible breathing problems as they age. Ado not be fooled. There are wonderful Heinz 47 doggies waiting to give you lots of love, at your local pound.
I recently went looking to adopt a dog, but the only ones I could find within a reasonable drive were either big dogs who could step over my fence without really trying, or extremely high energy working dogs (so many Kelpies and similar up for rescue in Australia - very sad), or dogs with issues that needed someone at home all the time, or to be the only dog in the house. I ended up getting a mutt puppy from a lady a couple of hours from me. He gets on fabulously with my Australian Terrier. Unfortunately, rescuing a dog is not always an option.
Thank you, I need to replace my one and only indoor dog ever of 12 yrs. a small blue Merle English cocker spaniel, very best well mannered and well trained dog EVER. I have a rescue Frenchie and a Chihuahua and boy, I do love my Frenchie. However, whilst I'd have 10 more chi's (my girl is sweet and calm), I wouldn't have another Frenchie. Love him to bits but he's full of energy, demands attention and talks and talks. I sometimes think there is a 'calm' perception about Frenchies but any I have met have been bonkers! They're not for the feint hearted and need a lot of attention and someone with energy! Lovely, but bonkers 🤣🤣
I have three chihuahuas. They bark, yes sometimes and for a short time. Further they are real couch potatoes. And very loveable. And cute! They are not do for young children and other dogs. Buy they relax me, and that is important, not?

uh uh, Yorkie Terriers bark up a storm. They definitely fit into that yappy "stereotype".
I love the Cavalier. Such a sweet dog.
Where is the Pomeranian? My Pom rarely barked and had a wonderfully calm personality. Super intelligent and friendly toward strangers.
The pomeranian they are good with kids like mine and he also likes to snuggle up to me and have cuddles
Yorkie are fab watch dogs and will "alert" the bigger neighborhood dogs! Super smart, and need loads of training, eager to please and love their humans
I fostered 2 different yorkies. One barked everytime someone came in the door, the other barely lifts his head to see who's coming in the house.
"Walking a Corgi from time to time" will make for a depressed, irritable dog. They need a minimum of an hour's walk a day and would love more.
every dog really, should get a solid 2 walks every day in my opinion. i go once after breakfast and after dinner for about half an hour or more each
My brother in law has a corgi, he has to walk it about 6 times a day.
@@funkyfiss
As he probably should, Corgis were originally bred as herding dogs. Herding breeds need lots of walking, or a herding job, otherwise they get bored and/or irritable easily.
@@howardkerr8174 This one does. Needs to be constantly be entertained and barks allot. You wouldn't think such a big bark come from a little dog.
I can’t believe that corgis are on this list. Incessant barking is one of their characteristics!
I have a yorkie that is a senior her previous owner passed away , dog was not house broken, cured most of that She also I remembered was a barker when owner was gone , As they giving her to me and I was walking them out I heard this huge barking I said “excuse me” and I walked back to my apt. Opened my door and said”NO” very loudly I have had her a year now and no problems I can leave she knows I will be back
to be COMPLETELY honest i'm PERMANENTLY a small dog fanatic
Where are the Shih-Tzu's?? We have 2 that have the best dispositions
So glad to see Lhasa apso- best of all.
I believe Miniature Pinschers should be on the list also. They are loving, playful and funny. I had to put mine down last year she would have been 16 this month and miss her very much.
Sorry for your loss charline
I love Bichons
I had a lasa Apso, wonderful dog.Best with children.
Great dogs!
A calm, quiet terrier?
@@653j521my Scottish Terrier never barks in the house. He does a high pitched howl when he needs out to go to the bathroom, and when outside playing, he’ll bark if he sees an animal, but he’s so quiet inside you sometimes think you lost him. Lol He also never barks at people.
You have video of a Yorkie in the Lhasa Apso section. Everything else is great.
I was very happy to see the Havanese in this group.
Havanese are hands down the absolute best-charming,funny, gorgeous, bright, affectionate, and when they DO bark, sound like a mastiff, so great for burglary protection. As calm as they need to be imo.
