  • Here is my review of the Microsoft Surface Arc Wireless Mouse (more commonly known as simply just the "Surface Arc Mouse").
    I consider the Surface Arc Mouse to be a highly respectable product for a handful of reasons, but there are some things that you've got to know before getting this mouse. If you're interested in getting this mouse and would like to know some more information about it, this video is for you!

    ⚠ PLEASE READ IF YOU HAVE QUESTIONS ABOUT THE MIDDLE CLICK BUTTON OR MAC COMPATIBILITY!!! ⚠
    ⚠ THIS MOUSE DOES SUPPORT THE MIDDLE CLICK BUTTON!!! ⚠
    Updates in this message:
    (1) FAQ: Will it work on Apple computers? (Macs, iMacs, and MacBooks?)
    (2) ⚠ UPDATE ON THE MIDDLE CLICK BUTTON. THIS MOUSE "DOES" HAVE A MIDDLE CLICK BUTTON!!! ⚠
    •••
    (1) FAQ: Will the Surface Arc Mouse work on Apple computers (i.e. Macs, iMacs, and MacBooks)?
    Yes! The Surface Arc Mouse WILL work on your Apple computer! I've tested this on my MacBook Pro running macOS Mojave, and I can confirm that this mouse will be able to work with your Apple computer! :)
    Just pair via Bluetooth, like any other Bluetooth mouse.
    But keep this in mind: you will NOT be able to access the Surface Arc Mouse's middle click button nor will you be able to customize the left / click buttons on macOS.
    •••
    (2) ⚠ UPDATE ON THE MIDDLE CLICK BUTTON. THIS MOUSE "DOES" HAVE A MIDDLE CLICK BUTTON!!! ⚠
    A TH-camr named Dylan Taft has commented: "If you download the Microsoft Keyboard and Mouse app, it gives you a middle click - 3 fingers."
    Starting at 2:47 in my video, I start talking about how the mouse does not have a middle click button when, in fact, the Surface Arc Moues DOES HAVE A MIDDLE CLICK BUTTON!
    Please dismiss my comments regarding this mouse NOT having a middle click button! As I've said in my reply to Dylan Taft's comment, "I honestly didn't know (in the year that I've had this mouse) that the Microsoft Keyboard and Mouse Center app allowed you to customize this mouse" because "I thought that [the] program had been retired a long time ago."
    If you get the "Microsoft Keyboard and Mouse Center" application, you WILL be able to FULLY customize the Surface Arc Mouse, which includes enabling (and customizing) the hidden middle click button. The middle click button can be triggered by clicking with three fingers on the touchpad.
    NOTE: The Microsoft Keyboard and Mouse Center application is only available for Windows. It is NOT available on macOS. (This may change in the future; but as of this comment, this application is NOT available for Mac. Only Windows)

      ⚠ Please read this NEW info regarding the middle click button!!! ⚠
      •••
      Hey guys, here's a little extension of my Surface Arc Mouse review. So first off, I'm sorry that I said that this mouse does not have a middle click button, because that's completely incorrect. This mouse DOES support middle click button inputs.
      HOWEVER (AND PLEASE READ), this is NOT ON BY DEFAULT. ⚠
      You have to turn it on with the Microsoft Mouse and Keyboard Center, which I honestly think is kind of ridiculous. Most people will NOT know that this tool is available for them because of how discrete this information is.
      Furthermore, even with the middle click button enabled, I STILL DO NOT THINK THAT THIS MOUSE IS GOOD FOR 3D-MODELING PROGRAMS AND PROFESSIONAL CREATIVE SOFTWARE.
      I hope to re-clarify these things in my "Surface Arc Mouse: Revisited" (title pending) video, coming in early 2019.
      Thanks for reading!

      Hi E.J. Yu, just want to inform you that this comment (which I think is important) is showing on the bottom of the comment section. Maybe you'd want to consider to pin this comment so everyone can see it right away. =)
      Also I'm having a weird occurrence with my Arc mouse, every time the mouse is idle (when it's on but I'm not using it for a period of time), the time I start moving it, my screen always freezes for about 2 seconds before everything goes to normal. Do you get the same experience too or is it just me?
      Thanks! And btw, great content & editing! Cheers.

