BRIDAL MUA 🙋🏻♀️ here. Color correction, tinted powders, and primers are great examples of products for the ‘extreme cases’ most people’s normal skin prep is more than enough. If you fall into the extreme zones of oily or dry you can actually experience the true benefits of primers. Correctors are the same when you feel you tried everything and something just won’t cover it might be time to look into it! …Yes!! The gloss hack saved me soooo much room in my kit. Pick your fav formula of clear gloss and simply mix with a lipstick on the back of your hand Or palette you can play with the ratios to adjust the opacity as well. Then whatever you find yourself mixing up a lot maybe look into treating yourself to one for your handbag. But you can also just put a clear gloss over any lip too! Your routine doesn’t have to be the million steps you see online I said that to so many people when I used to help clients in store.

Loving this type of content. My unnecessary has become using cream and powder bronzer/blush to set the cream one. I totally don't need to use BOTH. Either powder or cream alone works just fine... I'm trying to maximize my products so I can use less items while still getting the look I wanted. ❤
@@ellerchu Plus, so many of us have bought too much makeup, if I use less of it, it's probably just going to expire. Although, I don't worry too much about powders now, Robert Welsh watched a vid with old eyeshadows (about ten years old I think) tested for bacteria and they all had none. The exception is they can still hard pan like one of my Tarte blushes and nearly all of my Colourpop single shadows. I was able to save the blush, but had to break it up and use not only Inglot, but alcohol to reset it in the pan. I got my Colourpop ones to work eventually, but they dry up in between uses now.
Not a product/step I skip during my makeup routine by any means because it’s a crucial step for me😭, but I don’t find high-end setting sprays worth it! I cannot justify paying $40 for a setting spray (a product you go through so quickly) when my Milani or Elf setting spray can do the same job (if not better😗) for a fraction of the price and the bottle lasts JUST AS LONG.

Hot tip if you mess up in picking a slightly too dark loose powder: I have a powder that turned out to be too dark to use for setting under eyes when I’m wearing foundation (admittedly the foundation is a shade too light but that’s to account for oxidation), but seems right on bare skin. Since I can’t be super bothered to apply foundation/skin tints for every day, I use the powder instead just to get a bit more of put together look when I am using minimal make up (i.e. use it as a super light powder foundation that I can just swipe on with a huge fluffy brush) This is mostly until I can empty it out but we’ll see if it ends up being a staple haha

I also have rosacea I’m been using the dr jart tiger grass corrector & this first time I used it I gasped because it was the first time my redness was covered
I noticed that for me eye and lip pencils are essentially useless. I usually go for a quick "natural" look, and lip pencils just don't go with the aesthetic as they make the lips look too fancy for such a simple makeup style. As for eye pencils, I find that it's easier to use pigmented eyeshadows as they are easier to fix when I eventually mess up😅 Plus, I noticed that I don't need powder bronzer and blushes, as I can just set my cream ones with a thin layer of clear powder.
So I’m very new to wearing makeup and through trial and error, the products I’m not buying anymore are Tinted Sunscreens and Moisturizers, Skin Tints, Liquid foundations, and bronzing/glow drops/serums. All of these products just don’t sit well on my skin and only accentuate my pores and skin texture, even when wearing pore blurring primers (another product I find just doesn’t work for me). I prefer powder foundations and stick cream foundations. And I haven’t experimented with eye shadow, but I don’t feel a need to because I find that using my bronzer and blush works great as a natural looking eye shadow.

I have to remind myself to use it because I have too many (whoops). I have normal skin with an oily t-zone, so regular foundation+powder and a good setting spray work just fine for me. I also find myself wanting to buy/try new things just for the sake of buying something, which is obviously not good. I really love your tips, I also tend to find more satisfaction in the thought of "What can I get rid of" than "What can I buy". The only tips that won't work for me are the ones that rely on full coverage foundation. I know that Americans use those a lot everyday, but Europeans just don't. Someone would definitely stand out with "that much make-up" if there is no event happening.
Most people around me don’t wear as much makeup either. 😅 I explained full coverage as something you could make sheer or use as spot concealer to get the same ”no makeup” look. But of course it all depends on what you prefer!
