Excellent video. Well researched. I was at Apple when we released the iTunes Music Store and it did offer a safe, easy way to enjoy music and still see that the artists received (at least some) compensation. I was not sorry to see Napster and LimeWire disappear. I'd spend 30 minutes downloading an mp3, just to discover it was mislabelled, or a plant by the RIAA.

    Two things you missed:
    1. You used to be able to point iTunes at your Limewire music files, if you downloaded quality files carefully you could use the artwork and artist catalogue function in iTunes without purchasing via iTunes
    2. The legal process included messaging to Limewire Pro users threatening legal action if they persisted. Many folks did the calculation - would the music industry sue individual Limewire users? Limewire access to credit card details was the problem, as mentioned

#1 - CDs and Radios weren't the only way. Cassette Tapes were still a thing and Records were as well. Artists and Groups were still releasing through multiple formats because most normal people still had older methods for playing music.
#2 - There was a such thing as Cassingles (Cassette Singles), 12" Singles and CDs that either had Samplers or just Singles on it. So yes, you could just buy the one song that happened to be a hit record at the time.
#3 - Radio was a ton more tolerable in the early 2000s compared to the 2010s.
#4 - Most people in the early 2000's who weren't tech savvy but knew how to download songs didn't care about metadata. That didn't become relevant until Zune and/or iTunes was a household name.

Hmm... I never thought of Circuit City as a "music store" destination (like Tower Records, Turtle's, Record Bar) but as an electronics/appliance retailer that at some point added a bit of music department floorspace to their stores. Did kids flock to Circuit City to buy CDs in the pre-download era? I was way beyond kid-aged by that time, so maybe I was just out of touch. I was buying CDs in dedicated "record stores" and some funky locally-owned shops.

In many ways, iTunes effectively had no DRM since users could simply rip music off a CD or copy the CD itself. Apple appeared to let the music industry believe that DRM could control content distribution, but in reality, as Apple likely understood, true control wasn’t achievable. There are always workarounds-if you can see or hear something, you can copy it. Even today, with video content, a specially designed camera and audio recording system aimed at the output can bypass any copyright DRM, making reproduction possible.

Once I downloaded what I thought were music videos, titled correctly, to what I searched, it turned into videos of hanky panky, humpty dumpy, bread going into the toaster and back out again, I think you got the idea... I switched to Kazaa. Soon after, same problem so I gave up entirely. I still lived with mom and with humility, I didn't want her to know about it. That, and my ever continuing understanding of economics, I pretty much figured what was free for me, cost the artists money and Karma was gonna kick my keaster!

I kind of find it interesting that you spent so much time talking about the Audio Sharing Portion of LimeWire and other file sharing services that you never really mentioned the Video and Image Sharing portions of LimeWire and other Fikle sharing services. Because I've Downloaded as much Image and Video Files as I did with the Audio Files. And through it I've discovered many Amusing Video Files such as the Gladiatrix Version of the Pepsi Commercial from back in the day staring all of the Top Female Musical Artists of the time. And just like the Partnership with Gladiator 2 they also played 'We Well Rock You' Song. And As side from that I've downloaded quite few Good MadTv Clips yeah I admit some are Rascally Offensive but the ones that aren't are some what amusing to me personally. And hare's something to fit the Halloween Theme and Month I've even downloaded this one file where you are made to think it's just a car driving along a highway but all of sudden this Scary Clown Jumps out at you to Scare the Candy Corn Out Of You. And I think it's the only time Before or Since that I've been Truly Been Scared.
Anyways it sounds like I got out just in the nick of time as the last time that I used it it Feels like it Took 47 Years to download just one file, and I got so inpatient that I just quit and deleted the Program from my computer and I've always wanted to know why it took so long to download just one file, but now I do. And also I'm wondering if the same thing with the Image Sharing and the Video Sharing Files as the Audio Files? Becaouse tome they could've just taken the Audio Portion Out and just keep the Image and Video Portions in? but I guess they where so deep In To It that they just had to Take everything away?

I remember LimeWire. As well as KaZaA. You could use it to download anything; Music, movies and more. I remember it often infecting Windows systems with malware, spyware and viruses and some of the songs weren't what they appeared to be. Not to mention missing artwork and metadata. Steve Jobs then changed the music industry forever for the better with the iPod and iTunes.

My interest in what would become World music kept me from signing on with Napster or Limewire. After all, these companies had never heard of Gabby Pahinui, The Sunday Manoa, Kapena, Olomana, or even Israel Kamakawiwo'ole. When Spotify came on the scene, I still found only Rock/Rap/R&B. Eventually, Spotify included World music in their lineup, but by then I had moved on to iTunes and the "personal MP3 player." These days, I continue to play my old 192KB/sec. encoded MP3s on Ye Olde laptop HDD. As for iTunes, after the MacBook Pros began to crash, I returned to the likes of Lenovo ThinkPads, valuing an easy to upgrade/repair "giant laptop" that plays DVDs and CDs, in spite of Microsoft's ditching digital music/video players with Windows 10. Yep, VLC Media Player allows me to give the "President Skroob Salute" to Bill Gates, though I do use Windows Media Player as a jukebox.;)

I 100% disagree with the notion that going to the music store was a hassle. In those days most people were used to going out to get what they wanted. It's only in the last 15 to 20 years that that has changed. I bought a lot of CDs I was not hassled by going to Sam Goode. I had no problem with it. Also back then that's how you sold an album by the single. Yes there were singles that you could buy on CD or tape, but back then people just bought the album for either the single or because they wanted the album. Don't get it confused these are two different times, there was no hassle and people didn't look at it as a hassle nor did they not care about having the entire album. Because we did. Yes I bought the color in the shape by Foo fighters because of Everlong, but I also wanted the album too. Because it was Foo fighters..

17:22 not only this but you could only make 1 copy of it so what I did was make an MP3 copy, then I would never use that original purchased song. Once you would make that copy, it would remove the drm from it and that file was free to do whatever you liked with it. Those labeled “Purchased AAC” files would have a little lock on the file to let you know that there was drm on that file. I had soooo many MP3 copies of purchased AAC files purchased from iTunes because of drm!! Lol

One thing not mentioned are the bots the RIAA created that roamed the peer-to-peer streams and corrupted active downloads/uplaods. End result was a song that maybe played for a few seconds (or a little a minute or two) but then suddenly became inaudible, screechy messes.

I remember limewire causing everything from having regular songs ending up being porn to having my laptop (which I no longer have because it was years if not decades ago now) being hijacked and months of game files stolen. Imagine you download what you think is the Pokemon gotta catch em all song with your mom sitting there as a young child just to blast audio porn. Oh the horror 😮😅😂. TBH I’m glad to see it go. That and TPB. Though I’d be surprised if TPB didn’t resurface….again
