Dr Taylor, last weekend I was volunteering with a woman whom I had never met. I caught the tail end of her conversation with another woman in which she said "and that's ANOTHER thing that no one tells you is going to happen at menopause!" Once, she was alone I went up to her and said words to the effect "my friend, I was once like you. But let me tell you about this doctor I found on TH-cam. Her name is Dr. Barbara Taylor...."
It felt so good to be able to play it forward :)

      Suzy,
Thank you so much for helping another woman. While you may not see it as such, you may have saved that woman's life. That's what this education is all about.
Thank you, thank you for caring enough to share this education with her. My dream is for all women to get this education in their 20s and 30s. You are a star.

Wow! This one blows my mind too. I watched this one twice. I thought the z test in the previous video frustrated me and didnt make sense.
This tool FRAX has so many stipulations, rules, factors, etc in order to have it done. This is all so crazy to me. Lol.
I see comments here and it is sad to me that there are so many doctors, even menopausal specialists, unwilling to work with women and give them what they ask for. It seems they make you do it their way or it's the highway!
Our education you are providing seems to not matter to them.
We are blessed to have this education and know differently. We know what we would like based on your teachings and still we do not receive our menopause our way. Seems discouraging.
I have not had a bone density test because inwas told when I was 50 that I didnt need one until 65 because I did not show any risk factors and because I am in good health, active, lift weights, do yoga, etc.
I look forward to making a better decision for myself after this unit is complete.

Thank you for this important video, Dr Taylor! I have a question about thyroid disease and thyroid medication being listed as risk factors for osteoporosis. Does this mean even hypothyroidism, for instance, that is being successfully treated with thyroid hormone medication is still a risk factor? Or do you mean untreated thyroid diseases? And why are the thyroid medications themselves a risk factor?
I’m reminded of what you said elsewhere ~ the more we learn, the more questions we have! 😊 It’s definitely true for me!
    Best wishes! 🌸

      Judy,
You are so kind. Thank you.
I will get around to doing another video about me one of these days. Actually, I've only done one Q&A about myself ... because my staff made me.
I think of this channel as being all about YOU, not me.
But, you should know that I do incorporate my exercise routines into the education. In this osteoporosis unit, there will be 3 videos of me in the gym showing you exercises that are good for preventing falls, improving your balance, & increasing bone density. And there will be many others in various units. I sprinkle them throughout rather than grouping them.

I may have to have my doc revisit my DEXA with me right next to her. So scary when you do not know about risk factors and docs misreading...even the T score.
I have lowered my risk even more by drinking less than 16 ounces of caffeine, no alcohol and so much more.
Thankfully, I am learning more and more....just right.
See you at our upcoming consultation! XO~Maria

Hello Dr Taylor, I’ve been watching your videos since the beginning. I went on HRT 2 years ago at age 57. We recently moved to a new area and I researched (exhaustingly!) a Dr on menopause.org. At my visit, she told me she won’t prescribe me HRT after I turn 60, next year. After I gave her my reasons for choosing to be on HRT, she said testing shows it’s a 50/50 gamble, but she doesn’t believe in it, so she won’t prescribe it, and I’ll have to find another Dr. So she says it’s 50/50 yet she won’t work with me as a team, to determine MY health decisions. It’s her way in the highway. I’m actually shocked a young female Dr is so closed minded and uneducated, and listed on menopause.org. 👎👎👎 I won’t be returning!

      Carolyn,
Schedule a consultation with me and I will help you navigate the medical profession and get what you want. All you have to do is go to MenopauseTaylor.ME.
This is precisely the kind of thing for which I do one-on-one consultations. You definitely need one. No two women are alike, and addressing your situation requires tailoring all the facts specifically to YOU.
      Here's how a consultation works:
      1) You would schedule a one-on-one consultation at my website, MenopauseTaylor.ME, choosing a time that is convenient for you. I do consultations on Skype, FaceTime. Facebook Messenger, What’s App, and the phone. (But very shortly, I’ll have my own video platform embedded in my website.)

