Brother. As a beginner as you claim your seriously ahead of the game, been drooling over your knives making videos, following you now and on X. Love the copper Damascus knives, absolutely beautiful... From Ontario Canada
I agree with the comment above, I like it when the smooth is explaining the steps as well as working. Just watching for you released the billet from the canister looked very solid, the best I've seen. One thing I've noticed once you're pressing the billet is that it's either too heavy and that's why it bends.
It can't bend from the weight because it's still pretty sturdy even at high heats. It bends because the press was pressing it uneven and that causes one side to compress more than the other causing a banana shape warp to happen.
I always enjoy your videos, JP. Good explanations, no ego, you share your missteps and how you resolve them. Not to mention the beautiful final results. I particularly like the Tsuba on this one. Keep up the great work.
Y!!! E!!! S!!! So much awesomeness!!!!!! I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, I love everything you create!!!! Still waiting for that scythe, brother!!!!!
Very nice piece JP! Good luck in the competition but I think you will do well. And yes your honesty is well enjoyed along with the way you explain what your doing
That rusty copper look ended up looking way cooler than I expected. Very nice, very creative. that tsuba could have been thinner but not a big deal if it's more of a show piece. And that cold shut that you saw earlier, the one that made you chop off the tip of your blade, something you could try is filling in the gap by welding it. It's not always the strongest but if done right before the quench, it can be almost just as strong. But anyways, I really liked the end result.
I chose to cut over welding because when I etch the final product it would have a big blemish from the introduction of the welding steel and it wouldn't look good.
That... is absolutely gorgeous. Love the color combo. Craftsmanship was good compared to some, far better than most (I do mean that as a compliment). Have to admit, wish I had your skills and knowledge.
I love the look of this blade. I'm a huge fan of the ammonia patina, I've used it before. Keep up the good work. Multiple video viewer, first time subscriber.

If you run into a situation again where you have to cut off material, it might be a neat opportunity to collaborate with another maker who can work smaller materials to make a scaled down version.
You are brave to try a katana. Also it fame out looking fantastic, and I love the fittings and leather wrap; I think leather wraps on katanas are the best handle, even if they aren't historically accurate.
I still recommend doing small rig for sanding where blade is moving and you just hold paper on it. Its pretty simple(motor, few rods, and disc, some wood for clamping). It will really save your hands and arms, and when you already doing lots of heavy work forging, spending those few bucks and day or two to make it that rig is worth in my opinion
One question I had was when you were doing your canister, why no do a canoe style to help you get the even layers you were wanting? Superb work, just a question from a complete layman.
I just didn't consider it at the time. I do lots of canisters and they are always the same. It didn't cross my mind at the time but it does make a lot more sense to do a canoe 😅
Very nice! I was wondering, because everyone does it, but what do you do with the end pieces and scrap from all the billets? I thought it'd be cool to take all of them, especially Damascus ones with various patterns, and making one billet of layered or canister Damascus out of them to see what kind of wild pattern you'd end up with.
23:06 Substituting copper with steel would actually result in a weight reduction. Iron is less dense so you can keep the same dimensions and have a part both lighter and stronger or reduce the dimensions and get the same strength but in a part that’s lighter still.

"don't be a hater in the comments cuz... nobody cares" HOLY BASED
Gotta say it how it is
Did this billet feel very soft when you started pressing? Or does that powder help prevent everything for just turning into molten?
Most are soft with the powder. Once it is consolidated enough the billet becomes pretty hard.
Cool video. Question after you patined the copper if you were to wipe it off what would it look like? It would have left some kind of finish correct? Just curious. I think its hilarious that you get trolls, thats a good sign your getting somewhere on you tube. Thanks for the video
I think the thicker parts where the salt was thicker the finish would wipe off but wherever it was lower it would stay I would assume. 🤔
Cool, but that tsuba is insanely thick. Should be half or less that thickness.
