Agree wholeheartedly ... it never ceases to amaze me how CbB is always completely disregarded in the countless articles & blogs that keep being published advising us all of the best DAWs around. I suspect the lack of Mac support or the absence of oodles of built in instruments and native plugs that the 'big names' all boast must put people off ... else it's a perverse snobbery that nothing free could possibly be any good! Anyway, their loss not ours ;-)
@@mrsnowman9227 I wouldn't be too upset by it. Ive been a long time user of Sonar (the predecessor to Cakewalk). It has always been overlooked in favour of other DAWs regardless of bundled plugins (it used to have more). Thats OK because your choice of DAW should always be based on workflow and what is affordable. So if Live or FL studio works better for others that's fine too. Just see it as were lucky that Cakewalk works for us, given its now free and we have Mike at hand providing informative videos!
@@Reeceline Not only do we have Creative Sauce videos but we also have a FB group loaded with knowledge as well. For quick answers the growing FB community is a great resource. I've been with Cakewalk since the beginning - the Twelve Tone days (midi sequencer only).
@@Reeceline Agreed. I never cared one bit if my DAW didn't win a popularity contest. It does EVERYTHING I need it to do. I've watched hundreds of mix tips and tutorials where they were using Pro Tools and I was able to do everything they did. At least I never had to add a plugin to flip the polarity of a track LOL.
FYI, modifiers like the shift key are consistent throughout the DAW. shift-mouse in the piano roll will move the selected note just like the automation nodes. shift-mouse will move clips restricted as well (very useful for moving a clip to another track without messing up the timing of the clip). control-mouse will always duplicate, shift-control-mouse always duplicate and move restricted, etc.
Even if someone watched this and knew everything you covered (which I didn't, that Select module was a YES! moment for me) it's always good to get a confirmation, that ''Oh, I'm glad it wasn't just me'' is nice. Mike, you make great videos - I mean they are technically very well done, well paced, and thoroughly explained, plus all is well lit and framed, etc, very recognizable brand you've carved out. It's NOT surprising you've broken the 100k subs. Bravo.
Thank you so much Mike, I love all of your Cakewalk videos. This one is very helpful, and I did not know how to do most of these things. You taught me exactly what I needed to know!
🤯 Mind blown! I didn't know about any of those! I still have so much to learn. Thanks Mike, as always, you are a great teacher and provide an amazing resource. I'm going to start using all of these tips from now on. Awesome! 🥰
2 mins of watching = learned about Automation Snapshot! Mike, you're making a superior tutorial with this quick start before your intro! Genius. Now I'll keep watching
Mike: you consistently deliver really high-quality videos, and constantly amaze me by how huge your knowledge of CbB is! Thanks very much for this really useful video.
I know that automation is relatively basic, but it's something I've always struggled with since learning Cakewalk. The more frustrated that I get, the less enthusiasm I have to go back and have another attempt. After seeing this video, I'm actually looking forward to giving it a go later this evening. Thanks Mike!
Mike, you are awesome! I have been utilizing almost all of these procedures you showed us today...... in the hardest way known to mankind. Sometimes I just literally start over and try to recreate it manually. This is really going to make a huge difference for me and my workflow process. Thank you for sharing.👍👍
Hi Mike - another great set of tips! I didn't know about automation snapshot (🙂) and a number of other features were timely reminders of several tricks I'd forgotten about. One thing I discovered though ... when you're not sure which plugin parameter to select from the available options listed in the automation menu, there's actually no need to engage 'Write' mode, start playing and then 'wiggling' the desired parameter. Instead, simply open the plugin and 'wiggle' the parameter (without playing the track) - then open a new automation lane (using the automation lanes button as usual) ... find the plugin in the list presented and the previously 'wiggled' parameter should already be in the sub-list and ready to be selected 🙂 Hope this helps (perhaps a very small payback for all of the great things I've learned from you over the years!)
Very cool. I didn't know about "Automation Snapshot" but I'm always using the "Move" tool to add two entries (close by) to the start of the attempted change, then add two more at the end of it. This way I can then just move the range in between without losing the former value :D
DOH I knew all of these EXCEPT the obvious first one where you select the automation from the drop down menu and edit it right over the waveform. I've always used lanes but I think this is more handy
I always thought of snapshots as being a single point. I never thought to take multiple snapshots to automate. I would draw them or do another method instead. I like the multiple snapshot idea. Very handy! I also didn't know the "Select Module" was even a thing! THANK YOU! You the man, Mike!
Thanks, Mike. The freehand drawing of curved with the Alt key pressed was new to me. FWIW I often do a snapshot of all busses once I have a good static mix before doing any automations.
