These guys were SO ahead of the curve. For the mid-70s, this is a thing of its own. Not quite glam, not quite punk, not quite prog, but somehow elements of all and more. Such a great band that I have been lucky enough to have discovered as a younger lad growing up as a teen in the 2000s/2010's thanks to the advent of streaming/TH-cam.
It's most akin in at least the visual fashion to have taken a cue from Peter Gabriel's Genesis costuming and theatrics. Your description of the music, though, is very apt. A bit of glam, punk, and near-prog, plus the future addition of New Wave Pop in the mix have made them the one perennial fave I have out of all the oldy, moldy classics. When you've never got it off on that revolution stuff, and even TV is at times more filling than T. Rex, when Led Zeppelin goes down like a leaded baloon and The Who leaves you asking "Why?" This is the space, the place, that Split Enz fills in my life.
Great seeing the original line-up I used to watch live back in the day in Wellington & Auckland again . . . yet another Enz song that absolutely stands the test of time!
It's not just how amazing the song is to me, it's also brings back what a fantastic and still pretty innocent place NZ was in the 1970's...people were very different back.
i fucking love this!!!! heard it when i was in hospital a while back when shit was looking grim. it didnt seem so bad when i heard this, play it every day.
God these guys were so fabulously eccentric, they never get enough credit for how innovative and out there they were. I guess the later pop era has obscured the Phil Judd years for alot of listeners.
My first exposure was "I Got You" courtesy of Mtv. It wasn't until several decades later in my life, when I became restless as I do, and bored with what I'm hearing, that I got to exploring, and discovered the Phill Judd era. And I do believe that this video was the thing that put me over the fence. Imagine a tour featuring this era Split Enz, with Cardiacs, possibly Henry Cow or something on the bill.
do you know WHY he REALLY punched Tim? Tim was on acid and Phil had one of his freezes on stage during "Nightmare Stampede" to a crowd of 2 people in Atlanta. Backstage, Tim started jabbing Phil in the chest repeatedly for fucking up and Phil clocked him..
@@playitstrange129 I guess the grind of touring the US got to them. I am always amazed they managed to pull off an album as strong as Dizrhythmia despite half the classic Second Thoughts lineup being gone! Another Great Divide was one hell of a swansong though.
I Remember Hearing This Band Split Endz. For the first time. Sitting in a, Friends' Car. What A Crazy Cool Band. Amazing Songs Magical Times. XXX ice-maiden
this song, along with "Late last night" were the standouts on "Second Thoughts". it's a pity the second album was half made up of re-recordings of earlier songs. Split Enz became a lot more boring after Phil, Chunn & Crowther left.
Coldacre I think the second thoughts album was half of re-recordings instead. Mental Notes was released in 1975, a year before Second Thoughts and featured superior versions of songs imo
Thought the second version better , stronger album. Pity about Phil Judd stuff left out / but yeah better album. Frenzy bit underrated sounds like crowded house on acid !-xxx
in the end they had to pay the rent & eat... They left the UK owing (Start Hire PA company, they used on tour) money, and reality bites. But yes, artistically this Enz is best Enz. Though some good stuff came after and the rest is history... repeatedly
Said it before... time to rework some of the old tunes with the maturity of years and let them see the light of day, Time for a Kiwi tour , if it's good enough for Midnight Oil in 2022 its good enough to drag out these old tunes and polish them up. I'll be lining up for a ticket for sure, Climb over that old shit give Eddie and Mike C a call and put something together before it's lost forever. Kris
Two observations: The framing left out the keyboard player. Here's a perfect example of how, for some reason, the drummer of every band always looks the most normal (but usually is the freakiest.)

They are so compelling!
I couldn't love this song more if I tried. If I could only listen to 1 Split Enz song for the rest of my life this would be it.
That's a pretty bloody good song, I can't stop listening to it. Might have to give it another whirl.
ONE OF TOP 10 ALBUMS OF 70s.. Its that brilliant.
The best enz song of all of them. Phil judd is a genius
They were way ahead of their time! The U.S.A didn't see these hair and clothing trend styles until the mid 80's! LOL! Thank You Split Enz!
The US didn't see them coming OR have a sense of Humour! This is Brillo Mr Phudd! Cracks me up every time I see the toupee get whisked away! hahahah
These weren't a trend or style. I mean, who else did this?? Did even NZ see this before the Enz appeared?
this song is utterly magnificent. it blows me away every time I hear it.
Great seeing the original line-up I used to watch live back in the day in Wellington & Auckland again . . . yet another Enz song that absolutely stands the test of time!
It’s 2020, and this sounds EPIC.
Thank you, for this incredible music!!
It's not just how amazing the song is to me, it's also brings back what a fantastic and still pretty innocent place NZ was in the 1970's...people were very different back.
Musically, perhaps THE best Enz song.
YESSS
It's up there
i fucking love this!!!! heard it when i was in hospital a while back when shit was looking grim. it didnt seem so bad when i heard this, play it every day.
Wow - I thought I knew the whole Enz anthology. This is a stunning hidden gem!
Next-level songwriting.
This is definitely my favorite pre Neil Finn era Split Enz song.
Great job, Phil!
This still sounds ahead of its time in 2020!

Well, I had a best of compilation and couldn't listen to the Judd-era stuff for some time before I finally "got" it.
@@80sandretrogubbins25 Sometimes the most worthy music takes a bit more effort than most.
THE PERFECT ENZ LINE UP with an absolutleee classic sound/look/tune...maybe their ZENETH. Judd sings it within the top too! Bravo Chaps.
This is why I scratched 'Split Enz' into my desk in 1977.
Hahaha. I scratched XTC. Right on.
THIS is the real split enz and the best split enz.
Love these videos. Pieces of art.
my life in a nutshell love Phil Judd
I can not stop listening to this
Keep listening, Teeba ... it just gets better and better as the years go by!
The neurodivergence of this song is incredibly apparent. This is to its credit.
Awesome track & great clip. One of my all time favourites.
There's at least 5 great verses in the 1 song. Fantastic
brilliant, just brilliant.
im hoping one day there will be a split ends tv movie they have a book and its awesome ... stranger than fiction ........
Beautiful.
Awesome track.
unbelievable, i don't care if you punched tim, this is great

@@playitstrange129 Ouch! Both had issues then... lol. I hope that's changed!
@@1970brenz it was close in 2013, but old wounds,, same old story,,,,

I kind of get the idea that Billy Corgan was a big Split Enzyme fan.
We love you Phil ❤❤❤❤❤

@@BloggStandardI tell myself, before I go to sleep.......
this disappearing wig?
And they thought Lorde was weird. The no money back guarantee of zero recognition in the States is to have Noel Crombie in the band.
Was this before Neil Finn joined the band?
Yes. Neil joined in 1977 after Phil was sacked.
Phil Judd rules. (i scrawled on a lamp post today). sweet creams
where'd you do this?
Masterfully fronted Phil. Some of the others looked a bit lethargic here. Do more like this.
Dizrythmia ?

And imagine if they'd had dancing lessons?? Would be even more of a feat...
I think the bit with the leotards and the smoke machines *was* the dance lesson...
I keep dacing.
crowded house covered this on a bootleg called "nick's bday". strange choice.
Strange but true ... stranger than fiction, perhaps?
Crowded House was early Split Enz. Same ppl. That's why.
Try as I do
I can never get through
I only got as far
As the back seat of my car
obvious genesis influence here
This looks as great as it sounds!
