I have an 04 Toyota 4runner my H2 and H4 work perfectly but my L4 blinks when it’s in Neutral and it doesn’t stop and of course when I put it in drive or reverse it gives me that beeping noise. Have any idea on how to fix that?
I always have trouble finding info on the year of this 4Runner and trouble figuring out the parts and names. I just bought it, had it for like almost a year now so all pretty new to this stuff and fixing it but I love it so far.
It's been 10 years since I tested 4lo and locking diff and both worked like a charm thankfully. I will make sure to do this once a month from now on. Thanks for the heads up
We literally just purchased a rust free 06 V8 with 243k miles. It runs and drives like it had 60K (former Toyota salesman here ). We are going to build an over landing rig. Thank you for these videos. Please keep them coming.
This comment influenced my decision to buy a 243k mile V8 4x4 Limited and I actually got it cheap considering I can sell it and make a 3.5k profit instantly.
As a fellow 4th Gen V8 owner, please keep posting videos. For some reason, us 4th Gen owners get left out of 4Runner info. Keep it up my brother! (New Sub) PS. What are those gorgeous rims you have!?
That is exactly how I feel! 3rd/5th gen has tons of videos etc. I personally think the 4th is the best bang for the buck and really appreciate Canadian Gearhead for his posts!
Also, change the transfer case fluid as well as your differential fluids as recommended by manual. I know from personal experience, even though I exercised it monthly, the fluid changes made it for smoother engagement of transfer case.
Thanks for your video. If your actuator for 4Lo doesn’t engage you should not panic. It is indeed stuck but there’s a decent chance it can be freed without a T-Case rebuild. I did this on my new-to-me 2008 V8 by repeatedly engaging and disengaging the transfer case several dozen times in my driveway, in between some of these cycling attempts I was also crawling under the truck and lightly tapping the transfer case and actuator (very lightly) with a dead blow mallet. After about 20 minutes or so it finally popped into 4Lo. Some people on the forums suggest doing this process with the vehicle warmed up, others have found success with partially loosening (but not removing) the bolts for the actuator. However I would try the former method for a while before resorting to this. PS - can we talk about how backwards it is that the GX got a manual lever and the T4R got the electronic. That’s some marketer’s logic right there, let’s make the Toyota seem fancy and the Lexus seem rugged.
I bought my 4th Gen Limited V6 last year with 100k miles. While 4H would engage, I couldn't get 4LO to engage for the life of me. I had mostly written it off until last week when I took it to do some very light off roading and attempted the 4LO. In a matter of seconds, it engaged! Now that I know it works, it's going in to have the fluid replaced and I'll continue to engage it every month. Great video!
I have a 2005 4 Runner and I just cycled my 4WD High and Low switch while detailing my car in August. I enjoyed your video. I have never been stuck with my 4 Runner here in WI even while out on the lakes ice fishing. 140,000 miles and no rust on the 4 Runner!
Appreciate your video, but these do indeed have a 'center' differential... it's call a Torsen differential, and it's what enables _full-time_ 4WD on pavement. Don't confuse it with the nomenclature of a traditional transfer-case on part-time 4x4's. e.g. Jeep Wrangler. Different animals. BTW, I also dislike de-throttling (drive by wire) with VSC.
Great video. Thanks for reminder. Very commonly overlooked. Never had this problem with my 08 4Runner Limited 4WD v6. However I do have it with my wife’s Land Cruiser. Last month I drove her LC out to a sandy muddy area to activate 4lo but it ended up getting stuck in 4lo...unable to get back into 4HIGH. I’ve also had problems in the winter where her actuator light will flash when cold cranking vehicle to start the day. I really need to use the 4lo and locking diff more often. These issues are usually resolved once LC is warmed up or I turn the vehicle off and back on again. Going for 300k+ miles in both vehicles(already did it w two other Toyota’s, a 91 4Runner and 97 Land Cruiser). Best built vehicles on the planet!
Subscribed. Really like this channel as I’m looking into purchasing a 4th gen 4Runner. You’re easy to listen to, give great information, videos are clear, and I also like your website. Keep it up!