Thanks for this-- Nope, I've never used Automation Snapshot before. In fact I never knew what it meant. I also didn't know about holding down ALT to draw a free-flowing line. Very useful indeed.
MIke, if you go to a clip in the track view and right-click while holding shift you can switch between automation data. Place the curser on the ghosted automation lane you want to adjust. Likewise, if you place the curser in an area of the clip with no automation and right-click/shift it returns to clips. I never use automation lanes. I prefer to have the automation superimposed on the waveform in the track view. Lanes are too cumbersome but if you use the right-click/shift method it's easy to switch between them. Thanks for the videos! Great help!
Great video Mike. Lots of useful things to learn there. Like most of your videos I dip back in from time to time and I think I'll be revisiting this one too.
Marvellous ! This vcideo is a "BEST OF" for me, personnaly, at this moment... Yes ! Some concepts i've already "met" along my learning flow, i mean, now, it was time to learn more and, it's done... As usual with your video. Thanks. Alban
There were quite a few that I didn't know but more specifically you answered some questions/difficulties i was having with controllers. Thank you Mike!
Great info Mike! I have been a Cakewalk person since the stone age but I just wanted to thank you for lots of new info on automation. I'm excited to utilize some of the processes you showed! Also, you mentioned theTH3 plugin. I don't think you have done anything with that plugin with respect to a video. If not, I would certainly be interested in seeing it being shown in depth and maybe along with other Cakewalk provided plugins (but not necessarily TTS-1!) Thanks again!
Hi Mike! It’s been a while, but I’ve finally found some time to catch up on your videos. This one in particular is very informative and I can’t wait to get back to my little studio and apply what I’ve learned. Your tips are going to make my automation much easier, and I’ll be using it a lot more in my pieces. Thanks as always for your dedication to bringing us the Cakewalk secrets! Time to go watch some more…
Wow! Great video Mike. I didn't know hardly any of that and now I know how to do loads of things I've always wondered about (but not enough time to learn). Thank you once more for educating me on this great program.
What the automation tool really needs is a Transform Tool like PRV Controller Lanes have (Yes I have put this feature request in through the official channels)
Automation snapshot didn't know - and the choir icons made me look - didn't know they were there. I swear I've seen the hourglass circle thingy (whatever it is) replaced with the 5 people symbols (choir) at times - looks like a W (unless I dreamed it)
Your videos have been very helpful to me. It is great to have this resource when I get stumped with a problem. Here is my current dilemma. I want to set all of my faders for the intro of the song and and take a snapshot of all of that together. Then, for the verse, set all of the faders to different volumes and take a snapshot of all of that together. Is there a way to do that without having to take a snapshot of each individual fader? I tried selecting multiple tracks for a snapshot, but so far have not made that work. Any help would be appreciated.
This is awesome, but I feel like I'm getting some glitches in the software. Sometimes Automation Snapshot works as intended, but sometimes instead of doing the snapshot it creates new nodes in random but nearby places on the automation timeline, without snapshotting the volume I wanted. Can't seem to figure out why this is the case. I also can't seem to copy/paste one group of automations to another track; even when I highlight the next track it just pastes it somewhere else on the original track. The unison move up/down at 8:30 doesn't seem to be working for me either, even though I'm getting the sideways I beam. I have to highlight all of the notes manually and then shift/drag the group. Which works, but is extra steps and sometimes I can't bring it to exactly the right volume I want. These are great secrets and I really appreciate you sharing them! If you or someone else have some feedback on the queries I'm having, it would be super appreciated! Perhaps I'm misclicking things; Cakewalk is great but a little finicky.
Hi Mike! I added automation to a track with the write-automation setting. Afterwards, none of my faders are moving anymore although the volume automation seems to be working cause I can hear it changing. Do you know why all my faders stopped moving just because I wrote automation on one channel? It seems like a hidden setting got altered somewhere. Other projects are still working fine. It's just the one project that I used write-automation on. Thanks in advance!
Is there a way to adjust all of the track faders at the same time to raise or lower the entire mix ? Sometimes I am happy with my mx but need to bring it down a few db uniformly can this be done in Cakewalk ?
This would be unlikely as CAL scripts , while they do work in Cakewalk by Bandlab, have officially been depreciated. You also need to be careful what CAL command you use. For example, there is the old EditSlide and EditSlide40 commands. However, these will catastrophically crash Cakewalk by Bandlab if you attempt to use them in CAL scripts. To slide MIDI events using CAL scripts, you have to edit the actual time parameter of MIDI events.
The ALT key to raw automation was solid gold. HUGE help. Your series on cakewalk is world class.
Thanks Mike, every day is a school day with your CakeWalk videos.
Cakewalk is a constant revelation, and it's free! Very useful tips, brilliantly and clearly explained as usual. Many thanks 👍🍻
