    I bought my Marlin.357 thirty years ago and it’s still my favorite ! When showing people I would fire a .38 reload then a factory.38 then a reload .357 and for the finale a Factory.357 round ! When I lived in a populated part of a town I would pop the woodchucks in my garden very quietly with a reloaded .38. But when hunting a .357 would knuckle a deer at over 130 yards. All with iron sights. Marlin says this is the second most accurate rifle but I believe it’s the most ! Oh great shooting at the steel !! Fun huh

      @@GunsGearOnTargetTrainingLLC Any worries with round nose projectiles in that tube mag? I have been using flat nosed semi-wad cutters to avoid tip to primer contact in the tube.. cant get that ammo anymore and worried about the round noses possibly setting of a chain fire in the mag.. especially at near/full mag.

    I was driving from San Antonio to San Angelo Texas in about 1997, and stopped at a gun show in some small town (I forget where), and ended up buying one of these in .357 (as opposed to 44Mag). It's serial number puts it in the Marlin years (1995) before the Remington takeover.
    LOVE THIS GUN. It's my favourite. Light, agile, quick. And a dead straight shooter.

      I just bought the same gun in .357 mag. It's a "Remlin", BUT the quality is top notch all the way!! Great metal to wood mating, nice blue, dark and even, and the gun shoots any ammo you've got with out a problem, even steel cased Tula. Now my older 1895 in 45/70 wasn't finished half as nice! The blue got junked for a Parkerized finish from Gun Black in Interlaken N.Y., and it had the action polished by a real gun smith.
      NOW it shoots well. But I still prefer the 1894C with .38's. It's just so fun to shoot!

    I have one of these too, I actually had to sew a soft piece of leather around the lever where my knuckles hit every time I cock it..helped a lot..I just read that it is much more comfortable to cock with an oversized loop lever installed...but they cost 2/3 of what I paid for my rifle so forget that! Fun accurate rifle though!

      Good luck finding one without shelling out ludicrous quantities of cash nowadays....the popularity of the gun for Cowboy Action Shooting has seen most examples snatched up off the market and the fact that they aren't made anymore doesn't help matters. If you do find one, make sure it is an older Marlin made gun, not one of the newer 'Remlin' made guns from after the Freedom Group buyout when Remington took over manufacturing.

    Built by Marlin before 2009 ish and check to make sure it was built in Connecticut and not New York. (Remington). Back left of the barrel should have JM markings. These levers are fantastic woods guns and incredibly fun to shoot. Great Video.

    I'v watched several of your lever action videos. I'v noticed you do most of your shooting when the weather is cool enough you wear jackets and gloves. Do you find the lever and trigger guard to small to operate with gloves on comfortable? What do you think about the larger loop levers, and would you justify the cost or recommend it for others? I have several lever guns and I just wanted to know what you thought. Thanks for the great video series.

    I was looking at lever rifles about a month ago and the Henry beat out the New Marlin for me. Henry's cycle smooth as silk, they're sweeties. The only Henry negative is the tube fed magazine instead of the side loader on most other lever guns, How often am I going to do a tactical reload with the lever rifle? Hopefully never in reality but that is kinda one of the reasons I went with a lever rifle this time and selling my 2 Saiga sporters, possible legislation against detachable magazines here in Ca. I am keeping my two AR's because there are work arounds for them but in case that isn't enough, I wanted the 44 mag Henry, It's about a docile in the midst of anti gunners as a SSA revolver.

    Excellent video! Sadly, if that carbine was chambered in .32 Special or .38-55 it would be/have been far superior to the .357 as a hunting carbine, and as a result, a dependable deer and up caliber. And yes, I'm a long time hunter, and experienced with the .357 in both handguns and carbines. The most recent "RemingMarlins" are inferior to the Marlins of yester year which results in many hunters, shooters, and collectors to prefer the "JM" stamped rifles and carbines to the junk that is being produced today. I for one, will continue to seek out, and when I can find and afford them, purchase the older Marlins over the current production models.