Actually, the point of failure is the seizing of the Automatic Differential Disconnect (ADD) which is located in the front diff which is a solenoid actuated sleeve. The ADD on my 2004 Tundra did seize because I failed to routinely cycle the 4WD. I was able to tap on the ADD with a hammer and free it up. I learned my lesson and routinely cycle the 4WD monthly.
I put in a vsc disable switch that can be used in any mode. I use it mostly in all wheel drive (H4) for those snow days. Yes, the VSC light will come on during this. Doesn't rob the power away from you when you trying to accelerate on an on-ramp. I still get the alarm if I slide and it still controls the braking during a slide. Its the best thing I ever did. Living in Edmonton Canada, its a must. I can still use the transfer case lock as normal. In this case though, the transfer case doesn't need to be locked. When locked, its 50/50 but when its not, its 60 front/ 40 rear. I prefer when its not locked. i bought the circuit board from a Russian guy named KLIV on one of the forums back in 2008. Still working today. Just had to wire it in and buy a button for the activation of what I call "no headache mode".
Hell yeah! Mine wasn’t working when I purchased it. It came around after exercising it once a day for a couple weeks. Cheers from an 08 V8 owner in Buffalo!
You don't have to rebuild the transfer case just because it needs an actuator. If you know what you're doing you can actually replace the actuator without having to take the transfer case apart. You disassemble the new actuator pull the shaft out slide it over the existing shaft on the transfer case and reinstall the gears in the proper orientation. Reinstalling the gears in the proper orientation is where knowing what you're doing comes in.
Just bought a 2021 tundra few months back. I'm always making sure I put it in 4wd on the back roads at least once or twice a month. Just gotta take care of your vehicles and they will take care of you.
Great video!!! Great review!!! Great channel!!! Owner of two 4-runners, 2004 4runner sr5 4x4 v6, 4.0 litre and 2011 4runner sr5 4x4, v6 4.0 litre. I love them both. Also, just ordered 2020 Tundra crewmax sr5, 5.7 trd offroad 4x4. Can't wait until that comes, special order fully loaded. I had all makes, Toyota is the most reliable!!! 👍👍👍👍👍
Good advice, I engage mine every couple of months. I never seem to have a problem with my AWD and electronic nannies. But we don’t get a lot of snow here. When it does I’ll usually lock the transfer case if snow is still on the roads and leave it in AWD for mostly plowed roads that are still spotty. I never seem to loose traction or have power cut dramatically with AWD though, 03 4.7L. If it is raining and the roads are wet I can put it to the floor and it takes off like normal. Accelerates hard with no wheel slip and no cutting out. Any rwd or fwd drive car I’ve owned the wheels would be spinning like crazy if I did that or traction control going nuts.
I have a 2006 4Runner V8 in Charcoal Gray, only 92K miles now and recently lifted 3” with Bilsteins + new suspension. So, yeah, not all who watch your channel are “boys”. 😂 Thanks for all the content.
Had sticky engagement issues with my old 3rd gen 4runner. I drained and filled the transfer case with Amsoil synthetic gear lube. Ran it for a few hundred miles and it works like new. That was several years ago and it still functions great. I'm not sure what gear oil I drained but the good stuff worked like a a charm.
I knew I was't going crazy. This happen to me in 2004 when I bought my 4th gen. I remember stopping at a stop sign at an intersection and the moment I decided to go my wheels slip and my 4 runner just stiff the fuck up in the middle of an road where it could of cause an accident instead of avoiding it. I remember thinking why did I trade in my explorer for this junk. I eventually ended up disabling that abs crap and was finally able to enjoy my 4 runner. 2020 and I have no regrets, I still have my baby and I'm in control.
