    Told me in the confirmation email of my Tao Tao thunder that it's just shipping oil and to remove it in the first few days. Oh and thanks for the amazing video. I'll admit I was absolutely clueless about scooters but these videos were a great help.

    Don't check your oil while it's running. You can check it cold or hot, but always give the oil a few seconds to settle after the engine is shut off.

    The enricher gets hot and expands to block additional fuel. Should be fully closed in 5 minutes or less. May be lean if it runs better while the enricher is allowing fuel past. You could unplug the enricher and see if it improves. Then it won't heat up and will stay at full enrichment all of the time.

    Yes it was a stud. I was surprised that it wasn't a bolt because it was zinc plated. Not the nearly black color of a hardened stud. No wonder it snapped off so easy. I removed it with vise grips. And replaced it with a hardened stud from Ace Hardware... Wish they had one in China.

    Great Video!!!!!!! I learned how to maintain my Tao I just bought for $180. However after changing my gear oil, it started leaking out the hose next to the drain plug. Please advised on how to correct this. Thank you.

    • @49ccscoot
      @49ccscoot  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      It is probably overfilled. That's a vent/overflow tube, so it will eventually correct itself. The other option is to drain and refill.

    • @hawaii1987
      @hawaii1987 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      ***** Thanx for the quick response. It was during the end of the draining. When I went to refill the gear oil it just flowed out. Is there a valve like a pcv??? I put a bolt in the end of the hose for now. Your thoughts???

    • @49ccscoot
      @49ccscoot  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      There's no valve. It's just a passage case into the cases. I've got a vid of the gearbox bearing swap where you could probably see it if interested. I'm not sure how it could just flow out if you're putting only 120ish ml in there. It's normal if you overfilled it, but if all the gear oil came out something has to be wrong inside of there. If you aren't sure, I'd suggest draining your gear oil into a container so it can be measured to make sure there's oil in there and a proper amount. If the container is clean and the oil was just put in, you should be able to reuse it, just don't mix it in with new gear oil in the bottle.

    Hi, so I finally attempted to do the oil change and gear change today. For the oil I filled it up to the 1/2 of the third x from full basically so in the middle. For gear oil I filled it till it dropped. When the gear oil is done dripping I put a flash light and I see the oil matching with the bottom of the fill max. When I move wheel I can see oil moving and eventually even. So currently my scooter has 55 miles or km I'm not sure. When should I do the next change for the gear and engine.

    Thanks for your help. I was replacing the stock header bolts with the two ten mm nuts and lockwasher but snapped off the bolt on the second. How do I replace the sheared bolt? Thanks again.

    • @49ccscoot
      @49ccscoot  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      If there's anything left sticking out, use a pair of vise grips to grab the stud tight and turn it counterclockwise to loosen till it's free. If it's broken off flush it's more of a problem. Then you need a screw/bolt extractor/EZ out. The head may have to come off for that. Gotta learn to be real careful with these small fasteners. They just can't take a lot of torque. It happens though. I've snapped some off that hardly took any force. Good luck with it.

    • @scottgudsg
      @scottgudsg 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      I actually broke the bolt shaft not the head. I was tightening the nut with lock washer as you suggested then was going to snug up a second nut against the first. So how do I access the top of the bolt head to unscrew it and replace it with a new bolt ? From looking at it from below it looks very inaccessible.

    • @49ccscoot
      @49ccscoot  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you were installing two nuts to secure it, it's not a bolt. It's a stud which means there is no head. It's just a threaded rod. If the first nut is still on there take that off then grab the stud with vise grips. If it broke off flush with the head it's going to be a pain. You'll have to use an extractor of some sort.
      Removing A Broken Bolt Or Stud With A Bolt Extractor
      It's prob gonna be a pain getting in there so you may have to take the head off.

    • @49ccscoot
      @49ccscoot  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you mark it as shown in the vid, it doesn't matter as long as you do it the same way as when you mark the stick. Otherwise do it with it sitting naturally, which is generally with the front wheel on the ground or you can take it off the stand and check it with the scoot upright and level.

    Hi, do you think a 90jet will be too much for a 50cc scooter. I am currently using a 85 main jet and seems that every time I add a little gas from start it will die. But second time comes it's back to normal. It is much better with the 85 jet since the original jet that came with my taotao thunder was a 78. What are your recommendation? I also pulled the plug out after a 15min ride and the tip of the spark is white. I am sorry for posting my question on different videos? • @49ccscoot
      @49ccscoot  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It should be fine as long as you got it drained. On some engines, if you get the wrong bolt you could have other parts come out that you need to be careful with.

