I feel like this is the first strictly numbers review I've been able to find on the new version and it's much appreciated. Was really bummed when Ian dismissed reviewing the updated version. I feel Matts content is really going to speak to the everyday golfer who can't really afford the fully custom CC route and all that comes with that. There's absolutely a place for both types of content and I can't wait to watch both. I feel Matt is filling a gap in the TH-cam market space that has been badly overlooked.
The Kirkland is perfect for a large percentage of golfers out there who hit the ball too low, with too little spin. When I was a club fitter, I found that most people I was fitting, needed more height and spin. This is especially true off the irons.
I have the opposite Proble m Too High and too much Spin ,Old Ball Player ,Will be 67 but still Got lots of Power . Moved the Ball Back and Voila !! Got rid of My Mizuno Hot Metal with 95 gram recoil graphite ,Too High ,Got New Cobra Aerojet irons with 110 g stiff Tour light KBS irons and have gained maybe 15 yards per Club ,Playing Chrome soft x ,Put the Pro v1’s in Garage!

My only response, being someone who plays the KSig, is that the durability is absolutely on par with ProV etc. I can play an entire round with one and have it still look in good enough shape to play again.

Great video capturing all the different factors. If you're losing a few balls a round, it's unlikely to be due to how well fit the ball is, so for most people, taking away the stress of an expensive lost ball is really helpful. 95%+ of a ProV1 at 25% the cost.
The comparison with the P790s was a great idea! I feel there are a decent amount of amateur golfers out there with strong lofted irons using the incorrect ball. Ironically, I am the inverse in terms of Kirkland spin numbers from strong lofted irons. I have to play a lower spinning ball with my JPX 921 irons because the Kirkland still spins too much with the stronger lofts. I now play Chrome Soft balls which lower my spin to reasonable levels with the strong lofted irons. The Kirkland ball is still very nice after considering the price to performance aspect. I have a few dozen of the previous version Kirkland balls I can send you if you ever felt inclined to do a V1 vs. V2 comparison. Thanks for the insight as usual Matt.
Just got some JPX 923 Tours and have the same problem! Spinning at almost 8,000 rpm for a 7 iron lol. Any other suggestions for low spinning balls? I’m going to try the Bridgestone B RX because they are supposed to be the lowest spinning off the irons according to the MyGolfSpy guys
I get along pretty well with the Chrome Soft (non X or X-LS), Pro V1 (non X), TP5 (non X), Tour Response, and Mizuno Tour. My swing speed wouldn't benefit from using any of the "X" versions. I know those are more premium priced balls and that sucks. If I'm on a water laden course, you can bet I'm teeing up with the Kirklands. I'll deal with the extra spin instead of sending $4 into the water haha
I played these balls for awhile. Did feel like I was losing some distance and you described it best when you said it felt like there was a shell making it clicky. Thank you for confirming it wasnt my imagination. Ball isnt for me but it is a unbeatable price.

Given the price, and the amount of balls one loses when you first start, it deserves a thorough inquiry like you just did. The V3 model supposedly drops the spin a bit, according to reports from the US. It'd be interesting to see you get your hands on those and redo this. I'll fully admit, I play K-Sigs as my gamer ball and used it when I got fit for my driver (114 mph swing speed, 161 mph ball speed at the top end).

You know Matt I think something you hit on is that it’s not the best fit for everyone. With that being said the majority of amateur golf are slower swing speed players and spin wouldn’t hurt them. Also I recommend a Kirkland to a lot of people just because even with the extra spin it’s urethane vs ionomer. Which I think is huge benefit. Good video, keep up the good work.
Thank you! I play Kirkland cause of the value so I've watched quite a bit of the videos on them. I think this is the first one where someone switched clubs (not just from irons to wedges) to see how loft impacts the flight. Really insightful to see.
The spin was the issue when I tried to use them, hard to hit into the wind with them. Thanks for showing the test. I guess someone could fit their clubs around the ball.
My unqualified opinion for someone who is just starting to break 90 more regularly: the Driver is not where I'm going to get significant strokes gained anyways. It's 160 yards and in and sticking greens from those distances + putting that's making a difference for an average golfer's scorecard. I birdied two holes back-to-back with the Kirkland V2 this summer, so I wasn't complaining in the moment. I've migrated to the TM Tour Response as my go-to for now (as I think it's the next-best price-to-performance step up from Kirkland), but I've still got a few boxes of Kirklands that I will mix into my bag if I'm on an unfamiliar course or shooting over a water hazard or playing on a cold fall day in Edmonton. They also make for a nice fist-bump gift to give to your buddy who takes the time to book a round of golf for you both. Great video, keep it up!
It's crazy to think that Tiger plays the B XS which is close to as spinny as the Kirkland, as WELL as iron lofts that are 2-3 degrees weaker than "modern traditional" (34 degree 7 iron). Makes sense considering how hard and fast so many PGA venue greens are playing nowadays, I think I remember hearing Trottie say something along the lines of him looking for closer to 8000RPMS on his 7 iron.