Nice video and good advice, thanks for sharing. Hope you don't mind just one technical clarification though.....your 4runner does in fact have a center differential as well as a transfer-case. Yes all 4x4 vehicles have a transfer case but all wheel drive vehicles have three differentials, one each in the front and rear axles and one on the T-case to take up difference in rotation between front wheels and rear wheels or else you get transmission wind up and excessive drivetrain and tire wear ( on the highway/road). The center differential lock is needed for true real world tough four-wheeling, or else you can get all the power spinning say the rear wheels ( if they be in mud say) and no power going to your front wheels. So the center diff lock switches you from all wheel drive to true four wheel drive for off-road. Hope this helped and didn't piss-off everybody. 😊
No worries, you're right. The confusion is that it has its own button, where most other vehicles have all the settings (4auto, 4hi, 4lo) all on one switch for the transfer case.
May i ask what settings are best for 1)dirt roads 2)snow ❄️ 3)steep rocky Hill up 4)steep rocky Hill down 4)deep rain 🌧️ water city 🏙️ street 5)highway 40-70mph Thanks 🙏
explaining 4H vs 4L by saying "just like using your little girly legs on your bike...." thanks for making me spit up my beer. accurate and comical. keep it up man. hope to own my first 4th gen later this year!
3:51 No no. The transfer case has its own differential to separate front from rear axles. So you have THREE differentials. Yes, you can lock it, but that means the front wheels will rotate the same as the back. Good for off-roading, but don't turn corners on dry pavement or you're in for a $$ repair!
2 for 2, your vids have been helpful to me with my 4th Gen 4Runner (this one and the one where you were changing your climate control light bulbs). Thanks man!
Thanks for all the 4th gen 4runner content! 👍 I just bought my first 4runner and it's a 2005, 4.0. I really like it and really enjoyed all your great content about the 4th gen's. Thanks a lot from Tombstone Arizona! 🤠
re camera focusing issue, in case you haven't yet figured it out: when you have a backlit scene (source of light is facing camera lens), autofocus can tend to hunt, especially when lens is dirty as seems to be the case here (it's trying to focus on the dirt which looks high contrast to it). Thanks for the video.
I picked up an 06 4 runner V8 sport in Quebec a few years ago for 9k and drove it home to Windsor. It's needed some TLC since but it's an awesome truck (245K now). I was wondering if you ever grease your slip yolk zerk fittings. Shortly after I got home there were these horrific clunks when I came to a stop. Had to do some research to find out what was going on (thought the transmission was cooked). I grease it with every oil change and that keeps the clunks to minimum. Toyota should of definitely done a recall. They did on the Lexus GX 470. Great vids dude! Keep em comin. 👍
I shot some grease into whatever I could reach when I did my last oil change. That clunk is normal, but weird. Toyota's answer is just to keep jamming it full of grease
Exactly what happened with my 1st Toyota 4th gen 4runner. I didn't exercise it enough.. When I went to use it, it was stuck!! PS: All Hail V8 4runners!!!!
@@MH831 I eventually took it to a transmission shop. They took it apart, while in there, they replaced the dreaded seal, which tends to leak and whatnot.
The last snow I had in the Seattle area, I find that putting it in high four-wheel-drive and manually shifting into second or third gives me better traction when I’m sliding. Especially useful when you’re making that quick turn or a quick stop. If I just leave it in regular four wheel high, then I’m sliding.
V6 4th gen you can drive year round in 4wd. Its a mutli mode 4wd system its a 40/60 split. Locking the center 50/50 split . And yes the 2009 4th gen trail had locking rear diff with the same multi mode 4wd system only avail in a V6. Very hard to find one. I had a 2006 SR5 V8 and now have 2007 Sport V6. Miss my V8. Familiar with both 4wd systems. You can do a mod that shuts off the VSC and ABS with out locking the center. Check out the forms. The 4wd Sequoia's have multi mode 4wd systems too both generations.
Just earned a new sub! love the videos, hard to find good 4th get content, everything is always focused on 5th gens. Believe it or not I own of those "unicorns" your referred to. The dealer had no idea what he had and I got it for a steal. again love the vids, keep up the great work! gonna try your lightbar soon!
Couldn't agree more about the actuator. I under-used mine and although it now still works, I have to go super slow (2-3 mph) to get 4wd engaged. Sometimes, I need to back up to engage or disengage back into 2H. Kind of inconvenient, but I can't afford to get the xfer case ripped apart.
