    Hi @skillbuilder. How do you finish off the underside? Would a trip be needed where the plasterboard would be the underside of the lantern? Or is there some type of plastering bead available?

    Nice SB video as usual & like the lantern rooflight, however my only niggle is the profile section to where it sits on the builders weathered upstand kerb. I've seen many details in this regard & quite a few have a small oversail (i.e. drip) over the builders upstand kerb to prevent any horizontal driven rain. As you state in the video, reliance on silicone for sealing for long life is a bit hit & miss.

    Is there a difference between the amount of light coming in through the lantern compared to a walk over? What stops a walk over getting really dirty?

    Hi, im going to install one of these on a warm flat roof. Just wondering if i need to worry about insulating the outside of the upstand above the the roof finish ( the 100mm stuck up outside). Or do you think i should just insulate between the timbers of the upstand?

    Great video. I've fitted a number of these lanterns, had a few troubles with using silicone on bitumen roofing felt -. Ok for a while but eventually leads to a sticky mess. Consider the type of sealant used when fixing these.....

    Hi Robin, One thing I have never understood about the UK is the flat roof. We get so much rain and no matter what precautions are taken flat roofs eventually leak and cause problems. With this in mind, I am surprised to see you install a flat roof on your own house.

    • @ukconstruction
      @ukconstruction 5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      There was no option to change the design of the house, It was the first Glass and steel house in the UK, it was basically a glass box with a flat roof, We had to stick with the original design so we enlarged the building and stuck with the theme, The system I use is great and the flat roof installer has been working with me for 20 years and in that time we have never had a failure, Flat roofs are perfectly acceptable if they are designed and built correctly!!!

    • @johnfithian-franks8276
      @johnfithian-franks8276 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ukconstruction I understand now why it has a flat roof. I have had a lot of experience with flat roofs failing and needing to be replaced or repaired. One of my main problems with them is the time taken to build them and then the timber getting wet and then sealed with all the moisture trapped inside. I hope and expect that you have dealt with this problem and it should not be an issue.

      @@johnfithian-franks8276 As you will know John. The flat roofs of 20 years a go are completely different to the flat roofs now.

      @@Jaaammmbbbooo Yes, I know technology has moved on and systems are much better now, but flat roofs are still more prone to problems than hip roofs, and I can’t see the advantage on a house.

    Hi, I’m just about to install a roof lantern but on a felt roof, I’m weary that I can’t bed the lantern down with silicon onto felt? What would you recommend? A little lead capping ontop of the felt under the lantern?? Cheers, great video

    • @SkillBuilder
      @SkillBuilder  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have bedded sun tunnels onto felt with silicone and it has been fine but to be on the safe side use a mastic that seals and repairs roofing felt. I saw one the other day from Everbuild and it was £2.99 a tube. The rain never gets to that seal because the roof lantern covers it.
