I tip my hat to your fetching chapeau!!! It reminds me of cake which is always a true slice of happiness. I think I need one and then we shall start the cake hat society.
You got the V&A to answer questions - that is amazing! Well done. I never thought of straw dulling needles - she types as a long-time guinea pig owner who regularly has to sweep the stuff. Deconstruction some straw to use to build a new hat has been on the to-do list for a while. My curly hair is now in locks, so my already big head is, hat-wise, huuuge. Hair management is the hardest part of hats. Yours looks lovely The only question for a follow-up is do you want one giant hat, or do you want two medium ones. You could easily chop down the crown into one of those sun hats that has to pin into hair to stay in place. - Cathy (&, accidently, Steve), Ottawa/Bytown
Thank you! Yeah, the straw is basically paper. Kind of like using your good fabric scissors on paper. Not sure if I want a big hat or two smaller ones yet… maybe I could do a couple Victorian bonnets?
@@DixieDIY Oooh, that could work. Not sure how you handle a non-circular brim. Sadly, one just can't pop down to The Bay's Hat Section to do some practical research... ah, the resources I grew up with and never thought I'd need. What's a period you haven't tackled yet? Maybe the way in is through a hat?
The frothy white folds and sprays of pastel flowers in the fashion plates remind me of cakes. Your finished hat also made me think of a spring-y, spongy confection. Millinery mission accomplished!
Fascinating! Your hair made it work so well too. It's very reminiscent of the Easter bonnets our teachers would try to get us to make in school, apparently (we were told) from a long British tradition of Easter bonnet competitions.
I'm glad I'm not the only one that collects straw braid. 😂 The nicest dainty braid I've found is made of paper which I don't think is period. Most straw braid I see is chunky and even sheds straw. I'm not sure the really nice stuff is made anymore but I still have dreams. I love your hat. It's beautiful and matches your gown so well.
It is always such a surprise to me when I look at a fashion plate and think -- oo, no. Then I see it IRL and think -- Hey, now, that's really kind of cute! It really is CUTE!! Isn't it amazing when a museum gets back to you? I'm still trying to find out if this really long chain on a pendant brooch is a real thing or just some contrivance of a portrait artist. Either way, I don't really care, I'm going to make several of various themes, regardless. Nice work! Love the well timed helper with the coloring book. I had six of those: the only things that change are the height of the hand bringing you stuff and the stuff they bring.
Dixie, this hat is epic!
A hat that looks like a wedding cake, this is the best.
I love this! It reminds me of a big, beautiful birthday cake!
So cute! Now I want a wedding cake hat!
I too was thinking cakes! Like a seriously ornate lady finger cake....I love it!!!

If the hat doesn't feel huge and ridiculous, it's not historically accurate🤣 I need three of those
Welcome to the giant 1780s Hat Club! I love this very much. Thanks!
Haha glad to be part of the club!
It's wonderful and puts me on mind of Edwardian tea partys. Well done.

They remind me of cakes too! Thanks
Love it.
It would be great to see how you do your period hairstyles to go with your outfits.
This was my first time trying this style with short hair. Maybe if I get more practice I’ll share a vid. Thanks!
