They are the best hands down in bad weather. Our 2015 went in 17” of snow. I have a 2021 Crosstrek now and the wife has a 2022 Outback. Bring on the snow.
Looks like my rig. Same color Crosstrek with R5 SUVs. Awesome tires. I have not challenged mine as much, though I did have a 30 mile drive home on unplowed country roads with about 10in of wet snow. No problem.
I've been driving a 2021 Subaru Forester with Bridgestone Blizzak tires. It does amazingly well Yesterday I was driving for miles on a frozen lake covered in about 6-8 inches of hard snow. I'll mention I'm an outdoor adventure guy living in South Dakota. I've been stuck in the Forester only once (2-foot deep drift 30 feet long). Since I'm almost always more than a mile or even five from help I carry with me: 2 snow shovels, 75 ft. tow line, four 40 inch traction boards, and four "cable" chains. You can't be stupid when it's 20 below.
This is why I own a 2013 Subaru Outback , and the only reason I want to trade it in is to get the latest technology, it still runs pretty much like the day I bought it new. ( Thanks for posting, and I believe what you have shown us, because my Subaru has done it ) 😀

That is awesome! Thank you for the video. I took my Subaru for its first big snow run. There was about 14 in on top of the mountain. Luckily, the plows hadn't made it through there all the way yet. It was an amazing experience. A slice through the snow like butter even on all season tires. Everyone wants to knock on the all season tires, but they performed extremely well. I can't even imagine what winter tires would do.

I have the Falken Wildpeak A/T Trail tires on my crosstrek and they eat the snow up and offer additional offroad grip without making too many on road sacrifices. I lost about 3mpg when I put them on. No road noise, and seem to be just fine on wet pavement.
@@Ceranik wildpeak AT trail are great. I have them on my Impreza and I even put them on our Honda odyssey. Took the minivan over a mountain range in a snow storm and kept up with the 4x4s. Drive uphill past all the people stopped to chain up!
And some people wonder why there are still so many Subaru customers! I've driven a Crosstrek around in some seriously rocky mountain dirt roads and treacherous conditions, and the AWD system always gives confidence. If you can do all of that snow driving in a Crosstrek...imagine what the Outback XT or Wilderness could do.
I drove the 2018 Crosstrek through some insanely difficult snow conditions, with over a foot of really heavy snow, and it was incredible!! I pushed it to the limit in some steep inclines and declines in those conditions and it destroyed everything in it's path. Growing up snowboarding in the Pacific Northwest, I've done a ton of mountain snow driving in a number of different vehicles, and the Crosstrek was far and above the number one in handling extreme winter driving conditions!!
Bought a 2023 last week and love it so far suppose to get snow in texas maybe I will get to drive my new subie in have to take it easy only has 300 miles on it
Got my 22 Outback limited this past April. It's currently the end of January,.2023 and not a flake of snow has fallen on NYC. I'm a tad disappointed I haven't had the opportunity to put the young fella through the paces yet.

Looking forward to the 2024 redesign which is already out in japan for 2023. Hyper blue (my color 2016) is back for 2024!

Driving subie’s for 20 years now , I live in the north east , best snow cars ever. There symmetrical all wheel drive system is impressive even on ice covered interstate 95 .
I love my 2024 crosstrek so much, had a 2009 camry that felt like a death trap in the snow, now I have one where I feel safe and can take that head on.
Now that is a good test. Showing what snow tires and all-wheel-drive can actually do for you. A lot of four-wheel-drive trucks would struggle in that deep snow. Without proper tires and wait I think the Subaru would be better in the deeper snow.

Yes I tested my 2003 outback like this and it did as well or maybe better in deeper snow. I had a 2016 legacy 3.6r and now have a 2021 legacy touring XT and love love love the ride on Ohio roads, smooth as silk.
@@MrRoyGuy blizzak ws90 is not a bad choice, it made our top recommendation also this year but is not leading with new technology. ws80 worn out quickly but ws90 seems better so far. for the Continental Vikingcontact 7, not amazed when we tested it on mini and BMW presscar. they give up more quickly on a mix of snow / ice.
@@CarQuestion I had the WS90's last winter, and the R5's this winter on my Impreza. The R5s definitely perform better than the WS90's in deep snow, especially uphill.

I had my fun in my 2019 civic hatchback but my 2020 crosstrek is way more fun on dirt roads and the snow. Been having a mild winter in Chicago so I'm holding off till next season for winter tires.

I buy a new Crosstrek every 2 years and put Bridgestone Blizzak 90" on her. I spend my winters at Hunter Mountain and It drives in the snow just like the video! It drives through snow like It's not even there!

