If you ever feel like doing a similar blade, can I suggest placing bearing between the washers also? And for all of the people that don't like your voice over... screw em' I like the explanation of your process.
That pattern is awesome it looks like eyes and teeth I liked that you made your billet oversized then didn't stress about the cracking I think that would have made me start over lol good job and great finished piece
morning JP. i dont know anyone who doesnt get the fish lips when forging in a tip. have you noticed simple patterns like this one, people either love them completely or become trolls and cant say nothing nice. i will be honest, even though i have been making knives for awhile now. i still use a grinding jig on my grinder so i hardly ever make divots. if i needed a knife i would buy one. your work is phenomenal and well more advanced than i did at your age
Yea but i think thats it in anything anyone publicly makes. Either its well recieved or they complain "thats not true damascus, true damascus has been lost to time". They will find something to complain to if they are trolls. I also need a jig. What jig do you use?
Those cracks had me worried, glad you were able to get them out and finish out a great looking knife. I dig the handle material tbh, I like the pattern it has.
Like the way this came out. Would love to see you get to the point where you can be self supporting with income from your blades and youtube channels, even if you choose to continue working outside those pursuits.
Not damascus. AEB-L Stainless steel. I hope to be able to make damascus knives in the 300 to 400 range in the future but right now thats not really doable. Once i get a power hammer though 🙄
Morning, Absolutely Amazing ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️, and yes now you got me thinking of how to save money for a one of a kind Knife. I cook a lot of Texas BBQ for Church and Friends and hope one day to start a business. Thank you for your videos. They are amazing. Keep them coming.
Killer piece mate! I love the micarta handle too. Your work is really coming along in leaps and bounds. Don't stress about fish mouths either. It's gonna happen. You already know how to get past it. Love your blades.
Okay, a couple of tips... 1.) When Forging the tip to avoid a fish mouth at the tip, basically cut the tip at an angle (Spine to Edge) then forge the tip to shape 2.) to avoid getting that divot, just take your time grinding and make sure you're completely flat against he platen
Definitely get a small wheel attachment and seriously consider a rotary platen as well. Both will make life much nicer. Good work, I wasn’t sold on the pattern at first but after grinding the bevels in it has a much cooler look.
I hang the tip over the edge of the anvil and it works well for me. I think I've had a couple but I always hit the tip back towards the tongs when it starts.
If you make some knives with a few Crusader Crosses and some with Jerusalem Crosses, I'd buy them. And yes, in the blade Damascus style . Perhaps experiments with copper and bronze for red hues. Handles inlaid with Ringwoodite (rich vibrant and royal blues)
Nice looking knife! I think I would like to have seen more of the pattern and less of the core steel, but I understand that's not always possible. As far as the micarta scales, I like the look and I feel like sometimes other bladesmiths will create knives that are too beautiful to use. Keep up the good work!
I love wenge. Sad I didn't get to see that handle, but I love blue and micarta is nice so it's a win either way. Dunno if I'd buy the chef's knife, but I am on the lookout for a nice brisket knife though.
Thanks i like wenge as well but its some really tough material and i didnt have the time to make a trip for a knew blade to cut it with unfortunately. I bet those briskets are hiding in fear knowing your looking for a brisket knife 😅
If you aren't a blacksmith and only grinding a peace of steel, I would understand using micarta. But putting so much effort, energy, and skills in forging such a beautiful blade and finishing it with a micarta handle is a crime against yourself!
I think your knives will sell on your site if not I’m sure by now word of mouth has it on the streets that you make awesome knives and can still sell them that way as we’re exiting 2024 I truly hope that 2025 will be prosperous and healthy for you and your family
Thank you. I appreciate it. I havent sold much online and what i put there is more pricey because it is damascus that takes a lot of time to make. I wpuld eventually like to make and sell entry $200 high quality knives for people who have never had a good knife. A good knife is life changing.
В этом пакете можно было проложить шарики не только внутри шайб, но и в промежутках между ними. А также можете сделать дамаск из обрезков от своих заготовок.
@@JPsBladeworks Like.. Grab some metal off a old chevy, then use the car to inspire the knife design.. Gotta film you at the junkyard and coming up with the design. That would be a dope ass video..
Not a metal worker, but I notice that when some makers use those rounded kiss blocks, they’ll run down the length of the place at a 45 degree angle in one direction, then cross that the other way. This orients internal grain so that it is harder to crack the blade. Is that true?
Christmas knives would be a Damascus/layered pattern blade? I'd be interested (I actually think you might be setting your price too low, but the market can help decide)
I've never forged anything B4 but I love watching people who do I recently saw a video were a guy forged a knife and he made American flags all thru the blade I guess it would be called an American flag Damascus have you seen any one do that B4 I lost the video is that a pattern that you could try