      @@tadeusbudiono7718 Sorry for the late reply!! Thank you for letting me know about this. I thought I had pinned this comment already 3 months ago...
      (I guess that's why people are still commenting about the middle click thing. 😪)
      Anyway, I had that issue just recently when I was trying out laptops that had the Bluetooth device "Marvell AVASTAR Bluetooth Radio Adapter". What I did to fix it was uninstall the that Marvell device and then restart my PC. (It will reinstall upon login, if I remember correctly.) The issue lies with Windows, not with the mouse itself.
      If the issue is elsewhere, then I'm afraid I don't know how to fix it. Sorry! :(
      You could always lookup basic troubleshooting steps for Windows and Bluetooth Devices to see if any of that may help solve your issue.

    This video was not half bad, and really exceeded my expectations from a small time TH-camr. Good job.
    Just a bit of constructive criticism:
    1. In my opinion, you do speak a little slowly, and combined with the pretty repetitive music, I kinda wanted to skip ahead. So I'd try speed the pace a bit, or change the music at least.
    2. Buttons - I think in 2019 it's important to mention as a downside that there are no back/forward buttons at all.
    3. Thesis - you said the arc mouse gets your recommendation because it's reliable. What about the competitors? For that amount of money you can get some of the best mice out there, like Logitech's MX master, which is better in almost every way but the design that may appeal to some. I know that you probably don't have access to any other mice, so I'd avoid sentences like "this is the one to buy". If you had access to the master I'd say "if you want a reliable mouse and you care primarily about design, get that" and I'd agree full heartedly.
    4. Mouse uniqueness - is that form comfortable to hold? Does the mouse flatten during use sometimes? Questions that stem from how special and different this product is.
    Subscribed. Want to see where you're going.

    Hey, dude! Thank you for the video, it was quite informative and I´d most probably buy this mouse very soon, thanks to that. I was not sure if it will be the thing for me, but seeing as how the scroll wheel on the ones I use always breaks down, no matter what brand I'm using, having a "trackpad-like" alternative instead, seems like a genius solution. And it seems that it handles well and it's sturdy enough as a whole. Cheers!

      Also, I just wanted to point this out because I made a mistake in the video. (See this video's pinned comment for more details.)
      This mouse actually DOES support the middle click button, after some back-end configurations. So actually, you CAN use this with CAD / CAE software; however, I still don't think that using this mouse makes for an optimal CAD / CAE experience, so the part of this review that says this mouse isn't for 3D modelers or professional creators still applies even though my info was slightly incorrect. 😂

      @EJYu  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello! Great question!
      So, this mouse IS pressure-sensitive, so to speak. However, the mouse only utilizes that pressure sensitivity for scrolling gestures. Unlike a trackpad, the Surface Arc Mouse can’t initiate a “tap to click” (hence why I refer to the upper part of the mouse as a “scroll plane” in the video, NOT a trackpad).
      In short, no, the mouse cannot click without a noise.

    What kind of stand are you using for the laptop?

    • @EJYu
      @EJYu  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hello, sorry for the late reply!
      The stand I'm using for my laptop is just a cooling pad (for laptops) with extendable rubber feet.
      I had this accessory since the Windows XP era, so I unfortunately don't remember exactly what the name of this product is (and I can't check since it's not branded).
      If you're looking for a laptop stand, some really nice ones that I've been really wanting to get are from Twelve South. Although their products are strictly advertised for Apple products only, I think you can still use them with Windows laptops―assuming that (1) you'll know the dimensions of your laptop to ensure that their stands will hold your laptop, and (2) you have a newer Windows laptop (something from Microsoft, Dell, or HP [for example] from 2017 and later). And if you have a MacBook, then Twelve South products would be perfect then! Haha! (But they are pretty pricey...)
      If you're looking for a cooling pad (for laptops) w/ extendable feet like mine, you can check Amazon or B&H Photo Video for those. I can't really give any recommendations since I don't always mount my laptop on cooling pads or external laptop fans. But I'm sure you could find something you'd like!

