      @@MontyMotorsport Oh absolutely! My wife and I drove 4 hours to Philadelphia to see McLaren F1 LM chassis #2 and being 32 years old, I cried when I saw it. My 7 year old nephew asked me when we came back why I cried. Well, 1. My wife searched for one for me for years to see and she loves me enough to locate this F1 LM...she loved it too she painted her toes papaya orange LOL and 2. He thought I cried cause it's rare...no, I cried because, as a mechanic of 15 years and a car enthusiasts my whole life, I met my "hero.

      Mark Merola Great to read about your passion for the F1, you got the McLaren F1 fever as well! I was lucky enough to see the GTR's race in the UK on 6 occasions from 95 to 98, I've posted photos I took at the time on my "montykernow" Instagram. Back in 1995 I remember when I first saw the McLaren GTR. Far and away - the most beautiful car I have ever seen. Watching this video, I still feel the same. Nothing has the soul of this car. The body is so perfect. The wedge profile is simply gorgeous. The face of the car is a study in aggression and pure beauty. Everything about this car is so exciting. I can only imagine what this Harrods GTR is worth today... McLaren came close on the beauty scale with the P1 GT, but it still doesn't have something that the GTR does.

    • @ErwinSchrodinger64
      @ErwinSchrodinger64 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      What do you mean when it was king? How many naturally aspirated sport cars can beat it today with it's top speed. Even in today's markets, a 0-60 of 3.2seconds is no easy feat.

    • @overtorque
      @overtorque 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@ErwinSchrodinger64 agreed. This car has 627hp from the factory and accomplished 60mph in 3.2 seconds (the closest they could get to 60mph because the car was so fast and no traction control) 100mph in 5.9 seconds and onward to a top speed of 243mph (rev limiter adjusted). The Veyon has 4 turbos and 4 extra cylinders and proof from "Top Gear" (Season 13, Episode 2) the McLaren sure as hell gave that Bugatti a fight. Take away those 4 turbos from that overpriced VW and it has nothing on the F1.

    • @NuclearHeadshot
      @NuclearHeadshot 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@overtorque Well, turbo engines and naturally aspirated engines are built to completely different specifications, of course a turbo engine will be shit without the turbos. It's a core feature of the engine, not a sticker that miraculously adds performance. ("take away that suit, what are you?") The Veyron and F1 are also built to an entirely different philosophy. The F1 has nothing to the Veyrons comfort, period. The F1 is a racecar, barely road legal and the Veyron is a luxury car with insane statistical performance.
      I ain't being a fanboy, I'd take one single F1 over 10 Veyrons. I'm simply saying it's stupid to compare two very different cars with very different approaches, and even more so when taking away features from only one part.

  • @samsonian
    @samsonian 6 ปีที่แล้ว +34

    I’ve always loved documentaries that are very candid and not painted a certain way; one of the things about high-level racing of any kind you don’t need to write a script. It’s already exciting and suspenseful without planning anything. Most of all, I love the little comedic moments hidden in the hustle and bustle of qualifying then preparing the final bits for the race and everyone taking a deep breath and get ready to take the plunge. Here is one some may have missed:
    @41:08 Member of a competitor’s team: “So basically the car was complete shit...”
    Member of the Harrod’s team: “Today...today it’s fine.”
    Pretty much sums up most any race for any team. What makes it funny is obviously the member of the Harrod’s team would never say that to an outsider if the car’s problems hadn’t been sorted (if he wanted to keep his job; it’s a very small world in top-level racing) but since they fixed the problem it becomes a passing comment; almost a non sequitur as it can apply to any team at any given race.
    The only thing I wish was different is I think it would have made a good miniseries; it’s a compelling story especially about a car that is not very far from its production version in GTR trim. Also, the drivers and team manager as well as Moody Fayed are interesting characters and it was really a once-in-a-lifetime chance; as McLaren F1s are not vehicles that are cost-effective to race.
    Thanks for posting this, a great show!

    • @poplaurentiu4148

      The problem was the car felt un-balanced because it didn't felt well entering in corners the steering became very light and uncontrollable both pilots were struggle to fight to keep the car in corners so initially mechanics thought the ground effect on the car was not working well but pilots say the car is very stable in cornering but it was like in it's own path they fight hard in the sense they would must slower quicker before entering the corners in order to keep the car on the track but that mean they were loosing 'acres of precious time' as they mentioned. So first thing they really did right since were 2 McLaren cars (each on one team Harrods and West and for each team 2 driver-pilots.. (So Harrods who had this bad issue disqus 'ed with the West team pilots and what they did first is to copy all settings from West car team, so then with the settings replaced the car improved a bit but they still got that water leak and only after they dismantled the engine and found & sorted the water leak Bell pilot from the Harrods team also requested the front shocks replacement and that was the moment when he felt the car behavior changed dramatically and pilot was able to gain from 9 up to 5 but also they were told since they used harder compound tires specially for the front that could also affect the cars turn so, after the replacement on softer compound car became even more controllable and they could push the car harder with much more confidence..

      My understanding is that the understeer at high speed corners was due to imbalance of down force between front and rear, and which is why during the 2nd stop in the race, they cut portions of the rear wing to reduce rear down force and in turn provide a little more grip to the front and help cure the understeer.

      @@turdferguson3803 The BMW’s had the SAME 6.1L motor, same chassis, same gearbox, brakes etc. The lightweight CLK’s and the new M119 based motors were clearly quicker overall. Not having BMW factory support doesn’t make them slower than previous year? It’s the same car albeit not updated.
