The Incredible True Story Behind The 'Lonely Fan' Viral Photograph

- Many people who are active online will be familiar with the 'lonely fan' meme that went viral in 2012, showing a sad looking FC Santa Cruz fan witnessing his team lose 4-1 to Gremio.
Eight years later, another image of this fan went viral side-by-side with the first photograph, showing him sat in the stands alongside a trophy, now serving as the club's president.
I decided I wanted to find out who was this man, this club, and what was the true story within Brazilian football that had created these two images - and that's exactly what I've done.
So in this short documentary, HITC Sevens tells the tale of FC Santa Cruz, Tiago Rech, and one of Brazil's greatest recent underdog stories.

They've also just won the Gaucho 3 finals, which (im pretty sure) means they are promoted for next season.
They're going to the Promotion Division, it's a weird thing that exists on the Gaúcho Championship

Man this was really really informative, I had no idea there were so many level in Brazilian Football and also the geographic and historic info was perfect to go with it, shows how culture and heritage play a part in shaping a club no matter how big or small, been following this channel for many years now, absolutely love the amount of research you put into this, keep up the goodwork Alfie. 🤘❤️

I´m Brazilian and I live in Rio Grande do Sul, and honestly, this video is super complete. I already knew the story form Santa Cruz, and I can tell you, this video is by far the most complete I have ever seen, even better than videos in Portuguese (our home language). You actually can get promoted from the lower regionals leagues to the Brasileirão.
The CBF organizes the Brasileirão from the first division to the fourth division but the way each team qualifies to the fourth division depends on their performance on their respective state championship (or by getting relegated in the Brasileirão série C)
to add to the beauty of it all: Santa Cruz won the Campeonato Gaúcho 3rd division last month, making it their second title in all of the clubs history.
As a Brazilian, I commend the host's attempt to read names in Portuguese!

Day 3: I think you should do a "The rise and fall of Sheffield Wednesday". Obviously they used to be (and still are) a big club with a lot of problems. There's probably a few clubs you could do this with in League One also.
Would love to see this. Portsmouth, Nottingham Forest, and Sunderland would all be good fits for that kind of video too.

They're not a big club, what makes them a big club? Handful of games in Europe since the 60s? 18k average attendance in the championship pre pandemic? They USED to be a slightly above average club many decades ago, probably most of the fans who followed them in their heyday are long since dead.
This is an extremely so interesting story of a club's supporter who became a president of the club which he has been supporting ever since he was a child,good friends!!!:-D

I have always viewed Brazilian domestic football as a beloved enigma, thanks to the ramblings of Alfie it's more beloved but less of an enigma.

Alfie got into the rabbit hole of brazilian football folclore, i can guarante is gonna be a long journey. Fun fact, Santa Cruz do Sul has two clubs, not just Santa Cruz, but also their city rivals Avenida (literally means Avenue in english). Avenida have been more succesful in the recent years, yo-yoing between the first and second division of the Rio Grande do Sul State Championships (like West Brom in England), although they didn't won any trophy like Santa Cruz did.
As a Brazilian, I never knew Santa Cruz's nickname was Galo? In Brazil there is a MUCH bigger team that is known for Galo, which means rooster, and that's Atletico Mineiro. They play in the top league and somehow signed Diego Costa and Hulk XD

I think people can appreciate longer form content while also acknowledging when something feels artificially elongated (through repetition/saying the same things in different ways or doing a 3-4 minute intro) for the benefit of ad-revenue.

the Brazilian League Pyramid is somewhat strange but it's basically this
Série A
Série B
Série C
each with 20 clubs, A & B follow a league format and C uses a group stage thingy i don't know the name in english
Série D
State Championship
the Série D is basically the entry point for the Brazilian League and every year it is composed from the 4 relegated teams from série C + the 4/3/2 best teams from every state championship first division/state cup(depends on the state) in the country that do not play in a national league(Série A, B and C teams)

Lovely to see some Southern Brasilian focus on this channel. I'll give you a 6/10 for pronunciation there Alfie. Little bit of advice - Only the Carioca's (Inhabitants of Rio) speak with the Portuguese s/z - Everywhere else in Brasil (that I've experienced), the s/z is much less through the teeth. My Fiancé is from the state above Rio Grande do Sul (Santa Catarina, near Blumenthal) and they speak Portuguese almost in an Italian delivery, although they also do celebrate Oktoberfest and dress in Lederhosen. Its a funny area of the world for sure.

Day 3: Raise of Brighton and Hove Albion: Day 1 of doing the work: Last Year of the Goldstone (96/97 season), sale of stadium and owners needing to get the club relegated so they could keep all the money from the sale of ground and close the club without FA restrictions. 2) 1997 Final game 1-0 down to Hereford, own goal by a young player who went on to become a full legend, 1-1 full time, loss would of meant our relegation that season. 3) Search for a new stadium, Priestfield Stadium, was best we could find 75 mile away and were only allowed to use half of it.
