Hi Robert, Just watched your video re: IBS ... Gotta say Big thanks for that, I've had the RAC look at my e60 with the same problem as yours...He couldn't fix it ? An auto electrician wanted £70 just to look at it ? Telling me it could cost a small fortune to fix.. Just as I was about to give up I came on here, watched your video and BOOM💥 It worked 😄 You saved me a pot of dosh and a shit storm between my ears man, Thankyou ! Andy, Liverpool UK. 🖒🖒
You are right!!! Thank you sir!!! Amend!!! Disconnect should be fine. This is what I call over engineering causing all kind of issues. And BMW charging $450cad for the part. I have done so much research. People just disconnect the IBS. And running like normal. I was stranded so many times, so many inconvenience. Spend many hours troubleshooting this issues. Replace the 1 yr old battery with the new one cost $350cad and had to register the battery and clear the code for ELV and CAS using INPA. The issue came back, finally I had enough, just disconnect the blue wire, problem solve.
It's an ATG IBS used to monitor electrical & computer circuits. Don't get scammed by dealerships. I have removed the ATG and hit $32,500.00 to get the Lamborghini Huracan. Plus the battery prices. ATG say you can clear everything by using BlueDriver and save you money for not getting OEM battery.
I'm replacing the battery AND the IBS on a 2017 F15 X5 (the bad IBS caused the battery to be flattened out several times). Those IBS are also affecting newer BMW.
Another symptom of the IBS lead failure is various systems start to shut down. I've had it where the radio / idrive would not work on position 1 on the ignition. i.e the ignition is not on fully but just at the first (what we used to call) accessory setting. Put ignition on so the dash lights up (not starting the car, and the radio would b fine. The AC / heater blower would only work to it's 2nd speed and no faster. And it dips to its lowest speed if the car sees another power drain. if I hit the brakes, as soon as the brake lights illuminate, the blower dips to speed 1. And it was slightly slow to crank. Never failed to start, just slightly slower. Disconnected the IBS lead and hey presto. Radio and blower all back to normal and spins over perfectly when starting. Why oh why do they build pointless systems into cars that serve little purpose than to break down over time and give issues???? Great video by the way.
Thanks for the comment Trev! I get the purpose of the IBS, save battery, but I'm totally baffled as to why these great German engineers would let the IBS effect the car start system! Thankfully the did design it to were the system can be disabled.

