I can remember in the 1970's when we called Toyotas rice burners. The Kubota tractors were also thought to be junk. Years later when they were still running, people started realizing they lasted longer than American made tractors.

I bought a 2021 Tacoma SR5 4 door V6 with the 6 foot bed. The first thing I noticed about the truck was the ride quality. It rides smooth as silk, no road noise...a really comfortable truck. It has all the bells and whistles on it (that I actually want), and it will tow a boat or a small camper trailer with no problem. I am now 63 years old, and I doubt seriously that I will ever have to buy another truck.

I bought a 2nd gen 2008 tacoma TRD 4 door last May for $11,000 with 106k miles on it at an auction. After watching your videos over the years I just felt your an honest guy who’s knows his stuff, you have a lot of good to say about Toyota. It now has 128k as my daily driver and I’ll never get rid of this truck. Gas mileage isn’t great, but this a truck and I’d trust it to get me down any road. It’s black and it’s still a good looking truck with some minor cosmetic mods and a fresh wash people have thought it was a newer model.

I had one like this instead mine came with the TRD Off Road package. I know actually what Scotty was talking about when he said how the gears kept switching. Once you start using the truck long enough, you will know how to fix that issue easily. The gears switching occur more when you uphill because it requires more power. What I did was I switch it to sport mode and leave it in 3rd gear or 4th gear depending on how fast I am going. This avoids the gears to switch back and forth. The only reason I sold my truck was because I needed a bigger truck to tow my trailer. Other then that, it was the best off road truck I've ever driven.

Had the OTT performance tune done on our TRD Off Road 4x4 V6 automatic a couple of weeks ago and it shifts perfectly, not to mention immediately improved throttle response and even better acceleration when ECT is engaged. I have a 2020 TRD Off-Road 4x4. Everything said about the transmission is absolutely valid. Me personally I do like the tighter transmission feel, so it does annoy me, however the good outweighs the bad overall. Yes it is outdated compared to other vehicles currently. But, is that always a bad thing? The current tech in the Tacoma is proven and it will last a long time. It is not your typical futuristic truck loaded with tech and there is a very certain market for a Tacoma.
Update: still have my Tacoma and I love it! The transmission improves over time as you drive it so I’m very happy to say it’s way better! In love with this truck and very happy with it.

I have a 2016 Tacoma trd sport. I have to say they are no where near the quality of the 2015s. I have the 6 speed manual which makes the motor come alive. But I have noticed it runs even better on super and with the variable timing and being a Atkinson style motor it is also sensitive to humidity. This baby likes hot dry air. When we go into the wet season the mileage is negatively effected. Over all I wish I had a 2015. The new ones have that stupid oil filter as well that increases your labor to change compared to the 4.0 motors. Mike Sweers is a ex Chrysler engineer so they are taking the Chrysler way of making them as cheap and plastic as possible. Check the paint thickness since that has been an issue the shifting that you were feeling can be addressed with a software up date. They do that crap so that you come back and they can see if your a large mouth bass or just a perch.

I have a 2017 Tacoma with the V6 (same generation). It is true you can beat the EPA highway estimates in that 50-65 range. However it quickly drops of when you go faster. Our interstates in my state are 80mph and going 85 I get around 12 and going 80 just 14. However when sticking to two lane highways with reduced speed limits I've seen as high as 26.

I have a 2020 Tacoma trd off road, I love it I bought it brand new in 2020 and have put 92000 miles on it, I’ve had zero issues with it other than 2 flat tires lol I never worry about my vehicle breaking down and pretty confident in it, I also live out in the country and off road a lot. My only complaint is the interior space but it’s not a big deal I would also like a little more bells and whistles inside but it’s whatever , I love it

Considering I do 95% driving on the street I should have probably got the TRD 4x4 sport model but instead I went with the TRD 4x4 off-road model I don't know if there's a whole lot of difference but I kind of like the plastic around the fenders & the bumper rather than everything being painted. But being tuned more for the street probably would have been better. The off-road has that locking rear diff which is hella nice, but I don't think I'd ever go off-road enough to where I would need it the 🌮's are so good off road I think just having 4-wheel drive you can get almost anywhere even in stock form for the average person camping, hunting & shooting things like that... Not going out to purposely Rock crawl or mud bog...

My only regret with my 1999 tacoma SR5 is that it is a 4 cylinder. Not much power (I think 157 HP?) but at 181k miles it stiill runs beautifully with the original clutch and starter with no oil leaks. It is reliable as heck. Best purchase I ever made

2nd gen tacomas are also a little clunky, it reminds you that you’re in a Tacoma. Personally I despise the 3.5L V6 in the 3rd gen Tacoma, but that’s just because you need a specific socket to change the oil filter and since we almost never see them in the shop we only have a cheap set of the sockets which barely work. I prefer my 4.0L V6 which is super easy to maintain.

More gears in a transmission just means more hunting for economy and transmission issues. There is nothing wrong with a six speed, and also with an automatic there HAS to be manual mode option for the times we need it.
I still believe that six speed manual transmissions should be standard equipment on trucks.
