I just bought a 6-speed 2009 GTI for my son as his first car. Man, he may have to pry it out of my hands to get a chance to drive it. I immediately fell in love with it.
@@ptbro3334 I bought mine back in August too! My father hasn’t been into cars for a while, but my MK6 is showing a side of him I never thought I’d see. He helped me buy mine and every once in a while since then he asks me to take my car! Never thought I’d see the day haha
the MKV GTI is one of the best driving cars I've ever been in. Super smooth, quiet and solid ride quality. But at the same time it's handling is sharp, planted and sporty. best of both worlds really.
I’ve got a mark 7 Golf R but I remember being 17 and driving my mums mk5 GTI. I miss that car so much. It was fun and I remember it being more enjoyable than my R!
autobahnproven lol. i hope to be in the same boat. I'm about to collect my mk7.5 on Monday and i plan to keep it forever that's why I'm getting it new. first and probably last new car.
I got a mk5, mettalic grey colour, 3door, leather heated seats, arm rest, CD changer and monza18"2wheels, full service history and 3owners on it. Got it for 5 grand back in 2015 on 122000 miles. Absolutely love the drive on it.
We sold a mk5 gti brand new in 05 to an older lady, i was 16 at the time, i did the mantenence for it for 9 years and then She bought a brand new mk7 gti. It had 126km on it an i thougt this is the car i want. Replaced the timing belt and chain and have been driving it sinds. Damn i love my car! I still remember When i was 16 and we deliverd the car brand new thinking it was a supercool. Now owning it i love it even more
I purchased my mk5 gti, and to be honest i love it, I've remapped it to stage 1 and it drives like rocket and its quite economical i think it gives me 33mpg for london roads. I've always wanted one since there was a hype around it.
I just sold my Mk 5 2007 GTI to a close friend. The car has 282,000 km on the odometer. I bought her new in late 2006. It's the longest I've ever owned a car. It will be very hard passing the keys over next week. The original brakes lasted to 206,000 km. Bye, bye GTI. She will be hard to replace.
You mean the same brake pads that equip a myriad of other cars in the VAG universe? Brakes lasting has nothing to do with the car but with the driver. What are you? A brainlet?
My dad bought a manual transmission Mk5 gti in 2006 when I was 7 years old and I remember being excited because of it’s sound and the 200bhp which to me was insane at that time. I still remember the time I was in the backseat on the autobahn on the way to my grandma. We were being hopelessly late so my dad pushed the pedal down and accelerated up to over 200 kph in order to get there in time. Or how we traveled the grossglockner high alpine road or how only my dad and me were on the autobahn trying to find out how much difference there is between the real speed and the speed shown on the dashboard because he found some kind of easter egg where you had to press a certain combination of buttons and the actual speed would show in the displays that usually show the temperature of the air conditioning. Sadly my dad sold it in 2013 and I still miss it because I never had more fun with a car I never drove.
I bought a Mk6 GTI new back in 2010 and absolutely loved it; a stage 1 tune brought it to life and it was a properly rapid car when driven smoothly on twisty roads. After a few years in an Audi S3 I've come back to VW with two Mk5s, including an immaculate 2008 R32, and it never fails to put a huge smile on my face. Sure it's not as polished or smooth as the Mk6, and is nowhere near as quick, but the car oozes character and the V6 sounds incredible. I enjoy driving it and even just looking at it far more than I did my '6. I'll be hanging onto it for quite a while I think.
Mk5 GTI all the way, especially when you swapped in an MK6 Golf R engine and put in a Big Turbo like Precision 5858, tune it with Eurodyne and make monster power. It's a blast to have the best of both worlds.
None of the MKV GTIs in the USA came with halogen headlights. It wasn't an option here. They all came with bi-xenon headlights. Rabbits and Jettas came with halogen headlights. GLIs had bi-xenons.