Love the point of multi-use items - it saves so much time and makes traveling much easier. 😅 I've recently been simplifying my "regular" makeup as I run out of previous items, and one thing I've loved for that is the NYX Wonderstick. I swatched a bunch at Ulta and found my favorite "highlight" shade (since I don't contour as often), so I can use it for simple eyeshadow and not need a full palette daily. The "contour" on the outside and the highlight on the inside of the eye for a little gradient with sparkle... I also have a cream stick blush that I can also use for lip color.
I totally agree with the primer, I stopped using primer and looked more into skincare. The highlighter and eyeshadow looks the same! Thank you for this I'll definitely try this out! :)
I totally agree a hydrating primer is not worth it all you need is a good moisturizer or serum. I feel like you don’t need coloured eyeliner. I also feel you don’t need loose setting powder on a regular basis or pink or purple powder. I also agree you don’t need a highlighter
My first “concealer” was a bottle of product from L’Oréal that I think was supposed to be a foundation it was a really good shade for me and it was actually pretty good
I love how you said that just because something is advertised a certain way, it doesn't mean that you have to use it that way. I recently realized that I prefer using my foundation to spot conceal now that I moved to Texas, but I also like using primer to make my blush and bronzer last. I use the Luminous Silk because I like it, rather than to serve a specific function. I also use only cream products now because I hate the way powders look on me. Still an eyeshadow maximalist though.
Hello Elle! Also you have a soothing voice and it’s nice to hear you! Greetings from Mexico 🇲🇽 and thanks for all the info you provide us with!
Hi there! I love the aspect of “questioning” that you shared. It means so much to me that you enjoy my content. Thank you for taking the time to comment and watch my videos. Much love 🥹🫶
Not exactly makeup, but I get double duty from lip balm and use it up faster if I also use it as a cuticle cream from my nails. I never thought buying cuticle cream made sense if you already have lip balm..
I never use brow products because I think I don’t need them. I feel like natural brows look good and brow gel has always ended up dry and flaky and created more problems :(
I don't do make up much but primer is a necessity for me because my t-zone is extremely oily. I only use it on the oily areas though. Heavy makeup feels suffocating so I just do foundation, eyeshadow/liner and blush. I like the cute soft look. Always wondered about trying setting spray but they're too expensive for me at the moment (I live in the Caribbean so import price hikes). Still searching for a good affordable moisturizer that's light for the constant hot sun
I have a moisturizer but no foundation. I was considering a skin tint but after watching this video I'm not so sure. I do have a concealer if that can be used somehow? This video is very informative as I want to overall improve my makeup routine :)
You can attempt to mix the concealer on the back of your hand with moisturizer - that should thin out the coverage. You could also just use concealer all over the face as foundation, but apply it in thin layers (back of the hand then brush). It will work well if your concealer is versatile! If you tried it all and aren't satisfied, there's no shame on getting that skin tint. 🫶
@@ellerchu thank you so much for the stellar advice! 🥺 I'll give this a try and see how it goes. I actually saw a TikTok raving about the skin tint earlier today and it's so hard not to be so influenced haha. I saved it and was going to think about it later because I hate to feel buyers remorse 🥲
Girl is speaking facts. Mewatching this after I bought a primer ahhhh. 😭 well I mean I got the elf stick one and it’s just $7 and applies very smoothly. Also the tinted moisturizer is perfect for tweens and kids I think who wanna use makeup or for people who don’t like full coverage. I love my colored lip glosses tho.
I have super dry skin, I think my skin care feels fine in the moment, but I still use a hydrating primer with the Estee Lauder foundation, otherwise I I get flakey spots (my fav full coverage cause I also have a lot of reactions to things like vitamin C in a lot of other foundations, that and I'm so pale that a lot of brands don't have a light enough foundation). To help me not apply it in too thick layers, I put it in a cushion compact I bought. I find the sponges used with cushion foundations is the best way for me to apply it.