I am pretty sure not all transfer cases have differentials built in but the 4runner does. Thats what allows it to be "unlocked" but when you lock it it functions the same as a part time 4wd without front or rear lockers
You're right, the V8 actually has a torsen limited slip diff in the transfercase to split the power to the front are rear in awd mode. The centre diff lock button completely locks the torsen diff so there is no slip at all. It's a beautiful system, and it works well.
Thanks for the reminder I use 4 wheel drive all winter but its summer and I haven't used it in a while so went through all 3 going to do this every month good idea!!!
Recommend doing the smokers kit upgrade. It adds a second cigarette charger, gives a small cubby for change, and just looks better imo. Great video btw. Always have to remind myself to do this on my 2006 4runner V8.
I have 2 3rd gen 2000 year 4runners and you are right there not perfect they have the set of problems the fuel sending unit is one of the worst problems on the 3rd gen I have a sport and a limited nice 4th gen bro
Growing up my dad always told me to just never touch the 4wd. He didn't know much about cars. I still don't know if the transfer case on my old explorer worked.
Thanks for all the videos. They are a great help. New owner of a 2006 v8 looks like I have the seized actuator from viewing this. I think I will just leave it as the repair is quite expensive. I may try hitting the actuator box with a rubber hammer but if that does not work I will just leave it. Don
How far/long should I drive around monthly in 4hi/4lo to ensure the system stays in good shape? Or is simply cycling through them while in park sufficient? Thanks for all your great videos!
I just b bought a v6 04 runner, my 4wd dont engage i put it on 4hi and both the green and amber icons flash and wont engage. I hope exchanging fluids will fix it.
Currently driving a 07 limited v8 such a reliable truck defiantly looking forward to purchasing bigger tires and possibly lifting it also I’m a new sub love your videos they have been very helpful
Thanks for the video, thinking of purchasing one. If I heard correctly, these vehicles (v8) are in 4H until 4L is selected? I thought it was 2 wheel, rear drive, until either 4H or 4L was selected?
Thank you for explaining it with alot of detail. Haha funny too with those little skits but I'm looking to get a 4runner soon, need the details to test things out on the test drive.
My '06 V8 sounds/feels a little funky in 4-Lo. She shifts in and out of gear just fine, but when accelerating it just feels.... rougher? More shakey? My old '04 V6 4-Lo felt a bit smoother (from what I can remember). But I always remember my old trucks as being way better than they actually were! Love the vids!
Thanks for the videos like this man! I’ve been looking to buy a Toyota as my first car/suv and need Something good for winter and road tripping in New England USA. I’ve been on TH-cam learning about these things since 4th Gen 4Runners are all I can find around me.
Man when I first got mine and started friggin around with things, I had no idea about this since I was a new owner and it was barley engaging. Eventually it started to work but after 5 years of owning it and knowing about this problem I realize how close I was to being screwed into spending lots of $$$. Perfect example of use it or lose it!
Does your Center Diff Lock light on dash ever randomly start blinking while you are driving. I can’t figure out why mine does that on my 05 v8 limited.
When to lock your dif: Dry tarmac: no Wet tarmac: NO! Gravel: yes Mud: yes Sand: yes Snow: yes Ice: NO! The reason hard slippery surfaces are a nope are because the wheels not being able to turn at different speeds makes it prone to spinning. Unlike in loose surfaces like snow, dirt, etc., there's nothing for the sidewall to grab for traction when the vehicle begins to rotate on slippery hard surfaces like wet or icey tarmac. So, it's prone to keep rotating much easier and put ya in a bad situation if you're not careful.
I have an fj, but don’t have the available time to off-road every month. I do go when I can in the summer. I know you can’t use 4wd part-time on solid surface. How are you supposed to use it in this situation? By cycling do you mean just shifting into 4hi and 4lo?
