Scotty, that was a cool video. Being the clueless person I am, when it was wrapping up I thought. I wish he would have commented on low profile tires and rims. Person I think they look like trash when seeing them on most cars.
As per bigger or smaller. It would depend upon the set-up. More importantly I want to see a wheel well close to full. Like my 1984 Chevy Z28 Camaro the 15s look like tiny donuts. It's a project car and I plan on jumping it up to 16s because it will fill the wheel wells better and I'm paralyzed so 1" or 2"s of lift. My main transportation is a 2004 Dodge Dakota that I bought brand new. If still got the factory 16" rims and it's freaking great

The best change I ever made to a car was to my ‘07 Rav4 Sport. After 50,000 rough, noisy miles here in the midwest, I changed out the 18’s for 17’s. Better ride. Much quieter. Even a tad better fuel economy. Did it look as good? No. Was it worth it. Absolutely!

I hate the trend to big wheels with skinny (low profile) tires. These look like bicycle tires when viewed from the side. Some people think they "look cool" but I disagree. Indy car and NASCAR vehicles have high profile tires, so how are high profile tires "uncool"?
Big wheel/low-profile tires are expensive and lead to an uncomfortable ride, plus they cause more damage to the suspension. There's no reason for this trend in tires, other than "everybody does it now" and customers being too insecure to buy something that seems "old" even though it's better. My favorite tires (comfortable ride) are 16" wheel high-profile tires, but you can't get cars like that today, unless they are economy cars or the base models of a few sedans.

Hi Scotty, I ran my 1992 Celica GT4 on 17 inch wheels for 1 year, hated the ride and performance. Went back to original 15 inch, grip and feel much better. Learned a valuable lesson that Toyota don't spend money researching what best for your car for nothing. Going for what might look good doesn't mean it is good. Always enjoy your video's here in the UK.👍

I have been driving sports cars from 2003 to recently, and none had a spare tire. Now I own an MBZ SL series, and it does have a spare tire. It's not a sports car but a luxury sports-style car. The BMWs want to save weight whereas the MBZ could care less.

Love everything you do Scotty. My opinion is the aesthetics is the main reason for the increase in wheel/tire size. Tires are simply a supply and demand so when choosing a vehicle, I recommend you check the cost of new tires as some oddball wheel sizes can cost a fortune for new tires as they are uncommon. Great story Scotty, keep up the videos mate and keep safe.

I had a car with lower profile side walls and found the tires were more prone to damage. I had to replace one every year at close to $300 per tire. The rims were also easily damaged. My choice is steel rims especially if you travel on Massachusetts roads.

I grew up in the 60's, 70's and 80's and I will always like bigger tires, not necessarily the wheels. In fact i just don't like seeing a large wheel with barely any rubber, the wheel to tire ratio looks so wrong to me, but I guess I'm stuck liking the things I grew up with, especially the music☺️

The larger rims do not take potholes as well as the old fashioned proportioned tire.
Question: the tire skinnier and rim bigger vs the tire thicker and the rim smaller...isnt the overall diameter the point?

I've bought several cars in the last 45 years. Here's the wheel (and therefore tire) sizes I can remember:
    1979 Chev - 13"
    1986 Olds - 14"
    1988 Ford - 15"
    2002 Hyundai - 16"
    2014 Kia - 18"
The trend is clear, but the advantages aren't.
The main differences _I_ noticed? Bigger tires are heavier, harsher riding, and more expensive.
As a side note, up until about the mid-nineties, it was somewhat common to go "+1" or "+2" on wheel size to improves performance and appearance. But on my 2014, I went with a "-2" (16") wheel for winter tires to get a smoother ride.

I don't mind large tires\wheels. I just can't stand a low profile setup. On most cars, in my opinion, a decent amount of sidewall looks so much better than a huge wheel with a just a little rubber surround it. Not to mention, the larger the tire, the less affordable they are.

Nice video presentation. Every consumer testing group has found oversized wheels problematic as they usually end up with low profile tires which may be fine on a smooth track but don't hold up on potholed roads (I've seen many a rubber banded Bimmer on road side, wheel bent and tire blown, thanks to unpredicted potholes).

Enjoyed your video on tires. You mentioned that a vehicle with larger tires will accelerate slower, but because of centrifugal force once you are up to speed it should take less energy to maintain that speed. I have a 20" disc sander in my work shop that has a 1/2" thick by 20" steel face plate. When I turn it on it takes a lot of energy to get up to running rpms but after it gets there the amount of energy it takes to keep it at those rpms drops way down. I would think this would come into play somewhat driving with larger tires.

I prefer smaller wheels because it cost less to replace the tire. Smaller wheels also have less unsprung weight. Smaller wheel and tire combo is lighter and takes less engine torque to get everything moving.

    • @Argedis

Exactly. Smaller wheels are literally better at everything including cheaper to replace tires, but big wheels are popular simply because they 'look good'

Hey thanks for the video! Think my preference for larger wheels/tires came from the look of my Hot Wheels when I was a kid…..not logic, just looks.

Can't use in mud ,gravel, or where there is a water puddle that might freeze. Mud dries and there goes the Balance, a rock gets stuck during a turn, same thing and
ICE forming in the side wall , you get the picture. MILITARY and Construction equipment have tried similar, low or airless tires.

I started changing tires in alpha numeric days. I remember the conversion to plus one. The idea was to have the overall dimensions remain the same and get rid of some profile. This helped get rid of sloppiness that was designed into the car. The technology has gone far beyond this. All things being equal, unsprung weight is the enemy. This creates challenges we never anticipated. There is no short answer. I miss the nimble handling of a narrower. Yes, I recognize the pitfalls.

I love going off-road and to extent larger tires are desirable. For me it's about getting a little more clearance for the differential pumpkin. At one time I knew how to wire tie bolts on the bead lockers and lug nuts because of a friend that is into off-road racing.
