Frank did good job as usual....I would like to share swami Vivekananda's quote to a foreigner..."In your country tailor makes a gentleman,in my country character does" ..let's not bother what the westerners and srilankan think of us...v r capable enough introspect and rectify our shortcomings....n if at all any foreigner has doubt about Indian media dn they are suggested to watch rstv for a month at least...

I am very eagerly waiting for India's journalists to report the negative news about the European and western countries, only negative news is what news is all about after all. Lets bring the negative side of the west to the huge outward looking Indian population. Lets build a perspective of the west based on criticism lets do it! By the way I feel obliged that I do this every day and hence bringing the true value to the term news. Come on people let us all 1.3 billion Indian population highlight the negatives of the west because indeed we people have some expectations from the west.😉

Exactly. Criticism is one way of looking at our fallacies and then working on them to improve ourselves. I still don’t know what makes us lose our brains when somebody criticises us when instead we should be thanking the person validly criticising us so to fix our deficiencies.

This is how propaganda is done ... If you rely on foreigners to dictate agenda, you will always be colonised ... This attitude is what the great Malcolm X called "House Negro" attitude ...
And people like Jeferry Gettleman are well-known racist, as has been exposed on Twitter many times ...
Do white foreigners EVER EVER take criticism from any other country (especially from us dark ones) ?! That's why they are powerful and we beggars ...

and they declared INDIA as most dangerous country in world for women without bothering to come to INDIA and conduct a survey......they just asked "548 experts" .....first you feed them all negative news from India and then ask their opinion, how dumb is that.......
having said that i agree with you that we should take these criticisms in positive way and should improve ourselves....

the world remains "fascinated" by India he says. I think one reason the west criticizes India could be because they are still not able to digest the fact that India has not been balkanized in spite of this huge diversity.

Hindi can be easily converted into English like it happens at global platform

The debate was good. The NYT guy made some interesting comments like relating the safety of journalists to rule of law etc. The comments of the Lady in the panel about safety issues of journalist who criticise the ruling dispensation were note worthy. The opinion made by srilankan fellow that hindi is a hindrance does not hold water. Hindi can be translated easily if the media person take initiative. And I also think that some of the media groups in the international news space are biased towards India (or may be the party in power today). But we can take steps to do whatever we can do from our side. The govt should really open up itself to the media outlets where ever possible (except national security) India's stance on rule based international order, climate change and Yoga have made news too which uplift India' image. Similar initiatives can be taken to reverse the present biases against India.

Show started on India's ranking on various platforms (press, women safety and so on... ) and everyone was discussing the how foreign reporters are feeling in India and language barrier...first time I found show was not to the point analysis!
Missing important points - why only India's negative side shown in foreign media, why not China, Singapore and other countries? --why foreign media focusing on the reports on which no one believes? (Most of the reports are published by Americans and British agencies... they are lacking the ground reality, using developed countries criteria for developing countries like India!)
-- why foreign media covers more news on religious intolerance and concerning about the safety of minority and women in India?
( other countries much more intolerant than India... and woman safety issue is not only related to India its a global issue then why India....)
-- Reports on Refugees --When India said It would deport rohingya... it was completely pictured in negative way without showing the facts... and what about the European countries and USA's stand on Refugees?

King of Knights its true! Rohingya themselves created problem... now entangled in it! But it is the half picture... we cannot blame all Rohingya community ( I mean look at the faces of small kids do they look like armed rebels to any neighbouring nations to Myanmar or to Myanmar itself?)
when India took decsion on deportation of Rohingya it was in complete dilemma between humanity and threat to the nation's security... which foreign media misinterpreted as inhuman stance of India. Later on India helped Rohingya's in Bangladesh under 'Opration Insaniyat' as usual foreign media never showed this.

Visiting comment section was hard. I'm afraid we have failed to understand the Big picture here.
Why u guys only took one point "Hindi". Okay, so do one thing search for states which have only one official language and it's "Hindi" , is there more than 3 states? No! Now search states where English is one of the official languages. What did you find? Most of the states!!
Even all top tier exams in our country happened in English. So why praising hindi when it's dying from our society and system.
I agree that western media is pretty biased portraying India but India govt should take actions like China did. Ban any foreign media to reach out poor parts of the country. And why our PM doesn't give any open interview, why is he so afraid and we as people have some duties too.
Facebook is full of stories with shit about India and we are the one who creating these. We gave them opportunities to talk negative about us.

In this conversation I found that
    we need to have
    1. Easy access to information.
    2. If we know many languages then we should speak in which the listner is comfortable.
    3. Yes! Journalists ( even our own External Affairs Minister is not safe on Twitter ) are not safe as they are in USA, ( see Stephen Colbert criticising Trump ) we need to value journalists and protect them by making Rule of Law more strong.
    3. We need to have a thick skin if someone criticizes us we need to find positive things in that and improve.
    4. There are lot of positive things about India but many things need to be improved and it is time that we correct ourselves.
Any additional thing can be added below

I don't think hiring a hindi translater is much of a deal for NYT, its the least they can do for a large country like india. I think its hilarious.
Also, there is something called leverage of one's power and money to influence the wider audience to further one's motives. Critisism should have the same effect/influence on both sides.
Even if india/developing countries start criticizing the US on gun laws, black rights, foreign policies, ecological irresponsibility, i doubt it would effect the west in any way.
The perception that is built by reports generally lack the backing of good amount of data. They use a small sample size of influencial people(or local biased media) who have no clue about the realities at ground zero.
This perception then hurts India economically (tourism, businesses, foreign investments).
Also there is a lot of false news about india, which the journalists should be accountable for, but they don't care coz that's their ultimate motive. How is that fair (with power comes great responsibilities).