      2) I would send you an email to confirm that you are scheduled for the stated time, and invite you to send me as much information about yourself as you please. You can make it brimming with details and tell me about your reproductive life, any gynecologic problems you've had, your symptoms of peri-menopause, and your symptoms of post-menopause. You can include all your fears, concerns, and goals for your menopause management. You may also send me any labs, mammogram results, bone density results, etc. that you would like me to include in designing your protocol. If you want to adhere to a certain category of management options (herbs or diet & lifestyle, or whatever), you should tell me that. I will give you a 5-day deadline for sending all materials, and will not accept anything after that date.
      3) I'll get busy creating a document that gives you all the education you need to understand absolutely everything, points out the pros and cons of each option, and tailors it all to YOU, using the information you have provided. The document will be loooooong. Most are over 30 pages.
      4) I will send you the document by email 72 hours before your consultation. You will benefit greatly by reading it in advance. Light bulbs will go off like crazy, and if you're like most women, you'll feel that you've already gotten your money's worth.
      5) During your consultation, we will review the document and address any issues you want in order to fine tune everything and determine your best options. I'll tell you exactly how to find the right kind of professional, how to have the conversation in order to get what you want, and the nuances of things like guidelines and insurance. I leave nothing unaddressed.
      6) You will go to a professional of your choosing in order to get the actual hormones or whatever you choose to use.
      7) After the first consultation, I'll hold your hand (forever if you want me to). In other words, you'll be able to schedule mini-consultations (30-minute, in addition to full consultations) whenever you need to. I'll keep records of your situation. Most women schedule mini-consultation whenever they go to the doctor and don't understand what he or she said, or why. I translate. I make sense of everything. Most schedule mini-consultation whenever they have a new test and they want me to explain the results. And all schedule mini-consultation whenever their situation changes and they need to re-weigh and re-balance their options.
The time you spend with me will make everything about working with any other professional so easy. And they will love the fact that you have an actual education rather than a bunch of misconceptions that you got from the Internet. If your initial hormone regimen is not right, you'll want to consult with me before going to your doctor. I can prepare you for what to expect and what to request.
So, that's my role. And nobody else on earth does this kind of thing but me. So, I hope you schedule a consultation and let me hold your hand (figuratively).
I hope to meet you soon!

@@carolyn3441 Yes. One of the keys to your menopause management is learning how to navigate the industries involved. That's something I cover in detail in every consultation. There are more pitfalls than you could possibly imagine. Even with this education, you could burn your bridges. That's why I suggested a consultation. Just know that I'll be here if you ever need me.

Wow, Dr. B, I watched this video a second time, after the consult with you where I understood I wanted to start on HRT to stop my bone loss (my T score is -2.3), and start bisphosphonates to build up the bone I've already lost. I saw a gynecologist who helps manage menopause, and i got started on HRT. I told her I asked my family physician for bisphosphonates, and he told me I'd need to see an endocrinologist. She concurred. I saw the endocrinologist, and despite being armed with info from your videos...he doesn't want to give me the prescription. I asked him what's the down side? I want to prevent a fracture. He said theres a 5-10 year limit on these meds, and he thinks im too young to start on them (54). I asked why there would be a limit, because of risk of femor fracture and ONJ? When he said yes, I answered that the risk was very small. He didnt agree. He claims breaking a bone is also a factor of age, and i am young, he also said there may be a downside of taking HRT and bisphosphonates together, that we dont have enough info to know. He claimed that HRT alone may improve my bone density, he'd want to wait a year or two to repeat the DEXA and see. When i argued each point with him, he said he would send me for an xray of my spine to see if I've lost height in my spine. If i have, then and only then would a bisphosphonate be indicated in my case. I don't really understand the whole argument with him. It sounds like he doesn't trust the DEXA alone to show that I am at high risk for fracture.

As I taught you in your consultation: Your menopause management should never be a battle between you managing YOUR menopause YOUR way and someone else coercing you to manage YOUR menopause THEIR way.

Lainrich, this is funny because I had a Rheumatologist tell me to go directly on Fosamax at age 46 because I was on prednisone which cause bone loss. He never mention estrogen/birth control pills. He takes a lot of perks and “donations” from drug reps. There is a web site where we can see this info. Not one doctor ever mentioned estrogen even at menopause.

Thank you Dr Barbie this is so helpful! My hubby watches you too as you know and he has learned alot.
My new menopause specialist is very impressed with his knowledge. But my hubby boss is a woman my page who looks at least 10 years older has had a fracture and sweats in meetings and sweats all over the place suddenly when it is cold. He suggested she watch you and take HRT it didn't go over too well. LOL! He just got tired of her leaning over his shoulder and sweat dripping onto him. She doesn't have many of the risk factors for osteoporosis and I don't know if she has it. But she did have a fracture a minor one.'
She is overweight and Jewish. But I think HRT would help her in general. I have heard her on zoom calls when he was working from home. I feel so bad he has to deal with that and it is unnecessary. If she got HRT she would be calmer I think. She is always hysterical.
    Enough about her!
I only got approved treatment because I had a fracture first and it was very severe.
BTW just for anyone reading this I was in love with my Climara patch, and it helped everything but the last 6 months or more I had to change it like 3 or 4 times a week which contributed to me getting a fibroid and thick uterus. I just started using the Minivelle patch it is working better for me. Climara is now made over seas and is made of less quality hormones now maybe generic. Even though it is brand. The Minivelle is of higher quality. Climara was at one time but changed .
Anyway thank you for this education!

Can people as in women or even men get osteoporosis, before peri menopause time of their life. Is this possible? If so it is so hard to get a dexa scan before then as all the doctors say it will be rejected unless you are in peri... even if you have a thyroid problem.

It irritates me when money is the key factor in preventing or treating potentially harmful problems like Osteoporosis. Money should never be based on how much it will cost! What matters is catching the disease before MORE money will be paid by insurance to treat a disease that could have been caught early and treated early.
Mammograms for younger women is another example. Had a woman at work not had breast cancer and then a double mastectomy her daughter never would have had a mammogram and the start of a small tumor found. She was only 35 years old
