7 Reasons Why Highly Intelligent People Are Less Happy

  • Here are 7 reasons why highly intelligent people are less happy. Intelligence is a very important part of life, but it does not guarantee happiness. So, what are the struggles only highly intelligent people have? For starters, smart people have fewer friends, and it is often hard for them to find love. And since they’re usually introverts who have high standards and a tendency to overanalyze things, more often than not, highly intelligent people prefer to be alone.
Furthermore, highly intelligent people struggle with depression and anxiety more than average humans because of their high expectations for themselves and others around them. This can lead them to feel lonely or isolated.
While intelligence has many advantages, there are certainly some downsides of being highly intelligent.

The burden of being highly intelligent is that you often know too much, and this might rob you of your happiness.

I have all 7 traits and was told in school I was below average IQ. Now in my 60's I am reminded by everyone around me that I am very intelligent. Too late. My formative years were damaged by conservative narrow minded teachers in rural Ireland.

I think school only measures a very small part of intelligence. I struggled in school but did well enough to get by. I have ADHD and have a hard time paying attention but it was hard to diagnose because my IQ is high. The issue is is I just have a lot of unnecessary information because I can retain Information that I’m interested in but when it comes to some thing that is boring to me it is hard for me to remember it. I honestly think that our school system is set up just to memorize things. There’s a lot of facts that I know just because I’ve heard them enough. But when I got older I actually investigated more into the facts. For example with history American history and history in the United States is very narrowly taught. I’ve elaborated on the information I’ve learned as an adult well past what I ever could’ve imagine learning as a child. I honestly learn a lot from books and TH-cam. (I just love the feeling of paper back though and going on adventures to the library).
That being said I am absolutely horrible at math I can remember numbers but it takes me a while to do advanced math like algebra. I like geometry but it’s only because it comes up a lot and architecture and I’m really interested in building things. But that’s pretty much as far as that goes.

I'm seldom socialising, because it's boring, and a time waste, not being interested into gossip & smalltalk. I can tick all the boxes...and being overthinking things quite often...which causes emotional stress, but not from that alone. Into some ways, perfectionism is killing it.

I feel that, growing up, intelligence was measured by how well you could read a textbook and pass a test (which was not for me), whereas now intelligence is measured by your creativity, grit, and all things not taught in a traditional school setting.... And to think I was deemed stupid because school was not for me.

It's not that highly intelligent people are less happy, it's just that they tend to be more realistic about the world around them and their place within it. They know that happiness is not a guarantee, and that life can be difficult at times. They also understand that success is not always based on intelligence or talent, but rather hard work and perseverance.
Therefore, instead of chasing after happiness, which may or may not come, they focus on other things that are more important to them such as relationships, family, and personal achievement. In other words, they find fulfillment in things that are lasting and meaningful rather than fleeting moments of happiness.

I have often thought of my 'intelligence' as malignant. Far too often, I find the fly in the ointment. It is not that anyone around me notices. Early in my life, I instinctually learned to fake interest. And that did not make me very proud of myself. I intensely dislike conflict. A workable solution to this is to employ gentle sarcasm and wittiness. However, even this technique is not a panacea. Sometimes your listener is hurt because they take things literally. That was a lesson I came to learn as I grew older in my career and younger people in my crew would mature. The number of people who then told me I had scared them or intimidated them when they were just beginning their careers in the film industry made me feel terrible. The worst example came when a woman whom I adored and had known for over thirty years finally told me she had always found me intimidating. I continuously found myself baffled by appearing to be a walking contradiction. As a commercial director, crew members signed on to my work before anyone else's spot in the production house. I nearly always ended up with Number One crews. One of the best cinematographers in the business whom I worked with many times told me (when I confided in him my dark secret) said something in response that helped. "They said you intimidated them. They didn't say they disliked you. You nearly always get the best people. People who are good at their chosen field like to be challenged; like to learn." That gave me a new perspective and I quit trying to twist myself into a pretzel trying to please everyone. Nonetheless, being bright is isolating and exhausting. Sure, the perks are great, if you succeed at your chosen vocation. Learning how to live with yourself, however, is an entirely different story. I have a poem that I placed into a silver frame. It is by the British writer Thomas Hardy, one of the great 19th -century novelists and 20th-century poets. The poem is entitled "The Darkling Thrush". It comes very near to being a perfect example of how really 'brainy' people feel. Look it up.

As a kid my teachers and even the principal would tell me I was really smart, tbh I thought they just told every kid that so I never took it seriously.
Now, as an adult I realized they weren't bullshitting. I have such a hard time making friends cause I only want to talk about things other people see as taboo, crazy, complicated or "boring".
The "friends?" I have now either ignore them or just say damn bro that's crazy.

Doesn't always mean you are intelligent if you are unhappy and lonely, the ones with more intelligence will find ways to overcome unhappiness, also letting other people around feel that you ignore them is not a smart action, means you are not intelligent enough, because when they realize you don't care about them, they can take some disturbing actions against you. If you are intelligent enough you must not make others notice that you think they are idiot.

Because they have to deal with less intelligent people.

Exactly! Spot on. It's so hard to find intelligent people to have a good conversation with.
Most people love gossip and idle chit chat.

3nov22 yes and no. I do have a very busy mind, with high standards, but I hate being alone. Not an introvert. I consider Introvertion, is selfish.

Real intelligent people are those who choose happiness instead of intelligence.

Because intelligent individuals see into everything.. for Example people sending others to you to distract you from what you're doing trying to get you upset.. prepared destruction is to organized crime as predestined is to life.. petty petty petty petty Petty..

I don't feel more intelligent than the average person, but I overthink to the point of questioning existence and why we are all here. We are just part of the life cycle, and our existence will be completely forgotten about eventually.