some products i really regret buying are: - any and all complexion products, im not used to how they feel or look on my skin, i actually have two separate tinted moisturizers cause when i bought my first one, i still felt like it was "too opaque" and didnt really match me that well cause drugstore skin tints have literally no shade range and i am QUITE pale, and i didnt know you could mix them with regular moisturizer so i bought a second one in hopes it would be more sheer (it wasnt) i also dont really wear consealer much unless i have one huge pimple thats taking away attention away from whatever makeup im trying to do cause the texture honestly bothers me more than the redness - powder blushes.... i bought SO MANY when i was first trying to get into makeup but i hated all the shades i could find and hated the chalky feel on my skin and theres not really a point in blush in the first place if youre not using foundation when i do want to use blush id rather use something more liquidy or creamy, if i start using foundation i might invest in a cream blush - mascara..... i bought so many cause every time i bought one i felt it looked too clumpy and assumed it was a defect but after trying SO MANY and seeing it on others who actually know what theyre doing im 90% sure i just hate how mascara looks in general it also just feels awful on my eyes idk i dont like it :( i dont wear makeup often and if i do, its either just really bold eyeliner with literally nothing else, or lip tint used both on my lips w lip oil on top, and as eyeshadow, cause i dont like when the shades dont match
I get you. I lowkey hate every mascara I try, except one. And I only wear mascara when I care about “the look.” On most days, I let my lashes flow free!!!
personal hot take - i don’t like bronzer, i don’t use bronzer, i don’t wear bronzer. my skin is fair and it looks unnatural and too muddy for me. i know so many people love it, but it’s never been an essential for me- i have to use the smallest amount, so at that point, it’s useless.
Don't force it! Your undertone and colouring might just be more suited for only blush rather than bronzers. No need to go against your gut just because everyone else loves it 😁
I have no interest in bronzers and contours either. I'm a fair Asian. Just give me my primer (skin base with spf), foundation, concealer, mattifying powder, blush, mascara, lipstick and makeup setting spray and I'm good. 😂 Ah. That's a lot of products lol. I wear eyeshadow from time to time.
as someone who oftenly picks/touches their face i don't find the foundation or bb cream step necessary. i have imperfections, yes, but i don't wanna cover them (things like moles, freckles or dermatographia) i actually enjoy only the eyeshadow and blush so those are the only things i buy! In fact i use eyeshadow as blush sometimes but things like primer, foundation, counturing are all things i don't have !
I have found that eye cream for me is unnecessary. I feel like unless you use one with specific active ingredients or you need extreme moisture in those areas it doesn’t do much. I have eczema around my eyes so for me I can’t really use any at all.
on colour correctors, i really need them as i have a lot of redness and need to cover eyebrow stubble. what i do now is just use my shade of concealer and put it on the back of my hand and swatch the eyeshadow colour i want and mix it in. i use this to make cream blush sometimes aswell or eyeshadow base.
My Kosas powder constantly gets hardpan and i have to scrape it off. The lid also fell off. Pressed powder wise, the new Tower 28 one looks more promising, but the hard pan issue bothers me and I imagine I will have the same issue.
That happened to me at first but I realized it was because my brush was slightly wet/moist - could be due to the contact of the brush to foundation to powder. I definitely want to try the Tower 28 powder though.
I am very money conscious these days, so I stopped buying makeup I don't need and have not bought anything since like Feb, because I am applying for a mortgage so trying to make all my statements look golden. I do get tempted especially if a brand I like, like Lisa Eldridge or Fenty release something, but I resist. For me, I never use bronzers, contours, primers, lip oils, lip glosses, lip stains (I only use lipsticks) and all brow products except an eyebrow pencil, so no gels/pomades etc... I love that Torriden sun cream, Torriden is one of my fave brands
Ouuu lip oils is a good one. I own them, but don’t find they are any better than a separate lip gloss or balm. I hope you get approved for the mortgage!🤞♥️
Personally, I find color correctors to be kinda useless. Maybe I am just using the wrong ones, but my dark circles are sooo dark and no color corrector has worked for me. I think it basically looks the same with or without it under concealer for me. I'm curious if you'd do a video on makeup brands that you avoid like the plague or don't really like but I know that can be controversial 👀
My skin is on the dry side and with my skincare and glowy foundation i never use highlighter anymore because my cheeks have the perfect shine before highlighter
Huh, i have completely different opinions on those products, maybe different skin, or maybe i havent found what really works for me best. Foundation doesnt hold on me, so sticky promer is greatly aprecciated, i need to use much more of a normal concealer if i dont put green under, and i dont bake, but prefer loose powder, as it gives me more control. What is an essential for others, that i almost never wear is mascara. I have black lashes, not super long, but visible, and unles i go for really intense look I dont really notice great difference in using mascara or not.