Do the accessories power up when you press the start button a second time without your foot on the brake? If so it sure sounds like a starter to me. The starter on mine also went out definitely a big job
@@Nobobs62 The accessories do turn up as soon as you turn the ignition on. I tried knocking the starter a little and tried cranking again and it started making a click sound probably by the starter solenoid so this tells me that clearly the starter is bad and probably the brushes are worn out, so it needs to be replaced.
Thanks very nice video I'm having issues with my (2008) bmw 750li no start battery discharged The battery is (1) year old AGM very expensive too I paid at the dealer $557 I don't know what is the problem is it a automatic car wash that did. when i open the door and insert the key in to the ignition the flywheel start turning by itself without starting kind of a grinding noise some they say it's power control module and some say VVT. / BST BMW electronics no good. too many sensors for nothing. My (2004) BMW 750li Is running fine i don't want touch that one. I like the way you show the BST cable again nice video thanks
Hey sorry for late reply. I did replace it about a year ago I think. The voltage was fine but seemed a little weak. Testing said one cell was going bad. It was still under warranty so they exchanged it. Did the lack of IBS cause this? Could be. Could also have been just a flaw in the battery. My thought on it is just a flaw in the battery. I sold the car a few months ago. So I won't have any more data.
I have a bmw 528i 2008 , changed the battery because it wasn’t good anymore and now my car doesn’t want to start, the lights turn on an off and I have codes popping up like transmission , abs etc . it turned on properly yesterday but didn’t want to go into drive or reverse , now it doesn’t want to turn on , not sure what’s wrong
Can this be my problem for my 2011? Having similar issues when i use push start i get a single click and then nothing else i was thinking this or my relay?
I have a 328i 2007 and took it in as it had a recall for air bag and oil change since then it has had starting problems took it local and they thought it was starter they had me confused so I had it towed to BMW... they said it was not the starter it was the cable to the battery something got wet/ corrosion and the whole thing had to be replaced at the tune of 5,398.00 had it for a week when i got it back the engine light came on again and the bulb light and radiator fluid light came on took it in and replaced light they told me the device light is going on because break fluid had to be replaced said I would wait on that. Drove back home stopped at gas station and would not start after filling up with gas. had to have it towed again??? Please help!
Sorry for delay, had been a really busy week. I haven't worked on a 3 series but I'll try to help. Do the Accessories power up if you press the start stop button? When you 1st put the fob in the car or you are sitting in the car only thing that should be coming up as the little key symbol 2nd press should make several lights on the dash come on, does that happen or not?
I'm had the exact same warning control messages you did on my 2008 328xi. Literally the first time my clock reset when I started it after work one day almost as if the battery was disconnected and reconnected again then it gave the control message you had for battery discharge with a pic of a car on a lift. Im almost sure its my IBS sensor now I'll try this fix after work.
Hi let's see if this reaches out to someone I just replace the battery in my 2007 BMW 550i everything lights up it cranks but doesn't start. Before I replace the battery I was getting random none starts just clicks when it would crank it starts. Now again after replacing the battery it cranks but doesn't start!! Any ideas
Sounds like the draw is real. You need to isolate system to figure out the cause. When the car is not being used for a while stay overnight pull fuses to isolate a system may help.
How are you disconnecting the IBS? Something's not right if you don't have lights. The only thing that's be disconnected is that little two-wire blue connector nothing else
I hit a dear and my car started showing codes for this and now my car will not start and wouldn’t come out of gear this little thing cause so many problems
Hi guys 👋 I disconnected the IBS and then the battery after waiting 1hr the car started.was wondering if it will continue to work as a normal drain to the battery? Or will it kill the live of the battery?
Well that is the main goal of the IBS is to extend battery life. that part I can't tell you about for sure but my thought process is with the IBS out of the picture is reverts back to just a regular charge through an alternator which is always work fine in the past.
@@gregpalumbo2503 I did replace the battery about two or more years later. I did because one cell was going bad and it was under warranty. So to be honest I really don't think not having the IBS sensor in there did it but it is possible. I sold the BMW about a year ago.

