Maestro Gulda translated music to the audience. No matter what they might have call him. A musician who only can perform Bach, Beethoven or Mozart. But furthermore he played jazz on a pretty high level and also he was a great composer. Always in love with the music , open minded and looking forward! What a great artist!

Sheer joy. A master having a good time: exuberant, passionate, funny, poignant, self ironic, and I think Beethoven would have loved this man and this concert.

I guarantee you when Gulda is playing, what people think are accidental wrong notes are very much intentional and a result of his unique artistry.

Most pianists get really involved in what they play, and that is important. Gulda is almost unique, his mind seems to be elsewhere, even day dreaming, with his playing a sideline. Yet the playing is superb. These pieces must take years to master.

Freude beim Musizieren zuzusehen.

Honestly probably the best interpretation of this beautiful concerto that I have seen.
Doesn't matter that he plays a few notes wrong. The piece is meant to be JOYFUL. Its meant to have EXUBERANCE!
So many interpretations I have listened to miss this in my opinion. Friedrich absolustely nails this interpretation.
I mean, listen to this extract at 12:48. Even at Beethoven's most struggling moments in his life, he was able to write with such joy and Friedrich captures this perfectly!

Gordon Stainforth hahahahaha yes ... and also Beethoven as a living character!!! I love the forward momentum that shows how troubled he is and doesn’t understand what’s happening, because of his feeling of isolation from the world. But Beethoven’s humour tells me how he’s looking back on his past and his fantasy of freedom for life, it’s so astonishing how it translates into his music!!!

Hi, Gordon! Long time no see! Hope you are well and busy in these difficult times. We wrote each other years ago on the Kubrick Multimedia regarding all the many great works used in his films over the years. I recall stating that it would be nice to hear Shostakovich in his music sometime. Funny thing, the Waltz #2 turned up in his very last masterpiece. Thank you, Gordon! Since 2001, I've been slowly working on the 9/11 Requiem (one movement was performed in Bremerton in 2002) as well as teaching music and completing a western rock opera. Be well.

I like how the last movement „grooves“ like an actual Rondo/dance. It doesn’t sound as stiff as I’ve often heard it from other performers. Maybe that’s because of Gulda‘s experience with jazz.

The 5th is one of my favorites. You can argue that this performance lacks perfection of technique but Mr. Gulda's has an enormous quantity of charisma. His seeming pleasure translates into a feeling that I would hope that even Beethoven aspired to.

Brilliant performance played with Gusto and with an orchestra second to none. The Tympani is exceptional and at times pulses this piece along the way Beethoven would want I'm sure. A couple of hiccups, but overall , just a beautifully done concerto. Gulda is a confident and enthusiastic artist. I also enjoy his playing of Mozart concerto's as well

Look at his face to see his profound involvement w/the entire work, perhaps most especially from 25.30 onward. Performed & recorded at the height of his powers & resources, this is a wonderful opportunity to witness what rarely comes into any of our lives: a master at his highest & best. Bravo on his cadenzi as well. This has now surpassed my previous favourite, Daniel Barenboim w/Otto Klemperer, albeit not a sparkling performance, but to honour Klemperer.

Truly a grand performance: Gulda's interpretation is straightforward, but plenty of attention to the trills and transitions inside the 1st movement.
And what a movement it is! Its length is more than half that of the entire concerto, but that authoritarian mode befits it, in that I see Herr Beethoven's propose here. He's declared the pianoforte concerto era has yielded to the symphonic projection of musical ideas at the heart of the composer's intents.
As the piano is the most comprehensive of all musical instruments, so it now becomes the voice of the total effort orchestras are to achieve.
It may be my new hearing aids, but the piano sounds as if it's not a Steinway, but perhaps a Fazioli? It may be it's tuning. Just me. I dearly love Gulda, his many insights and superb interpretation. He's always 5 stars! ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

he cared about nothing but music. No importance in dressing code, having a conductor, or any other rule. He wanted the score there and he had the score there. He wanted to look the audience in the eyes and he did it. Wish there were more pianists like him with the courage to break the unnecessary and obsolete rules.

Gulda's wristwatch is indeed a powerful magnet - my eyes clapped onto it, as well. It's got to really be a Rolex or an Omega. Very impressive indeed.
      RIP Gulda.