Loved to see how the ball (and Matts speed) loved the P790 but didn't fair as well with his gamers. Goes to show you how its so ket to try different combos (including the BALL) when going for a fit.
Bought the new ones last week, had a round with them for the first time this past Saturday. My issue is the covers are crap, I stripped it with 1 full wedge and 1 bunker shot. I've not had a ball do that since the 2019 Mizuno RB balls or the old 2000s Titleist balls.

As a 14hcp w 90mph driver speed... yes I'm lucky to hit a drive 250... Kirkland balls are the ONLY way for me to stick a short iron on my spot. It's awesome to see my ball checkup and stop when I have the right yardage. Kirkland spin is my friend!
This summer I was struggling with a long, right miss. I'm a lefty, and it was a low-spin hook. I'd found a Kirkland ball and played a few holes with it, since I knew it had a reputation as being a spinny ball -- and it went really well. Hit a few greens in a row. I eventually hit a cart path on a tee shot, which scuffed it up enough that I tossed it. But I thought there might be something there. Separately, I was working with a fitter on some other stuff a couple weeks ago, and he told me my driver spin had tipped into the "too low" territory -- I had a few around 1700-1800. A really good virtual lesson with Matt has really improved that long right miss I'd had with my irons, but I grabbed a box of Kirklands at Costco the other night thinking maybe they'll give me a little help with driver. We'll see how it goes. I could definitely see someone who's trying to keep costs down but wants to play a nice, new set built to their specs going with a lower-spin DTC iron from Takomo or Sub70 or Haywood and pairing it with a Kirkland ball to get results much like what you saw with the P790 here!
I picked up 12 dozen, can't beat the price. Major point is losing a prov1 drives me crazy and will spend way to much time looking for it. Now just grab another Kirkland and play on. Great review Matty.
I've been playing the Kirkland's since 2022, and love them!! I probably lose maybe a 1/2 club vs other ball's i use to play ( maxfli softfli's and similar balls ) but the cost / performance is tough to beat for a 3 piece ball. Do i wish the ball was more of a softer ball? sure, but i can deal with the sacrifice. I do use Cobra one length LTDX iron's, SnakeBite OL wedges, and Cleveland Hybrids and I feel like i get plenty of distance with the ball.. Plus when i do lose a ball, i'm not saying to myself well there is another 5$ down the drain lol.
Kirklands really don't wear well. They scuff easily and the cover gets shredded with wedges and from bunkers, but I play them because I don't want to lose $5 golf balls when I miss. If you lose one or damage it, it's no sweat to just pull out another one. Feels good to me too, nice and soft off the face and a little extra spin won't hurt me with my ball speed.
Great review Matty. Can you do a quick follow-up using your 'average golfer' swing speed, say around 75 - 80 mph 7 iron? It would be great to see if a slower-swinger could get more spin, height and carry with the Kirkland. Cheers.
All golf balls today are more alike than they are different. The best ball is the one you like and have confidence in. Kirkland is a decent ball for the price. MyGolfSpy says the V3 is firmer than previous lower compression Kirkland balls with an average compression of 93 - that's higher than the 87 of the Titlest Pro V1...! I like the feel of a softer ball off the driver.
I've been playing them and have found I'm a solid club short vs Pro V1 or comparable tour balls, like Srixon Z Star. I like the price but I'll be switching back to a name brand soon.
I’m 22 and fresh out of college without a lot of disposable income. Unless I find a ProV1 or something in a bush, I’ll only play the kirklands. Launch and spin is too high for me so I know I lose some in the long game, but around the greens is so much better than anything in the price category.
A Kirkland and Pro V1 scuff the same when you hit them off trees and cart paths. Wonder how this might compare to Vice (or other) balls that are in the same price range?
Nice segment @matt, would be interested to see you do the same equipment matching with the driver... Maybe a Paradigm Triple Diamond would be a great fit...????
I would argue that spin is control and those Kirklands are keeping you close to fairway on mishits if not on while a few of those prov1 dropped sub 1900 which on unplayable for score but cool for distance
This is an extremely well done video from the technical standpoint. He demonstrates the similarities and differences between Kirkland and ProV1 in a very clear and systematic manner with intelligent explanation that is easy to understand. I look forward to seeing more of his videos.
