    Thanks for posting🙏🏻 Sweet Talking Spoon Song is absolutely brilliant! Phil with long hair 🤩😍🤪

    I only recently started watching videos of their early Phil Judd music. Fantastic. The boys were so tight from day one and playing such complex arrangements with very difficult rhythms and transitions. Every band member worked hard to pull those songs off. And Tim Finn, who later just sang and played guitar, is a fantastic piano player. The band is a once in a lifetime phenomenon we are unlikely to see playing again, but if they do, I’m catching a flight to wherever they are playing.

    Phil Judd and Tim Finn were a force that should have powered on. Big respect for both of those geezers.

      The band was not big enough to hold Phil Tim AND Neil

    • @paulw6057
      @paulw6057 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@NagoyaHouseHead Perhaps not; however, the history of Split Enz is full of missed opportunities. There was something about their very early sound that was never recreated or built upon. I think as a band they seemed to have a lot of cognitive dissonance regarding their image and what their music represented. Were they too arty, not arty enough? Hence the rerecording of several of their early songs. IMO, the Beginning of the Enz songs were rerecorded to lesser effect whilst the Mental Notes songs were improved upon - the politically incorrect term would be schizophrenic. The second missed opportunity was the period immediately before 'Fenzy'; John Leckie wanted to work with them, apparently, and they had heaps of quality demos they could have built from. I don't know what happened with that. 'True Colours' kind of came too late in a way and the Beatles comparisons were unfair.

    • @NagoyaHouseHead
      @NagoyaHouseHead 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@paulw6057 Penetrating analysis my man. Agree on all points. Yes I think there was a huge amount of tension in the band from start to finish really. The early work was a really quite unprecedented exploration of schizophrenia via Judd's input. Hard to break a kiwi band in the 70's and they deserved much more. It all came together on True Colors, big shiny pop songs and commercial success. But by then I think they all knew that despite the breakthrough album they were simply not gonna make it over the long haul. Ironic that Tim jumped first, thinking he could do better solo. And Neil helming the ship on See Ya Round was poignant when he sang I Walk Away From You.

      only one channel back then haha........I remember my older brothers
      being impressed with them and saying they should win
      and being pretty disappointed when they didn't......I saw them a couple
      of years later peering through the Venetian blinds at a pub in
      town.....I was impressed.....then saw them next at the first Sweetwater
      festival at Ngaruawahia in 1980.....they had been away overseas for a
      few years......Elvis Costello was top bill but IMO these guy's stole the
      show....when they did "I see red" the crowd just went mad...

      I saw them in their first gig in Aus and they were booed off the stage by bikers calling for Billy Thorpe (1976). I was 1 of 20 dancing and loved it. Met them back stage too. Blacktown was a cultural desert and Split Enz certainly made an impression.

    Big love for gen-1 Split Enz and their initial period of devil-may-care determination to break out and get noticed in quiet little early-70s Kiwiland. But really, they didn't stand a chance until the next big revamp when Neil came on board and they stopped playing silly cabaret clown shows and got serious. Frenzy was the breakthrough album and of course True Colours was T H E B I G B R E A K !
