it seems like “it’s so good”, “it’s so cute”, and “i’m obsessed” are the only things that influencers are capable of saying in order to describe a product. it’s interesting to me that so many people will run out to buy these things when these salespeople can’t even explain why a product is “so good” or how it’s any different from the thousands of other similar products that already exist

drives me up the wall as someone who sells cosmetics for a living. people used to be able to explain why they were personally interested in a certain product, and understood there was some kind of tangible benefit (whether finish, a shade that would look good on them, a certain ingredient). now they look at you like you're the stupid one for questioning why they came in for something a 19 yr old held up on camera for 3-4 seconds and said one of these phrases. they have NO idea why they want it, yet can't be persuaded into a different shade, formula etc that we know would work better for them.

I might be in the minority, but I personally like the holiday gift sets (granted they are pretty much the only time of year I buy makeup). People don't realize how makeup can go bad and I think getting minis to try in a set, that theoretically you can use up, over the larger more expensive product, makes a lot more sense to me for my finances/ how often I use makeup.

I am the same way! I love watching de-influencing videos but a lot of them regarding holiday makeup/skincare kits and the like (esp from Sephora) will look at a set and tell you to, “ask yourself, which of these items you already own. You probably already have all these super hyped products.” No??? I don’t have none of this because I can’t afford Sephora. Or they’ll say if you are really just eyeing this set for 1-2 items then just go get the 1 item full sized. No, i will not be buying $30 blush with so much product it’s going to last me a decade in just 1 shade. I still like de-influencing videos as I have a shopping addiction but in reality I think the “addiction” is just normal American consumption, but since I’m poor it hurts when I have to spend money in general lol

What helped my spending was realizing that deals aren't real. Things aren't X% off- they're just being priced what they should cost. Buying in bulk isn't a deal if you're not going to use the item in a timely manner- it just ends up sitting around. I budget for the full price of the item and if it's on "sale" that's a pleasant surprise not a justification.

True, but if someone has already reviewed (properly and thoroughly) the products they are recommending for the Sephora sale, then it’s not just a non-reviewed list or catalogue in order to push products and overconsumption. I review products all year long and solely based on those reviews and experience with the product will I then curate a list of the best that I have tried, in order to recommend to anyone watching who happens to be looking for another blush or concealer or foundation etc. So although I see your point, there are reviewers out there who actually do their due diligence before making a Sephora recommendations video. Just something to think about. 7:35

I know a lot of people continue to use it after the expiry date, but you cant do that for too long or it could potentially give you infections and whatnot. I think that if you don't have the money to buy something, you shouldn't buy it. Also, if you're going to promote something as a creator, maybe say at the beginning remember don't buy this if you don't need it. I recently watched a video where the advice was on being more mindful when buying clothes and one point that stuck with me was “think about what this will look like in 6 months”. When you mentioned makeup that’s “good for the holidays” but maybe *only* good for the holidays I realized that’s also really good advice for makeup. Are you still going to want what you’re buying when the weather changes? When trends change? Does it look like it could break easily or get messy all the time? Take a good look at the tester and ask if you’ll still love your purchase when it gets gross and old, ask yourself if you can see yourself using it up completely.
Btw your makeup looks amazing in this vid.

I think short form content is also the problem. I was surprised to see Morgan Turner mentioned in this video because she does a great job at deinfluencing buying viral products and breaking down when it makes sense to buy the next viral blush, foundation, eyeshadow pallet etc. Meaning to look at if you have a gap in your current collection that you're looking to fill or what type of skin type or color suits these new product launches. I watch her TH-cam videos on the Sephora Favorites kits every year and she always makes the point to say that buying them is a waste of money if you're not actually going to use the majority of the products in them. But after watching this video I checked out her short form content on the Sephora Favorites kits and that message is definitely lost.
In general this is why I prefer longer TH-cam videos vs TikTok and YT shorts.

Aunties, uncles grandparents etc. It appears that the kids do not care if the colour is correct or if they will consume all the product. I believe this also adds to who buys these sets. I was at Sephora last Saturday and sets were in many baskets at the lineup at the counter. So the silent consumers are the youth in our society with the assistance of family and friends. This seems to more pervasive during the holiday season. I am not sure how this can be slowed done. I will admit that this seems like an easy way for family etc to simply holiday get through their shopping list.

I think that these sets can be useful if you split them with friends. I recently got a perfume sampler (i fell for the perfume propaganda), and gave some of the samples i wasn't fond of to some friends. This still results in some waste (some samples were not picked, and I am not sure what to do with them now). However, I think sharing large sets can limit the amount of waste and ensure that people can get luxuries at a smaller cost. Sure, that amount of lip products is absurd for one person, but giving them as gifts to people or splitting them with friends makes it a very good deal.

Radical opinion from a former sephora employee. I actually do think blushes and bronzers should be a lot smaller than they are. The demand for what is essentially a concentrated formula and high pigment payout, when often the regular consumer applies a gossamer thin layer. Yeah, huge pans aren't really essential. The price should also reflect that as well.

I am genuinely SO happy to hear this!! I'm not always sure if my comments resonate with parents. Your comment highlights some of my frustration with the content as well!! It impacts parents and kids on so many levels.

I got disappointed by the new UD formula & 20 years of buying thier products was gone, puff, like that. I found a much cheaper indie brand and their 15 pan pallet, I got last year, has tens of thousands of combos in it, so I'm good. Don't know how these influencers constantly have a new pallet of eyeshadow for each video. Yup, bit of a Womble here - I've not bought a telly in 20 years, I rescue them from the pavement. Material things don't buy happiness but making connections & having interesting conversations can certainly help. Love the video, glad you're spreading the word. I've subscribed, I like your style 😊

Ive been on a low buy mission this year and it made me appreciate what i have so much more. Also everything gets used and its not only the high feeling of having something new. Seeing people upload several hauls for just this one sale now feels even more bizarre to me

I have been using the same stuff for years. The only time I walk into a Sephora is if I want to smell perfume or if I actually need to repurchase something. I will personally never understand people who buy their paycheck worth of stuff in there, but I also don’t blame them. Every time I go in I feel like there is a new brand with a new shelf. The beauty market is so oversaturated. I feel bad for those who are easily influenced because of that.

I consider myself pretty minimalist when it comes to consumption but even that statement you made near the beginning about "If you didn't know you needed it before you saw the video, you don't actually need it" is pretty powerful and did some rewiring in my brain