    I have a high performance cdi a high performance carb a con airfilter and a after market exhaust would it be ok to put the big bore kit on it it runs great now but I would want a little more power so 80cc upgrade should be good? With what I have should it run fine because I heard of you don't have some upgrades it can make it slower?

    • @49ccscoot
      @49ccscoot  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Inchyladas You should be alright using a BBK. Just be sure to tune the carb after and adjust the CVT if needed. 80cc (actually 72cc/47mm bore) is what I'd recommend. Too much risk or big end conrod bearing failure with the larger kits IMO.

    is the regular (Not Synthetic) gear oil fine with a 50cc scooter, 80 90??

  • @michaelwong5106
    @michaelwong5106 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    For gear oil, do I wait for it to completely stop dripping before putting back in the nut where you fill in the gear oil. Or can little drip be ok. Can you overfill or under fill gear oil . When I change the engine and gear oil how many km do I need to wait for another change

    • @49ccscoot
      @49ccscoot  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Michael Wong It's best to try and get all of it out. A very slow drip is alright. Blow into the filler hole while it's draining. Don't put your mouth on it. Usually even a little pressure from blowing in there will push a bit more out. You could over or underfill it, but it's an incredibly easy process. I like to at least change it every 2500 miles / 4000km.

    • @49ccscoot

      +Alexandria Summers I' not enough of an oil expert to tell you 100%. I've pretty much always used 10W40 or 15W40 in my 4Ts. Most manuals recommend those.

  • @michaelwong5106
    @michaelwong5106 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hey this is mike, I have two more question will Castro 10w40 work and for gear I have Castro 80w90. Do you recommend using synthetic for the gear oil since I know that when brand new you should use conventional for the engine. Also how do you know that you fill the gear oil enough and for engine can you stay within the marks that are originally on dipstick

    • @49ccscoot
      @49ccscoot  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Michael Wong Those oils should work. I use synthetic from new in the gearbox. The only reason for using conventional in the engine for break-in is ring seating, which is not an issue in the gearbox. Gear oil usually has a graduated container so you can look at the side and see how much you've used. If not, buy a syringe and fill it that way. You can go by the marks if you'd like. It's faster to know how much you're putting in and dump it in vs constantly trying to check.

    • @49ccscoot
      @49ccscoot  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's a vent/overflow. Gear oil probably got in passages that lead to it when it was tipped over and now it's running out.

  • @49ccscoot
    @49ccscoot  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    Motorcycle oil is designed to work with wet clutches, which these don't have. Standard oil will make the clutch slip if it's a wet clutch. You can actually use Rotella with wet clutches too, unless something has changed with it recently. At any rate, there's no reason the oil should be causing overheating and lack of performance for you if you're using the same as I am. I think you need to look elsewhere. Lean condition, cooling fan shroud with debris, etc...

    While changing Gear Oil, I accidentally made the scooter stand in upright position without putting the bolt back in and most of the oil spilled. I assumed I spilled almost all and put another 100ML approx in. How do I check if I over-filled or under-filled?

    • @49ccscoot
      @49ccscoot  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Istrtg If it's coming out of the gear oil fill hole, it's overfilled. Let it run out till it's done then replace the filler. Other option would be drain the oil and refill.

      Most can use regular in stock form. Premium becomes necessary in many cases once you start modifying them... ignition advance, increased compression...

    • @49ccscoot

      Enviromoto had them. They're made by Prima and the GY6 125/150 and 139QMB both use the same ones, so searching for those should bring something up if Enviromoto doesn't have them anymore.

    What about the tiny ball bearing when you remove the spring? Do you lose inside?

    • @49ccscoot
      @49ccscoot  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Alexandria Summers There shoudl be no ball bearing falling out of these. Some guy that has no clue what he's doing and is trying to sell parts has videos about ruining the engine when you lose this. I've never seen it in the 139QMB. Feel free to look up parts diagrams if you don't believe me and find this thing. This video was the first time that plug was ever removed on this scooter and you can see no bearing falling out. Not shown is the oil, but I did post pics of the oil on my site. I was not looking for this ball bearing, rather inspecting the oil that came in there, but there's no BB in the oil either that you didn't see in the vid. Some engines do have a plug that is actually a cam chain tensioner and have a ball bearing above a spring. My old pitbike engines had those and the ball bearing was large, hard to miss it. The 139QMB does not.

    • @49ccscoot
      @49ccscoot  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Different mounts. They can certainly be made to fit, but it would take some fabrication skills. There used to be a pre-made stretch 150 swap kit out there, but it was hundreds of dollars just for the mount setup. At that point, you might as well just buy another scooter.