      So before I begin, allow me to establish a few terms:
      • When I say "the NEW Arc Mouse", I'm referring to the mouse in this video, which is called the Surface Arc Mouse.
      • When I say "the OLD Arc Mouse", I'm referring to the one you want me to compare the new one to, which is called the Arc Touch Bluetooth Mouse.
      Please notice how the names of the two products are different, regardless of their similarities.
      So hands-down, I like the new Arc Mouse a lot better, especially in terms of its design. I think it looks a lot more premium and feels much better in the hand. Not to mention, there are multiple colors other than light grey and (basically) dark gray, which are the two colors that the old Arc Mouse only comes in.
      But the reason why a lot of people like the old one better is because it has separated buttons and haptic feedback when using the scroll pane. At first, these might not sound like viable reasons for anyone to get the old Arc Mouse when the new one is obviously much more modern and built way better; however, these two characteristics of the old Arc Mouse actually make a big deal. Please see this comparison:
      New Arc Mouse: PROS
      • Modern design / very stylish
      • Built very well
      • Comes in MANY colors, including one (maybe two?) limited edition colors
      • Fully customizable, BUT only with the Microsoft Keyboard and Mouse Center application
      New Arc Mouse: CONS
      • Middle click button NOT ENABLED by default
      • Cannot left click AND right click at the same time
      • Scrolling w/ this mouse takes a while to get used to
      • Light gray variant of this mouse stains easily when rubbed against a fabric of any oversaturated color (usually happens when you put this mouse in a backpack with a colored interior)
      Old Arc Mouse: PROS
      • Traditional design, so you're already familiar with how to use everything (even with the scroll wheel being more like a "pane" than a "wheel" with this mouse as well)
      • You can left click and right click at the same time (but sometimes it's hard to pull off)
      • Surprisingly hard to stain, but still has the potential of staining since most of this mice is made out of plastic
      Old Arc Mouse: CONS
      • Kinda ugly in my opinion
      • The "sleeve" inflates with air over time, and that gets super annoying
      • The "sleeve" wears out in less than a year if you don't take care of it or clean it every week or so
      • You must have Windows 8, Windows 8.1, or Windows 10 to customize this mouse*
      (*) I've heard some sources say that you can still customize this mouse with some kind of first-party Microsoft mouse application that's still somewhere on the internet; but honestly, using Win32 apps to customize Microsoft's mice is so tedious to do in the first place. I mean, just finding what application you need to configure buttons in the first place is a hassle.
      SO THAT'S IT!
      I know it's a lot to read. A video would've been nicer, but I don't have time at the moment, and I don't want you to wait. :(
      I hope this helps!!
      ―E.J. Yu

    What is the difference between 'Surface Arc Mouse' (model GZV-0001) and 'Arc Mouse' (yeah, simply w/o 'Surface', model ELG-00013)?
    They look pretty simple: no buttons, touch screen only.

    • @EJYu
      @EJYu  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Nothing, honestly.
      The Microsoft Arc Mouse (not the Surface one) used to have a model with a different connectivity interface (USB dongle instead of Bluetooth), but that's been discontinued. (Was the same way with the MS / Surface mice's predecessors as well.) So as it stands at the moment, nothing's different. Usually with the "Microsoft" iteration of their PC accessories, there's something different but that's not the case with the Arc Mice in these new styles.

    Hi. I would like to know about the click's sound... How is it? Is it loud? Or maybe the click doesnt make any sound? Thanks!

    • @EJYu
      @EJYu  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hello! Good question! The click is definitely audible, but it's not ridiculously loud in my opinion. Although if, at any given point in time, you're constantly left clicking at a rapid speed and you're in a relatively quiet area, it's definitely going to catch your attention. (And maybe other people's attentions as well.)
      Short answer: The click sound is definitely audible, but it's not that loud and shouldn't make or break your decision to get this mouse.
      I hope that helps!

      Most likely you can. I used to use maya and you could not dolly the camera without left and right click at the same time. If the shortcut is the same in 3ds max then just don't get it. Try the logitech mx performance. It has a few extra buttons that really makes navigation a breeze.

    I have the old school arc mouse with the touch bar. Does it have the haptic feedback that the original mouse did? In the original one, a double tap on the touch bar acted as a middle click - does that not work on the new one?

    • @EJYu
      @EJYu  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I have the old one too. This new Surface Arc Mouse doesn't have any "haptic feedback" at all. Imagine a trackpad on a small, slim mouse: that's basically what this is.

  • @JamesRBentley
    @JamesRBentley 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I am not that impressed by this mouse. I've been using it for about 2 hours, the arc feels too high, and the clicker button too sensitive. If you just lightly rest your index finger on the front of the mouse it clicks. I feel like I have to excessively lift my wrist to use this mouse. Maybe I will get used to it, but it seems a case of style over substance.

    • @EJYu
      @EJYu  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey, that's a really good observation! I totally agree with you: this mouse definitely isn't going to be for everyone regardless of what I say about my positive experience in this video. (And I'm pretty sure that I qualified my statements in the video too.)
      It's definitely a case of style over substance. It just so happens that if the owner's hand fits the size of the mouse just right, then it'll be a good experience right out of the box; otherwise, the owner will have to spend quite some time getting used to this mouse.
      Thank you for watching; and also, thanks for your comment!! :)

The application needed to do this is only available on Windows, unfortunately. :(
