    I was working as an office manager at a veterinary clinic through most of these recalls. The company offered employees free food in exchange for being able to say "XX clinic staff feeds their pets our product". Not a single person took the offer. NONE of us were willing to chance our pets' health or our professional reputations. There's plenty of good food options out with much better track records so Blue will never be something my boy will be finding in his bowl.

      What's a good food? Our cat will only eat Blue buffalo and I think it's making her fat and sick.

      @@beckyberlin1190 On their website! They've got a list of their best rated foods on their website - I believe the link is in the description (they also have the summary video in this channel). And they also have lots of reviews on plenty of other brands.. rated very well imo, they take into account recall history, how appropriate it's for cats, quality, etc. They also have like top 10s on a lot of cat related food and products, it's pretty cool for us kitten enthusiasts. Highly recommend.

      @@beckyberlin1190 I know this is late but unless your cat has an allergy to grain please don't feed them grain free. Grain free was invented as a marketing spin from pet food companies but a lot of research has gone in to grain free food and it is linked to heart disease in both cats and dogs

      After both of cats got really sick after eating BlueLine, we did our own research rather than relying on Amazon "reviews". After trying out 8-9 different brands, we settled on Solid Gold, truly a "natural" ingredeint product, both cats just got a thumbs up from our vet after being on it for 3-1/5 months. All issues gone.

    Nicest way anyone could say “This food is shit.” Lol

    • @theresa94010
      @theresa94010 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      It certainly is bad. I bought into the hype of its "natural" ingredients but my two cats knew better. They both threw up within 3-4 minutes and never would go near ever again. One would not stop vomiting we took him to the vet late at night and our vet asked what he ate (Blue Buffalo Wilderness Turkey) and said "do not feed that junk to your cats again". The remaining 20+ cans went into garbage that night.

  • @elaGuillen

    I read this yesterday :
    Most of the carrageenan hysteria stems from animal studies that implicate carrageenan in the formation of ulcerations and cancerous lesions in the colon. A thorough review of the approximately 45 available animal studies on carrageenan was published in 2001, and at first glance, these studies seem alarming. However, it turns out that the majority of these animal experiments used poligeenan instead of carrageenan, and as I mentioned before, these are two separate compounds with different effects. Poligeenan is significantly more detrimental to the health of lab animals than carrageenan, so the lack of a clear designation between them has given carrageenan a worse reputation than it deserves.
    One important difference is that while poligeenan can cause cancer on its own when given in high enough concentrations, undegraded carrageenan has only ever been shown to accelerate cancer formation when administered with a known carcinogen. (3) In other words, food-grade carrageenan has not been shown to cause cancer in animal models. That doesn’t necessarily mean carrageenan is in the clear when it comes to cancer, but contrary to popular belief, it is not a known carcinogen.
    Additionally, poligeenan produces more severe ulceration and inflammation than carrageenan, and at lower concentrations. As an example, a study on rhesus monkeys using poligeenan at 0.5-2% resulted in diarrhea, hemorrhage, and ulcerations, while carrageenan at 1-3% resulted in no colonic changes. (4) (For reference, the concentration of carrageenan in processed food is usually between 0.01% and 1%.) (5)

    I appreciate this specific brand review. I’ve been feeding my 20+ pound cat the indoor weight loss formula and he has lost a healthy amount of weight and loves the food. I recently adopted another chunky girl and I feed her the blue buffalo indoor health. She has become so grossly underweight and I’ve been wondering if it’s due to feeding her this brand because people always judge me when I tell them what I feed my boy. I was just thinking of doing more research and finding better food for both of their needs and this video is a sign from the universe that I should ❤️

    In 2018 Blue Buffalo Ltd was acquired by General Mills. At the time of this video release, the Healthy Gourmet line of canned cat food was being phased out. It was replaced with the new Tastefuls line, though there are now only 9 flavors to choose from. The Gourmet line had about 12 flavors, I believe.

  • @anntomao1052

    Been feeding my cat the BLUE "Tastefuls" chicken varieties for awhile now. About 6 months ago he developed a pretty bad wet cough. The vet prescribed prednisone and basically after tests was leading me to believe this was a cat asthma situation. My cat was getting no better on the meds, so decided to change food on the off chance this was the trigger. Lo and behold my cat stopped coughing! Its been a few days and he lets out one cough occasionally now where before there would be several hacking events daily. Now to figure out what to feed him -the search is on! I personally would not recommend this brand.

