I remember this show! Otis Redding hosted that night because Hoss Allen was told his show was being canceled he got so intoxicated and passed out Otis had to host. Love me some Otis Redding he should've had his own show great host. R.I.P Otis and to all of the the singers that has passed on from this show.

Yes , the show was Hoss Allen's dream . He had a drinking problem and was a bit tipsy on several of the shows . The show was sold to individual TV stations and was refused by many stations for reasons known to anyone who knows history . Hoss did realize his dream , if only for a short while . Hoss , may you rest in eternal peace and thank you for the wonderful gift you left to us all.

This is so mind blowing. I’m amazed this show isn’t considered a total gem, thank god for the internet otherwise stuff like this would fade into obscurity.
My heart goes out to Otis who enthusiastically hosted this final episode of the show after Hoss Allen couldn’t on the count of being so distraught from the show being cancelled (he drank himself into a stooper the night before). Thanks to him for even making this possible

@@rachelcummings2705 Percy Sledge toured South africa, about 1969, for the first time. This was at the height of the apartheid days. He played in a coloureds only theater in Cape town. Only coloured people allowed in the theater. He was a huge star in SA, amongst all races. White people smeared their faces with black shoe polish to get in. Strange story, but it's true. Two yrs later the government gave permission for him to play in a whites only theater. Another strange story, obviously only white people allowed in then. Roy b, Cape Town, South africa.

Sadly, this dynamite show was The !!!!Beat's last. According to his Wikipedia bio, Bill "Hoss" Allen was so distraught over the show's cancellation he got too drunk to host, so Otis Redding stepped in. This classic musical showcase matches the equally iconic Shindig! and these online streamings and DVD recordings thankfully preserve the truly fantastic popular music explosion of the '60s.

EVEN THE LAST FOUR TAPS with his right foot was EXACT, at 21:03, and, 21:04. That's the mark of a true professional, who knows about music. Dave is the one who comes out last, of the duet.

This show strikes me as Shindig but for black r&b and soul artists. In 1965 or 66 the Stax/Volt package came to Britain and Otis Redding played a one-off gig at a basement club with a low ceiling underneath London's Oxford Street called Tiles. I managed to blag my way in and remembered it partly because it had pretty much perfect sound balance in the days when just about every other gig you attended had crap sound. Especially when you consider that Otis carried a big horn section and the sound could easily have been mushy. I too couldn't believe how many great voices were around then who didn't perhaps get the recognition they deserved. Did any of these artists get picked up later by the Northern Soul movements?

recordguy4321 Clarence 'Gatemouth' Brown was a Blues Music Legend !! He had already recorded for the Peacock Label through the 50's. By 1965 he was working with producer William 'Hoss' Allen, and recorded a single for Hit Sound Records, another for Hermitage and an Album for Chess Records, all featuring the band that would later appear on The !!!! Beat. Gatemouth went to Europe for the first time in 1971 and was an instant success. Since then has recorded for Alligator, Rounder, Gitanes and many other major and Indie labels. Sadly died back in 2005. Thanks so much for watching and the kind comments.

Just discovered you last week. LOVE The !!!! Beat shows & so grateful for you uploading them.
Here in the UK, much of this music is still loved & danced to each weekend on the Northern Soul scene, so seeing it live like this is a huge treat for us. ❤

There is a clip on TH-cam of Sam and Dave singing "Hold On I'm Coming" on The !!! Beat (wearing the same reddish orange suits, but with the colors washed out compared to the beautiful colors here), but it is not shown on this video. Was that performance an outtake? It was awesome. Would have been nice to see it with the vibrant colors of this series intact. The production quality of this series was first-rate.

Hello Shawn, I'm going to have a look at the dvd set later and check the listings. Some shows were blocked by yt for copyrights so may be on one of those? will get back to you :)

It appears there were quite a few outtakes made from this episode that do not appear on the DVD set. I've seen footage of Otis lip synching some tunes on the show's set, and on a documentary the BBC did about "Deep Soul" they show a very short snippet of James Carr(!) on the show's set, being backed by Otis's band. I hadn't heard about the Sam & Dave stuff, but I wouldn't be surprised. As for production quality, the funny thing is that the show was taped in Dallas despite Hoss Allen being based in Nashville, because there were no TV studios in Nashville equipped for color broadcasts in 1966!

It's also clear that the show was put together from multiple segments: note that Otis appears in three different outfits, and at the end, neither Garnet Mimms nor Percy Sledge are around, and Mitty Collier has on a different outfit! LOL (Gotta love continuity errors.)

Last show :-( What a lineup for the grand finale! Otis Redding had to host the whole thing because the Hossman just couldn't do it.

"Twistin' the Night AWay" should have been slowed down so the lead singer Louis could do this thing! Damn they were speeding though it!

Have to add this! I've always wondered what the hell Mr. and Mrs. Sledge were thinking hen they named him Percy???!!! When a Man Loves a Woman hit the charts "stage names" were still common, and one print commentator remarked "Percy Sledge has to be his real name!"

I love Mr. Percy Sledges hairstyle. Kind of looks like Jimmy Ruffins from that time. When I here "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" it makes me think of Otis, at home with the Heavenly Father.