I am surprised to not see that many videos of people showing the strengths of the subaru ascent just like this video. Is it because it is not a good subaru suv? Wow, this is an amazing shake down of the capabilities of the Crosstrek with proper snow tires! It’s the first time on TH-cam that I have seen such impressive driving performance too! Fun to watch and will soon be purchasing a new Suby to replace my 2004 Outback! It’s amazing to see how much better the performance is with the same 2.5 liter!? What year and model is the generation recommended without sacrificing performance from the engine and drivetrain?
I expect that was a very shaky drive home, with the rims packed full of snow like that. hehe. I've had to visit a car wash in my Subaru to quickly fix that for the same reason. Worth it for all the fun.
The deep snow and hill shots were impressive; but having seen (and driven) 2WD cars and trucks in Northern Minnesota in extreme conditions I'd give the tires 90% of the credit. They are working very hard. Put those same tires on a 2WD F150 with say 400lbs of sand in the back and repeat this. Get one with a locking rear diff. I think it will open your eyes (and be a ton of fun!).
@@CarQuestion But, I wonder how it would do with equivalent snow tires? Still, that truck is a lot heavier, and that does not help getting up any hill, buried in snow or not. Regardless, very impressive test with the Subaru! I had an 84 Toyota 4Runner( still had the solid front axle, 1st model) which I had modified with Gleason torque sensing differentials, front and rear. But still with the stock Bridgestone AT tires, It seemed to have similar abilities in the deep snows of Flagstaff, AZ. Some folks referred to it as my snowmobile! But how amazing to see a passenger car performing like this!
It's more than just tires. It's also a great AWD system, which you can see in the X-mode segment at 3:12 .. The car was right on the verge of getting stuck, but you can see the system working out traction quickly on all four wheels. That's a tribute to the car's excellent AWD logic.
@@CarQuestion I have a plain old Legacy and it is a tank. Only got "stuck" once in a blizzard when I was trying to push through 20 inches of wet, sticky snow and high centered on it. Even then I just turned off traction control and rocked back out and parked elsewhere. It does have winter tires also. Wintrac Pro.

My older crosstrek is great in snow too. 2016. 1 inch lift, sparco wheels Bfgko at tires. Beast in snow and back country dirt /mud roads

Fun to watch and will soon be purchasing a new Suby to replace my 2004 Outback! It’s amazing to see how much better the performance is with the same 2.5 liter!? What year and model is the generation recommended without sacrificing performance from the engine and drivetrain?

I expect that was a very shaky drive home, with the rims packed full of snow like that. hehe. I've had to visit a car wash in my Subaru to quickly fix that for the same reason. Worth it for all the fun.
Yes we had to put it in a heated garage after that drive cause the next day…. at -15… the crosstrek would have transform in a block of ice ;)

The deep snow and hill shots were impressive; but having seen (and driven) 2WD cars and trucks in Northern Minnesota in extreme conditions I'd give the tires 90% of the credit. They are working very hard. Put those same tires on a 2WD F150 with say 400lbs of sand in the back and repeat this. Get one with a locking rear diff. I think it will open your eyes (and be a ton of fun!).
nope it won't, our 4x4 Tundra with AT tires and rollers in the bed struggle to get up the hill.
@@CarQuestion But, I wonder how it would do with equivalent snow tires? Still, that truck is a lot heavier, and that does not help getting up any hill, buried in snow or not. Regardless, very impressive test with the Subaru! I had an 84 Toyota 4Runner( still had the solid front axle, 1st model) which I had modified with Gleason torque sensing differentials, front and rear. But still with the stock Bridgestone AT tires, It seemed to have similar abilities in the deep snows of Flagstaff, AZ. Some folks referred to it as my snowmobile! But how amazing to see a passenger car performing like this!
It's more than just tires. It's also a great AWD system, which you can see in the X-mode segment at 3:12 .. The car was right on the verge of getting stuck, but you can see the system working out traction quickly on all four wheels. That's a tribute to the car's excellent AWD logic.
Yes. Subaru has the best AWD system hands down.

@@CarQuestion I have a plain old Legacy and it is a tank. Only got "stuck" once in a blizzard when I was trying to push through 20 inches of wet, sticky snow and high centered on it. Even then I just turned off traction control and rocked back out and parked elsewhere. It does have winter tires also. Wintrac Pro.

Here in Romania there are only a few who own Subaru SUVs,Forester is the main choice here,but they are complaining that the diesel engines are bad...