Addressed to Frank: You cannot respond to a comment on death of journalists by claiming corruption among journalists. The worst journalists can misinform the public, but the worst politician/bureaucrat/business can get a journalist killed. Corruption among journalists, and death of journalists are BOTH because of lack of law and order.
One irresponsible comment by Frank, a weak premise for debate, but a commendable choice of panellists.

It's sad that even after 75 years of independence, we still trying to convey our positions to outer world. Although the outer world does not have Damm idea about the position of India. India needs deliberation, fair discussions, fault acceptance in matters of religious concepts of one particular religion, and that is Islam. We phylosophical sons of India have produced the most inclusive ideas in matters of religion, like - there is one truth but to gain that truth the ways could be different, that means my faith could be right your faith could be right. But sadly Islam teaches there is only one truth ALLAH, and only one way to gain that by following (Sharia). Until we discuss this concept in fair debate there isn't gonna be credible media in India. We have to make Islam compatible to live with India, its sad after realising that existing for more than 1000 years Islam didn't become inclusive phylosophically and religiously. They still calls non believers as kafirs.

Some of the points raised by the guests are partly true like lack of access to ministers and government spokespersons. But Mr. Venkat Narayan and Jeffrey must be aware of something like pib, which releases all government communications in English also. Though I&B minister meets press occasionally, It's time to have regular or even daily press briefings by "PMO Communications Secy" on the lines of Whitehouse Communications director. The government should put it's perspective and show what it is doing, not just to foreign media but media in general.

If you disagree with what your company says they fire you. That's western media for you.
Also to whoever says Indian Politicians need to learn English well Japanese, Korean and lots of Europeans leader don't speak English. They respect their own language and culture.
There is a reason translator jobs exist.
I am not bashing on anyone who does speak english. Heck i speak english.
But a person should not have to learn another language for someone elses convenience.
Most things Narayanji said is wrong. In western countries you can send as many emails and calls but the ministers don't answer unless it's something that will help them win another election.

I thought journalism means to bring out facts and not broadcast your opinions. Opinion making i thought was best left to the viewer coz opinion in its nature is always biased. Aren't today's journalists trying to be opinion makers rather than facts presenter.
How is it journalism when you have no clear idea about the country or its people but you make sure that you use your influence to form a biased isolated incidents(in a population greater than that of North America+Eurpoe),ill-informed opinion based on distorted/selective data, which has its bearing on the country economically(tourism, business, FDI, threat of sanctions as a trump card to control the weaker country etc.)
With great power comes great responsibilities- it doen't seem to apply to journalism it seems.
Why should i not question the journalistic community of being biased. Are they gods, even gods should be questioned in my opinion.

Lets bring the negative side of the west to the huge outward looking Indian population. Lets build a perspective of the west based on criticism lets do it! By the way I feel obliged that I do this every day and hence bringing the true value to the term news. Taking things into perspective - India is world's largest democracy of 1.3 billion people. Today it is transitioning into a developed country. With that said, as a journalist, should I focus on a grand scheme of things or should I focus on an outlier that happened in some corner of the country and provide a selective and a subjective picture about a complex religious and multiple linguistic India? When you do compare, do an apples to apples comparision, please.

ya lets criticise the US about their gun laws, rapes, black racism, foreign policies whenever we talk about the US. Would it effect the US, i don't think so. There is something called leverage of money, and power to influence the wider audience to suit one's interests. So whenever your friend(a very influencial person) talks about you/ mentions you he/she should always criticize to the point that nobody comes close to you and you should endlessly keep introspecting yourself for everything he/she talks about, coz surely she is doing it for your betterment even if he/she uses you as a stepping stone to further his/her motives.

This is one boring discussion, what are you trying to gauge? Frank, women in general are not safe in india or journalist are not safe in india? Which one is it. But i can tell you something, reporters do not report a marriage festival, they report if there is a dramatic event taking place in that event for eg. Fire, murder, thats how news reporting is all about. And with regards to safety of journalists in india, you may refer the data, with regards to women safety you may refer the data, compare them vis a vis western data, hullah, you get your answer. By the way, you are not asking those specifics either, your question is, why negatives got reported about india by foreign media? Venkat narayan gave you the missing puzzle, u want good reports? Feed the foreugn journalists the good data, but at the end of the day, bbc sends reporters to iraq or afhanistan not to report about how many movies they make or what kind of hobbies the politicians pursue? Wake up, dont blame the guests, clean up your house, the lady panel said it all, in france journalists do not get killed.

One off events shouldn't be reported as heavily in the news. I feel like news should have a overall point around it IE: using statistics + an event to inform viewers that doing a this certain thing isn't safe. Because at the moment people who see the news don't get told" Hey that certain thing doesn't happen that often, according to statistics. so we're just informing you about it cuz we thought it was cool" 18:00 If we could ban the China shrills off the internet that'll be good step in lessening the perception that India is dirty.