    I wish someone had a good reason as to why lever guns have hammer spurs. Manually decocking is dangerous, it's always cocked when there's a round in the chamber so you don't get a different trigger or anything, it's not a loaded chamber indicator, nobody should expect to have to re-strike a primer...

    • @GunsGearOnTargetTrainingLLC
      @GunsGearOnTargetTrainingLLC  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Actually the spurred hammer gives you a tremendous benefit. When lowering the hammer on a live round that additional friction is extremely helpful. If you are uncomfortable lowering a hammer on a live round perhaps you should practice more and get extensive training. I agree with you it can be dangerous especially if you do not have the training. If you have the training and know how to operate this fire and properly lowering the hammer is certainly something that is possible to do it without a wrist to you or others.

    • @BenjaminISmith
      @BenjaminISmith 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@GunsGearOnTargetTrainingLLC why would you lower the hammer even if it was safe? Springs don't wear out like that, there's a cross pin safety or a tang safety already, and they're drop safe no matter what. I own lever guns and I only drop the hammer for the fun of cocking it again when I'm ready

    years ago i had a remlin 1894 c, it would not cycle .38 special. the fit and finish was not so good. i found a jm stamped 1894 at the billings mt cabellas and had it shipped to the cabellas in my state. when it showed up i noticed the inside of the receiver was just as rough as the remlin i used to have. the blueing and wood finish were gorgeous. i decided not to buy it. months later i found a rossi r92. wood finish not so good, blueing decent. i've taken it completely apart and cleaned it. a very well made rifle. it will handle any .38 or .357 round. accurate. sights are not as nice. but 1/2 the price of the jm marlin and i don't have to worry about scratches on one of my walking guns for bear, wolf, and lion country.

  • @petebentley3156
    @petebentley3156 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    That gun was made in the late 1999 or 2000's,because of the crossbolt safety and checkering on the stock and the receiver.i have the same gun that I bought in 1981,with on crossbolt safety and no checkering on the stock or receiver.and I have shot one like you have right now and its not worth the money or time that the older one in the early and late 1980's are worth.as far as shooting,but from 2015 and up the retooling of marlin made better 1894 lever action rifles except like me everyone hates the crossbolt safety system on the newer marlin lever action of today!?

      Probably a .44 magnum lever action. Or even better, a 45/70.

      @dlc1119 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Either, but the grizz will probably tear ya a new one before he dies. Get a 45-70.

      If you only had those two cartridge's to choose from - I would definitely take the 30-30 with 170 grain bullets.

      357mag was made for big game. 357mag revolvers were considered Bush guns. Powerful round enough for bears

    That Lawyer button (safety) is an abomination on these beautiful Marlin Lever-guns.The half-cock notch on a lever action is the safety.

    Nice to see a lever gun run well. A trip to a competitive cowboy action meet will convince anyone who wants to know if they work or not. Not all of them shoot softball ammo, and still crank em out. Something like 4 empty cases in the air at once with no misses is real.

    yea nothing like working action of a lever or bolt action gun. ..pump action doesn't even come close

    Loaded with .357 would this gun take down a Grizzzly at 25 yards? Also which is more powerful this with .357 or a .30-30?

    • @georgebush3401
      @georgebush3401 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      30 30 kicks the shit out of 357.... but 357 is still good, it's just a pistol caliber

    • @georgebush3401
      @georgebush3401 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      if you really want to kill a grizzly I would go with at least 30 30

    • @Emil-ul4kb
      @Emil-ul4kb 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +George Bush So the .357 would be good for coyotes, wolves, mountain lions at close range?

    • @georgebush3401
      @georgebush3401 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Emil yeah I would say it would be good for the dogs... lol make sure you hit the cat good, don't gut shot it

    • @Emil-ul4kb
      @Emil-ul4kb 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +George Bush A gut shot is really painful, I would think it would stop a cougar, of course you can always keep shooting at it.
