I am no pianist nor was I raised on classical music. It was all folk and country. When I first discovered classical music (Beethoven's 5th Symphony conducted by Leopold Stokowski) I discovered a joy I had never known. I am not educated in classical music and I listen to enjoy it. If you are putting this kid down due to some snobbery I am unaware of that's cool. I will say that I enjoyed the video. VERY MUCH.
His Bach playing shows a solid sense of architecture, added with a superb clarity in which one can hear the left and right hand as individual voices. I've never heard of this Jan Lisiecki but his musicianship is worth a second look when he played Chopin's etudes. Again, with his Chopin playing, there is a clarity of the left and right hand, along with excellent pedalling, and his unemoting characteristic. He has an affinity for Chopin's music. His height and stature helped him play robustly, I believe. This is a superb pianist. Canada has produced a world genius pianist in Glenn Gould. This Lisiecki may be its next shinning star.

Jan Lisiecki is the best! He transmits feeling and sentiment in each performance. I have been following him for several years and I like him more everytime. He is reaching for the top!!
There are always the naysayers that have to tear people down but this young man has more talent than most of us could ever dream of having. I wish him the very best. If you don't like his style go somewhere else or do you have to say something just to make you feel important.

The Bach is phenomenal - beautifullly played, at just the right tempi and percussiveness to define the musical line. His interpretation is totally without harshness or pedantry.
I love Mr. Lisiecki's *beautiful* reading of the J.S. Bach Partita No. 1 in B-flat major BWV 825, played with a sparkling transparent sound, wonderful balance and rhythmic energy. I decided to do a side by side comparison of it with Glenn Gould's recording of this piece and was very impressed! For those people living in NYC, Mr. Lisiecki will perform on 26 Feb. 2017 with the London Philharmonic Orchestra. I'm convinced that he'll be among the most famous of the 21st century. Be among the lucky people who can claim "I saw him in person."
This is insane... playing a whole opus of Chopin's etudes, all of which are incredibly difficult, not just in front of a live audience, but with cameras trained on you, recording the whole thing for everyone to watch and analyse every nuance of phrasing and every little mistake for the rest of time... all in one take. To perform this well under such pressure, with just one chance to get it right... I have trouble enough playing if someone walks past my door and can hear me

I disagree with your conclusion, because I disagree with your false premise. First in such cases much more often than not a burning desire to find fault. Second is an urgency to disregard anything positive. Third is a particular type of narcissism that professionals call "malignant". It can be helped but not cured. This is not an international competition. It is the presentation of an interpretation by the performer for the enjoyment of his audience. Interpretations have many potential influences, from the condition of the instrument at the time of playing as a canvas for the artist to use to present to the listener, to the time of day, to the condition of the artist at the time of performance in several aspects. If it is on TH-cam, unless it is being live streamed, it is history. I happen to enjoy this artist's work immensely, but can be his harshest critic when I think the situation of the moment demands it. I expect his presentations to authentic, and accurate to HIS interpretation, not mine. I have positive expectations, and appreciate his efforts. Yet, you will not see (generally) any critique from me here at all. I am a listener in these instances, not a fellow artist, conductor or adjudicator. For some, that is just an impossible perspective to address the work from. I cannot say I definitively know why, but I can surely tell it when I read comments. No Chopin music ever has been played on the UTube by anyone with such genius for total lack of sense of connection with the inherent Chopin idiom, spirit and style. For the Chopin etudes, this is as bad as it gets, find me something worse than this, I will pay you real money, because it is real hard, real hard to find.
He is only 17 years old, give him a break. He has not yet experienced the peaks and valleys of life. When he does, I am sure his playing will be much more eloquent emotionally.

This is soulless playing from someone with little understanding of Bach or Chopin. This performance would not have gotten him past Stage 1 of any major international competitions. There is nothing compelling anywhere in the musical line or phrasing. In many places the rhythm is careless. I don't necessarily think it's an issue of youth - that ten years on he's going to have developed an understanding of what musicality is. There's just not enough natural talent there to build on. At age 19 you would be able to hear the musicianship in someone's fingers even if the maturity level wasn't there. It is also not a "clean" performance - there are no big gaffes, but a lot of little fudges, notes not hit cleanly. It will be interesting to see how long the promotional machine can keep his career going, as now it's a bit of "the emperor's new clothes."

Van Cliburn performed with mistakes too. But when it comes to interpretation, there's no mistake.

Obviously you don't understand music, he doesn't have soulless playing. From just listening you can here the skill the love the respect for the music and piano, every small thing affects a pianist playing, going from weather to how you woke up. If he truly plays without a soul, then tell me why do composers respect and want to work with him, it is because he understands and loves the piano! If you look, he is sweating because he is so into the music.
Yes, sweating is obviously a sign of great talent, rather than the body's natural way of cooling itself.
