An incredibly challenging piece, for each individual musician and for the ensemble. When, after having studied my piano part for several weeks, I met with my trio companions to rehearse, it felt like I hadn't even started the work...
A huge BRAVO to Janine Jansen, Torleif Thedéen and Denis Kozhukhin for this splendid performance, full of emotional beauty... Thank you... 😍

Maurice Ravel was a master of orchestration, so he well understood that piano tone and string tone can be a problem to balance out. He mastered the problem splendidly in the piano trio, and went beyond the more traditional chamber music quality and made the three instruments blossom together orchestrally. The Piano Trio inhabits a sensual dreamscape, offering a magical escape into a world of shimmering colors, exoticism, fleeting shadows and an underlying sense of quiet lament. There are allusions to the asymmetrical rhythm of zortziko, a dance rhythm originating from the French and Spanish Basque Country (echo to his mother). The violin and cello are arranged in widely spaced octaves, with the piano floating between the two. The music unfolds like a dialogue that is at once passionate, tender and plaintive. The second movement is a bubbling scherzo. The title « Pantoum » refers to a form of Malaysian verse popular with 19th century French poets such as Charles Baudelaire to name only him. The third movement pays homage to the Baroque dance form of the passacaglia, in which variations rise above a repeating bass line. Here, the bass line grows out of the first theme of the previous movement. The music reaches a wrenching climax. A few moments later, the piano drops out and we are left with a soulful duet between the violin and cello. The solemnity of the third movement is broken by the sparkling, magical magic of the first bars of the final movement (coda). This larger-than-life music is filled with exuberant splashes of color and shifts between irregular time signatures that give us the sensation of floating serenely in the air as the end point. There is always something deeply moving about music wherever she is. *Lucien*

Thanks you for that wonderful description of the piece. The piece is beautiful because, while so modern, it still makes musical sense, and your description captures it completely.

Thank you for your appreciation. You are quite right absolutely to mention the modernity of this pretty piece so much its writing is extensive. *LM*

I like your clever explanations of the music. But I have a question. Why do you never have a comment about the actual performance?

      That's a very good question :)
These broadcasts take place on major music channels and therefore the performers are professionals for the most part experienced. I live in a musical environment and therefore I have a mutual respect for musicians. I leave the appreciation to listeners, the media, and musicologists if necessary. For my part, I like to shed some light on the piece so that you all can understand what exactly it is about. Thank you! *LM*

Great interpretation of this famous Ravel piano trio. I am specially glad to see my fellow swede Torleif Thedéen on wonderful cello. Janine is always a genious on violin. And together with Denis Kozhukhin on piano they play the perhaps best version of this music I ever heard.
PS Listen to the second movement at 14:50, and first to the left hand piano, and then cello, after that comes Janines wonderful violin. And then it goes back to the piano, and the cello, and then all together. Ending with solo piano. As I regard it on one the most intimate and beautiful music movements ever written.

Sorry, the movement at 14:50 is the third movement, not the second. A passagalia.