I’ve only driven one mk5 gti, and honestly, I think it’s the best. Everything about it was done perfectly, from the transmission, to the styling of the body and interior. No gti can top the mk5
the mk5 made the base of all new upcoming gtis now and in future. they just update the mk5 over and over. mk1, mk2 and so on they were totally different cars, but today its just a newer version of the mk5 whit more boost and luxorious interieur. I LOVE THE MK5 (drive an ed30 :P)
I really love my MKVI GTI. 2010 model, White, manual, 2-door! I'm going to drive it as long as it will go! This is my 3rd GTI and the best one I've owned. The 2-doors look much sportier than the 4-doors.
hey guys! i'm deciding between a gti mk5 and a mk6, what would be better for the city and having fun? i'm in love with the mk6 design but everyone talks about the mk5, idk what to do
Yeah I mean my r32 is a bit of a gimmick I feel I raced a mk5 gti yesterday and while yes I did spunk all over his face the car just feels not exciting makes loads of noise and it pretty quick but I think the gti would be more fun cos of the front wheel drive and how light they are
I bought a well looked after 14yr old 2005 Mk5. It was a joy to drive, practical and could be loaded up with camping stuff without complaining. Wonderful car.
Just found this and enjoyed it immensely. I had a Mk1 (1.8), a Mk2 (8v) and now run a 12 year old Mk5. It's cost me a small fortune to run, thanks to age, rust and the DSG mechatronic unit (beware!), but I love it and hope I'll have it for a few years yet.
Definitely a cop out to just say the Mark 6 is a re-skinned Mark 5, has a ton of improvements including interior, power, less understeering and just a better looking car overall
Just bought a 2006 MK5 Golf GTI over in Sydney Australia for $10,000 AUD with 147,000 km on the clock. It's the rare laser blue, a manual with black leather interior, sunroof and I'm very, very happy with my purchase...
I can understand your choice, not mine but cannot complain. For me MKII followed by MkVI . I have had several MkII's GTi's all 8v. The MKV GTi is a great car that I never got to own On a side note, I prefer the MKIV R32 over the same version in the MKV.
Just watched all 5 parts of this series, enjoyed them all. Alex is a pretty good presenter. One slight criticism- hopefully taken constructively: I think it would have 'flowed' better if you reviewed them in order I.E Mk 1 first, ending at 7, or starting at 7, then 1, ending at 5/6. The Mk6 should also have been given more time. You did say it was very good, but how does it differ from the Mk5? As I said though, overall, a good watch!
I made a mistake of not buying the Mk5 and bought one of those other “faster” hot hatches. What a mistake I made 😔 I would probably still own it rather than experience a horror story of an over powered bum dragger.
I own a MK4 Golf since new with upgrades and really like it. But the Mk4 needs the upgrades. I've never driven a 1,5,6,7, but the MK2 with the 16V is pretty rad and the MK3 with the VR6 has an amazing sound with the intake opened up. Yeah it would be a really tough choice.
I owned a Mk4 1.8T, and upgraded to a Mk5 GTI. Let me tell you man, night and fuckin day. Literally everything about the Mk5 is better. Build quality, practicality, efficiency, power, looks, literally everything. Definitely still familiar, still a Volkswagen, but in a whole new way
Mk5 fsi had cam wear issues, burned oil. Tsi, cam chain tensioner failures, burned oil, leaking valve cover causing water pump failure, high pressure pump failure. Door latch, lock actuator, door harness failures. Other than that there well built.
I have a 2006 MKV with 125000 miles. Many extended warranty fixes have been performed by the dealer free of charge. Things I had to do besides maintenance: cam follower replacement, intake valve cleaning (tbd), cv boots replacement (tbd), thermostat replacement (shitty location), diverter valve replacement. It burns oil. The remote control doesn't work, and the door locks require some weird sequencing to lock the doors. Also the front seat doesn't slide forward properly on my coupe. Still the best car I've had the pleasure to drive.
