I almost applied to New Haven for grad school, then talked myself out of it so that I could get some work experience. Knowing that Richard Lewis is there now makes me start considering it again.
This was super insightful, and I agree with the takes that CS would be an overall cleaner game without skins, but if they just got rid of csgo skins and made new ones for CS2 we would have all of the same problems. There would need to be a complete overhaul for trading, allowing third party sites to operate etc. One of the coolest things about CS is how it’s been community made from the very start. From the half life mod, to map designers, and now skin designers too, and I would be sad to see that change. I just wish valve would REALLY crack down on the skin gambling sites, and get rid of them entirely, opposed to throwing out all of these community made works of art. What a great listen overall though, thoroughly enjoyed this
Valves art team is top notch and I don't mean only skins. I'm talking map makers, visuals and such. If the rest of the cs2 team was as good as the art team cs2 would be amazing.

I had to come back and say after watching the segment on skins, that if valve got rid of skins between csgo and cs2, I can't even imagine the backlash they would receive. Would the game be healthier without skins? Absolutely. Would the world implode if they removed skins? No, life would go on. But if the skin market were to just disappear over night, the fallout would be catastrophic. Hundreds of millions of dollars just gone in an instant. Now of course that number is superficial because most item values are basically arbitrary. But people still put real money into it, and those people (not all) would be absolutely losing their shit in the worst possible ways.
Richard was rubbing one out to Maui's perfectly manicured visage. It took over an hour and he was out of breath by the end of it but we're all very proud of Richard's resolve.

You were saying that valve focused too much on skins, and it's funny to hear 'skin enthusiasts' complain that they didn't put enough time on skins. And I think you are understating a bit how many issues there were with skins at first, and how much effort it is to port all of the skins to CS2. The textures themselves wouldn't be hard to port, only the models, and since all skins for a weapon share the same model (in CSGO) this wasn't a huge effort.
"Valve doesn't care about it" is exactly the problem Richard. It's because valve thinks they know what's best but they are rolling out shit updates which hardly ever address most of the current major problems in CS2 right now. We are still here because Valve hardly ever listens to the community. How in your little mind do you think that a decently working anticheat system and a tick system is not worth the hassle, not for us and nor for Valve? As you said all they prioritise are skins and stickers to look good in the new game because that's what's bringing them 100s of Millions of dollars every month, but they don't fix what actually matters and now you're calling the community dipshits because we do care about it? And you can speculate why those players leave, we can all speculate but don't you dare say that "people can leave because they can't run the game properly anymore because their pc is shit and I don't care". Yes people should upgrade their PCs because it's been over 10 years since CSGO and CS2 is a new game with new game engine, but the current state of it is unoptimised as shit right now and don't be making any excuses for that either Richard.
The argument on skins being ported is narratively concise and intuitively sensible, but lacking context and not a perfect explanation for the problems we are seeing. No doubt Valve does value the skin market greatly, perhaps even more than anything else at this point given it has become a money printer for them. But Valve also employs a huge number of people and many working on skins in CS2 will be in the 3d modeling and texture department. There is no easy "shift manpower" button to reassign personnel in this regard either as the two skillsets required, one for making graphics and models in a game, the other the programming of the game itself, are totally unrelated.
The biggest problem was not skins, if anything skins is one of the main pulling and retention factor for players. The biggest problem for csgo was cheaters by a landslide. Period.

valve have their own view, let them have that until they know it wasn't a good idea and then its too late. if 8 year old game engine can't run on new generation hardware and where i can't even fully use my 240hz monitors then it is a problem. so my ryzen 5600x @4.7ghz 32gb ram and RTX 3080ti 12 gb is obsolete where graphics is not really that fucking good.

As a Dota fan (and I know not everyone is which makes this a special example), I dont mind much that event panelists and casters will get dressed up for an event. Most of them dress to impress for tournaments like TI but they're very knowledgeable about the game and players. But Dota is a special case because mobas in general are complex. You can't just show up and say "Oh goodness player X shot player Y in the face!". It adds to my enjoyment watching mostly.