    I've been feeding my Adult cat the Blue Wilderness brand, as she loves it. When I first adopted her she was really overweight, and not very active, she couldn't even climb her cat tree because she had no muscle, I had to give her a boost to each platform. After I put her on the Wilderness diet, she became so active, climbs her tree like a pro, and I can actually see her muscles now when she walks. Also her POOP does not stink on this diet. This review is disappointing because I felt I was feeding her healthy food.

    I feed my kitten the Blue buffalo healthy growth dry chicken and brown rice recipe and also blue wilderness wet food to make up for the meat he isnt getting from the dry healthy growth recipe. The reason I don't feed him wilderness as dry food is because the healthy growth recipe is more affordable for me but I am still feeding him what I believe to be a balanced diet. Also there are no artificial additions which is important to me.

    Good review. Their recall history should get your attention. The only reason it's popular is for the reason you pointed out, the founder is a marketing expert and most people don't educate themselves about what they are feeding their animal, they just like the cute commercials and pretty packaging! Ok I had no idea, I knew of the recall in 2017. Oh wow this is an eye opener. I feed my kitties the wilderness chicken or salmon small amount of kibble. I do always feed wet food I do nulo, fancy feast and I am trying Tiki cat fingers cross they like it. I used to feed my kitties nulo dry but it had chickpeas in it and I thought it was not good for kitties. Any good dry you would recommend just to give a little a long with the wet food?

    I could use some input here. I have to cats, and feed them the Blue Wilderness currently. They seem pretty healthy, and as long as I keep it relatively close to the "recommended amount" they seem to have good health. I had considered BW to be a compromise between feeding my cat the very expensive foods, and Iams/ Purina (which I am skeptical of).
    Is there a grocery store happy medium that I could buy that would be better?

    I'm glad I found this video of yours reviewing this food cuz I have been feeding this to my cat only because it was suggested since he has issues with constipation and they said it's got good fiber in it but he's 13 years old and I've been trying to find him a good canned food that will be good fiber sources well so if you have any suggestions on a good canned food that would be great.

My bed is mentioned she's not real crazy about these grain-free because since grain-free has been founded in dogs mostly about causing heart issues and she says there's been a few cats as well in the past and I actually have to that have heart murmurs. I believe they're trying to say that maybe what causes it is maybe the green feet free is lacking maybe taurine or something I don't know.. what's your thoughts on that

    • @AllAboutCatsYT
      @AllAboutCatsYT  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TheMultikitty8 The grain-free thing doesn't really apply to wet food. Wet food has always been grain-free, in most cases, and there's nothing about it that would cause problems for cats. Dry grain-free food, on the other hand, tends to contain legumes and other ingredients that may cause these problems (some speculate that the legumes inhibit nutrient absorption). I think your vet is making a blanket statement without considering the nuance between wet and dry cat food. Hope this clarifies.

    I have heard that vets do not recommend this cat food and causes problems for cats. It just so happens I have spent a good deal of time reading cat food labels and being disappointed. I have recently started introducing my cats to a high protein dry cat food in addition to their wet food, however the vet told me that high protein can cause urinary tract problems, therefore I cannot keep it as a total dry choice. Finding this out I'm trying to find something that is non gmo and doesn't contain artificial color and fillers. Unfortunately it is near impossible. I have to choose one or the other.

    Although 99% blue buffalo products are junk, I do find the wilderness high protein chicken wet cat food and Carnivora wet food for the kitten(it labeled for the kitten but you can feed adult without any problem) are top quality in terms of ingredient and nutrition facts. The former one contains only 3% carbohydrates which is 20% of its dry matter and the latter one contains almost 0% carbohydrates. Most cat wet food on the market contains 35% carbohydrates of the dry matter including most premium brands like Orijen/Ziwi. Besides all crude protein in these two products are animal sources not like Merrick which has added pea protein. My only concern about these two products is the blue buffalo's bad reputation. Other great choices are Nulo wet food in 12.5oz can which only has 10% carbohydrates of the dry matter and tiki after dark pate(10% as well). To feed your cat, I recommend buy one can of each of these products and choose the one that your cat has no bad reaction. Sometimes your cats are sick for a product may just because of allergies. It's neither fault of the product nor of the cat. If you have a tight budget, buy 4 packs of blue buffalo wilderness high protein chicken 12.5oz *12 at PetCo now. Petco is offering 50% off for the first repeated delivery subscription of blue buffalo wilderness products. Besides, the dry cat foods I would recommend, based on my research, are instincts ultimate protein and go! solution grain-free chicken duck turkey.