Looks wise the MK6 is better than MK5 however I prefer the looks of the R32/ 20th anniversary over the MK6. However I'll drive my mk6 till it's wheels fall off. It's quick, practical and a blast to drive.
Just bought my 2009 mk5 w/62k miles for $6500 dsg clean title, absolutely love my car and can't wait to stage it with unitronic love the review! Any tips or advice what I should try upgrade asap? Thanks guys
driving a Golf V 2.0 Turbo myself. Unfortunately a TDI, but I drive too many miles and I don't have the budget for a GTI... yet. But I still love it and think it was the biggest evolutionary step in the GTI's history, especially compared to the mark IV. 2 Liter engine, which is used till today - DSG, which is used till today (brand new polo GTI), nice amount of nostalgic content, good fun, good looks and great comfort. What more do you need?
Im picking up a mk5 2marrow morning.its already had some work done on it.so thats cool i guess other then now i have to figure out whats been done to it because the dealer wasnt sure but knows there was. Im sure of Coil overs Bigger turbo intake And stage 2 clutch
I have a mk5 gti , but I changed the wheels similar to edition 30 ones , also did not like the rear back bumper so got a r32 one but with one hole for the gti version not centre holes colour coded looks so much better and people have said how much better it looks now ,,
Still have my 07 Gti. It has about 108k miles. I am first owner. The air bag fault light comes and goes, seat belt light issues (turned it off with vag com), door locks started becoming faulty. Most mechanic stuff isn’t too much of a problem. Had to replace Pcv valve. Coil packs replaced under warranty. I also have to stay on top of the cam followers. I still have replaced the brakes except the rear brake pads. Rotors have been measured and still with a lot of thickness left. Overall I am happy with the Mk5 Gti but I must say that $300 for a door lock fix is rediculous.
I had the mark 4 gti and liked it .Ive the mark 5 16 years now and still love it . I think it is a better looking golf than the mark 7 , but obviously not quite as quick .
I've owned so many Golfs from the mk1 up to the mk6. I loved the mk6 but the engine is a weak point (and different to the mk5). It's thr only car I ever owned where the engine catastrophically died in me. I would own a 5 but not a 6 again.
I've owned a mk 1campaign edition 1.8,. a mk 2 16v (brilliant) for nearly 10 years, then a mk 5 R32 for another 10. I'm a bit out of date now. The mk 5 is the last golf I've driven. It sounds like peak golf is probably a mk7 R. I'd also be pretty happy with an up gti to be honest. I'm not in too much of a hurry any more....
As far as build quality goes, if you’ve ever pulled these cars apart to do bodywork on, the MK5 GTI is noticeably better in its design and the fit & finish. This model probably had more $$$ spend on its R&D than any before or after. The panel gaps and the way each panel lines up with the other is next level build quality even by todays standards.
Mk5 gti is a peach especially the edition 30 with k04 turbo. The mk2 GTI was a great machine too. Mk1 the icon just awesome, must have been a revelation back then. What the hell were they thinking with the hideous mk4 gti I will never know?
I’m currently driving a 2019 mk7.5. And it’s really an exciting vehicle, although a little too electronic for me. I had a mk6 base golf 2.5. I sold it because I didn’t need two cars anymore. I made a great mistake selling that mk6. Oh well ya live and learn. RickGTI
Love my Autobahn Edition MK6 GTI with DSG. Have BBS RGR wheels backordered and a set of Michelin PS4's waiting to go on. I like the MkV and MKVII, but not as well as the VI. Everything about it's styling just speaks to me.
I bought a 06 new. I haven't driven one since that even compares. That car felt like it cost twice as much as it did and I was forever looking for reasons to drive somewhere. Too bad my wife hated it (hatchback hate) and it started squeaking and rattling like a 20 year old car after 1 month.
I just bought a 6-speed 2009 GTI for my son as his first car. Man, he may have to pry it out of my hands to get a chance to drive it. I immediately fell in love with it.
I just got a Mk6 for my birthday and I love it!