This video does not mean I don’t find any of these products valuable (I personally use most of them)! But they can be skipped depending on who you are. You are totally valid for enjoying what you love. ☺️
I definitely shouldn’t have bought another summer Fridays in a different shade! Especially in Aus since there 40 dollars each, I love summer Fridays so so much but I should have waited until I run out of my first one before I bought another.

I usually use Rephr light hydration cream under spf. A year or two ago they released it for whatever price you wanted to pay 🫨 so i got 4 or 5. I wish I could simply use Cetaphil or Cerave moisturizers but so far they all trigger my acne. The rephr is not too expensive, im ok with it.

I've recently been simplifying my "regular" makeup as I run out of previous items, and one thing I've loved for that is the NYX Wonderstick.
Yes! The more ways I find to use a product the more attached I feel to it. 🫶
I totally agree with the primer, I stopped using primer and looked more into skincare. The highlighter and eyeshadow looks the same! Thank you for this I'll definitely try this out! :)
I’m happy you enjoyed the video 🫶
I totally agree a hydrating primer is not worth it all you need is a good moisturizer or serum. I feel like you don’t need coloured eyeliner. I also feel you don’t need loose setting powder on a regular basis or pink or purple powder. I also agree you don’t need a highlighter
My first “concealer” was a bottle of product from L’Oréal that I think was supposed to be a foundation it was a really good shade for me and it was actually pretty good
I’ve had something similar. And only wore concealer when I started with makeup.
@@ellerchuYes me too I just started wearing makeup a couple years ago and I still like to use it with the elf halo glow as my base
I do rly want to see your more low key makeup! I love your style of makeup and I think it might help me 🤷🏻♀️
I got you 🫶
I love how you said that just because something is advertised a certain way, it doesn't mean that you have to use it that way.
I’m the opposite - hate cream love liquid/powder. But agree with the foundation part! Sometimes I just wear foundation and skip concealer. 😅
Hello Elle! New subscriber here 👋🏻 I just wanted to say I’m so glad I found your channel, current beauty community is all about influencers buying and buying and telling us to buy makeup and I like to question everything, so I think your channel and you give us so many things to think about to really not waste our money and question what we really like/use daily and what we don’t need. Also you have a soothing voice and it’s nice to hear you!
Greetings from Mexico 🇲🇽
and thanks for all the info you provide us with!
Hi there! I love the aspect of “questioning” that you shared. It means so much to me that you enjoy my content. Thank you for taking the time to comment and watch my videos. Much love 🥹🫶
Hi Elle! You’re so pretty!
♥️♥️♥️
This video came in the perfect time! Just before I was about to buy a new tinted lip oil/balm 😅
It’s a sign 👀
Yess Elle i agree with you primers i dont use them and it isn't for me, for me use moisturiser before i start my makeup❤😅
Moisturizer is a must 🙌
Essential for me: foundation, blush, false lashes, lipstick, lip liner, setting powder
None essential: primer, contour, eyeliner, eyeshadow, lip gloss, setting spray ❤️
I love that you choose eyelashes over eyeshadow or eyeliner!
Not exactly makeup, but I get double duty from lip balm and use it up faster if I also use it as a cuticle cream from my nails. I never thought buying cuticle cream made sense if you already have lip balm..
I never use brow products because I think I don’t need them. I feel like natural brows look good and brow gel has always ended up dry and flaky and created more problems :(
I skip eyebrows for everyday makeup too 🫢
personal non-essentials: foundation, bronzer, brow gel, fake lashes
personal essentials: blush, highlight, neutral eyeshadow, coloured lip gloss!!
I’m noticing bronzer is a common non-essential for people!
I can relate. 😅 What’s your favorite primer for oily skin?
Omgg i know that this is supposed to be a de-influencing video but when you put on that one size powder…. Likeee
It’s gorgeous on youuuu
🤣🤣
Ty! It works so well on my oily skin 10/10 for full glam
Foundation and blushes are my must have but I don't use eyeshadows and bronzer 🙃
Someone else said they don’t wear bronzer in the comments too! Only blush. 👯♀️
Estée Lauder is also a fave 🥹 I’ll have to try it with the cushion sponge! And extra hydration always helps with matte foundations.
