A proper rework is important but what bretonnia absolutely needs is new units rn. They have the smallest roster in the game bar none. Only a DLC can fix that
As for what I would personally want, there's quite a few things. (Do note that I don't ask for everything. Just pick and chose what you like)
    -a basic ballista
-herrimaults (ranger type unit with stalk: think dark elves shades without the armor piercing) and possibly a mounted variant
-Long bows (I know the peasant bowmen already wield long bows, but whatever, we basically just need a higher tier bow unit with better morale and a tad more armor piercing)
-peasant mobs variants (how about one with torches and one with pitchforks)
-Pegasus mount option for the damsels
-more lores of magic (especially lore of light)
-foot knights (ideally hermit knights, virtue of empathy with halberds)
-a better variant of the grail reliquae (think dark elves' cauldron of blood or skaven's Screaming Bell) ideally also available as a mount option for prophetesses (call it grail shrine or something)
-a hounds unit (Bretonnia had the truffle hounds in the lore: basically a regular hound unit with frenzy)
-the "sons of Bretonnia" (depending on the interpretation of the lore they could function like the dark elves' Doomfire Warlocks
    - "Spirits of the fey": an ethereal cav unit functioning like the vampire counts' hexwraiths)
-a "faceless" hero (possibly even lord option): themed after the herrimaults and functioning like the Empire's Huntsman General
-grail knights mounted on "questing beasts" (functions like the Empire's Demigryph Knights with halberds)
-deployable "stakes" for peasant bowmen (this one one however might be complicated to implement)
    -shielded variant for foot squires
-and now if you really want to get creative there's a few possibilities: you could have giant snails riders (lore accurate) functioning like the Vampire Coast's Rotting Prometheans (maybe with some sort of "slime" ability decreasing some stats like maybe speed, melee defense or leadership)
-Or maybe a single entity monster. That one doesn't appear in the lore, but if you allow CA to expand on it (the way they did with Cylostra) a cool idea would be to make a nod to French popular mythology. They have the Tarasque for example (not the T-Rex looking one from D&D): a dragon turtle with a scorpion tail that was magically tamed by a nun: can you think of a better thematic fit? You could make it work like a stegadon of bastiladon with poison attack, with a feral variant and a weapon platform variant for a ballista, possibly even as a mount option for the damsels).

Thoughts on giving the Bretonnian knights something like the Greenskin 'Scrap' mechanic. Called something else of course, like 'Honors' or 'Deeds'. Allowing players to customise all those knight units that are going to be filling their armies at least a little bit (with more than 3 options per unit cause otherwise no real point). Which then encourages giving the units actual names so you can better remember who has what upgrades.

It's always seemed like a silly-easy solution to making each LL within a race feel more unique from one another, rather than invent whole new mechanics that may or may not end up good. Skrolk with plagues is an obvious one, but give Queek something similar to Eltharion's Warden system and call it his Trophy Rack. Give Malekith some bonuses for holding/defending the watchtowers similar to Miao Ying and the Great Bastion, while Morathi gets something to manipulate factions and turn them against one another.

I think Bretonnia and the Empire could be differentiated a bit if Karl franz' empire mechanic was expanded into all the nearby human lands south of the Empire, so Estalia, Tilea, Border Princes. Essentially competing to unite humanity (and deciding between military or diplomatic actions to do so ). That way it'd be about more than just uniting the Empire or Bretonnia, but also spreading their influence to nearby human lands and getting new bonuses and maybe units for it.

Add the Red duke into Bretonnia. You don't even need to give him vampiric units, just give him the revive mechanic where after a battle he can instantly bring back certain units back with money. And reviewed units would get an attribute that makes them undead and lower their speed a little or something like that. You wouldn't even need too many model changes as knights are pretty armored up, just change their animation a bit and give them slightly glowing eyes and you're golden. The peasants can just come back as skeletons or ghouls.

I like the Crusade/errantry war idea from the greenskins WAAGH! mechanic. My thought is that rather that you would spend the Chivalry that you acquire to start the crusade by either selecting a province rather than a single settlement and you would then have a time limit to capture all settlements within a province and hold said province for a period of time. Doing so would reward you back the chivalry you spent plus interest and other bonuses (growth, control, replenishment, income boost, etc) there would be a cooldown of 10-20 turns (depending on research tree tech) before you could declare another crusade. During the period of the crusade all your armies would have an extra attached army filled with random units that join your banners upon the lady's will with each Legendary lord having a greater chance for particular units (the Fay Enchantress having better chance of Grail Knights). Another benefit would be during this period is since your nation is filled with spiritual fervor all Peasant units are Free of Upkeep and do not count towards your peasant economy while noble units are reduced upkeep to prevent you from bankrupting your empire/kingdom and preventing the issues that arises from having more peasants in your army than allowed.

For Leon a feudal mechanic would be cool, where he has to both appease the nobles, but manage to be strong enough to impose your rule.
A mechanic that manages two values:
    Power projection:
It measures how much more powerful you are than your "vassals".
    Loyalty:
It measures how much your "vassals" like you, individual for each. (Maybe all the LL could be included)
All the other brettonian factions will be considered vassals.
They will be free, but they have to pay you money and you can force them to join your wars.
When your vassals are loyal enough you will be able to confederate, however they may break free if it lowers enough.
    Your loyalty will lower when:
You are not strong enough to impose your power as the king, you raise their payments, if you force them into a war, by events, if you dont defend them from attacks and if you hold their "rightful territory".
    It will improve when:
You lower their payments (keep in mind that with less money you will build less power), you join their wars (even better if it's a war they declared), by events, by winning a war, by being powerful and if you return their lands.
Also, have a big negative economic modifier early on, so you depend mostly on your payments, so they hold more "power" over you. The true feudal experience.
(They have a positive modifier so they don't bankrupt.)

