  • In Gate Money, sports journalist Fred Atkins aims to find out why what should have been feel-good story turned into a tale of bitterness and abuse for clubs and fans of England's lower-level football divisions. A global pandemic, a 10 million pound lottery grant and 66 Non-League football clubs. What could possibly go wrong?
The 57-minute investigative documentary film is directed by Jasper Spanjaart (SPNJRT Media Productions) and presented by Fred Atkins. The film features interviews with former FA chairman David Bernstein, former Minister of Sport Tracey Crouch, football finance teacher and podcast host Kieran Maguire, BBC Non-League Show presenter Ollie Bayliss, and representatives from Chester FC, Dorking Wanderers, Dulwich Hamlet, Maidstone United and Tonbridge Angels.

Isn't it just fantastic when an organisation that claims to be part of community and family, behave like self interested selfish children or a mafia.
Sometimes it seems a total remodelling on football organisation is maybe a good idea ? Maybe even how clubs are organised. It seems to have hardly changed since the 1800s.

What a brilliant documentary this is. Excellent production and as a non league fan I can say honestly I am disgusted and angry at the National League for their underhand actions which could have seen many clubs go into financial crisis. I hope the filmmakers are rewarded with the reform that the league needs because it's a disgrace what has happened.
If you love football, especially non league football then you simply must watch this documentary

My club Darlington lost more than £70k out of this, may not sound like much in the grand scheme of football but for a fan run club like ours it’s a huge amount and has likely set the club back a few years, same for Chester FC and Maidstone United. I dread to think what it has done to those clubs who don’t get as much through the gate to begin with.

I only usually get what the media choose to post on their sites and so I don't get or understand much of what's going on, I'm oblivious. These things need bringing out to everybody to see, unfortunately Sky couldn't give a f#*k even though they spout 'grassroots' football what do they actually do for non league? Great insights of what occurred. Hopefully it gets investigated. The league then threatened clubs for not participating when they had no funding to cover playing costs during the pandemic. Some of these clubs got relegated and point deductions for not complying to bullying mandates.

Ironically though, one of the clubs that refused to play was Dover Athletic. Their chairman, who is mentioned in this documentary because he was on the National League Board at the time, ensured his club was one of the main beneficiaries of the payout because their home gates (despite being in the top division at the time) were terrible. What he and his club did with that money is still not certain. All we do know is that Dover later refused to play and got a huge points deduction. They also stopped investing in the team and they got relegated. Naturally he used the apparent 'abuse' he received from Maidstone fans as an excuse not to comment. We all know the real reason he chose to have nothing to do with the programme.

Excellent documentary but not at all surprised by the outcome. The National League board have made a number of high profile, bad decisions, seemingly suiting themselves or their sponsors with little regard for the wishes of the clubs or their fans. As you stated, the league is run in a fashion that is 40 years old, so I fear little will change.

Well done on a fascinating, well made, documentary. I've followed English football from Ireland for years. It's given me great pleasure. I can remember some of the National League clubs being in the "92".
It seems appalling to me how the lottery funding was split. It should have been divided along attendance lines. I also notice you made great effort to contact "the other side" in the interest of balance. As a general point, I think the upper levels of football could do with the integrity and passion of those featured in your film.

As a follower of English non-League football from Turkey, I can say that I have found this documentary very informative. It just shows how "the beautiful game" is becoming more and more "the game of the rich". It also tells us that there are two layers to football at non-League level; the pure, proper and charming side of it on the pitch, and the cruel, ruthless and unforgiving side of it behind the scenes. Whilst Barwick resigning is a good riddance, Pearce replacing him sounds a bit shady in my opinion. Not a single person from the board of National League accepting to take part in an interview indicates that they are cowards and "they look after their own pockets", to quote a certain Labour MP.

Brilliant documentary and some serious questions for the National League Board, but agree that there is always two sides to most stories. The David Bernstein independent report needs to be published. You would expect that the National League Board would want the opportunity to respond and explain the rationale behind the distribution of the money, and if not, then a public enquiry needs to be commissioned and individuals held to account.

This is nothing short of criminal. Wherever you have vested interests and money you will get people taking advantage of those less able to do so. Fantastic documentary for sure. I want to start by saying I know next to nothing about football. I am in the US and was piqued by the Welcome to Wrexham doc/program. I started trying to find Wrexham streaming and found out it isn't available. With Wrexhams newfound worldwide audience, Wrexham/Reynolds/McElhenney have been trying to get the streams available but have gotten nothing but a stop sign by the league. They have the availability to do so but the league says it is developing their own and won't budge. Wrexham even said they would share revenue with the other teams until the league gets their platform running, but still, it's a no. I couldn't understand how a low level league that finally has interest wouldn't jump at the chance to keep their league afloat. Seeing this documentary, it all makes sense. The league won't allow it until they can get their dirty hands in the money pile. This is a disgrace.

Would also raise concerns around how the governance is tackling things like safe sport, player and fan safety etc.

If you were in the trenches with them , they would probably shoot you up the arse. The whole mess could have been avoided and should have been. You could employ the tactic isolate and take them out one by one. All in all a stain on our great game. Never heard of Jack Pearce before, but my god what an arsehole he is. It brings to mind the Neil Diamond song " Money Talks", perhaps the clubs violated by this action should play the song on match days and dedicate it to Jack Pearce and the rest of the shower. Best wishes for any future action.

@@FMDan Non league, is what it says on the tin, a team that does not play in a league. You have the arrogance to think that only the teams in the top 3 or 4 divisions are league teams!!! I do not know what is going on in the leagues at present, I am not English, but there are hundreds of teams in leagues around England doing their best to keep their local teams afloat in their respective leagues. They do not deserve to be called "Non league". Where money is concerned there is always corruption but most teams get on and do their best.

@@raymonddixon7603 No need to get quite so excited about the expression, it's very simple actually. Historically, the top four divisions were administered by the Football League, the old Football League Division's one to four which was a closed shop. That is, there was promotion/relegation within that structure but admittance to that closed shop was by election only. The league's below that structure were therefore known as Non-Football League, Non-League for short. It's an expression that has continued despite there now being promotion/relegation from the fourth tier, now known as League Two and the National League, tier five.

More whingeing by the greedy few clubs who seemed to think "We've got more fans than you, so we're entitled to more money". Why should the distribution have been based solely on gate receipts? How does that tie in with preserving the sporting integrity of the league? All 66 clubs survived which is what mattered. And the fines referred to would not have been incurred if a small cartel of mainly NLS clubs had not withheld their votes on "null and voiding" the league for a number of weeks solely for tactical voting reasons.

@@adamdavis8447 The bigger clubs DID get slightly more money than the rest Adam. My club Bradford was one of the worst supported so only got £30,000 a month. Then £7,500 was taken back in fines for not fulfilling fixtures while certain clubs played silly b….rs by refusing to cast their votes in the “null and void” poll. Do you begrudge us our small share of the £10 million? The board were in a no win situation. Gate receipts were a factor in the compromise they reached, but not the only factor. Sporting integrity is also very important. The money came from the National Lottery not the government and they delegated its distribution to the league. The government, therefore, had no moral right to mandate the oversimplistic formula proposed by the producers of this programme and the greedier clubs.