The big take away is, I think, combined with strong -lofted hollow-bodied irons these balls perform really well. The target audience maybe isn’t low handicappers playing with trad loft players irons, but the average golfer on a budget who are buying DTC irons (and will buy the Kirkland irons when they come out) and can have a combination that gives them the distance and spin they think they are supposed to have at a much lower price.
Could you do the same "adjustment" with the driver as you did with the iron head change. Sub in a lower spin driver head to reach a more optimal spin rate? Obviously Ball speed was lower, but could possibly get some more carry/total yards by dropping that spin rate with the driver.
The ball pictured in the video looks like the Kirkland v2, with + . >. The v3 has +>>. Which version are you testing here? The v3 for me was lower traj and less spinny overall. The v3 did feel a bit harder than the v2 as well.
You should've tested the new V3, they've been out for around 5 months now? I've found them quite a bit less spinny, really good ball, nothing close to the bang for the buck to these.
If you ask Trottie from Taylormade, he would tell you that he wants to spin to be your iron times 1,000, so a 7-iron should have around 7,000 - 7,500 spin. That allows Tour Players to stop the ball on firm greens. So the Kirkland spin seems to be ideal for the lofts you play. But you also have to look at it in conjunction with your descent angle.
If you go to Costco instead of buying online the balls are 27.99 - so only $1.17 per ball. Also, the ball shown appears to be the old model and the V3 (black box) are out now and i've heard at least slightly less spin. They seem more durable to me. And come in yellow.
Good sensible evaluation. Really, any urethane 3 piece ball is great, no matter what a Pro v! snob I am. BUT - if Costco's ball COST the same as Titleist's, well - no contest! The prestige is worth it. One more thing. My various golf pals argue this point but they can't break 90, except here and there. Plus they lose balls. So, Kirkland is the proper choice. One other thing I really like about Kirkland is how they are in a 23 ball tube and are great for chipping and pitching practice, at - as you point out - $1.50 per. Can't beat that. When I have an occasional short game training session, I can use or even give away, Kirkland balls. Many people playing golf do Not understand why the Urethane cover allowed this ball to replace Balata. Now, for a few bucks, they can beat these to death, learn to keep their wedge grooves clean, and not give up anything in short game performance. Yes, spinny, not when wanted. But short game spinny is not particularly relevant as it varies little from the other premium ball producers. I want to add that Kirkland balls are OK to practice putting with. They feel soft-ish, and they soil easier, but if one has a sensible putting practice discipline, Kirkland's are fine for the money. I like your channel, finding it one year too late. I recall you and the Scot had a channel, but what came of that? Is he doing well? A likeable guy.
I always enjoyed TXG, but admittedly, when Ian would explain his thought process, often I didn't really follow. Maybe he just knows way more than me, but considering I know more than the average golfer, I wondered if his fans were more enthralled with his confidence rather than his logic. Anyway, i felt your explanation here was understandable to all. Maybe you can devote a video or two to what spin rate windows and why for each loft of club, and gapping theory. Thanks for a good video. As hard as you swing, I would think that for the much slower swinging average Joe, Kirkland balls may actually be more suited for them over Pro V1s.

For the weekend warrior this is a great ball. I have several friends 5-10 handicaps that play this ball and do great. I like the snell mtb x or vice. For the top end players who aren't losing a lot of balls and are good enough - go pro v. I also golf with a couple older very wealthy friends who love picking balls out of water hazards lol.
It’s funny how that seems to be a truisim of sorts. The ones I see who are the biggest ball hawks are also the ones who can easily afford a lifetime of brand new Pro v1’s.
Hey Matt, any recommendations on an indoor/outdoor hitting net. I plan on using foam practice 1/3 flight balls to really work on my ball striking, then maybe getting some sort of ball flight monitor and some sort of simulator eventually. My house doesn't have ceilings big enough that I can swing the driver, so that's why I'm most interested in an indoor/outdoor net. Thanks.