I just bought my 2005 4RUNNER, i’m switching from a 2008 avalanche. So you’re suggesting on snowy road conditions that I would put it in for high and use the center diff lock . I’m also wondering for highway use when the roads are snowy how should I use this. I’m not totally sure of how to use all of this, so any feedback would be great. It’s much different from an avalanche with auto four-wheel-drive and autolock G80 locking differential.
On snowy roads, just put it in 4 high. That will keep all the stability controls turned on. If you purposely want to be able to slide around, lock the center diff
Canadian Gearhead Thanks man I appreciate it I’m still figuring things out. Of course I will be cycling through once a month to make sure everything is functional. I also just ordered the lightbulbs for my dash unit, I watched your video very helpful thanks. 👍
Still gotta have mine diagnosed I'm going 2 next month, but 4x4 system just beeps after I throw it in neutral switch to 4lo then switch back to drive and the lights just flash on n off for 4x4. Any idea what it could b or y its failing? (Edited) part here > (bought used during this year feburary) 2020 < I have the v6 sr5 4x4 . Any and all help appreciated so I can probably gauge what's wrong and get a price on how much it is 2 fix before I take into shop. 👍💯
great explanations man. bang on info. i will exercise my 4 lo coming up. and yes, c diff lock is definitely party mode. no almost stalling at the lights haha
I have a 05' V6 part time 4WD limited, and I was wondering: can you go from 2Hi to 4Lo since you're stationary? Contextual situation would be say you were parked and it snowed and cant get out in 2hi, and obviously you aren't able to cruise from 2Hi to at the least 4Hi.
Nick Colgate ....Theoretically yes you can, put the car in neutral and go straight to 4LO, hit the transfer case locking button on the left side of the dash, you will know it’s done when you get a solid yellow highlight of four wheels on your dash as well as the icon of the transfer case being locked and all the icons of your VSC are solid on your dash. Put your car into gear and away you go, remember 4lo is for serious low speed movement. 4HI should get you out of pretty much anything with the torque-Sensing mode engaged.
Hey! I just replaced the battery in my 2006 4th gen 4runner v8 and the radio, buttons, and backup camera have stopped working. How do I reset the radio/fuses?
Can the 4wd engage when the center difflock is on? I never know when my 4WD is on but I slip the tires when I know the roads are going to bad. Anyone have info on this? I'm tired of watching other videos of 4Runner guys who live in Florida or Texass LOL. I live at 9k feet and this shit is life or death sometimes.
I mean, technically, the v8 actually has a limited slip central differential and not a transfer case, so it makes sense why they call it the center differential lock. The transfer case on the Tacoma looks and operates differently and I assume that's what the v6 4Runner has. This is, of course, just academic. Locking the center diff makes it operate just like a transfer case
Just bought a used 2014 Toyota 4Runner sr5 2WD w/ 4x4 and I never used any 4x4 vehicle. I tried putting it in 4Lo and it kept flashing and beeping....any thoughts?
I wish I'd known about this before my 4WD will not engage anymore. It seems I definitely lost it, after not using the option for a few years. I have the 2004 4Runner Sport.
Mine didn't work when I bought it. I kept playing with it and it started working. Then i did the once a month thing and it always had a clunk. Then I got invited to go offroading in Anza Borrego. I played around with it there a lot, after 7 hrs. offroading, It switches without a noise. It's buttery smooth.
My 4Lo seems to be engaging: the 4Lo light is solid and there's an audible clunk. But the vehicle won't move. Of course, I'm in Neutral with my foot on the brake when turning it on, but then nothing happens. Based on my research, it probably is the actuator, the question is, is it completely out or is trying to work and will "wiggling" it and switching on and off eventually make it work?
@@CanadianGearhead thanks! I finally figured it out yesterday. So to get it to actually move, it's foot on the brake ‐> N -> 4Lo -> D (or any other gear) - it moves. With no experience with these I thought it was supposed to move when I'm in N, 4Lo. And hesitated to shift anywhere from N. Well I learned.
I know you’ve got the Doug Thorley headers on there and they sound great! Don’t remember what exhaust you put on it. I’m looking at doing a combo of a Volant intake, Doug Thorley long headers, and a cat back exhaust. What would you thoughts be on this? Any suggestions or tips?