Westies and Scotties are not hyper, but Westies are "enthusiastic" barkers.🤣
Jack russel terrier
What about Chinese Crested. I have one, and she is PHENOMENAL! Barks like a watchdog, loves to swim, and cuddle! Very affectionate! Rageddy Ann, says woof!
The Papillon is a calm small dog.
@Jeanne Lynn
True.
Oh no esy I'll have to look more into this breed :) thanks
Have 2 Havanesse female bit barker. Male Laid back. They don't take up much room on couch, small enough to sit up high on back cushions. Fetch, cuddles, repeat. Good pups. Coat, eyes, need attention every couple days. Very smart and watch you constantly.
I had an amazing Shi-tzu,what a personality!! Got a miniature poodle, now that has been a shock to the system!! Loving and clever
,But also very barky and nippy😬
Bishoon fries are awsome need to check with hospice if they'll allow a therapy dog of one.
Have a long haired dashhound love him he is so preious harley barks he is clam and mines
Maltipoo ❤️
Loved that breed!Ours just passed 4wks ago, still grieving.
WOW DID I MISS THE CHIHUAHUA? THEY ARE THE BEST AND SMALLEDT OF ALL OF THESE PUPS.
I believe Shih Tzus should be added to this list. Mine is by far the gentlist, quietist, smartist dog & a wonderful family pet.
I love the miniature poodles but I have had no luck finding one here. Need a forever companion. 😍 love this, thank you!
Never heard of them.
@@fluffythehamster3258
You might want to google them. Excellent little pooches.
My lab only barked when surprised by the doorbell. But labs aren’t small so not on the list.
So cute! ❤!
Chinese crested terriers, calm, loving, small breed. Hairy and hairless born in same litter. Healthy and love to take walk.
Love him!! 💖💖💖
My shih tzu would refuse to bark :) he was super quiet. 💛
Many Yorkies are little yap meisters!! Early training & socialization is needed to control this. I have had two of the wee buggers - adorable, incredibly brave & smart enough for this lady!!
We have a Maltese yorkie (morkie) and he’s the best dog ever
My tiny chihuahua is very cuddly with zero annoying barking. How he did not make the list is a mystery. Maybe we got lucky with a nice one.
Makes me realize I'd rather have a cat. Thanks!
Siamese can be very talkative, too.
There are a few more decades of goal oriented breeding needed before any meaningful shift into just pet will be made, I predict.
hubbie and I love a noisy dog who barks a lot to alert us if anything is going on thus we love yorkies.
I know of two that are so yappy..They know your a stranger in there home and they will not stop barking..
My friend has a horrid little Yorkie that yaps and barks constantly.
I love all.
Miniature and toy poodles are two different breeds.
My mini poodle loves being in the middle of the bed and takes up half my bed 😂
On the couch or in the car she prefers my lap.
I rescue poodles and I have 2 of my own, also have a cavalier King Charles and this person says they are not barkers, yes they are , my poodles only bark if someone is at my door🌸🌺🐩🐾🐩🐾🐩
i have a minature dachshund sleeps 22hrs a day
Adopt, adopt adopt, do not buy.
So, lil lover who wants to fallow me and stay close to me, like “Gus” did. This is an awesome website, I’m grateful for your knowledge and generosity.
Hairless Chinese Crested they are extremely smart and very easy to train. Not barkers and hypoallergenic. They are bond to their owners and give unconditional love.
My Yorkie is a barker…help
Shih tzu is my sweet calm companion fifteen years old ❤
I have a rescue Frenchie and a Chihuahua and boy, I do love my Frenchie.
This is crazy. There is nothing calm about Boston terriers or Yorkshire Terriers. Terrier is the key word to a dog that’s not calm!
🇫🇷☕️💕I love shitzu and Lhasa apso
I have three chihuahuas. They bark, yes sometimes and for a short time. Further they are real couch potatoes. And very loveable. And cute! They are not do for young children and other dogs. Buy they relax me, and that is important, not?