A Questing Beast is a Legendary 4/4 creature for 2GG with Vigilance, Deathtouch and Haste, can't be blocked by creatures with power 2 or less, that stops combat damage from your creatures from being prevented and who deals damage to enemy Plansewalkers whenever it hits an opponent.

Even with buffs from the tech tree your melee infantry break in seconds due to them having crap leadership against literally anything that’s better than skeletons. • @raitoiro
      @raitoiro หลายเดือนก่อน +3

Peasants are limited because fighting peasants don't tend to the fields, that's why it's not a hard cap and instead you get large economic maluses.
Whereas, the knights aren't limited because Bretonia has a tone of them and war is their purpose so them going to battle doesn't affect society (in fact getting something to occupy the young questing knight is more of a positive).
They could put a cap on Grail Knights since those are supposed to be really limited in numbers, but it would also make the faction less fun to play so it's probably a bad idea.

    • @nanonano2595

@@raitoiro doesnt change that its really silly mechanically in-game since peasant armies, by the time you can get a ton of them, are useless and will lose 2v1 to most AI lategame armies. Meanwhile, in the early game, when you actually could use a lot of peasant armies, you can't. I can see a potential problem where infinite armies of peasant mobs overrun the world...but just add a upkeep cost to peasant mobs and it should solve itself.
As it stands, i'm constantly in a position where lategame my peasant cap is something like 10/300 and i'm just running around with full stacks of knight errants and kotrs for cheap utility armies and grail guardians for the actual armies, literally no reason to use peasants, they trade so poorly and are a waste of upkeep/unit slot on top of bretonnia already being rich enough to not need to use cheap peasants.

    • @raitoiro
      @raitoiro หลายเดือนก่อน

@@nanonano2595 Why are you making peasants army to begin with?
Bretonia is very explicitly a cavalry focused faction, the infantry is just here to hold the line long enough for the cavalry to strike or defend the archers/artillery.
Your comment literally shows that the mechanic works as intended:
Early game it prevents player from overrunning their opponents with peasant spam, while pushing them to use knight. And late game it's not as limiting, so that it doesn't annoy players just trying to get trebuchets for their armies.
It also just make sense outside of game mechanics, a fledgling kingdom doesn't have many peasants and must be careful when managing their economic and military needs, while an established kingdom has a larger population and can afford to send more men to war.

    - Bretonian Hunters. Similar to prior unit. Could even be alternate interpretation. But could also do it as either a Spear or axe unit with stalk.
    - Bring the Spikes back as a toggle for peasants to put down once in battle.
    - My craziest and least likely idea: Ogre Squires. Essentially Ogre Maneaters of Bretonia. Made Squires to get around Bretonia's distaste for mercenaries. Would be Ogres with Swords and Ironfists. Could be a nice bit of extra variety for them to have.

When it comes to crusades I thought of a very cool idea. Your reward for a successful crusade is that you get to build a Keep on a minor settlement. Function wise think of them as heard stones. They make life in the area better for you and worse for enemies; they are also thing you place and not worry too much about.
What these keeps do after a successful crusade would be different than heard stones. Their chief roll would be to make the surrounding provinces more hospitable to Bretonia. Second role would be like keeps in real life, they make further interaction with the surrounding area easier both diplomatically and militarily. You decide which way by what of three building slots out of a higher number of choices.
Things like better trade value with empires in it’s radius or recruiting heroes with more vows unlocked paired with higher hero success chances are some of the ideas.
Crusades where the start of many things in history and let’s reflect that with Bretonia

Maybe Louen should have a mechanic to build in vassals and bretoonian cities. Like the Skaven or Vampire Coast can. Maybe he gets buffs for treaties and keeping vassals and negatives by confederation. Essentially his gameplan should be surrounding helping out his allies, vassals and other Bretoonian dukedoms. Sometimes that would include defeating great monsters or attacks by factions. With doing that he gets great buffs, benefits, events and other such things. It would play differently than Karl since his campaign is all about unifying the Empire. Leon would rather be about ruling this nation of separate smaller states. Maybe they could look at something like the Chaos Dwarfs and have a court where you make decisions for all Bretoonian factions. And you have to keep the dukes and higher upp of this society happy. Also dealing with the Red Duke as part of this. Secondly I would love for the Red Duke to be added to the Bretoonians as a FLC. He would of course be a mix of undead and bretoonian troops. I know he technically is a Vampire Count but I think he would be great as part of this court system and also be a fun twist on the holy knightly thing going on. He would be a bit like Azhag is for the greenskins.

Keep the kill this many mechanic for the lesser factions but for the king and the grand crusade have a target province which when conquered can be granted to a new brettonian "crusader dukedom". I would love a version of chaos warband progression, but instead of upgrading your knights from errant to realm, etc. It would be really cool if you could upgrade something about them. For example using an upgrade resource you could give your errant knights an increase in charge bonus. However instead of being a one and done thing like the greenskin scrap, let them "level up" a few times. Units of knights are supposed to be low ranking nobility, it would be really cool if it felt like they were improving as you crusaded across the map.
On that note of crusading, if you had a crusade mechanic for bretonnia, it could tie in nicely to what you need to do to improve your knights in an army. Say for example, you have a crusade target; each army is working towards a faction wide crusade victory, but the individual armies are earning a name for themselves. It could be bravery, piousness or something and being similar to other systems, if the army is out fighting and winning, you earn more to spend on the units in said army to make them better.
Ultimately I think Bretonnia needs to have its knights feel truly unique and some sort of system to improve them on an individual level would be great I think.