I have the stainless Gibson cat back. I did a video on it a while ago but might make another since the sound on it wasn't great. I've been considering doing an intake although I'm pretty sure the OEM one performs better
Just a quick question, when you put your 4Runner in 4low do you have to always keep it in neutral? Cause I was putting mine in 4low and once I put it into drive from there the transmission felt very awkward even though I never went above 10mph
Hi. Just got the 4th generation 4Runner. It looks exactly like yours but the interior needs some TLC. What colour is your leather in the interior? Or how can I find out what the colour code is for my interior? Great video's. Thank you.
Hmmmm...my understanding of a 4X4 Transfer Case is that it either sends all of the power to the Rear Wheels in 2Hi or all of the power equally to both Front & Rear wheels in 4Hi or 4Lo. Why would a vehicle need a Transfer Case if will never see 2Lo (just sending power to the Rear Wheels)? Doesn't it make more sense that your truck (being AWD) has a Center Differential that can distribute Some of the power to the Rear Wheels & Some of the power to the Front Wheels? And when the Center Differential is Locked it acts as a 4X4 Transfer Case would. Moreso when in Low Range.
Should you get winter tires for your 4runner?: canadiangearhead.com/winter-tires-for-your-4runner/

I appreciate that. Friend of mine just picked up a 2020 TRD Pro Tundra, it'll probably make its way onto the channel at some point
Good tip. The owners manual in my tundra even states use the 4x4 system once a month and drive at least 10km (straight) to warm up the front diff
Oh no I haven't done that with mine I will have to start.
The Michael from the office scene reaction to the smell of coolant is the reason I subscribed lol my exact reaction to the same thing
Welcome aboard 😂😂
It’s funnier because he kinda sounds like a Canadian John Krazanski
I have a 2006 4Runner V8 in Charcoal Gray, only 92K miles now and recently lifted 3” with Bilsteins + new suspension. So, yeah, not all who watch your channel are “boys”. 😂 Thanks for all the content.
Had sticky engagement issues with my old 3rd gen 4runner. I drained and filled the transfer case with Amsoil synthetic gear lube. Ran it for a few hundred miles and it works like new. That was several years ago and it still functions great. I'm not sure what gear oil I drained but the good stuff worked like a a charm.
That's a good point, I'm hoping that swapping the fluid will help my gf's Tacoma with 4x4 engagement
How do you disable the abs?
My v8 was hanging up on the 4 lo and center diff. Cycled thru about 5 times and freed everything up and works fine
May i ask what settings are best for 1)dirt roads 2)snow ❄️ 3)steep rocky Hill up 4)steep rocky Hill down 4)deep rain 🌧️ water city 🏙️ street 5)highway 40-70mph Thanks 🙏
explaining 4H vs 4L by saying "just like using your little girly legs on your bike...."
thanks for making me spit up my beer.
accurate and comical. keep it up man. hope to own my first 4th gen later this year!
Haha thanks
And one of the best "read more" payoffs in a long time.
100 percent correct even 3rd gens use the 4x4 or loose it I use mine 2 times a month go out have some fun and it helps keep it working 💪
Thanks man!
Glad they helped!
Thanks for all the 4th gen 4runner content! 👍 I just bought my first 4runner and it's a 2005, 4.0. I really like it and really enjoyed all your great content about the 4th gen's.
Thanks a lot from Tombstone Arizona! 🤠
How many Kms you have on your 4runner?
@@VivekSharma-nv4gu a little over 225308.16Kms or 140,000 miles.
re camera focusing issue, in case you haven't yet figured it out: when you have a backlit scene (source of light is facing camera lens), autofocus can tend to hunt, especially when lens is dirty as seems to be the case here (it's trying to focus on the dirt which looks high contrast to it).
What are slip York fittings or whatever u call them?
Exactly what happened with my 1st Toyota 4th gen 4runner. I didn't exercise it enough.. When I went to use it, it was stuck!!
PS: All Hail V8 4runners!!!!
