    Looking really good.
    One point you maybe could consider is the following. Letting the player choose between security (save point) and ability usage will lead to players never using your abilities (see for example Hollow Knight, Healing vs Spells). Players will always be cautious and will not spend the resources.
    Again game looking awesome and your animation is beautiful.

    It's refreshing a game with the same charming, light-hearted vibe and aesthetic that MediEvil had. Most metroidvanias and side-scrollers go full grimdark when combining medieval and spooky themes, and while I like those as well, it's nice to have something less serious that pursues that youthful Halloween nostalgia feeling instead. Will definitely wishlist on Steam!

    Lmao that ending. You could just say something like "thank you for watching this devlog, hope to see you in the next" Aside from that, the stamina mechanic is a little bit concerning to me, I won't lie. But I trust the design will be built around it. My only concern is when there are a lot of enemies you get into a tight spot from attacking a lot. Thanks for the devlog

    • @officialgrimwaregamesllc
      @officialgrimwaregamesllc  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Nothing really to be concerned about, but its all about how you play the game, If you're playing Dark Souls and you recklessly run into a room and aggro everyone, you're gonna get wrecked, no matter how much stamina you got. Its about moving and shooting with strategy.

    • @mattb8075
      @mattb8075 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@officialgrimwaregamesllc that's a good point. As long as you don't run out of "stamina" when hitting all your shots and playing deliberately, it shouldn't really be a problem.

    Your game looks fantastic! Immediately I get that nostalgic appeal and overall colorful and stylized look like in ps2/ps3 games.
    The only thing that I feel is worth doing a little differently from my point of view is the main character look. It's already good so if you don't feel like changing him that's totally fine.
    I'd recommend making him leaner (thinner) and with a bit more personality visible from a distance. At the moment he looks too bulky and resembles just a ball of muscles rolling over the level.
    A good reference would be Dead Cells main character. Something in these proportions.
    Shovel night has his shovel and horned helmet, dead cells has the strange looking head. Your character has a bright pony tail and a dark face with bright eyes. I'd say make them a lot more bigger. The hair can be longer and follow the player procedurally like in Celeste. The larger head with bigger eyes would easier convey emotions and expressions.

    As a fellow indiedev struggling to release anything (too many ideas) this video was very interesting, mostly because of obvious your game isn't a straight up copy but you have your own thing going and seemingly able to see the end of the game that you can release.

    • @officialgrimwaregamesllc
      @officialgrimwaregamesllc  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      I'm of the opinion that games are art, you can be inspired by someone or something, but just copying someone's art without having your own spin on it or your own voice often leads to a feeling of hollowness or emptiness, because a lot of it is lived experience and are inspired by different things.
      How many "souls-like" clones out there? Tons, the ones that stand out have their own spin and their identity. Finding your niche or creating it often helps as well.
      Then again its not like I'm some bigshot success story either so, grain of salt.

      Yeah GNG is an interesting one. Super GNG for SNES is the first game I've ever played, so my perception of difficulty is skewed. But I will say GNG resurrection, I had a hard time with with a lot of enemies spawning right beneath me. Which I try not to do. It is a lot of memorization, in a way kinda reminds me of hard mode in guitar hero or something, where after a while you just get into a flow-state. At least from my own experience

    Can you do a devlog how you approach world building from greyboxing to "final" piece? I think this also is something people would love to see as there is not much information around web how to do it properly. And from what we see in your game I think you really nailed it!
    I love these devlogs keep em coming!

    • @officialgrimwaregamesllc
      @officialgrimwaregamesllc  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      For sure, that sounds good, though I'd say you already know how to do this. Your channel is filled with handpainted texture assets and levels you've made. Its basically that, but you mess around with gray cubes until the the level feels fun with the enemy theme. Like "is this lava level fun, even though there's no lava here and its all gray cubes" If so Proceed to the art-part of it
      I think there's probably tons of breakdowns of games that have this - Check out some of the GDC videos on like Uncharted Environments or other post mortems - I think there's also tutorials on The Gnomon Workshop about environment creation

The characters are well designed for animating and are in full 3D (thank you for not using the pixel art trope).

    the game is shaping up nicely, and I'm very much looking forward to seeing everything come together!
    i'm wondering if there's a better place to put the stamina/energy bar; you'll be needing to constantly keep an eye on it during combat, so maybe having it somewhere closer to your character would be ideal.

      @@officialgrimwaregamesllcMaybe you could make the blue, spectral parts of ghost knight represent the stamina, kinda like in Celeste where, when you’re out of dashes, her hair changes color. Knight’s could go to blue to black And maybe the blue would slowly fade and lose its shine as you continued to lose stamina. Just a suggestion, do whatever you think is best.

    • @officialgrimwaregamesllc
      @officialgrimwaregamesllc  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I have done my best with all that, UE4 doesn't load backfaces of objects by default, unless the shader has "double sided" enabled, I'm keeping things as efficient. Unless you mean "I hope you deleted the backfaces of the objects" in which case, there are a lot of cards in the background that look 3D - keeping it pretty low poly - and its a side-scroller the biggest polycount is on the characters if anything. I've tested on 1080 Ti and RTX 3090 so far I'm getting about 90-120FPS but not really dipping below 60, but I may need to further test on ancient hardware lol

    • @officialgrimwaregamesllc
      @officialgrimwaregamesllc  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      My experience was mostly just 3D Environment art, no characters, no rigging animation experience, no vfx, no audio-production experience, all that I learned from youtube/artstation/gumroad tutorials and practice throughout the years.
      I have been a professional 3D Environment artist since 2012, worked on CoD: Advanced warfare, a bit on Ghost of Tsushima and a canceled Sony title, and did about a year and a half at Microsoft working on a VR app, but I got into learning Unreal Engine 4 in 2015, doing smaller little projects to learn the engine. Until I was ready to strike it out on my own.
