Thanks for redoing this with the voiceover. You tend to downgrade your skill level, but there's always something to learn from your efforts, especially with the explanations. Thanks!
@brysonalden5414 JP has more skill than most! He's humble. I get that. Really cool stuff coming out of his shop though. I like that he isn't afraid to try new stuff.
You're the only blacksmith that talks through the process that I enjoy watching. The other blacksmiths I watch are all silent, which I typically prefer, but I love the way you talk through it. Excellent video and I love the katana, good luck in the competition.
I always enjoy your videos, JP. Good explanations, no ego, you share your missteps and how you resolve them. Not to mention the beautiful final results. I particularly like the Tsuba on this one. Keep up the great work.
For your first attempt at a samurai sword, You did a pretty decent job. Respect the effort, and the blade looks great. Keep doing what your doing, you will be a great blade smith!
Thank you for doing such a relaxing video. I'm battling livef and kidney disease. The pain from both can be quite excruciating, So rely on various TH-cam channels to take my mind off pain
This is one of my favorite builds. The antique look to the finish is amazing. The colors, the pattern in the blade makes me think of the ocean.❤ Very cool sword!!!

Brother. As a beginner as you claim your seriously ahead of the game, been drooling over your knives making videos, following you now and on X. Love the copper Damascus knives, absolutely beautiful... From Ontario Canada
Hey man great job. My favorite part is the guard. It looks like frog eggs. Super cool. It really accentuates the green oxidation process of the copper pieces. It truly looks like one homogeneous design. Sometimes too much flair on a build looks a little out of place but this all ties together really nicely.
Hi from Australia brother I’ve been watching you for years now and I subscribed to you years ago I don’t comment much on anyone’s channel but I have commented on a few of your videos please keep up your great work and I love your katana it looks amazing
Thank you. I appreciate you taking time and watching my builds. Sometimes it's hard to believe that I have people from all over the world watching me work.
Very nice piece JP! Good luck in the competition but I think you will do well. And yes your honesty is well enjoyed along with the way you explain what your doing
I agree with the comment above, I like it when the smooth is explaining the steps as well as working. Just watching for you released the billet from the canister looked very solid, the best I've seen. One thing I've noticed once you're pressing the billet is that it's either too heavy and that's why it bends.
It can't bend from the weight because it's still pretty sturdy even at high heats. It bends because the press was pressing it uneven and that causes one side to compress more than the other causing a banana shape warp to happen.
That... is absolutely gorgeous. Love the color combo. Craftsmanship was good compared to some, far better than most (I do mean that as a compliment). Have to admit, wish I had your skills and knowledge.
I love the look of this blade. I'm a huge fan of the ammonia patina, I've used it before. Keep up the good work. Multiple video viewer, first time subscriber.
Y!!! E!!! S!!! So much awesomeness!!!!!! I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, I love everything you create!!!! Still waiting for that scythe, brother!!!!!
Gave you a follow. Humbleness is a virtue lacked by many. Was nice watching a young man push forward even as he admits his own need for growth. For those round pieces, I wonder if a lathe or milling machine might come in handy? Love the patterns and mix of colors.
yo i share your vids all the time to my friend and my facebook like to see that your getting better and the end look of the blade is nice and thinking outside the box on the design i dig it
First time viewer and i love the katana, this turned out amazing. I'm trying to get my nerves up to make a forge and try my hand at blacksmithing. This is a gorgeous sword.
Amazing work very nice choices with the design at first when i saw the final copper look i wasn't sure but after putting it all together it really did pop and gave it that wow factor. Well done i would for one buy this particular piece i myself love collecting katanas. ❤
super rad!! i love the pattern. it reminds me of seafoam, which is pretty on point (lol) for a japanese sword! also appreciated the explanation about the spray paint. i dont do any metalwork, but it's interesting to learn about, and no one ive watched has ever mentioned that little tidbit before!
That rusty copper look ended up looking way cooler than I expected. Very nice, very creative. that tsuba could have been thinner but not a big deal if it's more of a show piece. And that cold shut that you saw earlier, the one that made you chop off the tip of your blade, something you could try is filling in the gap by welding it. It's not always the strongest but if done right before the quench, it can be almost just as strong. But anyways, I really liked the end result.
I chose to cut over welding because when I etch the final product it would have a big blemish from the introduction of the welding steel and it wouldn't look good.
Not hating, constructive criticism. I know it creates longer weld seams, but if you try this again, try welding up the 3 long sides and 2 ends, so you can better control the layout of the ball bearings. Then weld on the last long piece.
You are brave to try a katana. Also it fame out looking fantastic, and I love the fittings and leather wrap; I think leather wraps on katanas are the best handle, even if they aren't historically accurate.
Im sure most Japanese people would be happy you think their traditional and often ceremonial sword is cool enough to make your own. With love, from japan
I still recommend doing small rig for sanding where blade is moving and you just hold paper on it. Its pretty simple(motor, few rods, and disc, some wood for clamping). It will really save your hands and arms, and when you already doing lots of heavy work forging, spending those few bucks and day or two to make it that rig is worth in my opinion
I think you're really good. I wish I had a hobbie like this that I liked doing. I guess video games, but that doesn't produce anything useful. Thanks man
As you were oxidizing the copper I was thinking it was going to look like crap... and then the pieces did look like crap... then you sealed in the crap... Then on the finished product it looked beautiful. Great job.
I love this sword, but personally the one thing I would change is the tsuba. It still came out clean but I feel like if you layered it a few times it would look a bit better. Still killed it tho brother
That mega tarnished copper with a clear coat under the black leather was a 200 IQ play, my dude. Absolutely gorgeous, and a look a lot of people would have tried to pull off with a stabilized wood handle. Way to go the extra mile for the voters! Speaking of voters, when are the Apocalypse Challenge videos coming? Or do we not talk about Bruno? 🤣

Very nice! I was wondering, because everyone does it, but what do you do with the end pieces and scrap from all the billets? I thought it'd be cool to take all of them, especially Damascus ones with various patterns, and making one billet of layered or canister Damascus out of them to see what kind of wild pattern you'd end up with.
Thanks for redoing this with the voiceover. You tend to downgrade your skill level, but there's always something to learn from your efforts, especially with the explanations. Thanks!
