Thanks for the comment but we have to pay Ted. When he's working on Big Green he's not working on the other cars in his shop which means we pay him for his work. We just can't do that on TH-cam Revenue today so if you want to see more of ted, please join our team and support TFL: www.patreon.com/tflcar

Couple tips for next time you do this:
Set the distributor before you install the engine (you can pull the cap when you put the engine so you don't smash it).
Prime your carb with gas so you don't have to crank the engine waiting for the fuel pump to get gas to the carb.
You can buy an oil pump primer from most parts stores. It is a shaft that goes in the dist hole to the oil pump drive. You attach it to a drill and spin the pump to get oil pressure up before you fire the engine.
The burning smell is most likely paint burning off the headers.
Good job on your first motor swap!

Way to go smallweenielloyd, you don't have to be a mechanic to appreciate having fun with cars & trucks. We all started out by having someone else show us the art of mechanics. Besides it's great fun to watch someone else do the work without having to do a lot yourself, although Andre seems to have an aptitude for doing putzy, delicate work on top of his camera and writing skills.

For the throttle return spring; some guys will get 2 springs, 1 of them a smaller diameter and fit the smaller inside the bigger and use them both. At 16:34 is that a crack in the housing for the electric choke?

Lol. To get the oil pump drive to line up put the distributor gear where it needs to be and just turn the engine over it will fall right in place or get a long flat head screwdriver and turn the pump back a 1/8 of a turn. Either way will work

gezzz just put the damn thing on TDC on compression stroke on #1 , point your rotor button to #1 drop it down bump the engine with hot wire off , the distributor will fall in place . put your cap on then with mark you made 18436572 then put hot wire on . fire it up and get out your timming light 34d at 3500 RPM . drive

  • @gpgstudios9813

That's the thing nobody tells you about with new engines, ALL THE SMELLS lol you think it's about to catch fire lol...ive replaced my 350 with a crate, I tell ya what, you want to learn how to work on engines, get a GM 350...easiest thing to work on, forgiving, parts are everywhere and relatively affordable...mine is TBI, but easier than carb IMO, but I have no experience with a large engine carb...main thing to watch is those oil cooling lines. I blew my crate after 50miles when one blown out and I wasn't watching my gauges like I should've...watch that thing like women watch their weight...good videos guys, love to see the old truck getting some love...cheers

Don Leamon if you just need a good replacement engine look at a L31 crate engine. it's a factory replacement vortec long block from GM. they can be had for around $2000. not a power monster but it's a good base to build on down the road.

Pumping a properly working carb on startup is a very bad idea, you will just flood it. Push it down once to set the choke, then turn it over. And for the love of god, don't rev up a cold started brand new engine.