Your R is trash.
Jealousy will get you nowhere in life.
Had my MkV GTI for ten years now. It still looks great, goes great. Will I hold onto it for another decade? Maybe. Future classic?
autobahnproven lol. i hope to be in the same boat. I'm about to collect my mk7.5 on Monday and i plan to keep it forever that's why I'm getting it new. first and probably last new car.
If it will be a classic It will be a classic in at least another 20 years. Golfs are so popular it takes about that long for them to get rare
Keep it
Mk5 gti still look fresh till now..
I have had my pirreli edition mark v for 10 years, still brings a smile to my face, It still looks awesome 10 years later.
Make sure to replace those tensioners and cam followers.also make sure to always change DSG fluid every 30-40k .

Glad he moved to another channel, he couldnt drive at all!

Strange to see a mk5 gti with halogens, here in the states they only came with the bi xenons
The NZ New ones had halogens as standard. Was a option that not many people got here. Japanese imports mostly or all had xenons
Actually not true. Most MKV GTIs in the states came with Halogen headlights
None of the MKV GTIs in the USA came with halogen headlights. It wasn't an option here. They all came with bi-xenon headlights. Rabbits and Jettas came with halogen headlights. GLIs had bi-xenons.

Right...
tanafc96 mk5 looks more aggressive my opinion I have pics of mine beside a mk7 an I honestly like mk5
It looked old when it came out.
boosted mk5gti mk7 looks gay
I had a Mk5 Gti and swapped it for a MK5 R32. Big mistake. The GTi is a better car.
Del Johnson why is that ...
Is it becoz of fuel cumpstion
heavier, slower, less tunable, yep worse fc. the sound makes up for all its shortcoming of course.
I sell my r32 mk5 and looking for mk5 gti 😀

I really enjoyed watching this guide, thank you. May have been worth mentioning interior water leaks and sump pick-up sludge clogging.
I was obsessed with the MkV back in 2004-2005 before it was available in North America. Sadly I never bought one, but I still want one today.
I adore my GTI. MK5 is a budget tu ners dream.
Mk5 all the way what a car

I may be wrong, my next car is always golf gti, mark 4, 5, 6 and now 7.5, to be honest, nothing can compare to the 5 !
What you think of the 6?
I think is the better 5.
Definitely a cop out to just say the Mark 6 is a re-skinned Mark 5, has a ton of improvements including interior, power, less understeering and just a better looking car overall
I miss Alex. He does such a great job.
Just bought a 2006 MK5 Golf GTI over in Sydney Australia for $10,000 AUD with 147,000 km on the clock. It's the rare laser blue, a manual with black leather interior, sunroof and I'm very, very happy with my purchase...
To pass the MK6 off as a bit of a cheat considering it has a different engine, exterior and interior is laughable.
You should do a comparo of this, the EP3 Civic Type R and a same vintage RS Clio. Glad to see you back
The Mk5 Gti rekindled the popularity of White as a genuine colour option.
That's called excellent marketing on Volkswagen's part haha
I can understand your choice, not mine but cannot complain.

mk6 > Mk5. the plastic siding on the mk5 and the door rust disqualifies it.

Jordon my 07 I just sold has a GIAC tune. I highly recommend it as I never had a problem with my car. The tune was excellent.
david dykeman would you recommend them for ko4 or big turbo upgrade as well
I can't recommend their ko4 or big turbo as I never had them myself.
Where's the Mk. VI drive around?
Ikr way nicer car
I love my mkv so much. The gti is such an easy platform to modify
Mk2 and Mk5 are best I think... I have a mk2 gli personally and man is it a blast. But for daily driving, mk5 is where its at.

I am slightly biased as I own a MK5 GTi and it is the best car I have owned to date. Best all round car...as they say its all things to all men.
Its what I drive every day, and I love my MKV
Why have these videos been reposted?
Great series this! Hope ull do the same for the R line
Yes can we have Alex back please??!
I own a mk6 GTI and I like my mk4 R32 and 20th GTI more.. Idk what mk4 you drove but its by far a much more fun car to drive.
Mk6 I think is the best golf ever made, it’s solid and classy, the Mk5 is pretty good also. Mk8 is definitely the worst golf so far
Mk 8 is a terrible looking golf VW definitely gone backwards with mk8 looks like a family hatchback
When I think of a hot hatch it has a RS trophy badge on it
For me the mk5 gti is best the ed30 with 230 or limited edition with 240
And the gti normal with 200 hp and the dg250 my dream
Mk5 gti is a peach especially the edition 30 with k04 turbo. The mk2 GTI was a great machine too. Mk1 the icon just awesome, must have been a revelation back then. What the hell were they thinking with the hideous mk4 gti I will never know?
Um, where was the comparison of the mk6 in this video??
Why is it better than the 6? Isn't it even more powerful and modern? And basically a mk5?
Golf is a golf... All favorites for me❤️🙂
the golf 5 its the great gti
That rear plastic bumper,, otherwise a terrific all rounder hot hatch!
You showed the mk6 for like 10seconds
I’m currently driving a 2019 mk7.5. And it’s really an exciting vehicle, although a little too electronic for me. I had a mk6 base golf 2.5. I sold it because I didn’t need two cars anymore. I made a great mistake selling that mk6. Oh well ya live and learn. RickGTI
Love my Autobahn Edition MK6 GTI with DSG. Have BBS RGR wheels backordered and a set of Michelin PS4's waiting to go on. I like the MkV and MKVII, but not as well as the VI. Everything about it's styling just speaks to me.
Mk1,2,5 are my favourites
Totally agree. 👍
mk5 all the way
He can say what he likes and he's probably right but for me I like the ones I had as a kid the Mk2, 4, 5, 7 and 8. It's a golf so their all good.
I bought a 06 new. I haven't driven one since that even compares. That car felt like it cost twice as much as it did and I was forever looking for reasons to drive somewhere. Too bad my wife hated it (hatchback hate) and it started squeaking and rattling like a 20 year old car after 1 month.
And edition 30 vs edition 35? That would be a good match
MK5!!!! Loved :)
Mrk 6
i have a mk3 but i heard this is too heavy,,,i like driving it on a day basis though
Super video
