I've been using cakewalk/Sonar for over 25 years. I can recommend it to anyone looking for a professional DAW for composing anything from Classical music to hard-style. All the music on my channel has been produced exclusively with Cakewalk and some soft synths (VSTs). Look in my video descriptions for more details on which plugins i use. Cakewalk might not be the easiest DAW for absolute beginners, but that's where videos like this tutorial can be of great help! So kudos to the maker of this video!!

Thanks for these cakewalk by bandlab videos. I was in between getting new Cubase and protools. Didn't want to spend a ton of money on a daw when I have fl studio and Maschine already. I had to learn pro tools at my friend's studio but didn't want to dish all the money out for it. Got cakewalk by bandlab and it's awesome. Your tutorials have helped me save money for other equipment and learn how to navigate cakewalk by bandlab and have been very helpful. You are the man, Mike!!!

Also here to report that as of today (9/11/2020) when I installed the update for Cakewalk, it disabled these plugins and I had to re-enable them. Thanks again for all your work!
I recently had to do a Windows 10 reinstall and lost all my old Sonar Platinum plus that you are taking about Mike. So I was fortunately able to get them back by logging into my old Cakewalk account and downloading those old Platinum files and reinstalling them along with Zeta, Rapture, and Dimension Pro etc. So glad because I loved my old Platinum plugins!
Cracking song Mike - I could listen to that voice all day long - a truly sublime vocal. Another great tutorial too btw - keep up the good work. I only discovered your stuff last week and I have learned more in the last ten days than I have in the last ten years of recording with multiple versions of Cakewalk - going all the way back to Home Studio XL!

Bro these are awesome vids. I was a Sonar user for years and made the switch to cakewalk a few months back. Although identical, vids like this are fantastic as there's stuff in recording that you simply wont figure out without help. Automation for example is a huge area. Automating volume is easy enough but say automating a vocal doubler so that it only comes in on the chorus. Or any effect for that matter. Thrilled to be a subscriber :) Thank you so much.

Thanks Mike! Fantastic video again! I have ton of experience with recording the guitar. But with vocals, I was always struggling. This channel is a gold dust for home recording enthusiast! I just remixed the vocals with VX-64 and it sounds like a different recording, like recorded in a pro studio. Well done!
Nice video! I've been using Cakewalk/Sonar since the early 90s and the PX-64 Percussion Strip for my drums since around 2010. It's a quick way of applying an effects chain - all in one audio plug-in. It is quite effective at getting rid of any "room noise" that comes along with the original drum samples.
Your session of the 3 plugins in Cakewalk by BandLabs was excellent... Mike I have learnt a great bundle of knowledge from you. Bless you more and more !!!!
Such a good explanation of that plugin that I discovered thanx to you ! Playing around with it, my opinion is that too much compression will bring up all the unpleasant mouth noises. And the expander can help cut all the small sounds (like the breathing, the slight computer rumbling, or other very low db sound sources). They are to be used softly, because the voice can become very well filtered of "unpleasantness", but by doing so become completely unatural. I have the utmost difficulty to remove the muddiness from my voice without sounding like a tincan. Still playing around. Thank you ! You do very high quality content.

Well done. Both in information and video production. I use the Vocal strip all the time mainly for sibilance and delay. But never messed around with the other controls. For vocal compression, I use Boost 11 but now know the vocal strip has abilities as well. I am also working on a drum track presently and the percussion strip will be something I will delve into. I thought I knew just about everything about how it works but I am happy to say that Creative Sauce has really taught me a lot. Where were you when I started out over 10 years ago? I have a several Cakewalk Sonar user study user guides that are available, but with the many changes Bandlab has made to upgrade the DAW, is just great and I no longer have to pay to use it!

A quick question - the de-esser, from what I understand, is basically a specialized EQ. If you use it at the beginning of the chain, and then add those frequencies back in later with the EQ, doesn't that defeat it? If so, is there a way to avoid this, such as keeping away from whatever frequencies the de-esser is working with as you boost the higher end? Thanks!

