    Thanks. I've often wondered how they were used. I suppose eventually the make the hat a bit holey.

      Not much surprisingly, the pins are pretty sharp, they don't cut the material just poke through like with fabric

      I put a link to the supplies we used to make these in the description. The wire we used, we got off Amazon: www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B094QSC385

    I wonder whether a nine-inch hatpin could be classified as “an offensive weapon” if you encountered an unsympathetic police officer! And whether it would hold up in Court that it was a historically accurate part of your costume!

      So I fell down the internet rabbit hole. apparently in 1908 laws were starting to pass about the length of hat pin you could have because the pins were being used as "self defense weapons" . 7 to 9 inches is the max and they also had to be capped. it doesn't seem like this law was revoked.

      @makaylar.6722 I had read that hatpins were used for self defense, so I'm not surprised there were laws passed 😅

      @@AbiSueCostumes Why am I not surprised that laws were passed to protect those from whom the women had to defend themselves, rather than to remove the need for self-defence?

      @pippaseaspirit4415 pretty standard I'd say 😆