    I have 20 cats to feed daily. They came into my life I didn’t ask for them and now I’m a cat person and I’m learning a lot. I haven’t had a cat since 1993 when I had to put him down for the cat aids virus and he also had a drooling problem and towards the end he couldn’t pee anymore. The urinary problem worries me. I heard we need to feed them wet food so I give them that daily. I’m buying the fancy feast kind now. I started with friskies cans but they leave a lot of meat behind. They prefer watered gravy wet food with very little meat. I can’t find anything that offers that. Pate they don’t care for either so I have to buy pate and those lil gravies packets and mix it to make a paste. It seems to work but they still just lick up the gravy and leave the grinned meat behind. The broths they sell are $1.22 for a little packet. I go to Walmart only. I just buy what they got. My cats love the lil soups from friskies too. I buy those in gross when available. They gotta make them so small though. These companies don’t take into consideration some people got more than one cat. And before you ask I got them all fixed. Two more to go but I might have to pay full price for them because one of their sisters died before surgery and they didn’t do it for the other two and I don’t plan on going back to that low cost place for these cats. I hate to lose these two. It’s ridiculous how much they charge to get your cat fixed at a regular veterinarian clinic. If you have lots of cats like I do get them fixed ASAP and try to get them vaccinated as well. They control my life now lol. But I love them all. I was gonna try Blue buffalo because Walmart has it but I don’t think they will like it any better. I don’t know if fancy feast is good or not but I can’t be choosy. That’s the best I can do on my budget. You all do realize what alley stray cats eat right? Lol they eat crud and drink dirty water on the street etc. I seen some live years and years like that. My cats should be happy for fancy feast and cat chow dry food. I’m sure fancy feast is better than what stray cats eat daily. Think about it that way

    Since you mentioned pet recalls, it would be helpful to explain the difference between that and “under investigation or observation” such as Fromm.
    I thought Fromm was high quality, but they are saying their food can increase risk of heart disease. How true is this? I am going by memory here. I am not sure where I found it.
    They also had one pet food recall in 2016 for dogs due to high vitamin D levels.
    Fromm is a family owned company (been around for decades). It would be good to do a pet review on them because they have ranked high on some sites (4 out of 5 stars) and that is why I stuck with it. My cat Vita has not had any allergic reactions either, but she has seemed to react to another dry food I bought from a different company.

    • @AllAboutCatsYT
      @AllAboutCatsYT  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hello there! You make a good point-the definition of a recall (and the difference between voluntary and non-voluntary recalls) is not clear or necessarily intuitive. As you know, Fromm is currently under investigation. This is due to recent observations about a potential correlation between grain-free food and increased risk of DCM (dilated cardiomyopathy), particularly in dogs. According to the FDA investigation, it seemed that dogs who ate certain grain-free foods were more likely to develop this condition compared to those who didn't. There were also a few cats in these findings. Again, this is not an issue that's specific to Fromm. Instead, Fromm is among 16 different brands that are currently under investigation (and have been for about 3 years). It's an ongoing investigation and there are multiple theories about why dogs are experiencing these issues, but I see no reason to believe that Fromm food, in particular, is more of a risk to cats than any other brand.

    • @AllAboutCatsYT
      @AllAboutCatsYT  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Glad you found it interesting! We calculated the percentages by looking at the guaranteed analyses and converting the values there to a dry matter basis. It's an imperfect system relying on minimums and maximums rather than exact nutrient values. For more precise nutrient values, I would ask the company for a "typical analysis", which provides the average protein, fat, and carbohydrate content of the food. Hope this helps!