27:23 yes to essential makeup routine
Got you ♥️
I don’t use bronzer or eyeshadow primer anymore. Only face primer I use now is either spf and primer in one, or skincare and primer in one
Amazing vid as always
Thank you ♥️
@@ellerchu ofc!
Aww, thanks for the shoutout. I love your videos too, you’re one of the few beauty creators I watch these days!
Of course. I love your thoughtful and in-depth beauty content. I feel so honored that you watch! 🫶😭
some products i really regret buying are:
- any and all complexion products, im not used to how they feel or look on my skin, i actually have two separate tinted moisturizers cause when i bought my first one, i still felt like it was "too opaque" and didnt really match me that well cause drugstore skin tints have literally no shade range and i am QUITE pale, and i didnt know you could mix them with regular moisturizer so i bought a second one in hopes it would be more sheer (it wasnt)
i also dont really wear consealer much unless i have one huge pimple thats taking away attention away from whatever makeup im trying to do cause the texture honestly bothers me more than the redness
- powder blushes.... i bought SO MANY when i was first trying to get into makeup but i hated all the shades i could find and hated the chalky feel on my skin and theres not really a point in blush in the first place if youre not using foundation
when i do want to use blush id rather use something more liquidy or creamy, if i start using foundation i might invest in a cream blush
- mascara..... i bought so many cause every time i bought one i felt it looked too clumpy and assumed it was a defect but after trying SO MANY and seeing it on others who actually know what theyre doing im 90% sure i just hate how mascara looks in general
it also just feels awful on my eyes idk i dont like it :(
i dont wear makeup often and if i do, its either just really bold eyeliner with literally nothing else, or lip tint used both on my lips w lip oil on top, and as eyeshadow, cause i dont like when the shades dont match
I get you. I lowkey hate every mascara I try, except one. And I only wear mascara when I care about “the look.” On most days, I let my lashes flow free!!!
I know that the ILIA face milk is pretty expensive so i would recomend to you The ordinary one and i feel like it is the same for 1/3 of the price🎀
I’ve had my eye on it 👀
I love it, I guess my face has never been hydrated in my life because after using it omg 🤌🏾🤌🏾 it's also lightly exfoliating I believe
personal hot take - i don’t like bronzer, i don’t use bronzer, i don’t wear bronzer. my skin is fair and it looks unnatural and too muddy for me. i know so many people love it, but it’s never been an essential for me- i have to use the smallest amount, so at that point, it’s useless.
Ouuu, I feel similarly about highlighter. Do you use blush in replacement to add color?
@@ellerchu yess i love blush!! i just simply don’t like bronzer- maybe i will grow into it oneday
Don't force it! Your undertone and colouring might just be more suited for only blush rather than bronzers. No need to go against your gut just because everyone else loves it 😁
@@chiaravc6228 yess!! thank u :)
I have no interest in bronzers and contours either.
I'm a fair Asian.
Just give me my primer (skin base with spf), foundation, concealer, mattifying powder, blush, mascara, lipstick and makeup setting spray and I'm good. 😂
Ah.
In fact i use eyeshadow as blush sometimes
but things like primer, foundation, counturing are all things i don't have !
Makeup is so personal. I love that you enjoy what you have!!
Ouuu that’s a good idea!
Hhhhhmmm, if I can think of some brands that I 100% avoid, I’ll make the video. I like the idea overall. 🫣
20 mins OMGGGGG I can't believe youtube showed me you video so soon 😭
Thanks for being early 👏🥹
As much as I suggest do’s and dont’s, I think it’s important to enjoy what you have when you have it. Love it and wear it with joy - it’s okay! ♥️
for me, I think it's Foundation and liquid Plush because I don't use makeup on daily basis
What products do you consider essential?
@@ellerchu concealer and tinted spf

Primers are not necessarily if u do a full routine skincare
💯
I usually use Rephr light hydration cream under spf. A year or two ago they released it for whatever price you wanted to pay 🫨 so i got 4 or 5. I wish I could simply use Cetaphil or Cerave moisturizers but so far they all trigger my acne. The rephr is not too expensive, im ok with it.
Whatever price you want to pay? Shook. I’m happy you found something that works. 🫶
