Microsoft showed off the Surface Arc Mouse in 2017 as a portable Bluetooth mouse to accompany their premium Surface devices. This was my dream mouse ever since I saw it for the first time at a Microsoft Store. Though the mouse is beautifully designed with an intuitive bendable form, it has only received mixed reviews and almost no hype surrounding the product. In fact, Microsoft has been showing off more of the Surface Mobile Mouse in their marketing instead of the Surface Arc Mouse. Why? Well, after revisiting this mouse, I think I know now. Check out the video to see why!

I have a couple thoughts about the Surface Arc Mouse. I have one, and I also own quite a few gaming mice. I've gotten used to the comfortable form factors and lovely support that having side buttons gives, however I can say safely that these two mice are in entirely different categories for entirely different reasons.
    1. Not all mice are gaming mice, not all gaming mice are portable mice. Portability means the ability to not have to deal with a trackpad when you're out and about, were space and lightweightness matters. The arc design allows the mouse to fit in a pocket and weighs slightly less than an apple magic mouse, and the rubber coating around it means I have no fear of putting it next to a phone. Portability wise, it can also fit in small bag compartments, which is also a significant upside. The gaming mice I have, I also have a carrying case with me so I don't have to worry about scratching or ruining the mouse, as well as keeping the cables managed. With the Arc Mouse this isn't a thing. While it's of course not as accurate as other mice you could get, that's not the reason for getting it. Anyone who does heavy photo editing, or something requiring lots of precision has portability as their last concern. This mouse is built for people who want to browse the internet, read some emails, and do productivity work like going through spreadsheets, for which it is great
    2. The scrolling. While the input lag on the scrolling is noticeable (Only for small movements oddly enough, big flicks are actually wonderful.) it is also not as finnicky as it may sound. The input lag on the scrolling doesn't appear to be because of the bluetooth, but appears to be a fault of the trackpad not wanting to pickup unwanted gestures in an inefficient manner, which means when you stop scrolling, it stops scrolling, which is the center of how controlled a mouse feels
    3. Build Quality. Anyone who says the mouse feels cheap doesn't seem to understand the idea of portability. The only thing that could feel cheap about it would be how tight the rubber is to the main body. Given how the rubber helps hide the hinges, I don't consider this to be an issue, I consider it to be part of what's needed to achieve the design.
    4. Compared to the Arc Touch, I feel like there are a few pros and cons of each mouse. While the Arc Touch mouse is lovely due to it's dedicated buttons (Which might I add, I do occasionally miss when I decide to play light light videogames with it because it's around), the buttons don't reach *all* the way to the end, which could prove to be a small issue. The scrolling is great, but a lack of horizontal scrolling isn't that great.
    5. Ergonomics. Don't hold this like a regular mouse, that's dumb, it's not a regular mouse. The way I decide to hold a mouse would be to hold the mouse up, and pretend I'm using it on a floating table. that leaves my thumb and ring finger on the sides of the mouse which give is support and control quite comfortably due to the arch. This is a mouse to Claw, it is not a mouse to palm. While you can palm it and it's fine, it's best used in a claw grip.
TL;DR every major issue with the mouse is a lot better when you put it in the context of "Right it's not a daily driver mouse." What you're really paying for is the ease of use and easy setup with swift pair, the intuitiveness of arcing the mouse to turn it on, and the satisfactory click that has turned the mouse from a pointing device to a 60-70 dollar fidget toy.

      @aragon5869 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

I am also obsessed with this mouse. As a college student and a sci-fi design junkie, the arc mouse is perfect. The bending on and off is next level. And when it's flat it fits so perfectly in the front pocket of the surface cases sold at the Microsoft store.
But in the first 2 minutes of using it at the store I realised it would strain my hand too much. I have a Logitech basic mouse and I grip the sides more than any part of the mouse to use it. Since the arc mouse is so flat I had to strain my fingers to grip the edges of it and even tho my hands are small for a dude. I was starting to cramp. It's not a bad idea at all. And if you are on the go constantly between the airport, the office, the coffee shop, the library, in class, I can see the arc mouse being invaluable in those instances where you sit for 15 min to an hour in one spot before having to pack up and move.
After watching this review however. I think I'll just use the track pad on my surface type cover and wait for Microsoft to fine tune the Arc mouse idea. Or come out with a new portable mouse. I think the arc mouse can be more comfortable if the angle of the arc was different and if the overall size was a tad bigger. If not overall bigger, just make it wider. Again love the design and the idea.

I have the Arc Touch Mouse myself, and based on what you're saying about this version of the product, perhaps you should look into the touch mouse yourself. Instead of a single trackpad, it has the more traditional 3 discrete button form-factor, with the middle-mouse button being replaced by a touchpad that works similarly to a traditional mouse-wheel. It's also about 20 bucks cheaper and can take a beating. Mine has taken spills onto concrete and has so far lasted me about 4 years. It's the same arc design, so it won't fix your ergonomics issues, but I've always seen portability and ergonomics as mutually exclusive engineering goals anyway.

There are a couple of other issues with the mouse.
    - When you bend the mouse, there are only two tiny, horizontal "pad" things that slide on the surface of your desk or mousepad. In the video, he's using a mouse pad and so he wouldn't have this problem, but if you are someone who just uses the mouse on your desk without a mousepad, you will find that the tiny surface that actually makes contact with the desk very quickly gets gunky, no matter how clean you keep your desk. Consequently, the mouse does not slide on your desktop, but starts to stick. Then, you have clean this gunk off the mouse with a coin or something to get it to slide again. This is very unpleasant.
    - It can be glitchy, which is evidently something to do with interference from your router, but there are alternative theories about why it's glitchy. Support might ask you to reinstall drivers, etc., and that may or may not help, but you know, this is the year 2022 and your mouse should just work, period. Personally, I think mine is getting interference from my headphones and my router, but who knows?