Motion is lotion! Haha
Dammm
Love the 4th gen v8
That sucks how did you go about getting it un stuck?
What is a good way to spot this model with rear locker?
The v8 4runner is fulltime awd. The center diff lock is just that. Because the awd 4runner has a center diff not a traditional transfer case.
I don't even have 4wd on my 07 4Runner, but here I am. Auto LSD RWD for the win I guess
Great video. Watched all the way to the end and hit them little buttons. Going to be purchasing a 4th gen V8 soon and doing some research.
Much appreciated!
Mine is the same about parking brakes 🤣🤣
The transfer case is always engaged. That switch is definatly a center diff lock switch. It locks the center diff.
The manual suggest 10 mile of use every month. If you read the Manuel, you should be good. 😌
On v8 4runners since they are full time awd they have a transfer case and a centre diff to allow the computer to use it in the awd.
The number one failure on the 4wd is the front actuator. I have replaced at least a dozen front actuator to replace the transfer case actuator.
Thanks for all the videos. They are a great help. New owner of a 2006 v8 looks like I have the seized actuator from viewing this. I think I will just leave it as the repair is quite expensive. I may try hitting the actuator box with a rubber hammer but if that does not work I will just leave it.
Don
So when is someone supposed to engage the diff lock? In motion? Or in neutral?
How far/long should I drive around monthly in 4hi/4lo to ensure the system stays in good shape? Or is simply cycling through them while in park sufficient? Thanks for all your great videos!
I usually just cycle it while parked but it doesn't hurt to drive around a bit on gravel or something loose
V8 4Runner way cool. Wish that was at least an option with every generation.
About to be getting a 4Runner pretty soon, love your videos man! Great info 🤙🏼
Thanks for watching!
I am looking for the exact wheel well splash guard for your 4runner.
Hell ya man love the channel and helps me learn all the in and outs of my 4th gen
1996 to 2000 year models have a rear diff lock that changed in 2001 to 2005 and on further was moved the the transfer case
I read that 4th gen 2wd 4runners had locking rear diffs. That may only be useful if you would swap it out with the rear diff from a 4wd 4runner
I believe they had limited slip differentials. I forgot about those since none were sold up here in the land of the moose
Canadian Gearhead 2wds have “Auto-LSD”, which is basically A-TRAC but for the rear wheels only
Oh so it's not mechanical? That stinks
Thanks for the video, thinking of purchasing one. If I heard correctly, these vehicles (v8) are in 4H until 4L is selected? I thought it was 2 wheel, rear drive, until either 4H or 4L was selected?
Only the V6 models have 2wd
Thank you for explaining it with alot of detail. Haha funny too with those little skits but I'm looking to get a 4runner soon, need the details to test things out on the test drive.
Lovin the 4th gen content! Keep it coming!
A 4runner would be perfect for you by the sounds of it
Man when I first got mine and started friggin around with things, I had no idea about this since I was a new owner and it was barley engaging.
Eventually it started to work but after 5 years of owning it and knowing about this problem I realize how close I was to being screwed into spending lots of $$$.
Perfect example of use it or lose it!
Sounds like you made it through by the skin of your teeth haha
So what does the manual say about diff lock? Do u engage it when it’s in neutral? Or when it’s in motion? Can’t find it in manual..
I have a recent vid all about using the 4WD system
Everytime i activate my H4, check engine and vsc trac will turn on. what would be the issue?
Does your Center Diff Lock light on dash ever randomly start blinking while you are driving. I can’t figure out why mine does that on my 05 v8 limited.
No mine never does that
When to lock your dif:
Dry tarmac: no
Wet tarmac: NO!
Gravel: yes
Mud: yes
Sand: yes
Snow: yes
Ice: NO!
I will dare to disagree with you about the rear diff lock, on my 2003 sport edition does have a rear diff lock when the transfer case is engaged.
Lol at the dude singing and failing at the end 🤣😂
I have an fj, but don’t have the available time to off-road every month. I do go when I can in the summer. I know you can’t use 4wd part-time on solid surface. How are you supposed to use it in this situation? By cycling do you mean just shifting into 4hi and 4lo?