I have a 535d m sport with alternater regulater problems unplugged these 2 wires and presto no problems no warning s car flying but I will put a new alternater on it to be sure
GEE POOK Sorry but if it's not in the same spot as mine the only thing I can tell you is look to see if you have an IBS and if you do just follow the cabling back it should be a two wire connector
Robert Edwards I did what you said and I found a connection coming off of my positive cable nothing off the negative ,I disconnected it and the car fired rt up . However don't know if this is the problem cause it tends to start sometimes and some times not but I will monitor it for now since I disconnected this cable and see if I still get any no starts .thank you for responding I appreciate it ...
GEE POOK. Now the IBS is connected to both positive and negative post the thing to look for is the battery terminals themselves the negative should be quite a bit bigger. You may have just found the connector that sends the positive signal to the processor on the negative post and that may just cause they censor to be inoperative. Mainly you don't want this to be a real drain on the battery
I have a bmw e90 3 series 325i and have replaced the alternator and the starter and battery went this morning to crank car and nothing put my obd scanner and got the code 2E8B for the battery sensor I’m going to unplug it and hope it works this E90 coupe has been a nightmare just tired of the dam thing hope it works great video thanks
I got up this morning unhooked the sensor and gave it Lil jump didn’t do nothing at first but tighten up the positive some more and negative and car turned on seen that my cable on other car was disconnected wow crazy lol 😂 but car is on hope it turns back on letting her warm up keep you posted
Hey man, thanks for the video! I had the same problem (with my BMW 2007 525i),but after plugging off the IBS, it's running pretty cool! I was wondering, will it be a problem in the future if I won't replace it (just drive like this for couple months)?
The IBS allows the charging system to make the battery last longer by efficient charging with this disconnected it goes back to an old school regulator system which is supposed to shorten the life of the battery I didn't find that on mine but it could. That's the only thing I know that changes when that IBS is disconnected
I'm not 100% sure but I don't think so. My thought would be it's one of the front wheel speed sensors. My 97 528i went into limp mode when the passenger side front sensor went out
mine won't satr anymore after I disconnect the battery and reconnect it, it start for a while then after I cleared and reset all the warning sign , it won't start anymore, I tried to disconnect IBS like what some video tutorial it did not help so far...stll trying to figure it out please help!!!!
If the windows and such have power my thought is the starter is the problem. If the IBS was bad the windows wouldn't work. I talk about that at the very beginning of the video
Thanks a lot I will let the battery get check, right now I disconnected the battery we'll see if everything will get reset and plug it in tomorrow and try to start again like what other video says...
I was told by the dealership that replacing the battery but having a battery drain (caused by faulty IBS) could flatten a battery enough times to have a battery only a few days or weeks old to be replaced. Basically a bad IBS is battery killer.
@@Ashley_van_Schooneveld The battery charging system with an IBS is supposed to make batteries last longer and they probably do but when the IBS is disconnected I believe the charging system reverts to the old way of the voltage regulator in the alternator doing all the work. That basic system mite shorten the life of a battery compared to the IBS system but its my belief that it’s not a drastic difference. After I disconnected the IBS sensor on my car that battery lasted for over a year and I can’t remember how old it was prior to that. In the end do what you think is best. My comments are just opinions
@@Nobobs62 the mechanic found that "transport mode" having switched itself on for unknown reasons and was causing the battery to go flat repeatedly. At first I thought it was the weather to blame since it's been hovering around -15°F here for a few weeks. Once "transport mode" was disabled using an OE scan tool, the battery keep its charge since. Problem solved!
No, did absolutely nothing. you know how normally you can press the start button a second time without your foot on a break and it Powers accessories? even that didn't work
This is an absolutely brilliant video. My car starts every time just be getting the warning battery dechanging and a picture of a car on a lift Icon. Well I have had my battery checked and everything is fine. I was thinking it may be the alternator as it had a slightly low charge. Until I discovered IBS and what it does from your video. I'm going to try to disconnect this and I hopefully all will be well. Just a bit worried about the iDrive. would any new icons warning information come up. I have a bmw 2009 e60 520.
Hey Peter, Glad the video helped! The icons associated with the IBS will not be there because it's not connected. The most important thing for you to do is to check your battery often, daily would be best, until you know for sure the problem is the IBS and NOT the battery.
Did you ever think about replacing the ibs cable? Have you had any problems having it disconnected and or do you know of any problems that can happen if you leave it like that? Great video by the way and thanks again!!
No I never thought a replacing the cable or the sensor. I get the concept that the IBS CAN prolong the life of the battery but the cost to repair it and the fact that it can keep your car from starting makes it not worth it to me. No problems at all leaving it connected.
Robert Edwards so my car finally gave out on me and won't start. I have a 2007 328i. I disconnected the blue plug but what else do I have to disconnect?
Thanks a lot was great Imagine how much it would have cost you at BMW dealership . another way they design car to make money after sale ,they could made it they way car would start but check engine on but this way no one would take it to dealership

Hello I know this is an old thread, but what is the ibs sensor, is it the blue connector that is disconnected??
i have a n54 and might have a bed plate leak ... do you know where i can find a alignment tool to put it back on
I'm replacing the battery AND the IBS on a 2017 F15 X5 (the bad IBS caused the battery to be flattened out several times). Those IBS are also affecting newer BMW.
Oh my God this guy is a genius thank you so much. I thought i had to buy a new battery or starter. Wow! You are amazing thank you so much buddy.
LOL.....genius. I'm very far from being a genius. I'm really glad the video helped and for your comment!!
Wow, it actually works for my 2007 535xi. Thank you sir!

what were your issues? Mine starts then stalls out after 5 mins of driving with no issues, no codes. hoping this could be my solution
Best video on the net. I love you saved me over 1k for getting a starter just to be upset
That’s awesome, thanks so much for the comment!!