I love the mouse. It’s simple. It works. And it stashes well. PS:
Judging from the comments, it seems half the issue is that it’s not insanely accurate or specialized. I’m not sure it was made with high precision artists, gamers, or anything like that in mind. It works perfectly as a general mouse and especially for travel. It works well in a snap and on the go. It works just right for me as a lawyer who needs to travel to different courthouses, clerk offices, etc. PSS: I haven’t had to change the batteries and it’s been a year and a half. I’ve used it almost every day.

Nowhere for my thumb and pinky to go, so I’m constantly just hovering them out to the sides.
This makes for terrible cramps after just a few minutes, and also means that you have very little lateral control over the mouse.
There’s no sensation of ‘resting’ your hand on this mouse at all.
On top of this, it’s constantly trying to scroll when I’m just touching the buttons.
This will be my fastest store return ever!

I love the idea of a flat but bendable mouse. Give it more actual buttons and a scroll wheel, fix the arc, give it an optional wire, and why not lean into the design and push for it to be even thinner. This thing is perfect for super thin laptop bags.

You scroll by dragging both fingers on it. Works pretty well. The older ones had a scroll wheel (I have one of those ones) which I do like. It's technically a touch strip, but it gives off a little haptic rumble when you scroll so it feels nice and like you're actually physically scrolling

  • @Duraltia

Yeaa... At some point I too was considering this line of Mice for use with my SB2 for portability reasons but after testing it in a store I quickly came to the realization that, especially the Software, wasn't up to my expectations and the lack of additional buttons I _really_ frequently use wasn't helping either. Logitech Mice, and their Software, easily blew them out of the water.
Not surprising though... The Logitech, unique?, *Gesture Function* that can be bound to any button except the two primary ones is a game breaking feature I couldn't live with anymore. Being able to bind up to five virtual buttons to a physical one opens so many possibilities when it comes to browsing the web, navigating the OS, and organizing Windows across multiple screens it's just not funny anymore.

Your video and editing is very good, however regarding this mouse.... I had the original Arc Mouse, then the Arch Mouse Touch (RF) and then the Arc Mouse Surface Edition (Bluetooth)... the first one (bendable inwards into a tiny ball) was stolen from my at university, the second one lasted me about 6 years through the end of university, and several work offices, but the last one I bought (the Bluetooth one) which was the previous design to this model you are reviewing, only lasted me a little over a year before dying on me (some sort of short circuit inside) and the quality was noticeably worse than the previous ones... specially the grey version which became an ugly stained mess in about a month of use.... I never had any issues with the form factor as I got used to the "Claw Grip" basically required for this type of mice, but the back of the design of the newest mouse (what you are reviewing) was made symmetrical instead of the narrower "tail" it used to have making it uncomfortable for my palm, but the biggest let down is that there is no way to use a Middle Click and Move which is essential for most 3D modeling software and manipulation...
Fast forward today, I ended up buying the cheaper / uglier Microsoft Sculpt Comfort mouse, and I love it... even the side touch button is awesome to customize and turn it into something productive. I do miss the portability of the Arc series, but I can live with that, my Surface Book carrying case has enough space for the mouse and even the 100Watt Power Adapter.

I don't know how long you used the old version, but on mine, that scroll wheel you love so much , began to malfunction after a few years, which is why they changed it. So far, I find this version to be a definite improvement, because of that issue.

The surface arc mouse v1 I substantially better. I used it for nearly 2 years until it eventually died. It has separate left and right click buttons (the biggest problem with the new one as you can't rest your fingers on it)
And has a haptic feedback touch scroll bar which is night and day better than the new one
I have the new one as well. Used it for a couple months then decided to get the regular surface mouse and never looked back
It isn't much thicker than this but has a traditional button layout that is much more comfortable for longer sessions and can be used for gaming
Arc mouse you can't aim (right click) and shoot at the same time (left click) as there is only one mouse button
Major oversight. Again didn't have this on the Gen 1 version. Btw the gen 1 came in a wireless usb and a bluetooth version so if you are looking for it the bluetooth one is part of the surface brand and worked great

It takes a few days to get used to the finger position.
I'm using the older model, with the middle strip.
I love everything about this thing, besides the middle strip, sometimes it has feedback, sometimes it doesn't, but the double tap is the weirdest...
At least the middle button works though which is a must for anybody working in any graphical industry.
So even though I would never want to go to the old clunky style mouse after falling head over heels for this super sleek battery saver, I cannot understand what's up with the new one and the 3 finger middle mouse.
Who thought this was a good idea?
If anyone at MS hardware ever sees this, please, do something good about the middle mouse.
Oh and while you are at it, the surface pen needs TWO side buttons.... not one TWO :)
There are reasons good the other brands have it, in fact I would include a scroll wheel on a surface pen 'PRO'.

I agree with just about everything said in this video. I got a surface arc mouse with my surface pro 7 thinking it looked interesting. While it does look nice and fit anywhere, using it isn't as practical as any other mouse I've used before. The shape of the mouse in your hand is awkward to move, and the right click is still annoying after getting used to it. Unfortunately, I fully regret purchasing the surface arc mouse. I'll continue to use my much cheaper and better logitech gaming mouse.