Thanks. You're the second person to suggest that. It sounds interesting.
Lovely pattern. Your absolutely developing as an excellent smith. Do not stop posting!
Thanks i appreciate it
The final pattern is great, I love that you ground out so much because it looks like a cityscape
Thanks i love the look of the sanmai knives.
I just about jumped out of my shoes a second ago,! I said "oh Jp has another video! Cool!. I love it
Glad you enjoy my videos

Thanks

I dont stress but enough heat and love and they weld back together.
Beautiful knife!! and you did a wonderful job making it as well!!!!
I enjoyed your video so I gave it a Thumbs Up

What's up, bro?!!! That's what I'm talking about. I wish to see some customs knife 🔪
I got more in the works 💪
Amazing job,and great commentary.

Absolutely beautiful knife. I love the pattern and the micarta handles are perfect for it. Great job as always.
Thank you

200.00/250.00 for a great handmade Damascus chef knife! Yessir!

I think the layered washers lefts a cool cracked look when ground down.
Great looking knife

That was a nice knife you make and the pattern is nice
Like also when you explain how you do things

Another lovely knife, great handle..👍👍👍
Thank you
You should play around with some of the CSGO Knives, would attract a whole new audience. M9 Bayonet, Karambit etc...
Id have to look into them. I never played csgo but it would be fun to do that
Looks great
Thanks!
I was randomly thinking of ball bearings and washers the other day. LOL. I don't even do this. I just watch yall on TH-cam and thought about it.
TH-cam be reading your mind

That's a nice pattern

I would like to see that pattern with the ball bearings down the middle on the outside of the washers. That would give kind of a star pattern.
That would look cool too
Great vid 👌
Thanks
i prefer not to use white out as the shell can helps prevent warping at cost of more grinding time and a few test dips in acid to see if all is gone
Everyone does things differently. I prefer a clean release. I personally hate having to grind and dip the knife to get all the mild steel out.
Very cool knife!!! I would love to have a chef’s knife if you make some. 😁
Nice knife
Thanks
Much love bro bro
Thank you
Lovely knife/work. There is a rumour that fish lips happen more when there are no steel toe caps worn. But it just a rumour. :)
That makes very much sense 🤔

Nah i like the micarta and its waterproof so it works well with a kitchen knife so i dont regret my choices.

Ever tried using an oscillating saw or similar to shake the powder down in the nooks and crannies?
No but i do have one here. I just always used a hammer or a stick of some sort with no issues.

If i make it bigger, I could probably do that in the gaps.
Yes, I would be interested in purchasing a butcher knife from you....
What kind of material?
The pattern looks like the washers are dripping towards the edge, like those crazy Salvador Dali paintings...
I dont knownwhat that is but ill look it up
My brain hurts. Those paintings are mesmerizing
I would buy one!!
Thanks i appreciate the feedback
I was thinking.. you should use some metal off a car at the junkyard, then make the knife design based on the car..
How so? I need more explanation i cant see it in my head yet.

@JPsBladeworks ya I wonder how it would look
Have you ever made a knife used for shaving? I think trying to make one out of a few packs of bobby pins?
What if i made a shaving knife from shaving blades 🤔
Ever think of making the canister part of the billet ?
Ha! I thought fish lips were a feature! Yeah, I get them all the time.
Christmas knives would be a Damascus/layered pattern blade? I'd be interested (I actually think you might be setting your price too low, but the market can help decide)
No. In the video i say its AEB-L Stainless. I could make some random damascus ones but they would be pricier
Since it is decorative, try using stainless balls.
That sounds interesting
Would love to see some hollow going on your knives
Some hollow?
Out of curiosity, with a pattern like this, why not cut the tip in with the grinder/saw instead of forging it in?
Curiosity to see what it looks like forged.
I personally have spent too much money on knives and stones recently so unfortunately I wouldn't be buying a drop
Thanks. I appreciate the feedback.
Is that just normal spray paint that you coated the can in?
Yes. But it has to be white spray paint. I'm told others work, but i only use white since it's what works for me.
Just needs to contain titanium dioxide.
