    I enjoy the information you're giving. I'm still learning how to even get started forging, so all the information helps a ton. It looks like I need more tools and an actual anvil. Beautiful blade BTW love the design and the handle

    • @JPsBladeworks
      @JPsBladeworks  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      All you need is a heat source, a hammer, and something to hammer on. You could get away with a chunk of steel as long as you can secure it to something to keep it from moving around. The heavier the better. Many other countries take a solid round and put it in cement and forge on that. People are recourceful.

      I am teaching myself as you are and looking for tools for this craft, I've been a mechanic by trade for 33 years. So far, I totally suck at this trade because I don't have a furnace or a steam hammer or whatever those things are.

    • @USMCShores
      @USMCShores 29 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      @JPsBladeworks
      Ok cool thank you!! I have a chunk of I beam with 2x4s strapped to it I just need a way of securing it. I have slowly gotten my hammer collecting together. I just need plyers I bought my forge two burner propane box. So I'm excited to get started. I've collected a ton of random steel too. Couple broken files, coil springs from vehicles I've worked on, a chain from my trucks transfer case too to try. And many more steel items.

    • @USMCShores
      @USMCShores 29 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      @Viktory2k1
      Not gonna lie. My fear of not being good at it is what has kept me from doing it all together. I've been a mechanic for as long as I can remember (19 years old in the Marines 35 now). I've collected steel from all my jobs from mechanic to mining to now wind energy technician. I just need to start. I can't afford a power hammer or anything fancy for heating. I bought a cheap two burner forge off eBay and an "anvil" off Etsy it's an I beam with 2x4s strapped to it. I live in an apartment with no garage so I have to go to a parents' house to do anything. But I've set myself a goal this year at least one blade by the end of the year.

      @@USMCShores Oh wow, I am also a mechanic but became disabled years backand still trying to get on SSDI but yeah, I worked primarily on trash hauling equipment for nearly 35 years but havent worked at all for a while now but side jobs here and there, can't handle much super heavy work. Yeah, I can't imaggine the price of that equipment like the oven, what do they use for fuel? sometimes I see wood laying around in some videos and some have propane or some kind of gas. Just looks like a lot to make knives as a hobby but its so intriguing that I want to start doing it. Make the box, put a bunch of small crap steel stuff like nuts, old stripped bolts, washers, stuff like that. Weld the lid on once packed and then go to town forging it down folding it a bunch of times in to a beautiful 10" santoku style knife with the sharp angle towards the tip. Oh man, sign me up!

    I enjoy your voiceovers, explaining what your are doing and why. It's a learning experience. I always wondered about the dowel fit up. Your voice sounds very similar to a fellow that does cooking shorts out of his house. He's an awesome home cook, and your great at these knives.

    JP, lovely work. As far as the yapping, yap away! It's a learning experience and let's us know what is going on. Also, the variance of pattern is actually awesome, with the other steel you used for the center coming through gives it flavor as Damascus is not always the same on each side unless you used flat steel. It's a beautiful piece and you should be proud of it!

      @JPsBladeworks  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks. I'm always proud of my work though I must admit I am very critical of my work. The last thing I want is a customer receiving the knife and thinking it isnt what they expected in quality. Ive seen all kinds of knives from different makers. None are perfect but the flaws i see in mine shine bright to me because i did them 🤣

    Legit, part of the benefit of the internet is being able to connect with other human beings across vast distance, en masse. It's the voice, the person speaking that makes this kind of video interesting. It's the *human* element, not a pair of disembodied hands doing a task.

    It seems like everytime I'm about to catch up on TH-cam videos from the past week that I've been saving until i have the time, I come across one of yours and that those other videos get pushed back until after I'm done watching your work. I really like your videos dude, please keep making them.

You said it yourself there’s plenty of channels that don’t do the voiceover and I watch those too. But I subscribed to your channel because I enjoy the information that you’re providing during the forging process.

    Ditto to all the other comments: your voiceovers are exactly what sets your videos apart from similar bladesmiths. I appreciate you creating the ASMR channel to give a wider range of viewers access to your content, but in my opinion you don't need to tweak anything about your main videos. Keep it up!!