Yes, just engage and disengage once to keep it moving freely
Try rolling forward a foot and see if it engages, if not the actuator might be seized
@@CanadianGearhead I'm going to do that 1st thing in the morning. Aren't you supposed to feel a grip in the steering wheel when it engages?
great explanations man. bang on info. i will exercise my 4 lo coming up. and yes, c diff lock is definitely party mode. no almost stalling at the lights haha
I have a V-6 4 Runner. There is no full-time AWD mode on this model. So what does that "center differential lock" do in my case?
U can drive it in 4 wheel drive high with the center diff unlocked on paved roads.
@@jeremywilliams5873 Thank you. But why would I want to drive in 4 wheel high on a paved road?
I had a customer with a 1st gen tundra with the same issue. It says in the manual to use it once a month.
Hey! I just replaced the battery in my 2006 4th gen 4runner v8 and the radio, buttons, and backup camera have stopped working. How do I reset the radio/fuses?
I'd start by going through and checking each fuse to see if any are blown
@@CanadianGearhead the power still works for the radio, but I can't click on any of the buttons. I'm wondering if it might be a security feature
I own a 07 FJ Cruiser and still watched to the end. 🤙
Thanks for watching!
Yes you need to use them regularly and change the fluid. Ford and GM has problems with their actuators as well on their trucks
Just bought a used 2014 Toyota 4Runner sr5 2WD w/ 4x4 and I never used any 4x4 vehicle. I tried putting it in 4Lo and it kept flashing and beeping....any thoughts?
Make sure you're in neutral and on flat ground. Try rolling forward a foot if it's not engaging
What if I hit my “center locking diff” and it does light up or anything? Could I have a bad fuse for it or something? Thanks!
Could be a bad fuse or switch I guess
Canadian Gearhead thanks! I’ll look into that! Love the channel!
I already broke my 5th gens front right CV in loose sand mainly because of the A-Trac holding too much torque while I slammed the gas
New 2021 Nightshade 4 Runner owner here, great informative video, thank you!
I wish I'd known about this before my 4WD will not engage anymore. It seems I definitely lost it, after not using the option for a few years. I have the 2004 4Runner Sport.
Love that you call it party mode 🤪
Mine didn't work when I bought it. I kept playing with it and it started working. Then i did the once a month thing and it always had a clunk. Then I got invited to go offroading in Anza Borrego. I played around with it there a lot, after 7 hrs. offroading, It switches without a noise. It's buttery smooth.
Good reminder that all machines are happier when they're being used
My 4Lo seems to be engaging: the 4Lo light is solid and there's an audible clunk. But the vehicle won't move. Of course, I'm in Neutral with my foot on the brake when turning it on, but then nothing happens. Based on my research, it probably is the actuator, the question is, is it completely out or is trying to work and will "wiggling" it and switching on and off eventually make it work?
If you're in drive and your 4runner won't move, something is definitely broken
@@CanadianGearhead thanks! I finally figured it out yesterday. So to get it to actually move, it's foot on the brake ‐> N -> 4Lo -> D (or any other gear) - it moves. With no experience with these I thought it was supposed to move when I'm in N, 4Lo. And hesitated to shift anywhere from N. Well I learned.
@@nekto34 Glad you got it figured out!
Good video, I've owned mine for a while now and never knew this!
So you explain how power transfers from tire to tire when the Center Diff is locked then said you don't have Lockers. That's confusing.
Just a quick question, when you put your 4Runner in 4low do you have to always keep it in neutral? Cause I was putting mine in 4low and once I put it into drive from there the transmission felt very awkward even though I never went above 10mph
I always shift it to neutral first
Hi. Just got the 4th generation 4Runner. It looks exactly like yours but the interior needs some TLC. What colour is your leather in the interior? Or how can I find out what the colour code is for my interior? Great video's. Thank you.
Mine is grey
This explains it well.
@@zengarden2832 Thanks!
I got a 2017 trd off road. The rear dif locker doesn’t work... Idk what to do
