2006 BMW E60 520d - No crank, no start

One of my mates from Thornwick Bay (Baz) asked me to help a mate of his with a BMW E60 520d The story was that it had failed the MoT and had been parked up during which time the battery became discharged. It had been charged off the car and when it was refitted the car wouldn't work. At first I thought it would need a battery relearn due to being out of the car. With BMWs of this vintage they have to be told when a battery has been replaceed and what type of battery has been installed which was my reasoning. I wanted to scan the car but the first stumbling block was the that the ignition wouldn't even turn on. It became apaprent (once a multimeter had been obtained) that the battery was losing charge as it was below 12 volts. A jump start form a Ford Mondeo brought the voltage up enough to be able to turn on the ignition. There were 33 fault codes present and once they'd been cleared only 4 came back. Threr was one for the passenger heated mirror, one for the instument cluster and two for blown headlight bulbs so nothing major in terms of electrics. I tried to start the car and it wouldn't even crank. Another reading at the battery terminals showed that the battery was losing charge so I came to the conclusion that the battery was toast and I wasn't able to take things any further. The owner is going to take it to a local garage and they will fit a new battery.