You want to check ground (known metal on engine) to hot (+ red).
Then check starter the same way.

Most annoying is that you have such and "intelligent" sensor, but no error messages appear to hint you what is wrong with the battery.

I also noticed that there was another wire that was not plugged in anywhere that resembled the blue ibs cable but in black. I'm assuming it's ground?

Hey Robert I am sorry to disturb you but before my battery drained a engine temperature too high error occurred , does that count ?
My thought would be no. The engine temperature wouldn't have anything to do with the IBS sensor that I know.

@@Nobobs62 The accessories do turn up as soon as you turn the ignition on. Hey Robert this video was posted 3 years ago has your battery went bad Since? Just wondering? Great video btw
Sounds like the new battery is bad from stock. I'd have it checked out
I’m having this same problem i disconnected the blue cable and still have nothing I only have the key symbol on the dash can you help me ?
My best guess would be the DME/ECM is bad. Check power at the positive terminal under the hood. Sorry I can be more help.
Did you just remove this sensor from the negative thermal? And the car works? Again? I got a bmw f30
No did not remove it from the negative terminal just left a little blue connector off

Can this be my problem for my 2011? Having similar issues when i use push start i get a single click and then nothing else i was thinking this or my relay?
I wouldn't think so if you hear a click. That makes me think low battery or starter problem. Good luck!
This video is a great education and explanation of BMW's (IBS) Intelligent Battery Sensor.
Thanks so much for the comment!
Any ideas
If it's turning over, it has to be either ignition or fuel issue. Nothing to do with the IBS. The IBS fault wouldn't let it turn over
I unhooked ibs yes it runs but not as well. I replaced ibs and didn't fix battery draw problem. What next.
Sounds like the draw is real. You need to isolate system to figure out the cause. When the car is not being used for a while stay overnight pull fuses to isolate a system may help.
But what happens when you disconnect the ins and you have nothing not even lights come back on !!!
How are you disconnecting the IBS? Something's not right if you don't have lights. The only thing that's be disconnected is that little two-wire blue connector nothing else
I hit a dear and my car started showing codes for this and now my car will not start and wouldn’t come out of gear this little thing cause so many problems
God bless you my brother
Thank you. You saved my day! Was able to start it up without paying loads of money. Thanks man

I am going to try this thank you.is there any possibility that this could cause a trans malfunction light to come on occasionally that you know
Hi guys 👋 I disconnected the IBS and then the battery after waiting 1hr the car started.was wondering if it will continue to work as a normal drain to the battery? Or will it kill the live of the battery?
Well that is the main goal of the IBS is to extend battery life. that part I can't tell you about for sure but my thought process is with the IBS out of the picture is reverts back to just a regular charge through an alternator which is always work fine in the past.
Robert...You are my hero !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Thank you...and you did save me money!

Could this cause the car to go into limp mode?
I'm not 100% sure but I don't think so. My thought would be it's one of the front wheel speed sensors. My 97 528i went into limp mode when the passenger side front sensor went out

norhelebermj b. Does the second push of the start switch power the accessories like Windows and seats?
I did not try that yet, but pretty sure they are operational
If the windows and such have power my thought is the starter is the problem. If the IBS was bad the windows wouldn't work. I talk about that at the very beginning of the video

This is an absolutely brilliant video. My car starts every time just be getting the warning battery dechanging and a picture of a car on a lift Icon. Hey Peter,
Glad the video helped!