The one external factor is when outside wind absolutely murders this ball, just need to make sure you get good at clubbing up and taking some spin off it. It also goes a non-neglible amount further down wind due to the high spin. Great value ball & performance, IMO just not for guys who are really dialed in.
As a player who hits steep and spinny I really struggled with the Kirkland as I found it hit too low but spinny for me. Always thought that players who are nice and shallow or hit draws should have a really easy time with this ball
Matt the ball you showed in the intro is actually the last gen. New gen has 2 arrows on each side of the alignment aid and is much better on durability but a little harder shell so the feel isn’t as soft
Anyone know how the Kirkland performs off a 'game improvement' iron when you match the loft to a 'players' iron? For example, on center punch hits, is a 35 degree P790 8i getting the same descent angle and spin but more yardage than a 35 degree P7MB 7i?
There's a difference between the online price and the warehouse price for them. It's just over $1/ball at the warehouse. Right around $27 for two dozen.

I tend to be a lower spin player, and play jpx 921 forged so a bit strong. This ball has worked out for me.

I probably lose maybe a 1/2 club vs other ball's i use to play ( maxfli softfli's and similar balls ) but the cost / performance is tough to beat for a 3 piece ball. Do i wish the ball was more of a softer ball? sure, but i can deal with the sacrifice. I do use Cobra one length LTDX iron's, SnakeBite OL wedges, and Cleveland Hybrids and I feel like i get plenty of distance with the ball.. Plus when i do lose a ball, i'm not saying to myself well there is another 5$ down the drain lol.
Kirklands really don't wear well. They scuff easily and the cover gets shredded with wedges and from bunkers, but I play them because I don't want to lose $5 golf balls when I miss. If you lose one or damage it, it's no sweat to just pull out another one. Feels good to me too, nice and soft off the face and a little extra spin won't hurt me with my ball speed.
Great review Matty. Can you do a quick follow-up using your 'average golfer' swing speed, say around 75 - 80 mph 7 iron? It would be great to see if a slower-swinger could get more spin, height and carry with the Kirkland. Cheers.
You used the V2.0 but you should definitely review the v3 black box new Kirkland ball!

All golf balls today are more alike than they are different. The best ball is the one you like and have confidence in. Kirkland is a decent ball for the price. MyGolfSpy says the V3 is firmer than previous lower compression Kirkland balls with an average compression of 93 - that's higher than the 87 of the Titlest Pro V1...! I like the feel of a softer ball off the driver.
I've been playing them and have found I'm a solid club short vs Pro V1 or comparable tour balls, like Srixon Z Star. I like the price but I'll be switching back to a name brand soon.

I’m 22 and fresh out of college without a lot of disposable income. Unless I find a ProV1 or something in a bush, I’ll only play the kirklands. Launch and spin is too high for me so I know I lose some in the long game, but around the greens is so much better than anything in the price category.
I play them with persimmon woods and vintage irons, cant complain!
A Kirkland and Pro V1 scuff the same when you hit them off trees and cart paths. Wonder how this might compare to Vice (or other) balls that are in the same price range?

I would argue that spin is control and those Kirklands are keeping you close to fairway on mishits if not on while a few of those prov1 dropped sub 1900 which on unplayable for score but cool for distance
The launch angle on proV was 1 deg higher. Maybe that makes up 5-10 yards and lower spin.
This is an extremely well done video from the technical standpoint. He demonstrates the similarities and differences between Kirkland and ProV1 in a very clear and systematic manner with intelligent explanation that is easy to understand. I look forward to seeing more of his videos.

The big take away is, I think, combined with strong
-lofted hollow-bodied irons these balls perform really well. The target audience maybe isn’t low handicappers playing with trad loft players irons, but the average golfer on a budget who are buying DTC irons (and will buy the Kirkland irons when they come out) and can have a combination that gives them the distance and spin they think they are supposed to have at a much lower price.