Hi Srijan! Good question. This should placed as an insert on the vocal channel. It's usually going to be used by itself. Saturation is one of those effects that changes with more signal, so the input level can be used to drive it harder. But then it may be too loud, so you can use the output control to compensate. I've been using Cakewalk for a long time myself including Music Creator and was excited to get this when BandLab released it. I must have enabled the VX-64 already on mine but will check the others. Am I the only one that thinks they should have called the effect EXPRESS instead of COMPAND since it has expand and compress? Thanks for the explanation on these!
Thanks for the tutorial. It would have been a little more explanatory if you had discussed just exactly what "saturation" is in a technical sense. It is actually the addition of distortion, but harmonic distortion, which the human ear finds pleasant (in modest amounts). Both tube and transistor amplifiers distort in this way when the signal is increased to a level where the circuit is "saturated". Saturation is the very essence of analog audio. Of course, as these plugins show, the effect can be fully emulated in the digital domain.
I bought a Neural DSP Archetype plugin and added it to Cakewalk. When I add it in the FX panel of the armed audio track the plugin pops up but when I change anything in the settings the signal of my guitar stays unaffected. Tried some basic delay etc. that comes with Cakewalk and my tone is also not affected. What am I missing here?
I downloaded a reverb plugin (Tal Reverb) on a windows 10 computer. It is not showing up in any of the excluded windows (VST, VST3, etc). How would i get it enabled under this scenario? Thanks very much and always well done videos. Philip
I guess what I am not understanding is you said you never use a expander on vocals. However, during your demo your changing the parameters of the expander. Is there a way to set the controls of the expander to disable?
i use this program for other recordings such as voiceover and i must say i am a litle disapointed and here is why i am disaponted i have seen many others explaining cakewalk ( like some videos on facebook .... ) but you sir are doing that in a way that one gets the feeling like sitting beside you and you explain it. I have used in the past many many many daws but cakewalk is the daw for everything and i would apprechiate it if you do a video where you explain everything .... but please do that the same way as you did this video. Thank you for all of your effort. i realy enjoyed it as if i was right there in your studio ....
Another great video - plug ins probably all a bit too subtle / irrelevant to me but I was still spellbound throughout! But that may have been Susie's voice! You really need to do something with that song :-)
Hey Mike quick question about the vx 64 vocal strip. Since it has a built in compressor and equalizer would it be necessary to use a separate compressor or equalizer either before or after it in the chain? Or do you basically only need to use the vocal strip alone? I know the answer might be based on your needs but what is your take on this. Thanks.
I believe that these plugins were still being hidden with the new install of Cakewalk I did a few weeks ago here in 2021, so this video is still relevant. :-)
Great! informative. New to Cakewalk. Moving away from Presonus. I use the VX-64 Vocal Strip and Cramit on Female Vocal. Nice plugin! Thanks! Looking for ways to trap overlaps in Treb, Mid Bass. . . based on priority. IE: Low male vocals over bass, drums and synth tracks. I hate mud! Any vids on that? TA!
Hi Mike! Thats so good! One question please. I don´t know what to do. I opened the SI-Drumkit and let it run together with my audio recordings. But when i open a plugin for instance the breverb during the running session the drum disappears and is not to be heared anymore even so with other Plugins ... only one appears. Is this a bug or how can it be done to open more than one plugin? Your tutorials are really great!! i begun with Sonar 4 over X2 but now i am so happy this all is now much easier.
Thanks for the vids, I had no idea of these. Only thing I would say in terms of the order of the effects on the vocal strip, is would it not be best to have the de-esser after the EQ?
Actually, I tend to agree with that. Since reductions made by the de-esser could be reintroduced by say, a high shelf later in the chain. For a long time, I did put it towards the end, and I think you should if you can hear a difference. Ultimately, I feel any difference is often so subtle, most cannot hear.

In general I would say after eq, but before reverb.

I've been using Cakewalk for a long time myself including Music Creator and was excited to get this when BandLab released it. I must have enabled the VX-64 already on mine but will check the others. Am I the only one that thinks they should have called the effect EXPRESS instead of COMPAND since it has expand and compress? Thanks for the explanation on these!
As you could probably tell, I wouldn't have minded if it was just a compresser!

Thanks for the tutorial. It would have been a little more explanatory if you had discussed just exactly what "saturation" is in a technical sense. It is actually the addition of distortion, but harmonic distortion, which the human ear finds pleasant (in modest amounts). Both tube and transistor amplifiers distort in this way when the signal is increased to a level where the circuit is "saturated". Saturation is the very essence of analog audio. Of course, as these plugins show, the effect can be fully emulated in the digital domain.

I bought a Neural DSP Archetype plugin and added it to Cakewalk. When I add it in the FX panel of the armed audio track the plugin pops up but when I change anything in the settings the signal of my guitar stays unaffected. Tried some basic delay etc. that comes with Cakewalk and my tone is also not affected. What am I missing here?
I downloaded a reverb plugin (Tal Reverb) on a windows 10 computer. It is not showing up in any of the excluded windows (VST, VST3, etc). How would i get it enabled under this scenario? Thanks very much and always well done videos.

I guess what I am not understanding is you said you never use a expander on vocals. However, during your demo your changing the parameters of the expander. Is there a way to set the controls of the expander to disable?

i use this program for other recordings such as voiceover and i must say i am a litle disapointed and here is why i am disaponted i have seen many others explaining cakewalk ( like some videos on facebook .... ) but you sir are doing that in a way that one gets the feeling like sitting beside you and you explain it. I have used in the past many many many daws but cakewalk is the daw for everything and i would apprechiate it if you do a video where you explain everything .... but please do that the same way as you did this video. Thank you for all of your effort. i realy enjoyed it as if i was right there in your studio ....
Another great video - plug ins probably all a bit too subtle / irrelevant to me but I was still spellbound throughout! But that may have been Susie's voice! You really need to do something with that song :-)

Hey Mike quick question about the vx 64 vocal strip. Since it has a built in compressor and equalizer would it be necessary to use a separate compressor or equalizer either before or after it in the chain? Or do you basically only need to use the vocal strip alone? I know the answer might be based on your needs but what is your take on this. Thanks.

Great! informative. New to Cakewalk. Moving away from Presonus. I use the VX-64 Vocal Strip and Cramit on Female Vocal. Nice plugin! Thanks! Looking for ways to trap overlaps in Treb, Mid Bass. . . based on priority. IE: Low male vocals over bass, drums and synth tracks. I hate mud! Any vids on that? TA!

Hi Mike! Thats so good! One question please. I don´t know what to do. I opened the SI-Drumkit and let it run together with my audio recordings. But when i open a plugin for instance the breverb during the running session the drum disappears and is not to be heared anymore even so with other Plugins ... only one appears. Is this a bug or how can it be done to open more than one plugin? Your tutorials are really great!! i begun with Sonar 4 over X2 but now i am so happy this all is now much easier.
Thanks for the vids, I had no idea of these. Only thing I would say in terms of the order of the effects on the vocal strip, is would it not be best to have the de-esser after the EQ?
Actually, I tend to agree with that. Since reductions made by the de-esser could be reintroduced by say, a high shelf later in the chain. For a long time, I did put it towards the end, and I think you should if you can hear a difference. Ultimately, I feel any difference is often so subtle, most cannot hear.