    Whats the best oil to use and gas for a 50cc scooter ? Btw how do i drain the has out of my 50cc im using 87 and wont start..

    • @49ccscoot
      @49ccscoot  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not sure what the absolute best is but you can see what I use in the vid and synthetic oil is good if you want to spend the extra money. 87 works fine for many scooters, some will need premium.
      You can slowly drain the fuel by opening the valve that's usually attached to a hose coming from the float bowl drain. You could just remove a fuel line to drain. If it has a vacuum petcock, you'll need to remove a hose on the tank side so it drains. If it has a petcock on the tank you'll need to either apply a vacuum so it opens or take the petcock off.

      Inchyladas IMO a BBK is one of the best mods for a 49cc. Sometimes gearing limits speed, but there should be a considerable amount more power. A gear swap could be performed later if necessary. Worth the money.

  • @49ccscoot

    after doing this, my moped stopped working, can you please tell me why!? it wont even start now, it ran just ok after 7000 miles, then i tried changing the gear oil, (i had already changed the engine oil not too long ago), and when i did, it ran a bit better for about 10 minutes or so, then kept making a weird noise, then dying out... then eventually just stopped starting!

    • @49ccscoot
      @49ccscoot  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      You waited 7,000 miles to do an oil change or this was just the most recent? Have you got spark? Does it have compression? Getting fuel?

    • @Catseye31605
      @Catseye31605 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      I waited 7,000 miles because I never knew there was a difference between gear oil and engine oil. I thought just changing the spark plugs and the engine oil was the only maintenance I needed to do. Then I saw this video and saw otherwise. Its getting spark, it sounds like the gears are getting hung up

    • @49ccscoot
      @49ccscoot  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Is the gearbox seized up now? If the CVT is all working properly even if it were, it shouldn't stop you from starting though. If the gearbox is in rough shape that needs to be attended to regardless.

    Thanks for the video. I was wondering if you (90GTVert) or anyone knows about the dipstick and the amount of oil used in changing the oil. Using only 700ml, I'm already at the top (or just a little over) of the xxxx marks on the dipstick
    (with the scooter on the stand and the front wheel touching floor, but with back tire touching the floor, the oil would be WAY over the xxxx marks),
    and I've been told as long as I'm within the xxxx marks I should be okay. My owner's manual says 0.9 liter (900ml) for changing the oil, so go figure. It seems crazy hard to get the right information. Thanks to anyone who can help.
    Also I have a problem with the brake light staying on all the time, I'm going to try and open it up and make sure that is what is happening, but I think it is, because the light doesn't get brighter when I use either brake and it already looks pretty bright.

    • @49ccscoot
      @49ccscoot  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You should be fine within the XXXXX marks. I try to keep the scooter as
      level as possible when checking. On the centerstand is how I do it to be
      consistent.
      The light could be wired wrong. It's not inconceivable with Chinese scooters. Perhaps the brake filament is getting full time power instead of the tail filament. Could be that your switches aren't working or one is always on. Could be no power to the switches. A multimeter or at least a test light would be handy to have right now.

      It might work, but I'd be afraid the magnetic could decide to attach to a moving part with my luck. I wouldn't do that unless you find a way to secure it, but I may just be paranoid.

    How much did you spend on parts for the whole series?

    • @49ccscoot
      @49ccscoot  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't know exactly, but rough estimates below just for a ballpark. Some of it is probably a little high, some you could spend more on depending exactly what you get.
      Metal Valve Stems : $10
      Blade Fuse Holder & Fuses : $5
      Fuel Hoses : $10
      Manual Fuel Shutoff : $5
      Fuel Filter : $5
      Hose Clamps : $5
      Fasteners & Washers : $10
      Spark Plug : $5
      Plug Cap : $5
      Magnetic Drain Plug Kit : $15
      -------------------------------------------
      Rough Parts Estimate : $75
      I really think you could get some of that for less. Then things like thread locker, silicone, dielectric grease, and oils add up another $25 probably. Again, depends exactly what you get and some of it you'd likely have leftovers. For example a quart of gear oil will cover about 8 gear oil changes.

      jeffrey boulden Oil or gear oil change intervals are things that you just won't find a solid number on. Can depend on the oil, the use, the environment, etc... For these engines with a typical non-synthetic engine oil I prefer to change it out every 500 miles, some do 1000. I would not push over 1000 miles for engine oil without using synthetic in these engines... even then I'd prefer to change synthetic every 1000 miles. Gear oil may be fine for 5000 miles, but definitely use synthetic if you wait that long. I use synthetic in mine and change it at about 2,000 miles as a max. A container of gear oil should give you about 8 changes so it's not expensive and it doesn't take long.