Could you do the same "adjustment" with the driver as you did with the iron head change. Sub in a lower spin driver head to reach a more optimal spin rate? Obviously Ball speed was lower, but could possibly get some more carry/total yards by dropping that spin rate with the driver.
Thats a good test to watch Matt, well done. Someone not coming in with a pre-loaded bias trying to take something 'cheap' down is great to watch..
The ball pictured in the video looks like the Kirkland v2, with + . >. The v3 has +>>. Which version are you testing here? The v3 for me was lower traj and less spinny overall. The v3 did feel a bit harder than the v2 as well.

You should've tested the new V3, they've been out for around 5 months now? I've found them quite a bit less spinny, really good ball, nothing close to the bang for the buck to these.

If you ask Trottie from Taylormade, he would tell you that he wants to spin to be your iron times 1,000, so a 7-iron should have around 7,000 - 7,500 spin. That allows Tour Players to stop the ball on firm greens. So the Kirkland spin seems to be ideal for the lofts you play. But you also have to look at it in conjunction with your descent angle.

If you go to Costco instead of buying online the balls are 27.99 - so only $1.17 per ball. Also, the ball shown appears to be the old model and the V3 (black box) are out now and i've heard at least slightly less spin. They seem more durable to me. And come in yellow.

Good sensible evaluation. Really, any urethane 3 piece ball is great, no matter what a Pro v! snob I am. BUT - if Costco's ball COST the same as Titleist's, well - no contest! The prestige is worth it. One more thing. My various golf pals argue this point but they can't break 90, except here and there. Plus they lose balls. So, Kirkland is the proper choice. One other thing I really like about Kirkland is how they are in a 23 ball tube and are great for chipping and pitching practice, at - as you point out - $1.50 per. Can't beat that. When I have an occasional short game training session, I can use or even give away, Kirkland balls. Many people playing golf do Not understand why the Urethane cover allowed this ball to replace Balata. Now, for a few bucks, they can beat these to death, learn to keep their wedge grooves clean, and not give up anything in short game performance. Yes, spinny, not when wanted. But short game spinny is not particularly relevant as it varies little from the other premium ball producers.
I want to add that Kirkland balls are OK to practice putting with. They feel soft-ish, and they soil easier, but if one has a sensible putting practice discipline, Kirkland's are fine for the money.

I always enjoyed TXG, but admittedly, when Ian would explain his thought process, often I didn't really follow. Maybe he just knows way more than me, but considering I know more than the average golfer, I wondered if his fans were more enthralled with his confidence rather than his logic. Anyway, i felt your explanation here was understandable to all. Maybe you can devote a video or two to what spin rate windows and why for each loft of club, and gapping theory. Thanks for a good video. As hard as you swing, I would think that for the much slower swinging average Joe, Kirkland balls may actually be more suited for them over Pro V1s.

For the weekend warrior this is a great ball. I have several friends 5-10 handicaps that play this ball and do great. I like the snell mtb x or vice. For the top end players who aren't losing a lot of balls and are good enough - go pro v. I also golf with a couple older very wealthy friends who love picking balls out of water hazards lol.
It’s funny how that seems to be a truisim of sorts. The ones I see who are the biggest ball hawks are also the ones who can easily afford a lifetime of brand new Pro v1’s.

Hey Matt, any recommendations on an indoor/outdoor hitting net. I plan on using foam practice 1/3 flight balls to really work on my ball striking, then maybe getting some sort of ball flight monitor and some sort of simulator eventually. My house doesn't have ceilings big enough that I can swing the driver, so that's why I'm most interested in an indoor/outdoor net.

The one external factor is when outside wind absolutely murders this ball, just need to make sure you get good at clubbing up and taking some spin off it. It also goes a non-neglible amount further down wind due to the high spin. Great value ball & performance, IMO just not for guys who are really dialed in.

As a player who hits steep and spinny I really struggled with the Kirkland as I found it hit too low but spinny for me. Always thought that players who are nice and shallow or hit draws should have a really easy time with this ball

Matt the ball you showed in the intro is actually the last gen. New gen has 2 arrows on each side of the alignment aid and is much better on durability but a little harder shell so the feel isn’t as soft

Anyone know how the Kirkland performs off a 'game improvement' iron when you match the loft to a 'players' iron? For example, on center punch hits, is a 35 degree P790 8i getting the same descent angle and spin but more yardage than a 35 degree P7MB 7i?
