    I love Big Green. My grand father had an old square body Chevy like that, only his was brown and fake wood two tone. he taught me how to empty the bed by driving really fast in reverse and slamming on the breaks. we used to use it to haul garbage to the dump. the dump was really just a large mound of dirt that you would drive up on and then empty the trunk in to the metal bins. the local garbage service would come swap the bins about every 3 days or so. one day I was at home and my grandfather shows up and he is walking on foot, he need me to help him get the trunk in stuck. we hop in my dads truck and get to the dump, he had driven fast in reverse and slammed on the breaks to empty the bed, only the master cylinder wasn't working properly and the back half of the truck was hanging over the edge of the bin... it took about three tries but we finally got it out. he was happy and said, don't tell your dad or he will never let me live it down. I kept that secret in till the day he passed away, when I told the story after the funeral, everyone thought it was funny as hell, because they kept telling him one day he would end up driving that trunk in to the garbage bins.

    Big Green has been a fun project. One thing is for sure can't go wrong with a good ole 350! Also love the fact that this truck is a manual.

    As a kid I saw that exact episode of nova. I wanted to cry after seeing the B-29 burn back into the snow after months of it being brought back to life.

    very different segment for TFL to try, there is a lot of potential here... Ted also handled being on camera well (doesn't just work quietly and not talk) which is probably unique for mechanics. nice job branching out guys, this works!

    Direct Manifold Vacuum is the wrong port for the Vacuum Advance. It belongs on the "ported vacuum source" that delivers vacuum, when the throttle is opened. The idle should NOT increases when you connect the hose. Holley Carb's have the correct vacuum port on the base. Most of the time they are on the base at the bottom rear of the base mount.

    • @bgd73
      @bgd73 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      holleys is a blipper.. not a true progressive. Not many shipped with it. Rochester monojet has the only real version. these guys need to lock it out and go with an msd6530 or better...with a map sensor. This helps cold starts, kills back fires, shows on your lap top a vac leak. I can't even believe people still fall for the biggest errors in hot rodding all these years later. I have built more than I choose to remember...and that filter will stop leaking when the oil takes to the engine. Ignition will swamp it soon enough. They can't even get all the HP out of it on this setup.

    • @jakejames5150
      @jakejames5150 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I was just about to comment the same thing, the vacuum advance needs to be connected to "timed vacuum" as edlebrock calls it instead of manifold vacuum. It builds vacuum as airspeed increases through the carburTor rather than engine vacuum

    • @jakejames5150
      @jakejames5150 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    • @derekstewart8175
      @derekstewart8175 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Just depends on how much duration the cam is, run a lot of duration at .050 and use a large plenum single plane intake manifold and it will idle better using manifold vacuum, this isn't the right crate engine for the truck

    12 degrees "initial" timing not static, and yes you're supposed to set it with the vacuum disconnected, and then set the idle speed.

    FYI: The B-29 never took off. They were just doing taxiing tests. And it was a portable generator that was not strapped down in the back that tipped over (kind of like your 305), spilling fuel, which caught fire, burning the beautiful plane to the ground.

    Coulda kept 14+ horsepower if you left off that clutch fan & went electric! Because Engine Masters :)

    • @marufali6205
      @marufali6205 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      that's true but reliability wise the clutch fan is way better because of its continues sucking of hot air from the radiator so way better than and electric a lot of v8 I have work on the clutch fan save it from heat because of continues cycle and it's reliability. but if u want more horsepower electrics fan the way to go

    It's a blast to give these old slow trucks some power. I remember my grandpas 87 square body had a throttle body 350 and was a complete dog. It couldn't get out of its own way lol.

    Had a Truck almost like this one. Bought it when it was a young 3 yrs old. 305 4 Barrel dual exhaust, a/c PS and Brakes. The poor little 305 was under powerd. At less than 50,000 miles a updated 350 was dropped in, turned it into a much better Truck.

  • @jamesz024
    @jamesz024 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    Yes its right to adjust timing dwell with the vacum disconnect and than after you reach the recommand timming replug and adjust idling rpm to arond 700to 850 since you have manual tranny good job guys.

  • @mdnghtrdr79
    @mdnghtrdr79 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    If your timing is doing that, you may have the advance connected to manifold vacuum instead of ported vacuum. Or if your using a thermal vacuum switch, it may be connected backwards. In the past they'd use a thermal vacuum switch to apply manifold vacuum to the advance on a cold engine for faser idle and warm up. But at any rate you shouldn't have any vacuum at the advance at idle.

    The ZZ6 vacuum advance should be left disconnected. If you are using the HEI distributor that comes with the engine, then it is setup for internal centrifugal advance only to achieve the correct timing.

    I think road chaser productions has found its newest star Ted. He can team up and do coverage for all the car shows, gauntlets, test runs, break down segments etc. Being a European auto specialist in America is a commodity. He's clearly a car guy. Knew how to put the guts of this truck together, with assistance from his 3 techs (Roman, Andre,Tommy)
    He can speak in complete sentences to the public looking for insight on mechanic know how. I don't this he's an ego maniac. Otherwise he would of hijacked this entire series by hogging all the camera time. He only plugged his website. And was apologetic in the end, when he whiskey dented the bed of the truck. I wonder if Roman was upset? it looks like they are buddies, so who knows. Either way, Roman and Ted would make a great duo. To replace the 2 guys on Wheeler Dealers.

    I really like the color of Big Green, you guys have built yourself a very nice truck. I've been wanting to build a nice k10/20 or K5 but I'm deftly afraid of a lot of the same issues you guys encountered and without an ace mechanic like Ted at my disposal it could get really expensive. I think if your not a good mechanic the only feasible way is to buy one that someone else has already built correctly. Want to sell Big Green?

    The GMPP HT 383 or ZZ383 would have been the best choice for your truck, a lot better drivability, for the price you definitely want the extra cid and a dual plane intake, the zz6 350 is great in 3500lb cars, not a truck engine fyi

    I guess there's something to be said for the simplicity of a mechanical fan, but electric is quieter and more efficient. The faster you get to operating temp, the better, and forcing air through the radiator when you don't need it costs power and hurts economy.
