  • Danny Michael, associate curator at the Buffalo Bill Center of the West museum, breaks down Rockstar's western epic.
Red Dead Redemption 2 saw Rockstar return to the frontiers of the Wild West for a prequel to the seminal Red Dead Redemption. Rockstar went out of their way to make Red Dead Redemption 2 feel and look authentic. We brought Danny in to see if Rockstar delivered on that promise.
In this video Danny breaks down old western towns and cities, hunting, train robberies, firearms, and architecture. Part 2 of this series is on the way so make sure to subscribe to GameSpot to see more in the future.

in terms of the hunting mechanics of the game, i find that it'd be pretty difficult to have Arthur haul around hundreds of pounds of animal flesh and antlers. especially considering his only mode of transport is a horse or a stolen wagon. it'd be pretty cool if the game let us buy the hunting wagons in singleplayer so we would have a place to store them for easy transportation. i imagine having Arthur only take a handful of meat and the skin was just a technical limitation.

I imagine that if it would've made for satisfying gameplay, they would have done it, but some things were abridged to keep from dragging out the game too far and making it excessively tedious.

A lot of casual gamers like myself don’t like playing online but Rockstar makes so much money with GTA online that making a DLC would mean having potential loss of profits.
I wouldn’t be surprised if production of GTA VI costs 700-900 million (marketing included.

It's one of the best museums I've ever seen and in terms of specifically history of the American West it's second to none. Their firearms gallery is a sight to behold. Close by in Cody is also the Cody Dug Up Gun Museum which is also a fascinating and unique collection very much worth the visit. Cody is basically the gateway to Yellowstone Park from Wyoming too so if you ever find yourself going to magnificent Yellowstone spend a day in Cody.

When I went, I actually stayed in Cody and drove to Yellowstone. Cody is great to stay in and the only "normal" town in the area - everything else is camping or touristy with limited resources. Just beware that it's 45 min from Cody, WY to the gate of Yellowstone and another 45 min to Old Faithful.

To be fair to the prices for weapons and ammo, it's a video game, and money's not very hard to come by. You shoot tons of people throughout the story, and most people in those fights tend to carry at least a few dollars on them, along with some kind of valuable you can sell. A lot of story missions also involve robbing someone or something. So, money's a lot more common in the game than would be in real life. So they'd have to raise the prices to make obtaining every weapon at least somewhat challenging.
As for the animations of skinning an animal. I'm pretty sure they weren't worried about showing the process. More so that they didn't want the animation to go on too long. It's already a fairly long animation in terms of a video game, and it gets a tad old seeing it every time, especially if you're specifically out in the world to hunt, and you have to sit and watch it over, and over again. Even the weapon reload animations, while fairly accurate, have some inaccuracies for the sake of speeding the animation up.

Well no kidding man. Cigarettes were under $2 in the 90s early 00.
A can of salmon is cheaper today than it is in the game.

    Also the game is made pretty well by the hands of British, I didn't think they allowed cowboys to be discussed all that well amongst their people. {Amazing.. 😸👌}

Hunting in red dead redemption 2 is painful as you cannot just hit the animal just anywhere, but its moer like you need a specific weapon with a specific ammo and so few animals will have something more and you need to shoot a specific animal for a pelt worth anything and hit it in a specific place ot not damage the pelt.
You could spend hours finding a singular high quality animal.
Now this is assuming the animal doesn't despawn while you are following its track.

It sounds odd when you don’t say Johnathan Ferguson but this is good. We need more. Get John for guns in general then experts from different parts of history to go fully in depth.

Too bad they didn't show him stopping a train in a remote location and than have the law show up within seconds. Or if the guard on the rear of the train sees you the conductor immediately stops the train. They just show the situations that they got kinda right.

I have been run over by a deer at work. Ripped up my Kevlar , broke my x26 taser in half ripped my mic cord out of my radio and scuffed me up a bit. Would not recommend.

just noticed that whoever recorded the gameplay for this gave the mauser engravings, which you shouldn't do. it gives you no tactical advantage whatsoever
